Introduction:

To PDGA Canada Coordinators, Tournament Directors, and Members:

Greetings Folks, and welcome to a brand new season of disc golf across the great white north.

PDGA Canada was set up in 2007 as a small branch office of PDGA headquarters in USA, with the purpose of supporting and promoting disc golf and PDGA activities in Canada. Currently the PDGA International Director works as Canada Manager an average of about 4-6 hours a week. His roles include Treasurer of PDGA Canada funds, reviewing event reports prior to PDGA database entry, working with the elected PDGA Provincial Coordinators and Provincial Disc Sports bodies, and responding to requests and inquiries from Canadian TDs, members, new course developers, etc.

As you probably already know 2016 was a year filled with milestones for disc golf and the PDGA. On top of having record growth once again in both PDGA membership and events, the sport saw new levels of media exposure, on-line promo and learn to play videos, new well-organized professional tours, new distance world records, and much more. All told PDGA current membership grew by an impressive 17% to more than 35,000 members in 46 different countries, while the 3,105 PDGA Tour events worldwide represented an increase of almost 20%. Here is a great synopsis of 2016, the year that was: http://www.pdga.com/bar-set-record-height-2016-aimed-higher-2017 .

Canada was a significant contributor to all these positive trends which show no signs of slowing down. To this end, this annual report aims to inform you about PDGA Canada and its activities. Hopefully it will also inspire you to renew your PDGA membership and sanction your events in 2017!

Part One: 2017 – the Year Ahead

Memberships & Events - PDGA Canada Protocol Please see the attached 2 page document on 2017 PDGA Canada Protocol for all the how to’s regarding renewing and new memberships, the official’s exam, event sanctioning at http://www.pdga.com/pdga-event-sanctioning-agreement , and submitting event reports and player fees to the Canada Manager. Here you will also find a list of PDGA Canada Provincial Coordinators and contacts.

All TDs of B & C tier events are reminded that they must have their event date(s) approved by their Provincial Coordinator prior to submitting their sanctioning agreement.

A number of resources for Canada event TDs and members are also available at the PDGA Canada webpage, including this report, the Canada TD report form as well as links to Provincial Disc Golf websites. You can find these resources at: http://www.pdga.com/canada

2017 Canadian National Championships PDGA Canada is pleased to announce that the Provincial Coordinators recently approved Toronto at the site of the 2017 Canadian Nationals. This fabulous event was previously held on the west coast, hosted by 2 of Canada’s and BCs strongest clubs – Van City United (2015) and Kamloops (2013, 2011). It is now expected that the Canadian Nationals will be an annual showcase event, that attracts players from across the country, and that rotates between different provinces.

The 2017 Canadian Nationals will be held Labour Day long weekend, September 2-4, on the Toronto Island and Etobicoke Centennial courses, in conjunction with the long standing and renowned Toronto Island Maple Leaf event. The tournament will have a capacity of 150 players, in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary. All info will be available at www.timl.ca and player registration will begin on May 1.

If your club is interested in hosting Nationals in 2018 please note that the deadline for bids is September 30, 2017. You will find the bid guidelines document here: http://www.pdga.com/pdga-documents/canada/bid-guidelines-canadian-national-disc-golf-championships

Martin Hendel, Ontario’s top player Credit: St. Thomas Times-Journal 2017 PDGA World Championships This year the PDGA will be holding 3 World Championships, with the Pros divided into 2 events, 1 for Open Men and Open Women’s divisions only, and the other for Pro Masters and older players. The Pro Open Worlds will be held June 20-24 in Augusta, Georgia; the Amateur & Junior Worlds will be held July 15-22 in Quad Cities, Iowa/Illinois, and the Pro Masters Worlds will be held August 12-19 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Pro Open Worlds registration is based on Player Ratings while Amateur and Pro Master Worlds registration includes a specific window of time when only Canadian players may register. You can find the Invitation Criteria and Registration Schedules for all these events here (the official lists of invited players will also be posted here soon): http://www.pdga.com/world-championships

2017 WFDF Team World Championships The 2nd edition of this unique competition is being organized by WFDF and will be held August 23-26 at Essex University in Colchester, England. All the event details can be found at www.2017wtdgc.uk . PDGA has agreed to sanction the event at the XA tier level. PDGA Canada will once again be organizing the selection of our national team, beginning with an email to Canada’s top rated players requesting that they confirm their interest in participating in the event.

2017 USDGC Qualification The big news is that for the first time ever there will be 2 Canada event qualifiers for the 2017 USDGC. 5 places will be awarded at the BC Open (July 8-9) and at the TIML/Canadian Nationals (September 2-4). This event is the hardest in the world to qualify for and we hope that Canada’s top shooters will take advantage of this unique opportunity to qualify for and take part. The 2017 USDGC will take place October 4-7 on the fabled Winthrop Gold Course in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Here is where you will find all the information on how to secure your place: http://usdgc.com/?page_id=229 .

2017 PDGA Canada Sponsorships The decision to invest Canadian event player and non-member fees back into Canada is the PDGA’s commitment to provide direct return to its Canadian members and the game in Canada. As of the end of 2016, PDGA Canada had a cash position of just over $10,000. In 2017 we expect to collect between $20,000 in event player fees. This means PDGA Canada will have up to $25,000 total available in 2017 for sponsoring new courses, upgrading course equipment, single baskets for schools and disc golf promoters, sponsorship of Canadian Nationals, provincial championship, series final, and women’s events, media related initiatives, and other good ideas that will help to promote the sport and the PDGA brand in Canada. PDGA Canada will also sponsor the entry fee and jerseys for Team Canada at the 2017 World Team Championships, if it is determined that we will be sending a team to England. Other PDGA Canada costs include the Manager’s consulting fee and travel costs, the HST paid to Revenue Canada on event fees received, and basic office operating costs. See the attached 2016 Financial Report for more information.

All of you are encouraged to email me requests for support – a couple of well written paragraphs outlining your proposal, its positive impact and the amount of funds requested will suffice. In return all you are expected to do is provide proof that the funds have been spent and to promote PDGA Canada and its contribution to your club, course, event or school.

Please note the preference is to invest in new courses, course upgrades, schools programs and other primarily developmental initiatives, rather than tournament sponsorship. However a significant portion of PDGA Canada sponsorship will continue to go back into events based on demand and requests received, in the interest of spending the funds, while maintaining a modest balance in hand as security.

Comments: Participation in PDGA Canada events grew by an unprecedented 35% from 3201 to 4311 players. The total PDGA Canada events pro purse also increased significantly from $78,975 to $95,430.

The inaugural PDGA/WFDF World Team Championships, hosted by Van City United, was the first PDGA Major event to be held in Canada since the 1987 Worlds. 6 countries competed in singles match play, best shot and alternate doubles, and Total Team Score - Australia, Brasil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, and USA. While Team Canada dominated the qualification rounds and was seeded first entering medal play, they failed to seize the day when it mattered most, losing the semi-final to New Zealand in a playoff and the Bronze medal match to Japan. Team USA defeated New Zealand to take home the Gold.

The Toronto Island Maple Leaf, hosted by Dave Slater was once again Ontario’s preeminent event, paying out the largest purse country-wide, while the BC Provincials attracted the most competitors. Held in December, the Union set new standards for a charity focused tournament. Nearly every province or region now hosts its own championship event.

Financials & Sponsorship: Reflecting the growth of events across the country, and the player fees collected at those events, PDGA Canada was able to distribute $15,730 in sponsorship across the country in 2016. All told financial support was provided to 7 new courses & course upgrades, Team Canada’s entry fee & jerseys, 13 events including 5 Provincial Championships, 2 charitable event donations, and the Maritimes series. This is how the PDGA reinvests the fees paid by you, the players, in Canadian disc golf. Please see the attached annual Financial Report for more detail.

Event Reports & Player Fees

Canada TDs are to use the latest copy of the PDGA Canada TD Report form which can be found here: http://www.pdga.com/pdga-documents/canada/canada-event-td-report .

Completed event reports must be emailed to the PDGA Canada Manager at [email protected] , ASAP following an event, regardless of whether a TD has loaded an event’s unofficial results using Tournament Manager at the PDGA website or not . These event reports are then reviewed for completeness and correctness of information prior to official entry into the PDGA database.

Official results are generated when the PDGA office processes batches of event reports into the database. This is done about 20 times per year. Official player ratings are updated about 12 times a year by the Ratings Committee.

Canada TDs also send their PDGA player fees to the PDGA Canada Manager in CAD as soon as possible following their events (they DO NOT send these fees to the PDGA Office). Payment methods are.

By paypal sent to [email protected]

By Interac e-Transfer sent to [email protected]

Cheque in the mail, made payable to “PDGA”, sent to 5 Dacotah Ave, Toronto ON M5J 2E4

Player fees are: Per Player - A Tier $4, B Tier $3, C Tier $2, PLUS $10 collected from each non-PDGA member or non-current member. Junior division players are exempt from the $10 fee. These player fees should be built into and collected as part of the event registration system.

Tour Standards

All PDGA Canada events follow the 2017 PDGA Tour Standards as found here: http://www.pdga.com/pdga-documents/tour-documents/pdga-tour-standards . The only exceptions are CAD values are used in place of USD values, and PDGA Canada event reports and player fees are sent to the PDGA Canada Manager.
