From the Executive Director2016 was quite a year for the Anglican Foundation of Canada. From ground-breaking projects to inspiring stories, 2016 was indeed memorable.
By imagining more, Canadian Anglicans made it possible to fund over $300,000 in building and project grants, $100,000 in student bursaries, and $40,000 for the Request-for-Proposals addressing the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action.
The Anglican Foundation remains committed to addressing changing times with strong and steady support for people of faith, progressive vision, and an innovative spirit. To celebrate 2016, the AFC team has compiled this report looking back at some of the projects and moments that made this year quite remarkable. We extend profound thanks to many generous and dedicated Canadian Anglicans whose donations have helped hundreds of individuals and parishes achieve a dream.

Grants
Building for the futureThroughout the Anglican Foundation’s history, the majority of its grants have been dedicated to enhancing church infrastructure from coast to coast to coast. In response to leaky roofs, shrunken shingles, cracks in foundations, obsolete lighting, inaccessible entrances, outdated electrical fixtures, and lack of running water, AFC has always made bricks and mortar investments a priority. AFC understands that a grant, made at the right time—or just in time—can give a congregation the incentive it needs to move forward with worthwhile ministry, breathing new life into a development campaign through the knowledge that the Canadian church is supporting the local effort. And we see the results: church buildings are becoming more and more a hub of community life, holding people together as a meeting place, as they open their (accessible!) doors to the public.
In 2016, alongside applications for infrastructure projects, AFC received a number of applications for innovative ministry projects across the country. The grants listed provide just a glimpse of the amazingly creative ways that Canadian Anglicans engage in ministry to meet the needs of their local context.

The village of Haines Junction lies on the edge of a vast wilderness, in the territory of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, Southern Tutchone people, who have been there for thousands of years. St. Christopher’s engaged in new construction to fully outfit a kitchen in order to provide a food share project within the community.

International Justice Camp Bien Común: Promesa del Reino de Dios/Common Good: Promise of the Reign of God • Diocese of Niagara
Justice Camp 2016 brought together Cuban and Canadian Anglicans to explore the concept of the common good to further God’s justice and loving purposes. This was the first ever international Justice Camp with the Episcopal Church of Cuba. “Words can’t begin to express all that I learned and experienced in Cuba”—The Rev. Bill Mous, Diocese of Niagara.
Trusts
Generous LegaciesSince the early days of the Foundation, many Canadian Anglicans have left a gift in their will to AFC, making a significant contribution to the future sustainability of ministries that are meaningful to them. By making a legacy gift, these individuals have supported theological education, Canadian church music, Indigenous ministry and education, student exchange scholarships, liturgical arts and dance, and programs for seniors, youth, and the differently abled.
These gifts have benefited thousands of Canadians from coast to coast to coast—and have provided a tangible means for the donor’s memory to live on into future generations. Some Canadian Anglicans have also made a significant planned gift during their lifetime, as part of their estate planning, so that they see the impact of their investment decisions.

At St. Patrick’s, senior newcomers to Canada attend language and computer skills classes in order to integrate and fully participate in Canadian society. North of Lake Winnipeg is Norway House, a population centre with a neighbouring First Nation reserve of the Norway House Cree Nation. Established in 1906, St. Mark’s Anglican Church is a vibrant community serving up to 2,000 people. An AFC grant assisted with costs associated with an expansion of the parish hall, a roof replacement, and the installation of commercial grade flooring for the purpose of accommodating more people, events, and activities.

Bursaries
LeadershipIf we ever needed resilient and reasoned leaders, the time is now. Leaders of today can no longer live in a time zone of yesteryear with nostalgic thoughts of what used to be. They need to be nimble and adaptable as they face the tectonic shifts in technology, communication, and access to information. They need to uphold diversity and inclusion, with a spirit of hope.
Donors to AFC are making it possible to train such leaders for the Anglican Church of Canada. With $100,750 in theological bursaries disbursed in 2016, donors assisted over 50 students all across the country. These students are enrolled in programs that will lead to ordination, chaplaincies, outreach, teaching, writing, and research.
AFC receives many thank-you notes from students, telling us how grateful they are to receive bursaries from the Anglican Foundation, easing the burden of family and educational budgets.

Request-for-Proposals Grants
Parish of St. GeorgeFort Langley, BC • Diocese of New Westminster
The proposal from St. George’s includes a 35 km walk in the spirit of reconciliation from the Fort Langley Historic Site to the site of the nearest residential school, St. Mary’s mission. The opening and closing ceremonies of this ecumenical effort will showcase local Indigenous arts and crafts, Indigenous drumming and
singing, and prayers for healing and reconciliation. The walk will take place in June 2017.
Inner City Pastoral MinistryEdmonton, AB • Diocese of Edmonton
This ecumenical project called “We Are All In This Together—Moving Forward on the TRC” facilitates communication of the legacy of residential schools and supports congregations in the development of reconciliation activities. Inner City Pastoral Ministry and its partner Anglican and United Churches share resources
to build relationships within congregations and across generations and cultures.

With its partner church St. Paul’s, Edmonton, the diocese is collaborating on “Maskihkîy âcimowin / Medicine Stories”—an art installation featuring a large tree, inspired by the traditional Métis story of the Giving Tree. Stories are used to highlight the Indigenous
experience and to promote intercultural understanding, including traditional medicines and methods of healing.

Located on the south shore of Great Slave Lake is the small town of Hay River. For 60 years, volunteers have dedicated themselves to the operation of a Thrift Shop, recently named Georgina’s Place, which provides this northern community access to affordable clothing and household items and income for St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. With a grant from AFC and additional revenue from the shop, running water, laundry facilities, and a restroom were installed.

Pense is a town with a population of over 500 residents that celebrated its 100th year as a village in 2004. Centrally located in the Regina–Moose Jaw Corridor is All Saints Anglican Church. The parish community engaged in an ambitious project to install a wheel chair ramp, replace eaves troughs and fascia, upgrade electrical services, and paint the kitchen and entranceway. In this small town, All Saints is a thriving, welcoming parish for the entire community.
