A Special Appeal from the Office of the Chancellor A Humanitarian Collection for the Crisis in the Middle East

The United States Catholic Bishops proposed a special collection ‘to provide humanitarian relief and pastoral support for our affected broth-ers and sisters in the Middle East.’ Here at St. Mary Magdalene, we will take up this collection this weekend, September 20th & 21st at all of our Masses.

In proposing the collection, Archbishop Kurtz, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, wrote ‘Our Christian brothers and sisters and other innocent victims of the violence in the Middle East urgently need the assistance of the Catholic community of the United States. Thank you for your support of this special collection and for your continued prayers for the victims of this crisis.’

Standing Idle Today’s Gospel probably leaves those of us with a strong business sense scratching our heads in confusion. What would possess any boss to pay the same wages to a per-son who worked only a few minutes as someone who worked a full day? This parable calls us to dig deeper into the reality to which the story points. Consider the actions of the landowner. He goes out in search of labor-ers a total of five times during the day: at dawn, at nine, at twelve, at three, and at five. In this parable, Jesus summons us to consider the landowner’s actions as the kind of actions our God performs. In our lives we each have moments of standing idle, like the people in today’s parable. God is always on the prowl for us, inviting us into the vineyard. God’s persistence is immeasurable. Whether we respond at the dawn of life or at the “five o’clock” of our lives, God’s love and mercy are still show-ered upon us.

Are You Saved? When I was in high school my best friend became “born again.” He carried a small blue card in his wallet. On that card was written the exact date that he was “saved.” Knowing that I had been raised in the Roman Catholic Church, he asked me, “What day were you saved?” I told him that I was saved the day I was baptized and that I honestly expected to keep getting saved, I hoped, many more times for the rest of my life. A spiritual mentor once told me to expect to be born again, and again, and again, and again. Today’s Gospel reminds us that even when we stray, when we become complacent about God’s tre-mendous action in our lives, God still calls us back into a loving relationship. Perhaps it is at those times when we stand idle that God hounds us all the more, summoning us into the vineyard of new life, new possibilities, and renewed hope. Around

the Parish... John Gottman, a leading research scientist on marriage and family, says he can listen to a couple for 5 minutes and determine, with 91% accuracy, whether their mar-riage will survive. At the core of his research is what he calls “The Four Horsemen”. These are the four things that indicate a marriage may be in trouble:

1) Criticism. Complaints are fine. Criticism is more glob-al. It attacks the person, not the behavior. They didn’t take out the garbage because they forgot, but be-cause they’re a bad person.

2) Contempt. Name-calling, eye-rolling, sneering, mock-ery, and hostile humor. In whatever form, contempt—the worst of the four housemen—is poisonous to a relationship because it conveys disgust. It’s virtually impossible to resolve a problem when your partner is getting the message that you’re disgusted with him or her.

3) Defensiveness. Defensiveness is really a way of blaming your partner. You’re saying, in effect, ‘The problem isn’t me, it’s you.’ Defensiveness just esca-lates the conflict, which is why it’s so deadly.

4) Stonewalling. Turning out. Disengaging. This doesn’t just remove the person from the conflict, it ends up removing them, emotionally, from the relationship.

Gottman believes that major differences of opinion don’t destroy marriages, it’s how a couple deals with them. 69% of a couple’s problems are perpetual. These prob-lems don’t go away yet many couples keep arguing about them year after year. Gottman believes that most marital arguments cannot be resolved. Couples spend year after year trying to change each other’s mind, but it can’t be done. This is because most of their disagreements are rooted in fundamental differences of lifestyle, personality, or values. By fighting over these differences, all they suc-ceed in doing is wasting their time and harming their mar-riage. How do good marriages deal with issues that can’t be resolved? They accept one another as he/she is.

Healthy couples understand that problems are inevitably part of a relationship, much the way chronic physical ail-ments are inevitable as we get older. We may not love these problems, but we are able to cope with them, to avoid situations that worsen them, and to develop strate-gies and routines that help us deal with them.

So what makes a marriage flourish? Three of Gottman’s elements are:

1) Really knowing each other. Emotionally intelligent couples are intimately familiar with each other’s world. They remember the major events in each oth-er’s history, and they keep updating their information as the facts and feelings of their spouse’s world change.

(Pastoral Counseling Continued)

2) When fighting, do your best to avoid using the word you and try to use the word I. This makes it much eas-ier to express feelings and much harder to attack the other person.

3) Reunite at the end of the day and talk about how it went. The goal is to de-stress from the day so it can’t negatively affect your relationship.

Gottman also notes that an unhappy marriage can in-crease your chances of getting sick by roughly 35% and even shorten your life by an average of four years. Cou-ples who put a positive spin on their marriage’s history are likely to have a happy future as well. When happy memories are distorted it’s a sign that the marriage needs help.

Gottman’s list of the “Seven Principles for Making Mar-riage Work” is located in a handout in the vestibule of the church. Help yourself to a copy or call Rita at (619) 276-6805.

Today is Catechetical Sunday. This is a weekend to celebrate and consecrate the service of those who are called and gifted to teach our children.

The task of catechesis is not merely to teach about God (and certainly not to “bring” God, or “make God present”). The task of catechesis is to help children realize the pres-ence of God in their lives.

We do not seek an encounter with a doctrine or a moral code. The encounter is with Christ.

We come to understand God’s presence (catechesis) to celebrate it (liturgy) and then live it accordingly.” –from “Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us.” A statement of the U.S. Catholic Bishops.

Two wonderful examples of stewards who used the tal-ents, gifts and charisms for the sake of others in catech-esis were:

Saint John Baptist de la Salle (1651-1719) was already ordained when he met a layman who had a vision for poor boys. John became involved with the school and finally gathered a nucleus of teachers about him to whom he taught a new way of teaching. This group became the Christian Brothers. In order to focus entirely on the teach-ing vocation, John laid down the rule that no brother could become a priest. John’s system of education-teaching many children simultaneously and in the vernac-ular-revolutionized elementary education.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (1774-1821) was an American, a wife, a mother, a convert to Catholicism, founded a reli-gious order, and was responsible for the advancement of Catholic education in this country. Most of her life could be considered as ordinary as many of ours, but as we use our gifts for the sake of others, so too did she. This is how she advised her sisters in their work in catechesis, “The first end I propose in our daily work is to do the will of God; secondly, to do it in a manner he wills; and third-ly, to do it because it is his will.”
