Dear parishioners and friends,

We had a great Catholic Schools Week this past week. “This little light of mine” was the dismissal hymn that we sang at the 9AM Mass that highlighted Catholic Schools Week. St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School (SMMCS) was opened 14 years ago to promote faith, morals and the education of young minds so that they can transform our world. Catholic schools have a long tradition in our coun-try and contribute so much to the life of the local church. We had many parishioners visit the school during the open house last Sunday. Let us continue to pray for our school and also tell your family and friends about the great opportunity for Catholic education at SMMCS. Additionally, I invite parishion-

ers to show their support for our school. There is a fun and easy event to support our school coming up on Saturday, February 20th. This is the annual Steps for Students 5K Run/Walk to provide much-needed funds for programs and scholarships in Catholic education. I invite you to join my team for Steps for Students. If you join/support my team, 100 percent of your donation benefits SMMCS! You can pledge your support online at www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/FrFelix/2016. This will take a few minutes of your time, and know that I appreciate that. Or if you prefer, you could give me a check or cash in person after Mass or in the parish office, and I will make sure it gets credited to support our team.

Today is the kick-off for the 2016 Diocesan Services Fund (DSF). This is the annual collection to fund more than 60 ministries and services in the name of the archdiocese. Last week, we published Cardinal DiNardo’s letter for the 2016 DSF. I hope our registered parishioners received a letter including personalized pledge card from the Cardinal this past week. We have pledge cards available in the pews this weekend for everyone. Please complete the card and put them in the offertory baskets or return it in the mail in the special envelope provided. You could also go online and do this at www.archgh.org/dsf. Remember to fill out “St. Mary Magdalene” as your parish. Our parish DSF goal for 2016 is $165,000. Your contribution/pledge to DSF supports many ministries throughout the archdiocese. Some of the minis-tries include: Religious Education through catechist training programs; the Office of Aging, which reaches out to the elderly; the Office of Vocations, which oversees the formation of young men preparing for the priesthood; the Catholic Chaplain Corps, which provides ministry in the hospitals of Texas Medical Center; the Correctional Ministries, which provide religious support for those incarcerated in the hope of their conversion; as well as many other wonderful min-istries. Thank you for your support of the DSF.

A catchphrase from our gospel reading today is, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch” (Luke 5:4). These words of Jesus to Simon Peter and other fishermen in today’s gospel are words with a deep message for us who follow him today. The professional fishermen labored all night without a catch of fish, only to be told in the morning by a carpenter to try again!! When Peter tried again, following the command of Jesus, he and his men caught so many fish that they had to ask for help to haul them ashore. Peter recognized Jesus as Lord and also realized his own sinfulness; thus, he exclaimed, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Rather than withdraw from him, Jesus Christ invit-ed Peter to follow him. Peter later becomes the leader of the apostles, the rock on which Christ built his Church.

Have you ever felt like St. Peter in today’s gospel? You, the expert, have done all that you are supposed to do in a par-ticular situation but nothing seemed to work out right. Maybe you have tried all you could to turn things around for better in your family, or you have struggled to get away from a particular vice without success. Whatever the situation may be, Jesus says to you today: “Put out into deep water.” We may say, like Peter, “I have tried that before. I know what I am doing and what I should be doing. I have done every right thing at the right time without success.” But, like Peter, let us also give it another try. Let us respond to Jesus: “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets” (Luke 5: 5). Peter trusted in the words of the Master, even though the evidence before him did not give credence to the trust. This is a lesson of faith. In order to be authentic Christians, we have to trust God and take the risk of moving into the unknown with the belief that God knows what he is doing.

Ash Wednesday is Wednesday, February 10th; that is this Wednesday! Lent is quite early this year. Are you ready? Please check the bulletin for the schedule.

Weekly Message

Jubilee Year of Mercy

During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis calls us to share with everyone the tender compassion of God that we ourselves have experienced. In today’s Gospel, Luke uses a special Greek word conveying just such tenderness. In the other Gospels, Jesus calls the disciples to be “fishers,” haleis, the same word that means catching fish with hooks or nets, to be killed and eaten. But Luke uses zogron, from zoe or “life,” meaning “catch or gather people alive,” as animal lov-ers capture without harming, rescue from “the wild” for a better life, and protect in aquarium or zoo, tenderly cared for by professionals committed to the creatures’ well-being. So in Luke’s vision—and Pope Francis’s as well—we who

have been “caught alive” by God’s mercy ourselves are to become “missionaries of mercy” during this Jubilee Year of Mercy, rescuing fellow sinners from danger and gathering them into Jesus’s community to enjoy fullness of life.

Community Food Fair—Saturday, March 5th, 2016

Hunger is not only an affliction of the poor, but also the victims of natural disasters, those unable to work, the

oppressed, and the displaced. To feed the hungry is the first corporal work of mercy. It was given by Jesus when

he spoke to his disciples about the Judgment of the Nations (Mt 25:31-46), and it stands at the top of his list. On March 5th, 2016, St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church has partnered with the Houston

Food Bank to host a Community Food Fair. We will distribute food to needy families within our community starting after 10:00 A.M. and

lasting until 1:00 P.M. in the north parking lot. Parishioners interested in volunteering their time should e-mail Wanda Conley at

[email protected].

Natural Family Planning Class

MARRIED COUPLES. ENGAGED COUPLES. Learn a method of family planning which is safe, effective,

and consistent with good moral practice according to Church teachings. Live in harmony with God’s plan and realize the beauty, wonder, love, and excitement of God’s way of living marriage. Natural Family Planning (NFP) is also

low-cost, healthy, and good for communication in marriage. It can sometimes help couples who have low fertility to get preg-nant. A 3-class series begins Wednesday, February 24th at 7 pm in St Mary’s Hall. Each class lasts about two hours. To register or

inquire, contact NFP teachers Wes & Katie Barta at (281) 780-1047 or [email protected].

Weekly Announcements

P. 6

Thursday, February 11, 2016 is the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes and designated by the Vatican as "World Day of the Sick." We will celebrate the Anointing Mass on this day at 8:30 A.M. All are invit-ed to come to Mass and pray for all the sick as well as for those who take care of them. The Sacrament of the Sick is especially reserved for those whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age. Following are some guidelines for the ap-propriate reception of the Sacrament of the Sick: • Those whose health is seriously impaired by sick-

ness or old age • Before surgery, if the surgery is caused by serious

illness • Elderly people who have become notably

weakened, even though no serious illness is pre-sent

• Seriously ill children who have sufficient use of reason to be strengthened by the Sacrament

• Those who have been anointed if they relapse after recovery or if the condition becomes more serious

To receive the Sacraments of the Church licitly, a Catholic is to be in a state of grace. Individual con-fession and absolution constitute the ordinary means by which a member of the faithful conscious of grave sin is reconciled with God and the Church (Canon 9b0), and one is obliged to confess faithfully his or her grave sins at least once a year (Canon 989). The Church also encourages us to receive the Sacrament of Penance frequently. You are encour-aged to receive the Sacrament of Penance prior to receiving the Sacraments of the Anointing of the Sick and Holy Communion on February 11, 2016. While it is possible that the sacrament could bring physical healing, Anointing of the Sick is primarily about the healing of hope and of the spirit. Above all, the sacrament allows the person who is ill to unite more closely to Christ’s Passion. This gives suffering a new meaning: a participation in the saving work of Jesus. This is a powerful witness that is for the good of the whole Church (CCC, nos. 1521-22)

For more information, please call Perci at the parish office.
