Word of Life
“In the name of Christ’s Resurrection the Church serves the life that comes from God himself,
in close union with and humble service to the Spirit.”

Pentecost: Inauguration of the
Church
Jesus chose special Jewish celebrations
to reveal to us that he is truly the
Messiah. The Paschal mystery of his
suffering, death and resurrection took
place during the Passover. He chose to
inaugurate the Church fifty days after
the Passover, which is the Jewish feast of Pentecost, the
feast of the first-fruits of the grain harvest. In fulfillment
of his promise to his disciples, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit
from the Father on Pentecost day and thus began the
missionary efforts of the Church. Today’s liturgy
concludes the Easter Season. We must note that the Holy
Spirit did not come into existence at Pentecost because
the Holy Spirit has always existed eternally with the
Father and the Son.
The first reading from the Acts of the Apostles described
what happened as the apostles gathered together with
Mary in the Upper Room. The Holy Spirit came down and
fell on each of them. They spoke in tongues that enabled
people from all over the world to understand what they
were saying. This in no small way emphasized the
universality of the Church right from the beginning. How
did it happen that the disciples could speak in words
intelligible to all those listening? The same disciples who
few days earlier had locked themselves up in the room
because of fear, are now speaking boldly to people. Yes,
they had received the Holy Spirit who is the source of all
guidance, courage and power. Through the outpouring of
the Spirit the Church is empowered to address herself to
all nations and to be understood by them.
Acts 2:12-13 described the reaction of the crowds to the
phenomenon of today. Some wondered what it meant,
while others thought the disciples were drunk. When we
don’t understand something, we sometimes explain it
away or give it a bad name in order for us to push it away.
May be the disciples were truly drunk! They were drunk,
but not with alcohol, but with the Holy Spirit. The Holy
Spirit is one drink we are all encouraged to drink. The
spiritual gifts of the Spirit are abundant. Galatians 5:22
tells us of those wonderful fruits – love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and
self-control. We can never have enough of these fruits.
We have all received the Holy Spirit at our baptism and
confirmation. Are we allowing the gifts and the fruits of
the Spirit to manifest in our lives? We must let go of
ourselves so that the Spirit can truly work within us. The
graces of the Spirit are given according to the capacity of
individuals. If we call on him to fill us afresh today, he
will truly do it, healing our wounds, renewing our
strength, melting the frozen, bending the stubborn hearts,
warming the chill, guiding the steps that go astray and
rewarding the virtuous. And so we pray: Come, Holy
Spirit and fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in
them the fire of your love. Amen
Fall Festival 2017: I am pleased to announce that we
have a Chair and Co-chair for our 2017 Fall Festival. They
are Pauline Brown and Terry Mares respectively. This
pair, together with all the many committee chairs will help
plan and execute this year’s fun and fundraising event that
the community has come to love. I want to thank the
immediate past festival chair, Tony Butera and his
co-chairs, Doug Walker and Rick Swanson, and all our
different committee chairs and volunteers. We had a
wonderful festival last year and it was because of your
sacrifices and involvements. We already have a date for
this year’s festival. It will be held on Sunday, October
22nd. Please mark your calendar now and watch out for
more information in the parish bulletin.
Vacation: As you read this ar ticle, I am already in
Nigeria on vacation during this month of June. I will be
spending most of this time with my parents, grandmothers
and siblings. My grandmothers are well advance in age (in
their late nineties) and I don’t know how much longer I
will get to see them. While away, Fr. Tony will be
available for the pastoral needs of parishioners and will
be assisted by our deacons and parish staff. There will be
some visiting priests to help with Masses during the
period. Please pray for me and my family. I hope to return
at the end of June refreshed and renewed to continue to
serve this wonderful community. For those of you who
will be travelling during the summer, I wish you all safe
travels and God’s protection.

Corpus Christi Procession Flower Boys and Girls Needed!
Congratulations to our children who are receiving their First Holy Communion this year! Before Christ suffered and died He instituted the Holy Eucharist which is the gift of His precious body and blood. Once a year the church celebrates this real and visible presence of Christ in the Eucharist on the Feast of Corpus Christi. This year, the feast will be celebrated on the weekend of June 17/18, 2017 at all Masses. However, as a parish, we will have a Solemn Corpus Christi Procession after the 5 pm Mass on June 18
th with songs and
prayers, and benediction. Therefore I would like to invite our children who made their First Holy Communion to dress in their Holy Communion attire and be our flower girls and boys during the Procession.
Please sign up your children by emailing Rev. Sr. Maria Makuo Dunu, DDL at:
[email protected]. There will be rehearsal on Sunday, June 11 after the 9 am Mass in the church. Thank you!

Pentecost Sunday
Reading 1: Acts 2:1-11: We hear them speaking of the
mighty acts of God. Jesus promised that the gift of the
Holy Spirit would come upon the apostles and Mary; and
on Pentecost, this promise was fulfilled. The Holy Spirit
filled those who prayed in the Upper Room with courage
to speak about the mighty acts of God. We, too, have a
share in this same Spirit, a gift that we received at Baptism
and in greater measure at Confirmation. Let the Holy Spir-
it embolden you to speak about the mighty acts of God
in your life.
Reading 2: 1 COR 12:3b-7, 12-13: To each individual
the Spirit is given for some benefit. St. Paul reminds us
that the gifts of the Spirit were freely given to us to share,
so that others might benefit. As we have freely received,
so should we freely give.
Gospel: John 20:19-23 Jesus said: Peace be with you;
receive the Holy Spirit. Peace in the fullest sense of the
word means so much more than rest, relaxation, serenity,
or lack of war. Peace means wholeness in body and spirit,
mind and heart. The gift of the Holy Spirit heals us,
inspires us, and encourages us. This gift is received by us
– not demanded or taken – but freely given and freely
received. Let us ensure that our hearts are ready to receive
this mighty gift.

Mensaje del Párroco
Pentecostés: Inauguración de la
Iglesia
ciencia, bondad, bondad, confianza, mansedumbre y
autocontrol. Nunca podemos tener suficiente de estas
frutas.
verdaderamente, sanando nuestras heridas, renovando

¡Gracias! P. 14
