Easter Sunday A Scriptural Reflection

Hope Restored

Today Christians around the world gather to celebrate the centrality of their faith—that the Lord Jesus suffered, died, and rose from the dead to bring new life to all who believe. What difference can Easter really make in our lives?

Any difference that Easter can bring can be summed up in one word: hope. Picture yourself as one of the follow-ers of Jesus of Nazareth. The one for whom you had giv-en up everything, the one in whom you had placed all your trust, the one who seemed to be the way to freedom from fear—this one had been put to death in the most horrifying way. He was nailed to a cross, and on that cross it seemed that hope itself breathed its last. Have you ever felt that way—that hope had breathed its last? For many who lose a cherished job, a spouse to death or divorce, a child to drug abuse or disease, there just doesn’t seem to be any hope remaining. This was the kind of despair that Peter, John, and Mary of Magdala must have been feeling on that first day of the week.

Easter: Our Own Story

The Gospel story today is, in a nutshell, the story of our very own lives. It is a story of restored hope. Like those disciples, we must always, when in despair, see and be-lieve that Jesus Christ rose from the dead. When we place our belief in the power of God to raise Jesus from the dead, we also place our belief in the power of God to deliver us from the death of despair, malaise, and hope-lessness. This is at the heart of why we come to church this day. We look to the empty tomb to find hope that was lost. It is for this that we raise heart and voice in an end-less “Alleluia!” Copyright © 2005, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Behavioral Health Team Forming Here at St. Mary Magdalene: The Diocese of San Diego is inviting Catholics to imagine a world where mental illness has lost its stigma—and to help bring that world into being. “The ultimate goal is to create parishes where anyone marginalized by mental illness in any way is fully included in the life of the Church.” (Kent Peters, Diocesan Office of Social Ministry). The San Diego Mental Health Ministry Network has been created to accomplish that goal. In addition to having a licensed mental health counselor on staff, The Church of St. Mary Magdalene is providing specialized training to it’s staff members to minister to parishioners experiencing behavioral health concerns, to provide referrals, to walk them through the treatment process and provide parish-wide education on the subject of mental illness. Our trained staff members will be supplying support from our unique Catholic perspective and tapping into the recipi-ent’s faith tradition and beliefs, a component so often missing in secular care. For more information, contact the parish Pastoral Counselor, Rita McCrerey, at (619) 276-6805.

The Fight to End Human Trafficking: There are more people in slavery today than there were during the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and many of these people are chil-dren. The United States is a source, transit, and destina-tion country for child trafficking. It is, in fact, one of the most significant destination countries worldwide. Often people think of human trafficking in terms of crossing bor-ders, but the term actually is used to indicate that force, fraud, or coercion were used to illicit labor or commercial sex acts. The commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) is always considered human trafficking and is one of the greatest tragedies of our day. Children of the Im-maculate Heart (CIH) was founded to serve those who are vulnerable due to human trafficking. It seeks to reach out to women and children directly in the trafficking industry as well as those made vulnerable in trafficking-dependent industries. For more information on how you can become involved, contact the Diocesan Office for Social Ministry at (858) 490-8323.

Domestic Violence Outreach: Safe Place Faith Com-munity (SPFC) is an outreach ministry designed to assist families within a congregation experiencing domestic vio-lence, and has been re-established at St. Pius X Parish in Chula Vista. For more information about Safe Place Faith Community, contact the Diocesan Office for Social Minis-try at (858) 490-8323.

Please feel free to pick up a copy of this month’s Sunday Gospels & Reflection Questions for Home Reflection. They can be found on the counter in the vestibule of the church.

The Second Sunday of Easter, will be observed throughout the Church as Divine Mercy Sunday. To encourage its celebration with special devotion, the observance has been enriched by a plenary indulgence (complete for-giveness of sins and punishment) which is granted to the faithful by the

Pope under the usual conditions: Sacramental confes-sion, Eucharistic communion, and prayers for the in-tentions of the Holy Father.

The requirement of sacramental confession is satis-fied by all who remain in the state of grace following their Lenten celebration of the Sacrament of Penance. The other conditions will be included within all cele-brations of the Eucharist in this parish on Divine Mer-cy Sunday:

† In the Penitential Rite, we will implore the mercy of God to be detached from all affection for sin, even venial sin.

† In the General Intercessions, we will pray for the Holy Father and his Intentions and for the greater fidelity in our lives to works of charity and mercy, concluding with a devout prayer to our merciful Lord Jesus.

† As always, we will pray together the Creed and the Our Father, that as God forgives us we will pardon those who sin against us.

Following the 11:00 a.m. Mass on April 12th, you are invited to Divine Mercy prayers for peace and Bene-diction.

We joyously welcome the newest members of our faith community who was baptized here recently.

Stewardship: The Good News

Jesus Christ is risen today!

We have sung and exclaimed this truth today at all the Masses and will continue our joy throughout the 50-day Easter season that culminates in the celebration of Pen-tecost with the coming of the Holy Spirit. What is our response to this good news? That we believe in Christ and, because of our baptism, we are called to live out our true identity in him.

Christ left us to be in charge of the kingdom.

Stewardship is not exclusive. We are one church. This is something we say we believe. Each of us has a place where we can be effective and stewardship invites us to share our gifts with that in mind. The apostles brought their diverse gifts to the Church when Christ called them. Jesus called twelve unique personalities to initiate the building of the kingdom. Peter was the natural leader. John the sensitive and caring one who was beloved by Christ. Matthew was the financial talent. Simon and Jude were natural preachers. The same is true at our parish. We have all the unique gifts to share in the life of the church and community right here. Stewardship helps us to break this down so that we will know how to ad-vance the kingdom.

A good steward is one who lives in grace. A good stew-ard is one who is learning to give, who is becoming holy. Isn’t that speaking to all of us?

At St. Mary Magdalene, the invitation to participate is extended to everyone. We have the Easter season to pray and privately discern our particular gifts. At Pente-cost, the “birthday of the Church”, our prayers may lead us to a new or renewed time of becoming involved here, in our Catholic community.

There is always the vision of what a great parish can be. When we practice good stewardship, making time for and sharing our resources with the parish and those in need, it happens.

Rosary Maker’s Guild Fund Raiser

Do you need a gift for someone special? Are you looking for a First Communion gift, something for mom on Mother's Day or for dad on Father Day, a graduation, or Confirmation gift? Remember to Support Our Advertisers!

Our Sunday bulletin is an important way for us to com-municate with you. The parish does not pay for the print-ing, saving us thousands of dollars each year. The JS Paluch Company arranges for the bulletin to be support-ed through the generosity of the businesses that you see advertised on the back cover. Most of these adver-tisers are members of our local community, and many belong to our parish.
