Girl Scout PromiseOn my honor, I will try: To serve God* & my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Girl Scout LawI will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

*Girl Scouts makes no attempt to define or interpret the word “God” in the Girl Scout Promise. We look

to individual members to establish for themselves the nature of their spiritual beliefs. When making the Girl Scout Promise, individuals may substitute wording appropriate to their own spiritual beliefs

for the word “God.”

Dear Girl Scout Family & Friends,

The Girl Scout movement has been at the forefront of building women leaders and advancing the status of girls for more than 100 years. 2016 was certainly a year during which we saw both how far female leadership has come and how much further we have left to go. Everyday there is a glass ceiling to be shattered, and the women who will shatter them are today’s Girl Scouts. It’s in their DNA to create positive change and make our world a better place.

At its core, the Girl Scout experience is girl-driven and girl-led, empowering girls to thrive. Every troop meeting, leadership program, and camp experience allows girls to build courage to try new things, to gain confidence in their capabilities, and to demonstrate character in how they act. We also know that the skills and drive our program imparts stays with girls as they grow, learn, and lead. Girl Scouting isn’t just a kindergarten to high school experience – it’s an experience that lasts a lifetime.

In 2016, the Girl Scouts of Central & Southern NJ impacted the lives of 19,053 girls. Guiding our girls and troops was a dedicated volunteer force of 10,057 individuals who believe in the power of the Girl Scout Movement, and most importantly, believe in the power of the girls. The ripple effect of positive leadership by our girls in our local towns and communities is vast. Just look at the 1,005 Take Action service projects completed by girls for their Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards alone. Each and every day, we know that there is a Girl Scout somewhere in our region who is thinking and dreaming about her future. Showing her that G.I.R.L.s - the go-getters, risk takers, innovators, and leaders™ inspire her to make those dreams reality.

As we look back on all that was accomplished in 2016, we also face forward to the future. We want to bring the Girl Scout experience to more girls in Central and Southern New Jersey, especially those girls in communities who need us most. To support that growth, we need to engage more adults – as volunteers, donors, ambassadors and partners in Girl Scouting. If each one of us who is currently involved identifies and engages just one additional adult, we’d be well poised to serve more girls throughout the region.

To all our supporters and volunteers last year – Thank You! You are cultivating the groundbreakers, big thinkers, and role models of tomorrow and your gifts of time, talent and treasure make a difference.

Yours in Scouting,

Carolyn Rutsky, Board ChairGinny Marino, CEO

MembershipTo me, Girl Scouts has been a great experience, especially working on my Gold Award. I’ve learned so much about team work, leadership, responsibility, and communication. Girl Scouts has been a great outlet for me for all these years, not to mention the cookies are delicious! - Jaclyn, 16, Cherry Hill

While some people still think of us as just cookies, badges, campfires, and friendship bracelets, Girl Scouts are so much more. Girl Scouts are groundbreakers, big thinkers, and role models. Girl Scouts design robots, start garage bands, and improve their communities—and yes, they sell the best cookies on the planet.

When she’s a Girl Scout, she’s also a G.I.R.L. -(Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™.

These are the traits that define girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. This is the Girl Scout DNA.

Girl Scouting helps girls develop their leadership potential through activities that help them discover their values and skills, connect with others in a multi-cultural environment, and take action to make a difference in the world.

Our Membership’s Voices Count:

• 95% of girls say they feel like they belong.

Lead Like a Girl Scout

5

She’s bold, honest, and determined to succeed. Goal oriented and ambitious, she’s also a life-long learner who believes no challenge is too difficult!

Thinking outside the box is her specialty, so she’s always looking for a creative way to take action. She definitely knows how to get things done.

Courageous and strong, she’s keen to try new things and to embrace the unfamiliar. She’s ready to step up and break the mold if that’s what it takes.

She’s confident, responsible, and committed to changing the world for the better—and she’s happiest when others join her in taking the lead! - Statistics from 2016 Voices Count Survey

Jiwon’s Gold Award:“Always Crafting”

The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. Open only to girls in high school, this prestigious award challenges her to change the world—or at least her corner of it. By the time a Girl Scout puts the final touches on her seven-step project and completes her minimun of 80 hours, she’ll have solved a community problem—not only in the short term, but for years into the future.

Bronze. Silver. Gold. These awards represent the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn. All three awards give a girl the chance to do big things while working on an issue that’s captured her interest in a big way.

Whether she wants to plant a community garden at her school and inspire others to eat healthily for a Bronze Award, advocate for animal rights for a Silver Award, or build a career network that encourages girls to become scientists and engineers for a Gold Award, she’ll inspire others and herself. Every year, these projects take place in a girl’s local community and make a sustainable impact throughout the region.

This year, GSCSNJ is proud to report that over 1,000 Girl Scouts earned awards through a “Take Action” Project. 724 Girl Scouts earned the Bronze Award, 184 Girl Scouts earned the Silver Award, while 97 Girl Scouts earned the Girl Scout Gold Award for 2016.

My project shaped me as leader and created some of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had. I became

confident in my ability to change many lives in the future.

- Veda, 16, West Windsor

Jiwon used crafting workshops to help children at Homefront, a housing and homeless shelter, express themselves. Jiwon created a way for the children to express their pent-up feelings and emotions through art, while gaining a love for crafting at the same time.

“It was amazing to see the improvement in the children’s attitudes and I’m so glad to have been able to influence other people with my passion.” As a result of her Gold Award, Jiwon will take special education classes in college because she had so much fun working with the children.

Sure, the cookies and nuts are awesomely delicious, but beyond the sweet treat, Girl Scout Product Programs are an incredible opportunity for girls to do extraordinary things. The knowledge and skills learned serves girls for a lifetime. Girls gain essential skills, not from a book, but from real-life experiences building a strong foundation for success.

Product Programs are a fun way for girls to earn money to support their dreams, and it’s a hands-on leadership and financial literacy program unlike any other in the world. 96% of parents reported that their daughters learned a new financial skill from participation in the cookie program.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program teaches girls five important skills:

Goal Setting: Girls set cookie sales goals individually and create a plan to reach them. Decision Making: Girls help decide how her team spends their cookie money, furthering critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Money Management: Girls take cookie orders, handle customers’ money, and gain valuable and practical life skills around financial literacy.

People Skills: Girls learn how to talk to, listen to and work with all kinds of people while selling cookies - including developing healthy relationships and conflict resolution skills.

Business Ethics: Girls learn honesty and responsibility at every step of the cookie sale. Developing business ethics reinforces the positive values a girl learns as a Girl Scout.

Over 13,500 girls participated in the annual Cookie Program with an increased per girl average of 166 boxes. Our Taste of Home cookie donations to the military increased this year for a total of 1,951 cases or 23,412 boxes of cookies.

5Volunteers Make A Difference

Volunteers introduce girls to new experiences and help them unleash their true potential - to take the lead and change the world. Volunteers are our first line of positive impact, the first touch, our ground level mentors. Our volunteers introduce girls to new experiences that show them they’re capable of more than they’ve ever imagined.

Each year, we recognize outstanding volunteers for devotion, support, and impact on the lives of Girl Scouts at Celebrate 2016. The Adult Recognition Celebration shined the spotlight on volunteers who have gone above and beyond to help girls achieve their dreams. It was a time to show appreciation to volunteers and let them hear the applause for all their hard work and dedication. In 2016, we recognized 3 Honor Awardees, 5 Thanks Badge Recipients, 9 Appreciation Awardees, 16 STAR Service Units, and 11 Spirit Award Honorees.

Without the 64 Service Units, 104 Service Unit Managers, and 3,307 outstanding Troop Leaders, GSCSNJ simply could not carry out our mission.

Our Volunteers say....

• 95% of volunteers say they make girls’ lives better at GirlScouts (and that makes them happy).

• 88% of Girl Scout volunteers say their volunteer experiencewith us makes their life better.

• Two-thirds of volunteers say Girl Scouts has helped themprofessionally.

Community Development

GSCSNJ takes a targeted outreach and community partnership approach to bring a FUN Girl Scout Leadership experience to girls with limited resources. Focusing specifically on girls in distressed, low-income, inner-city environments, we aim to increase the number of girls who benefit from being a Girl Scout. We provide staff resources that mimic volunteer troop leader guidance while fostering collaborative relationships that focus on identifying new volunteers in targeted communities. We believe that every girl should have a chance to be a Girl Scout.

This year, GSCSNJ worked with 47 community partners to serve 2,686 girls in eight counties – outreaching to 13 targeted communities within our council. These partnerships are key to families accepting and trusting Girl Scouts as a resource for their child. Because of this interdependence, our membership growth is directly related to community success. Girl Scouts is dedicated to helping communities thrive and hopes to continue to grow in targeted community development areas.

With these community development efforts, our membership is enriched by the diversity of our region. We are so grateful to our generous partners that provide time, funds and many resources to bring Girl Scouts to communities far and wide.

According to our member surveys, 64% of girls state that they gain practical life skills as a result of their community development troop experience. Compared with the national average of only 50%, these results demonstrate that our community development partnerships are helping girls’ dreams come true.

Girl Scouting reaches far and wide to help girls and their families!

11

63 girls from 4 public schools participated in the program. We offered 3 sessions, 1 in the

winter and 2 in the spring.

Our service to girls in community development areas has continued to increase year over year.

Community Highlight

The Eat Healthy/Live Healthy program was a collaboration of NJ SNAP-Ed of

Rutgers Cooperative Extension and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. These

partners put on four, 2-hour healthy, hands-on cooking classes & four physical

activities (like aquatic Zumba) at RWJ Fitness Center. Girls planned meals,

cooked, and presented their recipes - while boosting their self-esteem and feeling

accomplished.

Community Highlight!

Eat healthy/live healthy program was a collaboration of community partners, specifically RWJ, SNAP-ED and GSCSNJ. These partners put on 4 healthy cooking classes & 4 physical activities at RWJ Fitness Center. The value per girl was $50 for the cooking session, which was paid for by RWJ $2000. Next, 20 hours for 10 fitnes sessions cost $2000 and were provided by SNAP-ED.

In partnering with the community, Girl Scouts can carefully craft new, exciting programs and reach into the heart of communities to make a difference.

Without community partners, our reach is not as far and wide.

Girl Scout camp is unique in that it is girl-led. With the help of their leaders, girls of every age get the chance to be involved in planning, organizing, and evaluating their camp activities. Girls are empowered as they gain confidence and learn creative thinking, leadership, and decision-making skills.

Camping is a great way for girls to explore leadership, build skills, and develop a deep appreciation for nature. Whether for a day, a week, or longer, Girl Scout camp gives girls an opportunity to grow, explore, and have fun under the guidance of caring, trained adults.

GSCSNJ has four amazing camp properties available, with year-round troop and group camping, as well as summer camp programs for girls.

Last year, 1,709 summer campers had the opportunity to zip line, canoe, swim, shoot an arrow, climb a rockwall, learn about the environment, make new friends, build confidence, and just be themselves. 95% of girls surveyed tried something new while outdoors; and 88% self-reported “I learned something new about myself.”

Here are two of our favorite camp stories

Ariana has been coming to Camp Inawendiwin for many years. She is known as the friendly, outgoing girl that always gets people pumped up and ready for the next event. Ariana attended the “Ready, Set, Rock & Roll” week at camp, where she put together a music group and made an original song: “S’mores”. Part of the song included a solo from Ariana - but stage fright took over. Ariana was so worried she would mess up her lines in front of all the other campers during her final performance. After motivation from the rest of her “band” and support from camp staff, she was able to conquer her stage fright and nailed her solo!

When Bryana first came to Camp Sacajawea as a Brownie, she was very shy and reluctant to talk to other campers. After only one summer at camp, her mom shared how Bryana started to come out of her shell and even approached a new classmate at school one day. Each summer since, we have seen Bryana build her confidence a little more - pushing herself to talk to new campers and to sing a little louder. She is now a Camp Aide and is setting goals for herself to expand her comfort zone. Bryana is quite social and is always the first to notice when a shy camper needs a confidence boost.

GS Leadership ExperienceOur Troop Support & Experiences Team provided 516 Council sponsored programs which served 17,375 girl and adult members. Girl Scout programs focused on 4 key areas: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), outdoor experiences, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship. Each program aligns with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, a model that gives girls a chance to Discover who they are, Connect with people, and Take Action to make the world a better place.

GSCSNJ offered a variety of experiences this year, most notably, a STEM Conference, a travel opportunity to Disney World, a dog-sledding day, several archery clinics, a steamboat and environment day, and a budget program at Republic Bank.

The Girl Scout STEM Conference was the second of its kind. Girls from grades 2-12 gathered at the Frick Chemistry Laboratory at Princeton University to explore STEM topics. Girls chose a “track” to focus on during the day, and spent two workshops working on experiments. Girls in the chemistry track performed science experiments with kitchen ingredients. Bouncy balls and slime provided an introduction to polymers, and in the afternoon, they tested rocket fuels outside.

In the special FIRST Robotics session, the First Tech Challenge Robotics Team W.A.G.S. (We Are Girl Scouts) led Brownies, Juniors and Cadettes in a robot building-and-programming session. Finally, The Science Education Department of the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab supplied equipment to demonstrate the properties of the fourth state of matter, plasma. Girls went back again and again to get “charged up.”
