Providing emergency response data:✘Makes large-scale evacuation faster and easier✘Allows first responders to create entrance and exit plans

before arrival✘Increases school awareness of evacuation policies

Creating the digital building map:✘Start with the paper floor plan. Do a walk through of the

building to check the accuracy of the floor plans. Add any necessary components such as doors, fire extinguishers, security cameras, fire alarms, and tornado shelters.

✘Add details such as room numbers, room use, number of students, and teacher name.

✘Add emergency point layer. This shows the locations of all fire extinguishers, tornado shelters, and security cameras.

✘Add layer for utilities shut-off.

Safety in Modern Times:✘There have been at least 171 school shootings in the

United States since 2013.✘Improved preparedness for emergency personnel

increases the chances for successful rescues.✘Digital maps can be easily changed according to evolving

school floor plans to keep emergency personnel up to date unlike the previously used paper maps that were hard to find and inaccurate.
