By the first week of my freshman year, I was already influenced

by the urban legend that survival of Calculus BC would grant

you the namesake of a mathematical genius and a T-shirt of

Josie’s Babies. Although I can attest that we were given shirts,

these past four years under Mrs. Mallery’s guidance, however,

have been most inspiring to me. I am awestruck at how Mrs.

Mallery illustrates why curves are “sexy” and formulas are not

to be memorized but to be derived, devotes countless hours to

her classes and to our afterschool activities, and offers personal

feedback to every student who walks through her doors with

her unwavering can-do attitude. I am not sure if these words

even come close to expressing how grateful I am to have known

her, for these memorable years in math club have sparked

my curiosity and the many experiences have broadened my

interests. You have encouraged me to believe in myself, trek

forward, and live life to the fullest with enthusiasm. Thank you,

Mrs. Mallery.

PLANS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL

DISTINGUISHED EDUCATOR

I plan to major in electrical engineering and attend Stanford University, University of California Berkeley or University of Texas at Austin.

Col. Steven WarrKlein High School

I didn’t know what I was getting into when I first signed up

to take Computer Science classes my freshman year. What I

found was an inspiring teacher and a deep interest in computer

programming. Col. Warr has gotten me involved with the

computer science club, Computer Science UIL competition as

well as the robotics club. These clubs have had a great influence

on my high school career helping me meet many new friends

and think outside the box. Colonel’s passion for teaching is very

evident through the excitement and enthusiasm he shows on a

daily basis. I have never had as much fun in any other subject. He

has increased my interest in technology and now I am confident

in my aspirations to become an electrical engineer. I am glad that

he was my teacher every single year of high school; I couldn’t

imagine what my life would be like if I never took his class.

Art was always a hobby of mine, nothing more, nothing less,

but all of that changed the day I entered John Rodak’s art

room. He was like a fairy godmother, a very sarcastic Chinese-

proverb spouting fairy godmother. Each one of Mr. Rodak’s

projects were unique and pushed his students both mentally

and technically. His liberal and slightly eccentric approach

to teaching art also gave me unprecedented artistic freedom.

Along with learning dozens of new techniques and medias, the

class was never boring due to Mr. Rodak’s endless arsenal of

anecdotes about anything from giant wasp nests to Chinese mob

bosses to Beatles conspiracies. Under his guidance, Mr. Rodak

cultivated my love for art into a fierce passion. Now looking back

as the National Art Honor Society President completing my AP

art portfolio, I see how far I’ve come from that little girl doodling

on the corners of her math worksheets, and none of it would

have happened without John Rodak. I will never be able to thank

him enough for his faith and patience with me.

I can’t pinpoint when or how my interpersonal bond with Mrs. Hermsdorf started, like how an electron’s position and velocity can’t be simultaneously determined, but she holds a special place in my cardiac atoms. If someone walks into her class, it’ll look supremely entropic. She’s lecturing, and students are finishing labs, talking, or dying from chemistry overdose. She doesn’t try to stagnate the chaos because she knows the universe favors entropy and more importantly, she is more like a mother than just a teacher. She holds great faith in her student’s abilities. She sacrifices hours after school to explain concepts or labs. She knows there are classes besides chemistry. She comforts her students when not even their friends can. She accepts her student’s failures but builds successes with them. With her unrivaled passion and devotion, she provided more than weekly quotes and an understanding of painful redox reactions. She did not only dictate my direction in life for the foreseeable future, she fostered numerous skills, habits, and qualities that are now embedded in my chemical makeup. But through her unselfish love, the most significant concept she ingrained in me was to think of others first. She taught me to smile even when I’m struggling because that smile might just make someone’s day.

Ms. Haggard at Klein High is basically the teacher equivalent

to a really popular kid at school. She’s cool, funny, and the type

of teacher that you hear about before even starting high school.

Since my freshman year, I have had the pleasure of learning from

Ms. Haggard through my participation in Health Occupations

Students of America and as a student in her Health Science class.

From the clinical rotations to our Public Service Announcement

productions, to the forty page career project, every moment

under Ms. Haggard’s guidance has been fun, informative, and

memorable. The passion she has for teaching, the motivation she

instills in her students, and the commitment she has to her many

responsibilities greatly inspires me. Though Klein High has named

her teacher of the year, to me, she’s the teacher of a lifetime.

Thank you, Ms. Haggard, for being a one-of-a-kind teacher and a

friend for life!

When I heard about physics, I thought that it was a subject

where I would memorize a bunch of formulas. However, Mrs.

Pluckhahn changed that. Every day, I walked into class, excited

by the new topics we were going to learn. We discussed the

nature of motion with hard boiled eggs thrown across the room

and carts rolling down blocks of wood. Physics became not just

a bunch of formulas, but a description of the world around me,

from the planets to the electricity in my home. Mrs. Pluckhahn

pushed me to look beyond the equations and to explore the

world around me. She is not only inspiring but cares about

her students more than anything else, explaining topics until

everyone understands. Even after she had her baby, she came

back to teach us the topics we didn’t get a chance to discuss.

So thank you, Mrs. Pluckhahn, for opening my eyes to the

world and for being so kind and thoughtful toward all of your

students.

I have had the privilege of knowing Coach Cannon for the

past two years as my tennis coach and as my Science National

Honor Society sponsor. I was instantly drawn to her enthusiasm

for tennis, passion for chemistry, and love for learning. The

determination she displays in everyday challenges, whether it

be a difficult Hess’s Law problem or a seemingly unsolvable

WordBrain puzzle, serves to epitomize the approach to life’s

hurdles I hope to emulate. But above all, the attribute Coach

Cannon possesses which has inspired me the most is her resolve

to never give up and always stay positive to the very end. She

has instilled within me the mindset of always giving my all

every time I step onto the court and to treat every point as if

it were the last. With Coach Cannon’s guidance and advice,

no matter how rough the start, I feel encouraged to push

through, defy the odds, and turn the situation around for the

better. Thank you, Coach Cannon, for shaping my outlook on

overcoming the challenges of tennis and life.

With a passion for teaching, Mrs. Bowersock made my fourth grade experience an unforgettable year filled with awe-inspiring learning, an abundance of laughs and ear-to-ear smiles. Every day her classroom offered an engaging adventure and every afternoon I came home from school with a smile. Mrs. Bowersock fostered a contagious passion for learning in her classroom and within me. She encouraged my creativity and outgoing personality through skits and projects while developing a solid foundation for my successful academic career. She crafted some of my most favorite memories through her wonderful activities such as teaching our class to sew by making a Texas-themed classroom quilt. Her gumball machine, an exciting treat for hard work, created many smiles as well as good grades. The valiant stories of Texas heroes came to life through her animated story-telling. Most importantly, Mrs. Bowersock awakened the best qualities within myself that made me successful in my high school career. She is a remarkable woman and teacher. Her warm heart and caring personality spreads joy to every individual she meets. Mrs. Bowersock did for me, one of the hardest accomplishments a teacher can ever do – she made learning fun and made me love learning.

Although I’ve had the privilege of knowing Mr. Herron for

only 3 years now, his character and personality will forever

have an impact on my life. Whether it was the school trips that

resulted in seemingly endless days of make-up work or the

countless hours spent outside of class rehearsing, preparing,

and practicing, his genuine interest to push the success of his

students beyond their expectations is an important attribute that

I will never forget. From walking into the orchestra room at

obscure hours only to find him still busily working in his office

to seeing his one-on-one mentoring sessions with students,

Mr. Herron always made time for his students, no matter how

packed his schedule. I have seen first-hand the encouraging

actions of a teacher whose unwavering belief in his students has

ultimately shaped a large part of my character. I am so grateful

to have had music serve as our vehicle of communication in

discovering the truly telling details and beauties of life. Thank

you, Mr. Herron, for being the epitome of dedication and

From my first hesitant day of high school to my last days in

a Klein classroom, Ms. Burgess has always been by my side.

Ever since I could pick up a pencil, I have been scribbling and

sketching away. Now graduated from markers and crayons, I’ve

mastered the techniques of gesture drawing and proportions

of the human body, in large part to Ms. Burgess’ efforts.

Not only does Ms. Burgess incorporate technical aspects of

visual arts in her teaching, she encourages her students to

expand upon and challenge the boundaries of traditional art.

I entered her classroom unsure of my artistic merit, but with

her encouragement and critique, I developed a sense of artistic

freedom that has encompassed every area of study, whether it be

the intricacies of a Taylor series or the balance of a reduction-

oxidation reaction. Ms. Burgess is not afraid to speak her mind,

a trait notorious amongst her students, but her candor and

sincerity are always catalysts for improvement. I will greatly miss

her wit and advice, but I believe her conviction and appreciation

of the fine arts will permanently affect my outlook on the world.

D. Burg, thank you for everything.

The first time I sauntered into Room 811 was the day I decided to face my fears. Upon entrance of Mr. Mundo’s classroom, I was plagued by ruminating thoughts: “You’re going to be the only girl. You know nothing about Computer Science. You’re going to fail, just like the students before you.” David must have felt that same despair while standing before the great Goliath. Yet like the biblical figure, I persevered in spite of all the odds against me.

Mr. Mundo exposed me to such an interesting discipline. His labs and lectures helped me discover another level of problem-solving and reasoning. In addition to teaching me everything from algorithms to object-oriented programming, he has served as my trusted mentor and friend. Since my sophomore year, we have had our share of eating celebratory doughnuts together (only after he scores a tennis victory) and laughter (as I am the only one who finds his dad-jokes hilarious). Thank you for everything, Mr. Mundo. Have fun driving around your future team to competitions next year. Go easy on the “Mexican U-turns”!!!

Before I even met Ms. Rothfeld, I was already excited to be her AP US History student. My older sister informed me all about her unique personality and sense of humor. The rumors I heard of her blunt sarcasm were supposed to serve as a warning, but I can safely say that her relatable sarcastic comments made me love being her student even more. When I finally met Ms. Rothfeld, I knew instantly that she would quickly become my favorite teacher. Her tough exterior and hilarious sarcasm coupled altogether makes her a one-of-a-kind person. However, the one thing that I admire about Ms. Rothfeld above all else is her strength. Her resilience after her victorious battle with cancer inspires me to stay positive, even in times of adversity. She continually motivates me to work towards my goals and always encourages me to chase after my dreams, no matter how big or small they are. Ms. Rothfeld is not just a teacher to me, she is a life-long friend and I am so honored to have been her student. Rothy Rocks!

Chemistry was the most memorable of my classes of my high

school education. I would have never found an interest in

chemistry if I had not had Ms. Dano as my teacher for both

Pre-AP and AP Chemistry. Although I believe that chemistry is

one of the hardest subjects to teach and comprehend, Ms. Dano

created a friendly and interactive environment that allowed

all of her students to feel safe and inspired to work in. When

a lesson that no one really enjoys comes up, Ms. Dano finds a

way to lighten the mood and make it fun to learn by creating

fun acronyms like “ICE, ICE Baby!” when we were learning

Acid-Base Equilibrium or jokingly threatening us to turn in our

work by exclaiming to us, “MINUS TEN”! All in all, Ms. Dano

has really inspired me to push my limits and my education

knowing that with enough work and effort, anything is possible

Madame Watson’s passion and work ethic inspires me as she

pushes through the stress of everything from hosting Texas

French Symposium to teaching 4 levels of French and to being a

mom and grandma. Her strength gives me the power to achieve

my goals, because no matter how tired I am, I will never be as

tired as Madame is grading papers in her dimly lit kitchen at 2

a.m.

Above all, Madame has taught me to love French, showing me

something I can cherish for years to come. She gave me a spark

of light in my life and fire in my belly, making me a happier and

more hard working person. I have spent 3 years with Madame,

and I don’t know what I’ll do without her after graduation. She is

simply an incredibly important person in my life. In sophomore

Mr. Collins impacted my life in many ways during and

following my time as his student. I had the privilege to have him

as my Chemistry and AP Chemistry teacher both sophomore

and junior year. Mr. Collins taught me to dedicate myself to the

course by being diligent in my studies independently. Not only

did he prepare me for success in college, but he taught me how

to have a great work ethic. I learned to excel in my leadership

abilities during participation in labs and study groups. Mr.

Collins has inspired my passion for chemistry due to his

personal work ethic and love for teaching the subject. Further,

he is very dedicated to his studies and he himself is pursuing

another Masters Degree while raising a newborn son and his

When asked in what way Coach Wylie has impacted my life,

I cannot give a brief response, because she is my definition of

encouragement, love, and success. Coach Wylie is unique in

her demeanor and unlike any other that I have encountered,

her heart of gold has taught me the importance of investing in

others. She helped transform the timid and energetic freshmen

from four years ago, into the brave leader that I am today. I came

to her about my problems and she demonstrated sincerity in her

advice, when I felt discouraged she lent her support, when I felt

low she lifted me up, and through everything she has shown me

favor. She definitely has earned a spot in my personal Hall of

My algebra II teacher, Ms. Hudson, helped me through a lot

during my sophomore year. Sophomore year was when I first

took an AP class, so you should already know that it wasn’t

going to be an easy ride! Throughout most of sophomore year,

I always had the mindset of not wanting to go to college, but

Ms. Hudson saw the potential in me and wouldn’t stand to let

that happen. She would motivate me to strive more and to go

beyond what most students have done. She always had a lot of

confidence in me, which really helped me to give in to the idea

of going to college. Her teaching style also made the class a lot

more enjoyable, which I would think that would be pretty hard

to do especially for Algebra II! Now because of Ms. Hudson, I

am going into the field of Mathematics to pursue my education

into becoming a math teacher. I greatly appreciate that I was

one of her students.

Taking her class for two years may be a daunting idea for some

with those drawn out PowerPoints, but with Dr. Rodriguez

and her slight country twang, it was a memorable experience.

Somehow, between the title and the time her son did some wacky

thing, Dr. Rodriguez kept the class moving from snoozing to

cruising. In the beginning, Dr. Rodriguez tried her hardest to

show a stern face ready to warn us of the harsh future ahead, but

as time went on, we all soon realized that underneath that look

was the biggest child in the room. An antithesis made especially

comical when she made those cheesy jokes and strolled back

to her fancy reading glasses, but all these jokes had the special

effect of just clicking when outlandish analogies clashed with

medical terminology. From the classroom to the real world, there

was never a doubt in your own ability. Dr. Rodriguez eased the

transition from PowerPoints to mingling among doctors and to

going out of your way to snatch the next opportunity in the form

of surgical masks and operating tables.

Government was by no means the class that I was looking

forward to when I got my schedule on the first day of school. It

just seemed like that boring class that I had to take in order to

graduate. However boring the subject of government may be,

Mr. Hooper made it by far one of my most enjoyable classes.

He always knew how to keep the class engaged in a topic that

otherwise would’ve been extremely boring. Not only that, but

Mr. Hooper also knew how to include real life applications, a

large part of the class, explaining his experiences as a lawyer

and telling us what we should expect as we grow old. Although

AP government wasn’t the class I performed the best in, or

even close to the class I performed the best in, I’m glad I met

a person like Mr. Hooper to show me that success is always

within reach if you’re willing to try. And besides, you only

Ever since I could remember, I’ve always had a passion about

Social Studies. The first day of my sophomore year, I decided

to take AP World History, my first AP class ever. I remember

walking in for the very first time to see a short, loud, corky lady.

The first time I heard, “Ok class, It’s DAWE TIME!” I knew I

was in for a long year. However, my thoughts about Ms. Dawe

quickly changed, she taught her class with such passion that my

love for history grew leaps and bounds. She challenged me to

become a better student, as her class taught me to manage my

time. Even though the class was “world history”, I made sure

we talked about current events. Ms. Dawe taught me how to

look at an issue from both sides. My experience was so good my

sophomore year, I decided to take European History my junior

year. Ms. Dawe is one of the most influential teachers I’ve ever

One of the first teachers I met when I entered high school was

my math coach, Mr. Rice. Though I may not have realized it

at the time, in the next four years, Mr. Rice would provide me

with everything I needed to be successful. In the process of

finding my own drive and developing a love for mathematics,

Mr. Rice was a consistent source of support. He taught me

Calculus concepts as a sophomore, accompanied the team

to numerous contests, and presented me with countless

opportunities. In junior year, I took Mr. Rice’s Calculus BC

class which confirmed that math would undoubtedly be a part

of my future studies and career. The fascinating concepts in

Calculus and Mr. Rice’s ability to clearly explain them were just

a few reasons I looked forward to being in his class every single

day. I’m lucky to have a teacher who believes in me the way Mr.

Rice does. His high expectations and unwavering confidence in

my abilities have encouraged me to take risks and test my limits.

I first had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Camerino my freshman

year while taking Geometry Pre-AP. As a teacher, Mrs.

Camerino kept the classroom exciting and filled with witty

comments. Being a very intimidated young freshman, I loved

going to her class and leaving with a new joke and a smile. She

pushed me to excel in math and never allowed me to settle for

less than I was capable of. I will especially miss her analogies

between my silly mathematical mistakes and surgical capabilities.

Midway through my freshman year, my dad became extremely

sick, and Mrs. Camerino turned into one of my greatest friends. I

was able to confide in her, and she allowed me to see the brighter

side of my circumstances. She helped me through a very difficult

Mr. Mellen has always been unconventional. From the moment

he walked into class, my freshman year, with his classic cup of

coffee, I noticed that his class was conducted differently than

my other courses. Unlike many of my teachers, Mr. Mellen

focused on not only thoroughly teaching a topic but also on

challenging the students who excelled in computer science. This

kept the class extremely engaging as I was constantly being

exposed to new and stimulating material. Through the countless

in-class peer-to-peer programming competitions, he taught the

importance of teamwork and creative thinking. He invested an

immense amount of time letting us practice in his room after

school and going to different competitions with us during the

weekends. But one of the most valuable skills I acquired from

him was getting to the point in my computer science education

where I could self-sufficiently pursue my own interests. Though

some may question his methods, my interest in computer

science was truly ignited by Mr. Mellen and I do not believe I

would be pursuing this career without his guidance.

Mrs. Kowis has been more than an educator to me. Yes, she

was a wonderful teacher and gave me an excellent foundation

for my future math studies, but she was also an amazing role

model for me during a pivotal time in my life. A school can be

a place lacking in empathy and patience, both from teachers

and students. At a time when students like me are soaking up

everything we see, it is vital that we soak up the sort of positivity

and warmth that keeps the world spinning, and that is what I

I have yet to meet someone more passionate about their

him closely during marching season, and his dedication and

integrity for both the program and the students encouraged me

a student under Mr. Clearwater has imbued characteristics in

me that I would never have received in my core classes. I put

my heart into our band program because I saw Mr. Clearwater

put his everything into it first – he inspired me to strive to be the

best I can be. I remember conducting our last marching show

my high school career. I have never been more proud to be a

I have always been the type of student to work to memorize and

learn the material word for word. This strategy worked for me

for the first three years of my high school career, so I continued

to repeat this routine for every quiz, test, and project I was

asked to complete. My mindset completely changed though,

when I entered Mr. Blake’s class, and he brought strange words

like stuffed animal pants and viking kitties into my vocabulary.

Through interesting lectures and a touch of comedy, Mr. Blake

taught me to read the curriculum as more than facts and figures.

Instead, I learned to take an active role in my education and

apply my learning to the evolving world around me. His teaching

empowered me to no longer simply react to the changes around

me, but to take an active part in questioning the world and

applying the facts and figures that I love to it. Mr. Blake is truly

I can strongly say that my love for mathematics throughout

my high school career can be attributed to Mrs. Long. It was

because of the facts, methods, and techniques that I learned in

her class that I was able to succeed in my later math classes. All

of the things that she taught me served as my foundation, my

steady rock that I could always rely on. Her quirky personality

and brilliant sense of humor also lifted me up whenever I was

feeling down. If I had two words to describe Mrs. Long, it would

be these two: Sass Master. Her bright and often witty remarks

never failed to amuse me during class. Her love for books also

influenced me to continue reading, and when we had time during

class, we tended to share our thoughts on books that we had both

read. Even now that I am a senior, Mrs. Long has not changed.

Whenever I am tutoring in her classroom after school, she is

always helping other students reach their full potential by giving

Though I did not have the privilege of having Mrs. Parliament

as an underclassman for Algebra 2, I occasionally came to her

room after school for UIL math practices and eventually had

this wonderful teacher for AP Statistics. Teaching a unique math

course, Mrs. Parliament clearly knows how to help her students

develop the right perspective towards Statistics.

Simplicity – a word that defines Mrs. Parliament’s teaching style.

I am fascinated by Mrs. Parliament’s efforts to plan ahead and

organize concepts effectively. Mrs. Parliament always goes step-

by-step through each problem, breaking down a complex analysis

into simple terms or statements. At the end of each day, I always

felt like I thoroughly understood the information, and more

importantly, could apply it to real world situations. In addition,

the professional presentations Mrs. Parliament had us complete

On just the second day of school Mr. Mancillas caught a

glimpse of a student dozing off in the corner. He stealthily

proceeded to introduce sampling biases. It was in this moment

that I knew the year to come was going to be special. With his

combination of impeccable humor and unparalleled passion

Some teachers are excellent at connecting with their students.

Some are excellent at connecting with the subject matter.

However, very few can combine those two talents to create

a classroom full of cooperation, trust, and progress like Mr.

Huggins did. From day one, he showed the class both his

personable and intellectual attributes, giving us a reason to both

enjoy him as a person and respect him as an educator.

Furthermore, he is the person who pestered me countless times

When I first entered her classroom three years ago, I was

intrigued by the teaching style of my new teacher. Although

many students and teachers seem to get tired of the repetitive

nature of schooling, Mrs. Drugan has started every day with the

same excitement and enthusiasm that she had on the first day,

no matter the situation. Most people cringe at the thought of

integrals, derivatives, and trigonometry; however, Mrs. Drugan

has shown me the “attractive” nature of particular math

problems and the great satisfaction of simplifying a complex

integral down to an easy, addition problem. Mrs. Drugan, with

her humor and passion, has served to inspire me even when I

advanced past her traditional calculus background to calculus

based physics. Although she claimed she only had a minor in

physics, she was still able to streamline the most complicated

problems to a simple two-step procedure. Thank you, Mrs.

Drugan, for showing me what true passion really looks like,

I’m literally writing this essay in the last two hours I have

because, well, I’m a top 10 student, and we procrastinate. That’s

what AP classes do to us. So many long nights can pile up and

stress out a student. However, I didn’t have that problem. I loved

every single waking minute of high school. I have to thank Mrs.

Wallace for that. Students can relate when I say that English is

forever going to be the bane of my existence. So to have a teacher

who made it so enjoyable with Fun Fridays, hilarious projects,

and so much more, helped me realize that school was not about

grades but about the memories you take with you. Never have I

had a teacher who had such pure, real relationships with students

and that I will forever be grateful. Thank you for everything,

Mrs. Wallace. You are the reason why high school is the best

four years I’ll ever live.

I entered Mr. Hall’s class in sophomore year and have had him

as an art instructor and mentor ever since. Under his direction,

I can see the miles of improvement I have made as both an

artist and a person. He has supported me in my unconventional

dreams, even when I myself have doubted and faltered, and

he pushed me never to settle for anything less than what I’m

passionate for.

I’ll always admire that Mr. Hall continues to smile, joke, and

laugh even under the burden of stress (largely induced by his

procrastinating students – not excluding myself) and I can

honestly say that coming into fifth period every day for the last

three years is what got me through high school with relative

sanity. His classroom is my happy place – surrounded by

creativity and openness, Mr. Hall created for me an environment

where I could feel at home and know that someone was on my

side (even when I was being censored by the feds). Thank you,

Mr. Hall, for showing me what it means to be an artist.

A fundamental concept of biology is that populations, rather

than a single organism, are able to evolve. When I first walked

into Mrs. Moore’s class, I was still a simple high school junior,

hanging on to what was left of my time before college. Mrs.

Moore’s passion for biology helped to solidify my own love for

the subject and with her help, I began paving the road towards

my future in science. As her student, I have learned how to study

life through a new lens, to observe what makes it up, what keeps

it going, and what ultimately tears it back down, only to repeat

the process. Mrs. Moore has taught me to look at the big picture

and ask the big questions, yet to never forget the most important

of details. Thank you for all the experiences and motivation you

have given me, and I hope you can make an exception when I say

that you have helped a single organism evolve into the student he

is today and will continue to be in the future.

Mrs. Bickham is everything a student would want in a teacher

and more. She was my freshman biology teacher and was the

first person to open my eyes up to the realities of high school;

it wasn’t all fun and games as the movies made it out to be. She

taught me the importance of work ethic and good study habits,

and that has made a tremendous impact on my academic

career. Senior year, Mrs. Bickham became my Anatomy and

Physiology teacher and NHS sponsor, and she was every bit

as wonderful as I had remembered her freshman year. She has

proved herself time after time as being one of the most selfless

people I have ever met. After my Medical Microbiology teacher

left halfway through the year, she gave up her only conference

period to fill the vacancy. I knew this was a tough decision for

her because of all the things that she already had to do. But for

me, it was great, as I now get to hear her infectious laughter for

two periods during the day instead of just one.

Fifth period. First day. Freshmen year. Mr. Grueneich, more

commonly referred to as “G”, stood in front of my theatre class

in one of his iconic tropical shirts and proceeded to ask what

acting was. It turns out uncovering that answer would be the

central purpose of his course and wouldn’t be any easy discovery.

G has a knack for leading students into exploration. Under his

instruction, the class explored ideas, problems, characters, and

empathy — all of which are vital tools to the actor. He guided

each student with thoughtful ingenuity, keen perception, and

care. A care he fosters not only for his students’ well-being

but also for feeding their passion in an art some may consider

illogical and fleeting. At the end of the year, G revealed that

acting is doing. Acting is not pretending. Rather it is living life

to the fullest, on or off-stage, by not wondering “what if ” but by

doing. Thank you, G, for those sacred 51 minutes I experienced

every day freshmen year. I hope you can see the lessons stayed

with me.
