As a children’s museum, The Magic House is a strong and enthusiastic advocate for play. We take this activity seriously since it helps kids develop critical physical, social, cognitive and emotional skills, so important for success in school, work and life. Through play, children of all ages and abilities can ignite their imagination, foster collaboration and improve health and wellbeing. But today, children’s free and unstructured playtime is declining due to the demands of homework, extracurricular activities and hours of screen time.

To reduce the disappearance of play in childhood, The Magic House took steps in 2016 to provide plentiful play opportunities of all kinds. From the opening of Kings, Queens & Castles, an introduction to the game of chess, to the permanent installation of Future Play: Art + Technology, a large-scale interactive digital playground designed to promote social collaboration, the Museum focused on exhibits and programs that offered opportunities for everyone to learn and connect through play in a multitude of ways.

To highlight the importance of play, The Magic House partnered with two St. Louis creative firms, Rodgers Townsend and Bruton Stroube Studios, to create a media campaign with a valuable message for adults and kids alike: Remember to play.

Creative PlayCrayon Mural Crayons are among the world’s most popular playthings, usually used for creative expression. But The Magic House found a new use for this artistic medium by commissioning St. Louis Priory student and up-and-coming artist Connor Wright to produce a colorful new addition to the Museum. Using an algorithm he developed, Wright created a pointillist mural of the St. Louis skyline composed of 300,000 crayons in 77 different shades. To complete this enormous project, The Magic House reached out to schools and youth organizations all over the region to put thousands of crayons into boxes that were then joined together to form the stunning mosaic mural. Completed in just two weeks in March, the mosaic is permanently installed outside the Museum’s traveling exhibit gallery. The resulting 240-square-foot mural is a whole work of art that is truly greater than the sum of its parts; it makes a beautiful point about what kids can accomplish when they create and play together.

Creative PlayFuture Play: Art + Technology Children today are immersed in abundant forms of media, from traditional TV to interactive technologies. Research indicates that the typical 8-year-old spends as much as eight hours per day engaged with some type of media. Such heavy use of technology can have negative effects, impacting kids’ learning, sleep, weight and mental health. But with the help of Board member Ron Cameron, The Magic House connected with the Japanese interactive technology firm teamLab Kids, Inc., renowned for combining art, technology and play to bring kids together and tackle the isolation of sedentary screen time. The result was Future Play: Art + Technology, an innovative virtual playground where kids get creative as they design digital cities that they upload onto a room-sized screen; play high-tech hopscotch on a course they create themselves; and compose a sensory orchestra with giant luminescent orbs that change sound and color when they touch. Future Play: Art + Technology made its U.S. debut at The Magic House and was sponsored by Wells Fargo Advisors. Because visitors clamored to go back to the future after this temporary exhibit closed, the Museum decided to play for keeps and make favorite components of the exhibit permanent in a new STEAM gallery. Thanks to Tim and Elizabeth Swank and the William T. Kemper Foundation, there’s no time like the present to enjoy Future Play.

Cardboard Creation Showcase The Magic House challenged kids to think outside the box in September when we presented the Cardboard Creation Showcase in the Museum’s Make-It Workshop. From robots to rockets, kids transformed ordinary cardboard boxes into extraordinary inventions using just recycled materials and their imaginations. The event was inspired by Caine’s Arcade, a film about a boy who built an ingenious arcade out of discarded boxes and everyday objects. The response to Caine’s Arcade was so huge that the filmmakers launched the Global Cardboard Challenge, which has encouraged more than 100,000 kids in 50 countries to create imaginative cardboard contraptions while building creativity and entrepreneurship skills. The Magic House’s visitors joined the movement by participating in the Cardboard Creation Showcase, sponsored by Shillington Box Company.

Camp Make-ItCampers in The Magic House’s new Camp Make-It went full STEAM ahead, using science, technology, engineering, art and math to make the summer magical. The Museum’s camp for 9- to 11-year-olds, Camp Make-It invited budding inventors to create curious contraptions, experiment with a multitude of gadgets and gizmos, enjoy a week of tinkering time, and create to their heart’s content. Camp Make-It was such a hit that it will return for two weeks in the summer of 2017. The Magic House, St. Louis Children’s Museum l 2016 Annual Report 3

Collaborative PlayForts and ClubhousesTake a pile of colorful blankets, a mound of fluffy pillows, assorted pieces of furniture and mix it all up with kids’ imaginations. This time-honored tradition of fort building is a childhood favorite, but one many kids may not experience today. Studies reveal that children today have eight fewer hours of free and open playtime a week than they had 20 years ago. The Magic House helped kids return to a simpler time with Forts and Clubhouses, a summer installation when children put their teamwork, creativity and engineering skills to the test as they transformed a heap of everyday items into the ultimate hideaways. This play experience was made possible by Alberici Constructors.

Kings, Queens & CastlesLearning experts concur that playing chess can enhance logic, spatial reasoning, critical thinking and social skills. In October, The Magic House brought the game of chess to life when we played host to Kings, Queens & Castles, an exhibit co-created with the World Chess Hall of Fame that provides an engaging introduction to chess pieces and game strategy. Designed for children ages 3 to 11, Kings, Queens & Castles features a variety of interactive experiences, from walking across a drawbridge into a medieval castle with a chessboard floor, to becoming a life-sized chess piece, creating your own knight’s shield and even bringing the exhibit experience home with an app that connects to a digital chess game. To mark the exhibit’s opening, The Magic House held a beginners’ tournament in collaboration with the Chess Club & Scholastic Center of Saint Louis and St. Peter Catholic School. Thanks to a grant from the Edward Chase Garvey Memorial Foundation, underserved students were able to make the move to visit Kings, Queens & Castles free of charge before it embarked on a nationwide tour. For those who were unable to experience Kings, Queens & Castles at the Museum, it will return to the area in the summer of 2017, where it will get a royal welcome at the City of St. John community center in North St. Louis County.

THE MAGIC BALL: A ROYAL AFFAIRTo celebrate this unique chess exhibit, The Magic House’s Friends Committee hosted a regal evening fit for a king—and queen. Held at the majestic Peabody Opera House and chaired by Linda Hunter and Aisling Leonard, The Magic Ball: A Royal Affair drew more than 540 guests with festivities including dinner, a live auction and entertainment provided by comedian and St. Louis native Greg Warren. With generous support from presenting sponsor Edward Jones and major sponsors August A. Busch III Charitable Trust, Centene Charitable Foundation, Emerson, Krey Distributing, PARIC, and honorary chairs Brenda and Joe McKee, the event raised more than $400,000 for Access for All, an initiative to ensure that all children, regardless of their circumstances, can learn and play at The Magic House.

Collaborative Play

Great Friend to Kids AwardPlay is always better with a pal. In November, The Magic House got the chance to honor one of our very best friends, Randy Costas, at our annual donor recognition breakfast. A dedicated Museum volunteer for more than 20 years, Randy has served on the Board of Directors, Friends Committee, capital campaign committees, the Endowment Committee and the President’s Council. For her unwavering efforts to provide joyful play experiences for children from underserved areas of St. Louis and around the world, The Magic House presented her with the 2016 Great Friend to Kids Award.

Adult Play Date All work and no play can make grownups a little dull. That’s why The Magic House’s Young Professionals Board hosted two Adult Play Dates at the Museum for those who are young at heart. More than 400 participants enjoyed adult beverages, refreshments and three hours full of fun opportunities to be a kid again, from zipping down the three-story Super Slide to tackling the Jack and the Beanstalk climber. The Young Professionals Board, a group of emerging corporate and nonprofit leaders, raised $40,000 in 2016 through these Adult Play Dates, as well as a Trivia Night to support The Magic House’s mission and to provide free educational programming to children in need through the Access for All initiative.

Active PlayThe Kids Games

Kids went for the gold at an August event of Olympic proportions: The Kids Games. Athletes-in-training ran rings

around The Magic House as they medaled in Olympic-style events including a fun run, a noodle javelin toss, a mini-hurdle jump and more. Competitors worked hard and played even harder as they

decorated their own bib numbers and fueled up on healthy snacks. Thanks to first aid sponsor St. Anthony’s Kirkwood Urgent Care and refreshment sponsor Fresh Thyme Farmer’s Market, everyone was a winner.

Mizzou Training CenterExperts advise that children need at least one hour

of physical activity every day—but only 10 percent of them are getting it. To provide kids with some heart-pumping play, the Museum teamed up with the University of Missouri to remodel a popular fitness exhibit. The new Mizzou Training Center includes activity stations that build the skills all athletes need on the field and on the playground: agility, balance, endurance, flexibility, strength and speed. Suited up in team colors of black and gold, the Mizzou Training Center features a locker room displaying real equipment and official Tiger uniforms. The exhibit was made possible by Dave and Suzie Spence. Spence, a former Magic House Board member and Mizzou alum, played a big role in initiating the partnership with his alma mater.

RecollectionsYou may recall that one of the first exhibits at The Magic House was Recollections. In 2016, this interactive video display was back by popular demand! Installed right next door to the Mizzou Training Center, Recollections invites visitors to dance, move, jump and play in front of a large projection screen. These movements are recorded by a video camera and processed by a computer, transforming them into animated silhouettes surrounded by beautiful colored shadows. At Recollections, ordinary hops, skips and jumps become extraordinary masterpieces of motion.

Play for AllAccess for AllThe Magic House strives to reach all children in our region, and especially those with the fewest resources. This is an especially pressing need, since recent research shows that those children from low-income urban communities have far more limited opportunities for free play. To level the playing field, we provided free field trips, outreach programs, family nights and other learning experiences to more than 85,000 participants in 2016.

Wonder WordsChildren from the YWCA’s Head Start centers got to enjoy the ultimate play on words, thanks to a grant from the PNC Foundation. As part of PNC’s “Grow Up Great” initiative, The Magic House piloted Wonder Words, an early childhood education program aimed at promoting STEM learning and literacy. Head Start students, their parents and teachers had the opportunity to visit Wonder Works, the Museum’s STEM adventure playground, which features key vocabulary and “Wonder Why?” prompts for adults to spark discussions about STEM concepts. The Wonder Words program was designed to combat the “word gap,” the vocabulary deficit that children from low-income communities often experience.

Girls Inc. PartnershipThe Magic House is dedicated to providing meaningful learning and play experiences for all kids. As part of this commitment, The Magic House planned a summerlong play date with Girls Inc., a nonprofit youth organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold. Thanks to a generous grant from longtime Magic House supporter and past Board chair Bob Virgil, with matching funds from the Marion and Henry Bloch Family Foundation, the Museum furthered our partnership with Girls Inc. of St. Louis to provide their summer participants with hands-on educational programming. The Magic House offered a free, six-week program at the organization’s North St. Louis County facility that included a fun introduction to binary code, as well as programs on health, nutrition and yoga. In addition, the group participated in free field trips and family nights at The Magic House.

A Grand Adventure Under the SeaThere’s no better place to play than the beach, and The Magic House

created a “sandsational” new exhibit with the return of Sandcastle Beach in the summer of 2016. This popular outdoor installation featured a beachfront park with a 75-ton, ocean-inspired sandcastle as its centerpiece. To ensure that

all children have the chance to feel the sand between their toes, the Museum’s Grand Committee hosted A Grand Adventure Under the Sea. This very special June event held on the shores of Sandcastle Beach made a splash with

grandparents, grandchildren and grand friends. Chaired by Grand Committee members Margy Reim and Evie Stockell, this seaworthy evening raised $20,000 for the Grandparent Scholarship Fund, which provides free field trips and outreach programs for children in need.

Play for All

Title 1 Field TripsChildren love to play superhero and in 2016 we had a superhero in Carr Lane Manufacturing Company. The Magic House has made a commitment to providing Title 1 schools in our region with free field trips. When The Magic House lost funding for this program, Carr Lane Manufacturing Company saved the day! The company’s generous contribution enabled more than 8,400 students and accompanying parents from Title 1 schools to visit the Museum free of charge and participate in curriculum-enriching, guided field trip programs during the 2016-2017 school year.
