Waukee Railroad Pergola – In the Shadow of the Rails

The Waukee Trailhead Public Art Project is the lead project of a regional vision plan to enhance and realize the recreational, health, cultural and economic potential of the Raccoon River Valley Trail system. The plan creates a unique and unifying public art theme for the Trail through the installation of significant and culturally relevant public art structures and spaces, sponsored by the communities located along the trail corridor. Waukee is the first trail community to advance this regional initiative with construction of an iconic

public art installation at the City’s trailhead. The project site has been strategically selected as the largest public gateway to the Trail, providing access to both the western and northern routes of the 89-mile system. The project is integrated with the Waukee and greater Des Moines regional trail systems, offering additional unique recreational and cultural opportunities to serve this rapidly growing urban area. Fundraising for this Art Project continues with a ground-breaking construction goal during the summer of 2016.
