ON THE COVERMeet the Terranovas

We had a great time chatting with this fantastic new JCC family and had the opportunity to ask them some really fun questions about spring, vacations and superheroes. Amanda and Adam have two children in our KJCC preschool and are already signed up for Camp Kef this summer. The Terranovas enjoy spending time together at local neighborhood festivals and the Jersey Shore. They are excited to spend many years with the JCC….swimming this summer, playing and learning.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Spring?A: Definitely the first warm day! When we can take the kids outside and let them run around the park!Q: What is your dream vacation?A: Disney would be the perfect place to take the kids because they're at a great age to do so! We also can't wait until the kids are old enough to pack up and go on a road trip across the country. Q: What is your favorite superhero?A: Superman and Cyborg!Q: Final very important and serious question…what is your favorite animal?A: We love all kinds of animals, but "stuffed" animals are at the top of the list at the moment.

If you see the Terranovas around the J, please say hi and welcome them to our J Family.

(If you have a family you would like to see featured in our next program guide, email [email protected])

Executive Letter

Message from Executive Director, Beth Segal

Dear Friends,

The Kaiserman JCC Board of Directors and Staff have been busy as bees this winter planning amazing events to engage the entire community this spring and summer. There are activities to get involved with and participate in for everyone. Here is my "Top 10".

SUPPORT, VOLUNTEER, AND ATTEND!

Mid Atlantic Junior Maccabi Games; Sunday, May 3. Over 700 Jewish teens from PA, DE, NJ, NY and MD will be here for a grand Opening Ceremony and an all day sporting competition.

Community Craft Fair; April 16. Over 50 crafters will sell their wares. Enjoy free champagne; goodie bags and shop-til-you drop.

Beyond the Seder Plate; March 23. Learn about Passover and create your own traditions.

Texas Hold ‘em Poker Tournament; Sunday, June 7. Test your poker playing skill with professional dealers, food and drink. Grand prize will be a $1000 Visa Gift Card and other great prizes for finishing in the top tier.

BINGO!; May 19th. What a great night out. Designer Bag BINGO is back and the handbags will be better than ever. Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Coach and more!

Circus Camp is back; August 9-14. Kids ages 6+ are the stars under the Big Top in the JCC gymnasium. Trainers from around the world, work magic in one amazing week with our kids. The performance is not to be missed.

Bonus week of Camp; August 17-21. Camp Kef and Stepping Stones are teaming up for a bonus week of camp due to the lateness of the Labor Day holiday. Don’t worry about what to do with the kids before school.

J-Days; When school is out, or dismisses early, kids have a blast at J-Days both in the Robert J Wilf Preschool and our KidsTime after-school programs.

Fabulous Fitness; Personal training specials, TRX, Boot Camp, Tai Chi, Spin, Yoga, friendly staff and a family atmosphere.

And we saved the best for last...

Swim Club at the J; Enjoy our two amazing outdoor pools, lounge chairs, pool toys, playground and Sunday Kids Activity Time! What a great way to spend family time outside at the Swim Club. Weekday activities include: Zumba classes, $1 hot dogs, Mah Jong and pop-up parties.

I hope to see YOU at the J where we have something for everyone. You belong here, there’s something about this place!

Warm regards,Beth Segal [email protected]

Support the athletesThe words below were spoken by a local Jewish athlete that benefited from participating in the JCC Maccabi Games©. The Games provide Jewish youth with a supportive environment that fosters mutual respect and sportsmanship as well as helping to cultivate an appreciation of Jewish values and culture. Teens will enrich their Jewish identity and help those who are less fortunate through community service projects; and, become better athletes, better people and better Jews. Some athletes are unable to make the financial commitment to attend these Games. Please consider supporting the Team Philly Athlete Scholarship Fund and help create memories for a local Jewish athlete.

There's Something About this Place

When you walk through the doors of the J you might see a preschool class making their way to our gym for play time; a group of members gathered around Nana's Café in the lobby chatting with Gladys, or you might hear a couple of senior adults bidding each other “Shabbat Shalom” before parting ways on a Friday afternoon. You can set your watch to the arrival of the basketball guys who come to play a quick game of pick-up during their lunch break each day. Soon after stepping through our doors you'll be on a first name basis with our staff and come to realize the JCC feels a lot like home.

The J is the heart of the community and we strive to transcend all differences and provide programs for everyone. We are an independent non-profit organization and, in spite of the revenue we receive from membership fees, tuition and program fees, it is not enough to cover the cost of operating our center. We rely on the generosity of businesses, grant making organizations and individuals like you to help reach our goals each year. We strive to make our programs accessible to everyone and provide over $100,000 each year in need-based financial assistance to families in our community.

Make Your Tax Dollars Do GoodInvest in a child's futurePA Education Tax Credit Program

The Foundation for Jewish Day Schools was created by the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia in partnership with six local day schools, and is an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Foundation

provides need-based scholarships to students from lower and middle-income families attending the six day schools and dozens of pre-schools in the Greater Philadelphia area, including the Kaiserman JCC’s Robert J. Wilf Preschool & Kindergarten.

What is the EITC Program?Corporations (both “C” and “S”) can significantly reduce their PA state tax liability by receiving tax credits for donations to state-approved scholarship organizations such as the Foundation for Jewish Day Schools of Greater Philadelphia. Owners of sub-chapter S corporations and other small and medium-sized businesses that pay personal income tax on PA business income can fully participate in the program as well.

Participants in the EITC program may receive a tax credit equal to 100% of the first $10,000 contributed and up to 90% of the remaining amount contributed up to a maximum credit of $150,000 annually.

If a corporation or business owner

chooses to designate its donation for

scholarship assistance to the Robert J.

Wilf Preschool & Kindergarten, it can do

so in the letter that will accompany its

check to the Foundation for Jewish Day

Schools of Greater Philadelphia.

Because of its deep roots in Jewish tradition, the word Sheva, seven, was chosen as the name of our early childhood education initiative. The seven core elements of Sheva are firmly rooted in the latest research in child development.

Jewish Learning InstituteDecoding the Bible: The Development Of Jewish Law And Tradition Through The Ages

From commandments engraved in stone to microchips in our eyewear and self-driving cars—a lot can change in 3,000 years. Yet the elemental questions about our tradition remain

the same. Do we have any evidence that the Bible’s text is divine and true? Who has the right to interpret the Bible? And how do we adapt its laws to modern times and changing influences? The answers to these questions are addressed in Decoding the Bible.

Recreational Programs*This program is specially designed to accommodate children in a friendly and non-competitive environment. Our classes provide the opportunity for kids to gain fundamental motor skill development while having lots of fun. Our instructors provide an engaging, positive, and encouraging experience so kids feel special and proud of each new accomplishment while learning the basics of gymnastics. Children can enter our program when they are three years old and potty-trained. Read the class descriptions to choose the appropriate age group. Do not hesitate to call Valencia at 610-896-7770 x 106 with any questions.

Please see next page for Dates, times & Prices of classes listed here

Tiny Tumblers (Age 3 - Pre-K)This is a specifically designed preschool gymnastics program for boys and girls. Students are introduced to fun-filled, creative circuits and activities, which help develop motor skills, listening ability, and coordination. Children will be divided into groups based on age and ability & must be potty-trained to begin this class.

KinderKids (Kindergarten)Children learn progressive skills in gymnastics. Boys and girls are taught basic gymnastics skills that increase balance, strength & flexibility. Your child can experience the satisfaction that comes from mastering a new skill.

Tumbleweeds (Girls Grades 1 & 2)The skill progression in this class is comparable to Kinderkids. Your child will experience an increase in coordination, muscle development & social skills.

Round Off Rockets ( Girls Grades 3 - 4)Girls are taught the fundamentals of gymnastics and may be introduced to more advanced skills depending upon the students’ abilities and proficiency of the basics.

Aerials (Girls Grades 5 & Up)This class is designed for girls grades 5 and up. Extra class time allows for more intense work in skill development as well as strength and flexibility.

Gymnastics is a comprehensive sport that develops key physical and social skills such as balance, flexibility, coordination, spatial orientation, speed, strength, perseverance, confidence, patience, and self esteem.

Gymnastics Team ProgramOur Team Program is designed to prepare gymnasts for USAG competitions. Gymnasts first learn the necessary skills - dance and acrobatics - on the pre-competitive levels. Building on these skills they then learn the competitive routines they will perform at meets with gymnasts from other teams in the region. Within the framework of positive reinforcement and encouragement, our coaches provide an opportunity for gymnasts to grow in skill level and confidence, creating a positive experience that will add to their physical and social development. Extended hours offer team members time for additional practice on gymnastics skills. Time is also spent on strength conditioning, endurance, and flexibility. Participation on a team is by invitation or scheduled tryout with our Gymnastics Director, Valencia Chang.

Spring 2014 Class Schedule

holiday celebrationsShabbat: The Jewish day of rest begins at sundown on Friday evening and ends at twilight on Saturday evening. It is a time to enjoy spiritual contemplation, the company of family members, nature and relaxation. It is an opportunity to feel renewed and ready for the coming week.

Rosh Hashanah: The Jewish New Year begins the 10-day period known as the High Holidays, the Days of Awe. We use this time to think about the past year and resolve to improve what needs improvement in the coming year. The blowing of the shofar (ram’s horn) serves as a wake-up call to begin the process.

Yom Kippur: The Day of Atonement occurs on the 10th (last) day of the High Holidays. It is a day of fasting, prayer, inner contemplation and a collective confession of sins. It is also a day of optimism, full of the promise of forgiveness and improvement of our behavior in the coming year.

Sukkot: Preparations for Sukkot begin right after Yom Kippur with the building of the sukkah, a temporary dwelling. This harvest holiday emphasizes the values of hospitality, the rewards of work and our trust in G-d. It reminds us of the period of time the Jews wandered in the desert after leaving Egypt.

Shemini Atzeret: The eighth day of Sukkot, a day of solemn assembly, is a holiday on which prayers for rain are recited. A memorial service is also held.

Simchat Torah: Simchat Torah is associated with Sukkot, but is an independent, joyous holiday. On Simchat Torah, the cycle of reading from the Torah ends and begins again. In every synagogue, the Torah scrolls are taken out and carried around in processions.

Hanukkah: Hanukkah, meaning “dedication” in Hebrew, is the joyous eight-day celebration during which the Jews commemorate the victory of the Macabees over the armies of Syria in 165 BCE and the miracle of the Temple’s oil lasting 8 days. Today, the celebration of Hanukah includes eating potato latkes and jelly doughnuts, playing Dreidel, and centers on the lighting of the Hanukiah.

Purim: Purim is one of the most joyous and fun holidays on the Jewish calendar. It commemorates a time when the Jewish people, living in Persia, were saved from the wicked tyrant Haman by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordecai, as told in the Book of Esther (Megillat Esther). Purim merriments include carnivals, costumes, gifts of food and reading the story in the synagogue.

Passover: Passover, or Pesach in Hebrew, is an eight-day spring holiday that celebrates the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt. The main tradition of Passover is the Seder, the word Seder means, “order” and this ritual meal is carefully choreographed and held on the first two evenings of the holiday (in Israel, and for most Reform Jews, there’s only one seder, on the first night). The Seder is designed to provide an opportunity for telling the story of how the Jewish People were freed from slavery and given the gift of the Torah. Jewish law prohibits eating anything that is leavened (hametz) during the Passover holiday

Shavuot: Shavuot, which means the “Festival of Weeks” occurs seven weeks after Passover. It is a three-fold celebration that commemorates the receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, the harvesting of wheat in the land of Israel, and the ripening of the first fruits in Jerusalem. On Shavuot the slaves who left Egypt were made into free people by the receiving of the Ten Commandments.

Please Note: The Kaiserman JCC follows the Lower Merion School District Calendar for weather related closings. When LMSD closes due to weather, the JCC after-school classes are also closed.
