Carla Criste will enter her 25th season as Navy’s head women’s track and field coach in 2015-16. Criste is one of the Academy’s most successful and consistent coaches.

Under Criste’s guidance, Navy has defeated Army in eight straight indoor/outdoor Star Meets, a dominance that included seven straight indoor Star Meet victories. Overall, Criste is 30-17-1 against Army and is an impressive 17-3 against the Black Knights in the last 10 years.

Criste has led Navy to an outstanding dual-scored meet record of 376-54-1 (.860) during her tenure and the team has posted a 152-3 (.978) record and five undefeated seasons since the beginning of the 2005-06 season.

In addition to its regular season successes, Navy has also stepped up at the postseason championship level, claiming five Patriot League titles since 2001 and posting five top-20 efforts at the ECAC Championship over the last ten seasons.

In 2011-12, Navy swept Army in the indoor and outdoor Star Meet for the fourth straight year, won the 2012 Patriot League Outdoor Championship and Jess Palacio earned Navy’s first Division I Indoor Track and Field All-America accolade after placing 16th in the mile at the NCAA Championship.

Criste earned her fifth career Patriot League Coach of the Year award after leading Navy to the league outdoor title. The Mids rallied from a fifth-place standing on the final day of competition to win the team title, taking four individual titles and eight runner-up finishes to place 23 points ahead of second-place Bucknell. Navy was also the runner-up at the Patriot League Indoor Championship.

In addition to Palacio competing at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship, the Mids sent three athletes to the NCAA’s East Regional Outdoor Championship. Navy also had five ECAC All-East performers (two indoor and three outdoor).

In 2010-11, Criste led Navy to the indoor Patriot League Championship in 2010-11 and was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year. Navy also swept the indoor/outdoor Star Meet series with Army for the third straight season. Navy blew away Army, 129-73, at the outdoor Star Meet for its largest margin of victory ever over its rival.

The Midshipmen would post their second-straight undefeated year in 2009-10. The indoor team was 10-0 in

dual-scored meets and the outdoor team was 3-0. It was also the second straight year that the women’s track team won both the indoor and outdoor N-Star meets and the ninth sweep overall. Criste also earned her second straight Patriot League Indoor Coach of the Year award.

At the helm in 2008-09, Criste guided the Mids to one of their most memorable seasons in program history. After being picked to finish fourth in the Patriot League’s preseason poll, Navy rode its distance corps and a spirited underclassmen group to the program’s second indoor track championship. For her efforts, Criste was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time in her career.

In 2007, Navy recorded a ninth-place team score at the ECAC Championship during the outdoor slate, its highest finish since moving up to the Division I ranks in 1991-92. In that same outdoor season, the Mids also scored at the NCAA East Region Championship for the first time since the regional was added in 2003.

In addition to her team’s performance on the track, Criste’s student-athletes have also done their part in the classroom. Navy produced both the Patriot League’s Indoor and Outdoor Track Scholar-Athletes of the Year in three-consecutive years, with distance standout Erica Ziel claiming the honor during both the winter and spring slates during the 2008-09 season.

Before Ziel, it was Vicki Moore, the Class of 2008 Valedictorian with a perfect 4.00 GPA, who was named the conference’s top track student-athlete in 2007-08. The year prior, Kirsten Andrews (‘07) became the first Navy women’s track & field member to be selected Patriot League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for all sports. Andrews would graduate as one of the Academy’s most decorated student-athletes, having twice earned Academic All-America honors during her decorated career.

Criste’s track & field team was awarded the Naval Academy Athletic Director’s Cup for being the most successful all-around team for the 2007-08 athletic season.

Criste came to the Academy in 1991 after spending three years as an assistant with the women’s program at George Mason, where she oversaw the jumps, sprints, hurdles and multi-events. There, five athletes earned All-America status and two became NCAA champions under her tutelage. The Patriots also captured the ECAC Division I Championship in each of her three seasons.

Criste has also been recognized on the national scene. She was selected as the field events coach for the 1993

U.S. Olympic Festival and coached the East team to victory, marking the East’s first-win in the history of the festival. In 1999, Criste was named head coach for that year’s Pan Am Games in Winnipeg, Canada.

She also served as head coach of the 1995 U.S. National Track & Field Team, which consisted of men’s and women’s junior and senior teams that came together for a series of meets against Canada. Criste guided the U.S. team to wins in all four meets.

A standout performer in her own right, Criste was a four-year letterwinner in track at Penn State, serving as captain of the Nittany Lion women’s squad in 1985-86. She was an NCAA qualifier in the triple jump and was a national qualifier and ECAC record holder in both the pentathlon and heptathlon.

After graduating from Penn State with a degree in nutritional science in 1986, she went on to earn her master’s degree in exercise physiology from West Virginia in 1988. While at West Virginia, Criste served as an assistant track & field coach, handling the Mountaineers’ jumps, sprints, hurdles and multi-events.

After concluding her own collegiate career, Criste continued competing at the national level. For three years (1986-89) she competed at the U.S. Olympic Festival and was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1986-91. She was nationally ranked in both the triple jump and multi-events, representing the United States in several international team competitions.

The daughter of Joan and Dave Criste (USNA `60), Criste also serves as an Assistant Athletic Director and professor at the Academy.

Karen Boyle, who also serves as the head coach of the Navy women’s cross country squad, enters her 29th year as an assistant track coach in 2015-16.

Navy has had a very successful distance team

under Boyle’s watch, highlighted by Marty Shue’s title in the indoor 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Division II Championship in 1991. Boyle has also coached two Division I All-Americans.

Boyle coached Kim McGreevey to All-America honors in 1995 in the 3,000-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship. In 2012, Boyle coached Jess Palacio to All-America honors in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship.

Boyle helped mold Palacio into the greatest distance runner in Navy history. Palacio, a 2012 graduate, was a three-time NCAA East Regional Qualifier in addition to her All-America accolade. She was a four-time Patriot League Championship Track-Athlete of the Meet and won 11 Patriot League track and field titles. Palacio left Navy with eight school records.

Boyle has also stressed a focus on academics during her time at Navy. In 2012 Brigid Byrne earned Academic All-America honors and the Navy distance runners routinely appear on the Patriot League Honor Roll in large numbers.

Boyle has also enjoyed much success as Navy’s cross country coach, guiding her teams to a 124-21 (.855) mark over her career.

During Boyle’s tenure, seven Navy cross country runners have competed at the NCAA Division I Championship. Boyle’s first national championship qualifier came in 1992 with Kerry O’Neill, followed by Jackie Hayes in 1995, Rebecca Cline in 1997, Melissa Foon in 2000, Amy Watson in 2008, Jess Palacio in 2011 and most recently Annie-Norah Beveridge in 2012. Boyle led the cross country team to the 2012 Patriot League Championship, her fourth since 2007 and the second in a row. Boyle has been named the Patriot League Cross Country Coach of the Year four times.

Boyle has led the Mids to significant honors on both the Division II (1987-1990) and Division I (1991-present) levels. In Navy’s last-four years of Division II competition, Boyle coached the cross country team to three-straight undefeated seasons and four-consecutive top-five finishes in the NCAA Division II Championship, with five runners garnering All-America honors.

Boyle was named Eastern Region Coach of the Year in three-straight seasons (1988-90).

Boyle guided the program into the Division I ranks in 1991, and the Mids immediately achieved success by capturing the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship in cross country. In 1997 and 2007, Boyle was named Navy’s Fall Coach of the Year after she led Navy to an undefeated season. In 2007 and again in ‘08, she was recognized as the Patriot League Coach of the Year.

In 1995, Boyle was selected as team leader for the USA Ekiden International Marathon in Beijing, China. She was also selected to help rewrite the level I track & field certification curriculum at the USA Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. In 1999, she received her C.S.C.S. certification as a nationally accredited certified strength and conditioning specialist. The summer of 2001 saw Boyle serve as an assistant track & field coach for Team USA in the Deaf Track & Field World Games, held in Rome, Italy.

Boyle, a 1979 graduate of Bowling Green, received her degree in physical education and earned her master’s degree in athletic administration and recreation from her alma mater in 1982. Athletically, she competed in both track and lacrosse, specializing in the 400 and 4x400-meter relay on the track and was a leading scorer for the Falcons’ lacrosse squad.

Her coaching career began at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, where she coached the women’s cross country and track & field teams from 1984-86, developing two national champions and nine All-Americans. Boyle is a tenured professor in the Naval Academy’s Physical Education Department, teaching personal conditioning, rock climbing, kayaking and triathlon training. Boyle also participates in road races and triathlons.

Administratively, Boyle served as the president of the NCAA Division I Women’s Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association (1999-2001), as well as a committee member on the USA Track & Field Coaching Education Board and the United States Track Coaches Association Long Distance Advisory Board.

Steven Sarigiannis begins his ninth year as an assistant coach at Navy in 2015-16, where his focus centers on the throwing and pole vault events.

During his tenure at Navy, Sarigiannis has had throwers

qualify nine times for the NCAA’s East Regional, including three athletes in three different events in 2011 and two repeat quali-fiers in 2012.

In 2012, Sarigiannis helped Alix Membreno place 29th at the NCAA’s East Regional in the javelin after earning ECAC All-East honors and Lauren Allam qualified for the regional in the discus for the second straight year. During the 2011-12 season, Navy throwers also won one Patriot League individual title with four runner-up finishes at the indoor and outdoor championship meets.

During the 2011 outdoor track season the throws squad won three of four Patriot League throwing event titles by win-ning the shot put, discus, hammer and placing second in the javelin. Freshman Lauren Allam won the Patriot League title in the discus, smashing the conference record by seven feet and earning the rookie of the meet award. Junior Amanda Phelps was a double winner in the shot put and hammer throw, which earned her the Patriot League Field-Athlete of the Meet award. Both Amanda Phelps and Lauren Allam, along with freshman javelin thrower Alix Membreno qualified for the 2011 NCAA East Regional Championships.

In addition, his work with the pole vaulters has paid immedi-ate dividends. Under his guidance, Jacqui Charnigo met an NCAA provisional mark, captured a pair of Patriot League titles and earned All-East recognition three times.

Sarigiannis came to the Academy in 2006 after serving as an assistant men’s & women track and cross country coach at Robert Morris University from 2001-06. During his tenure with the Colonials, he was primarily responsible for coaching the throwers and distance runners while assisting with the cross country. He was also responsible for the fall training of the sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers, and spearheaded the recruit-ment of all track & field athletes. Sarigiannis’ athletes broke over 100 school records with 23 NCAA qualifiers, 28 confer-ence Champions, four of which hold conference records and 94 ECAC/IC4A qualifiers. In 2005 the Colonial lady throwing squad scored 74 points at the conference championship in just four

throwing events to give their team two-thirds of its total team points.

In addition to his responsibilities with the track and cross country teams, Sarigiannis was the head strength coach from 2001-05, where he designed and oversaw the weight training programs for 12 varsity teams.

Prior to his time at Robert Morris, Sarigiannis worked as a graduate assistant with the men’s track & field team at Ball State from 2000-01. While earning his master’s degree in Health Science in July 2001, he coached and recruited the throwing events. In his short time with the cardinals he coached three MAC champions and in 2001, he coached Zach Riley to NCAA All-American honors in the hammer throw.

During his coaching career, Sarigiannis has guided three Olympic Trial qualifiers, three NCAA Division I All-Americans, 32 NCAA qualifiers, seven USATF national Qualifiers and two Senior Olympic qualifiers.

Sarigiannis also coaches post-collegiate shot putter Tyler Blatchley who has finished as high 7th at the USA National Championships.

The product of Cicero, N.Y., Sarigiannis was a four-year letter winner at UNC-Wilmington, where he majored in physical edu-cation and graduated in December 1999 with honors. He was a three-time All-East and Colonial Athletic Association champion in the discus throw, earning MVP honors during his senior year. Sarigiannis was part of the first three UNCW Colonial Athletic Conference championship teams including their first team title in school history where they defeated the 1996 indoor NCAA Champions George Mason University. The two-time academic all-league thrower also served as the school’s student represen-tative at the NCAA Leadership Conference in 1999.

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League will celebrate its 25th Anniversary as an all-sport conference during the 2015-16 season.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had 92 percent of its teams score above the national APR average in the most recent data, and 101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2014-15 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following:

H 101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with 88 of those squads earning perfect scores.

H The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in Public Recognition Awards, while Bucknell, Lafayette and Colgate all placed in the top six nationally.

H 92 percent of Patriot League teams scored above the national average in APR, while more than 70 percent had at least a 990 score in the multi-year rate.

H Eleven student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition, including first-team accolades for Navy’s Tom Buffone (Track and Field) and Ellen Bradford (Swimming and Diving), American’s Jen Dumiak (Women’s Basketball) and Fordham’s Brett Biestek (Football).

H Navy’s Tom Buffone (Track and Field) and Loren Generi (Women’s Lacrosse) and Lafayette’s Cory Spera (Baseball) earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

H Buffone and Dumiak were named the Corvias Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees, respectively.

H Thirty-four student-athletes received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition.

H There were 2,745 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2014-15, including 217 with a semester GPA of at least 4.0.

H Bucknell’s Ryan Frazier (Men’s Basketball) and Andrea Siefert (Women’s Rowing) each received the Patriot League Award of Outstanding Leadership and Character, while Lehigh’s Ashley Blanks (Women’s Soccer) was named the League’s Sportsmanship Award winner.

H Four Patriot Leaguers were named Senior CLASS Award finalists, with Colgate’s Caroline Brawner (Women’s Soccer) and Army West Point’s Sam Somers (Men’s Lacrosse) earning first-team recognition.

H Brawner was also one of the League’s nominations for the NCAA Woman of the Year award along with Boston University’s Valentina Cerda Eimbcke (Field Hockey).

H Navy won the Corvias Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the third time in the last four years.

H The Mids also won the men’s title while Boston University repeated as women’s champion.

H Loyola won a pair of NCAA Tournament games to become the first Patriot League women’s lacrosse team to advance to the quarterfinal round, and also finished in the top 10 of the IWLCA Coaches Poll.

H Twenty-four Patriot Leaguers were named All-Americans in team sports, includding Navy’s Joseph Greenspan as a first-team selection in men’s soccer.

H Four Patriot Leaguers competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, and Lehigh’s Elizabeth Weiler became the League’s first female All-American since 2005.

H Lehigh’s Ryan Mahalsky became the first Patriot Leaguer since 2007-08 and sixth all-time to compete at the NCAA Championships for both cross country and outdoor track and field in the same season.

H Bucknell’s Emma Levendoski competed in both the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship.

H A League record nine student-athletes were selected in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft entering the 2015 season, with Army West Point’s John Glesener, Loyola’s Nikko Pontrello and Colgate’s Ryan Walsh among the top 11 picks.

H Navy’s Joseph Greenspan and Boston University’s Dominique Badji were both selected in the first four rounds of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Draft.

H Five Patriot Leaguers were taken in the Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft, with Lehigh’s Justin Pacchioli and Navy’s Stephen Moore each selected in the 10th round.

Built facing the scenic Severn River in 2008, the Wesley A. Brown Field House is a 140,000-square-foot multi-function athletic facility that has served as the home for the Naval Academy’s men’s track & field program.

The facility boasts a unique combination of a 76,000-square-foot retractable Magic Carpet Astroturf system and a Mondo track surface with hydraulically controlled banked curves. The 200-meter hydraulic banked track is one of only four of its kind in the United States. It also features dual pole vault/jumping runways and throwing areas.

State-of-the-art weight training and sports medicine facilities, as well as equipment storage areas round out this newest crown jewel to the Navy athletics arsenal.

The facility is named for the late Lieutenant Commander Wesley A. Brown, CEC, USN, (Ret.), the first African American to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy.

Brown was born April 3, 1927 in Baltimore, Md. He graduated from Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., where he was Cadet Corps Regimental Commander during his senior year.

Nominated for admission by New York Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Brown entered the Academy in 1945 and graduated in June of 1949. Lt. Cmdr. Brown, a veteran of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retired in June 1969 after serving 20 years in the Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps. He holds the Navy Commendation Medal, World War II and Korean War Victory, Korean Service, and American Theater and Antarctic Service Ribbons.

Brown passed away in 2012.

The all-weather MONDO track located northeast of Michelson Hall and Chauvenet Hall is the site of Navy’s outdoor track and field meets.

Considered to be one of the premier facilities in the United States, it is named in honor of Vice Admiral Jonas H. Ingram, who commanded the U.S. South Atlantic Fleet during World War II. He was also the Naval Academy Director of Athletics from 1925-1930.

The track underwent a $1.7 million renovation in the fall of 2001, with new all-weather surfacing placed on the quarter-mile oval and jump areas.

The field area boasts six shot put circles, a discus-throwing circle and a javelin throwing area in the middle of the track. The field has four long/triple jump pits and a “D” zone that allows two high jump areas to be used concurrently.

The facility is also equipped with lights and Navy regularly holds ‘twilight’ meets at the facility. Additionally, the facility also features a Daktronics scoreboard, which displays current times and marks during meets.
