SPIG HistorySPIG (Società per Impianti Generali) was founded in 1936
by Engg. Fernando Bonati and Agar Sorbatti to design,
build and commission cooling systems and cooling towers.
SPIG became part of the United Dominion Industries in
1996. the following year the Company moved from Milan
to actual headquarter in Arona on Lake Maggiore.
In 2003 the 3rd generation of the Company’s founders,
Eng.Jurek and Dott.Ferdy Mosiewicz, bought the SPIG
brand and related Goodwill back from SPX.
In 2010 p.e. found AMBIENTA entered in SPIG Company
with 30% share to support international growth.
July 2016 Babcock & Wilcox USA Company acquired SPIG,
named later B&W-SPIG.
Head-quarter is located in Arona (Italy). Over the years the
company’s business has evolved considerably, making SPIG
one of the leading worldwide providers of Cooling Towers,
Air Cooled Condensers, Airf-in coolers and associated
Services.

B&W-SPIG Cooling Test FacilityIn B&W-SPIG research enter in Voghera (at DECSA facility) R&D engineers conduct thermal
performance tests on splash and film filling and drift eliminators tests.
The Facility is designed for Cooling Towers testing and analysis and offer the capability of
simulating a wide range of conditions to match all the possible actual applications within the
most advanced in the industry. Data collected during tests in Voghera are cross-checked with
relevant field performance tests and later filled-in Thermal software to design CTs
periodically implemented.
Tests on Ecoject S/L and New Static spray nozzles to evaluate proper water distribution and
effluent coefficients are performed in Paruzzaro Lab.s.

High attention is payed to the water distribution, enhanced by SPIG EcoJet® patented
Nozzles, for an optimum uniform and efficient distribution verified in 8 transversal
sections. Main relevant data of B&W-SPIG Test chamber are the following:
• Max filling volume to be tested 4,28m3 // 2,4m height
• Circulating water: 8,0 60m3/h
• Heat load 500kW
• Max Air flow 11m3/s
• Fan VFD controlled power 45kW
• Rain density range: 3m3/h/m2 30m3/h/m2
• Filling air velocity range: 1m/s 5m/s
• Total instruments installed >75
• All data collected can be real time visualised locally or remoted in HQ

Technology Development & BWRCMajor areas of concentration:
Significant research efforts focus upon areas of central importance to B&W-PGG and steam power generation. Partners in these programs have grown to include US Dept. of Energy, US Dept. of Defense, US Environmental Protection Agency, public and private research institutes, state governments and electric utilities. Research activities support B&W PGG’s business strategy and are organized into three technical areas:
1) Energy conversion, including fuel and combustion
• Combustion Kinetics
• Oxy-coal combustion
• In-furnace nitrogen oxides (NOx) control
• Process modeling and evaluation
• Laser diagnostic
2) Materials and manufacturing methods
• Welding technologies
• Corrosion resistance
• Nuclear applications
3) Environmental protection and emissions reduction
• NOx , Sulfur dioxide (SO2), Sulfur trioxide (SO3),
• Particulates and air toxics such as mercury,
• Carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases.
