Welcome to the 2017 Illinois Water Polo All State and Hall of Fame Awards Banquet. It’s been another great season. Tonight is our opportunity to honor the athletes, coaches, and Hall of Fame inductees as they take their place in history as being the “Best of the Best.” Congratulations on a tremendous season to all our award winners as we prepare to recognize them this evening.

I am very excited for this summer as we have many camps being held here in Illinois along with several leagues for high school boys, high school girls, 14&Under, 12&Under, and even 10&under teams. Though the spring high school season is the crown jewel of water polo in Illinois, there’s going to be a lot of water polo played this summer! I want to congratulation the Warren Township High School boys’ team and girls’ teams on completing their first IHSA seasons. I would also like to take a moment to do a quick round of thanks to the following individuals for their efforts with Illinois Water Polo in putting all the details of this event together along with all the other things they do to keep water polo moving forward in Illinois. A very special thank you to Tom Musch for compiling the Slide Presentation for our event tonight and hosting the Illinois Water Polo picture website. Special thanks to our officers, Beto Garcia (Vice-President), Elizabeth Timmons (Secretary), Ron Biamonte (Treasurer). Committee representatives are: Perry Korbakis (Referees), Lynn Castro (Communications and Masters), Jeff Wimer, Nancy O’Brien-Kane, Pat Bauer, and Rich Norman (Hall of Fame), Garrin Kapecki (Masters and Scholarship), Chris Cloy (Player Recognition), Jesse Zien (Website), and Sally Stelnicki and Carol Macola (Banquet and Awards). Our Liaisons are Beto Garcia (Chicago Park District Liaison) and Tim Daniel (USWP Liaison). Running our leagues are Rob Lindgren (Summer League) and American Water Polo (Fall & Winter Leagues). Enjoy the event this evening, and I hope to see you in a pool sometime soon!

Jane CaliendoWater Polo Achievements

Nominated by Chris Cloy and Kendra Will.

Jane’s accomplishments as a Water Polo Coach since Water Polo became an IHSA Sport at Sandburg High School….• 1 Sectional Title• 1 State Quarterfinal Appearance• 9 Sectional Final Appearances• 13 straight Sectional Semifinal Appearances• 57+ All-Sectional Athletes• 21 All-State Athletes

ATHLETEJane was an athlete at Sandburg High School. She was an outstanding swimmer for Sandburg making many state appearances. She held the school record for the 50 free for 30 years at Sandburg. On top of being a four-year varsity swimmer, Jane was also a four-year varsity track athlete, and a 3-year varsity basketball player. She earned 11 varsity letters as a Sandburg athlete, which is unmatched today. From people who knew her as a teammate, they describe Jane as a friendly, highly motivated, and competitive person. Jane always had a smile on her face and a drive to win. She was passionate about her sports and her success was led by that passion. Jane went on to swim at Univeristy of Illinois.

COACH Many current coaches in the Chicagoland area have been impacted in a positive way by Jane Caliendo. Her desire and drive to have her team succeed was evident as her team consistently improved year after year. Sandburg’s sectional final appearances alone prove what a great coach Jane was. Many of us played for the very first water polo teams at Sandburg. Jane took swimmers and taught us a new sport to love. Jane always provided tough love. She worked us hard, but in doing so made us great. She never let us settle for being nothing but our best. Jane wanted to transform her athletes into strong individuals with a great character. Her legacy lives on as many of us who once swam or played for her at Sandburg are now coaching our own teams. As a fellow coach, Jane provided beneficial advice on how to handle being on the coaching end of a team. She modeled what a good coach should be so we could mirror it in another pool with our own teams. Her commitment to make this world a better place was her number one goal. She had her teams volunteer every year at the Knights of Columbus fishing derby. She would have her team pair up with adults with special needs and help them fish. Year after year, the attendees would be embraced by Jane’s love. Jane had such compassion for people. Her love for each person she was in contact with set her apart.

WIFE & MOM Jane met Jim at Sandburg. They worked alongside each other for 22 years. They were and still are a team. To this day, many know she is watching over the Eagles and standing by Jim’s side. Together they created the best balance for their athletes. One’s strength was the other one’s weakness and they were able to bond together and learn from each other as a result. They created well rounded student athletes by taking the talents and gifts they each had and pouring them into the athletes they coached. Jim and Jane were both passionate people with a love for water polo and swimming. They were outstanding parents to their daughter Maggie. Maggie grew up an Eagle. Their love for each other and their family helped create a Sandburg family that many athletes remember to this day. The Sandburg aquatic programs will forever remember the impact of the Caliendos.

PLAYERS UP FOR CONSIDERATION FOR DAVE PERRY SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

Kristen BurgerMaine West High School; Siena CollegeFor the past two seasons, Kristen has led the team in goals and steals. She also has been named to the All-Sectional team in 2015 and 2016. More importantly, Kristen has gone out of her way to encourage and help her teammates. She has been chosen to be the team captain for the past two seasons because of her leadership, perseverance, hard work, and commitment to excellence. Kristen helps everyone on her team improve with every practice. Her leadership skills in some of the day to day little things really make a lasting impression. Her strengths are apparent both in and out of the pool. She will play at Siena College in the fall.

Arianna DakurasFenwick High School; Carthage CollegeIn the four years, Arianna has been at Fenwick, nobody has worked harder or improved more than she did. She shows dedication to her teammates in and out of the pool by always looking to improve at practices and in the classroom. At practice, she demonstrates a strong work ethic and has been an integral part of the team. She motivates others to play better demonstating positivity and her attitude of total teamwork. She never gives up and understands the importance of being a good team member. An outstanding young lady, Arianna, would be an asset to any program and will be one at Carthage next year.

Kelly FrumkinFenwick High School; Santa Clara UniversityKelly is a four-year varsity player who has become an outstanding leader for the team. She has been a good mentor for younger players. She completely understands the meaning of the word team and strives to keep everyone involved in the team commitment. She has been recognized as an All-Sectional and All-State player. She is very accepting and trusting of the advice and comments given to her by coaches and her teammates. Academically and athletically, time and again, Kelly has moved the bar and has exceeded all expectations. Kelly will play at Santa Clara next season and will be an asset to the Broncos.

Brett HoferAndrew High School; Iona CollegeThrough his time on the team, Brett has turned into a leader through his actions both in and out of the pool. Brett’s competitiveness and dedication to water polo has changed his athletic career by earning him multiple honors in water polo. Water polo has brought out the best of his leadership. He has become dependable and helpful while being a constant example of a good work ethic. What is special about Brett is that his strong work ethic in the water has carried over into his academic life. He is a goal oriented person, who clearly understands that hard work pays off. He possesses the mental toughness to compete and battle through adversity both academically and athletically.

Cole MaizelNew Trier High School; Pitzer CollegeCole has been an outstanding member of the water polo team for the last four years. His commitment to the sport and dedication to improving his skills have been demonstrated day after day by his intense focus in the pool, his tireless work in the weight room and his regular attendance at practices in the off-season. He has studied the game intently and is constantly looking for ways to improve his game. Cole has served as the backbone to a defense that is allowing just under seven goals a game on average for the entire 2017 season. He is also currently working within a leadership team of students raising funds and completing manual labor for Habitat f¬or Humanity.

Alexander MarlottYork High School; Occidental CollegeAlex was the 2017 team captain and a three year varsity starter at York, leading the team to a state birth in 2016 and earning 2015 through 2017 all-sectional and 2016 through 2017 All-Conference recognition. Alex has a lot to be proud of in the pool, but his humility and kindness out of the water are his greatest personal strengths. When praised, Alex always seems to deflect those compliments towards his teammates. He demonstrates sportsmanship at all times, leads by example, and helps teach the game to his younger teammates. Alex will be missed at York, but Occidental College is lucky to have him as a student, water polo player, and swimmer next fall.

Mason McQuetNew Trier High School; UC Santa BarbaraMason’s commitment to the game of water polo extends beyond his skill set to include his peers and the future of the sport. Over the last 4 years, He has worked tirelessly in the pool and the weight room. His devotion to his skill set includes multiple clinics, ODP participation and spending his summers playing in California. Mason’s work on his game is inspiring to say the least, but it is his work with his peers to promote the team that is truly special. Mason is the glue the holds the team together during the offseason. He works hard to insure that all of his teammates feel welcome and have a voice. This inclusive nature allows new athletes to water polo feel welcome and willing to return and learn the sport.

PLAYERS UP FOR CONSIDERATION FOR DAVE PERRY SCHOLARSHIP AWARD (CONT’D)

Kyle PolandFenwick High School; Bucknell UniversityKyle just started playing water polo as a freshman. He was a coachable athlete who was always looking to follow directions and improve. Kyle has been a starter for the last two years. This year, he was selected as a captain and has been instrumental in leading the boys to the MCAC Varsity Championship and the IHSA Sectional Championship. In the last few weeks of the season, Kyle became very ill and was unable to attend school, practices and games for nearly three weeks. Before his illness, he was the leading scorer and always setting the tone for practices and games with his hard working mindset. Despite not playing in the MCAC championship game, he was selected as the MCAC Tony Lawless Senior Player of the Year and 1st team all-conference due to his hard work throughout the regular season.

Emma SteinEvanston Township High School; Villanova UniversityEmma came into her freshman year without any polo playing experience. She found the sport when she got to high school and instantly fell in love with it, and that love grow into dedication and drive. Emma became an instant leader, originally through effort and attitude, but now, as co-captain, she also leads through her talent and ability. After her freshman year, she attended any club polo opportunity that was available to improve her abilities and also to continue practicing with her teammates. Emma is a coach for two local age clubs throughout the year. She has a love and passion for the sport that will never diminish or waiver. She is the true definition of student athlete.

Emily WestloveNaperville Central; McKendree UniversityEmily began her high school career as a three sport athlete who gave everything she had to the teams that she was a part of and the teammates who have long admired her for it. She was the kind of person her teammates enjoyed being around because of her unrivaled work ethic and desire to be coached. As a natural leader, she has always been quick to praise her teammates for a job well done and able to modestly accept congratulations for her own high level of play. It is that modesty which clearly demonstrates her “team first” attitude and makes her the kind of athlete any coach would be proud to have on their team. For four seasons, Emily Westlove has come to practice each and every day and given 100% of her effort on every rep of every drill. As a sophomore and a junior, she was an All-State selection.

In 2011, Illinois Water Polo lost a legend.
