Dear Coach,

We are excited to welcome you to the 11th year of the Mohegan Sun World Softball Coaches’

Convention. Beginning with our first clinic in 2007, our mission has been to provide you with the very

best in coaching education. We have spent considerable time securing the best clinicians and designing a

curriculum that addresses all levels of play and a range of coaching areas.

Each year, we seek to improve your clinic experience. Building on last year's success, we are offering

you post-event access to select video of Breakout Sessions 1, 2 and 3, so that you can refresh your

memory or watch sessions you may have missed. Check the clinic website following the clinic for more

information on how to purchase these videos - we are confident you'll find them valuable. Also, in an

effort to provide you with information in the most convenient way possible, we will again offer an event

app this year (an improved 2017 version), which will provide you with the clinic schedule, presenter

biographies, a list of exhibitors, a digital version of the event handout and much more. Search Softball

Coaches Convention in the app stores.

We believe our convention is more than just a day of player and coaching instruction; it is a chance to

bounce ideas off your fellow coaches and players and learn from each other. Our convention staff,

exhibitors and guest speakers will be available to you throughout the clinic. Please don’t hesitate to

introduce yourself, ask a question or provide your own perspective on the game.

We thank all of our clinic presenters, who have found the time to share their softball knowledge and

passion for the game. A special thanks also goes to Mohegan Sun - our title sponsor - who has

welcomed us and allowed us to use their outstanding facilities. Lastly, we recognize our sponsors, whose

support helps make this clinic possible. We encourage you to visit our exhibitors and patronize them

throughout the year.

Enjoy the clinic and please take the time to let us know your thoughts on improving next year’s

Mohegan Sun World Softball Coaches’ Convention. We wish you all the best with your upcoming

season and look forward to seeing you in January 2018!

Yours in softball and coaching,

P.S. Become a World Softball Facebook Fan and get clinic updates throughout the year.

TOPIC: Using Technology and Training Tools to Take Your Pitchers to the Next Level!

PRESENTER: Jen Hapanowicz, USA Elite Training Founder & Youth Softball Instructor

www.SoftballCoachesClinic.com

Why is using Technology important in your pitcher’s development?

Technology will assist in setting benchmarks and standards for player to achieve. Properly using technology can get your player to their result faster and achieve their goals in a more efficient manner.

What type of technology should be part of pitcher development?

I. Slow Motion Video

Capture the teachable moment.

Most athletes are visual learners.

Helps to see mechanics that can’t be seen in real time.

What angle to look for properly analysis of a pitcher?

When you see the result or incorrect mechanics what is the true cause of the issue? Live video demo to teach you how to identify mechanical issues.

What to look for on the movement pitches: drop, rise, curve, screwball.

II. Radar Guns to measure pitcher’s speed (i.e. Pocker Radar)

Need to have benchmarks for learning breaking pitches.

What is considered a good speed for different ages?

While learning movement pitches we want to ensure we don’t lose speed.

III. Rev Fire to measure player spin rate measurement in Revolutions Per Second (RPS)

Bench Mark of spin rotation.

More spin will create better movement.

What are best training tools that will help you take the info provided from Technology to assist in getting your player to feel, understand and correct the pitching mechanics.

• Spinner • 14“ Ball • Weighted Ball • Balance Beam

TOPIC: Indoor Practice Plans

PRESENTER: Larissa Anderson, Head Coach, Hofstra University

www.SoftballCoachesClinic.com

THE ESSENCE OF AN INDOOR PRACTICE

Practice quotes

Practice is the essential core to preparation

The harder you work in practice the easier the performance will be

Practices and players need to have fun but without being funny

Practice thoughts

“On the hop” “Get Here” Be on time – Players and Coaches Establish a “ready area” Post your practice for the team to review Establish a practice routine - athletes NEED routine Introduce “new stuff” early in practice Practices need to move and flow Name each drill for a quick transition Practice EVERY softball fundamental EVERY day Challenge your players with competitive drills Finish practice with a positive snappy drill Create pressure situations in practice

DEVELOP YOUR INDOOR PRACTICE PHILOSOPHY

Prepare the individuals first… NOT THE TEAM

Break the skill down and teach

Student-athletes should get as many reps as possible, equal number of reps

After the skills are mastered then start evaluating your players for position

After you have them in position you can implement your team system

INDOOR PRACTICE DRILLS Ball Everydays Monkey in the middle with coach Monkey in the middle with players The Square Roll the Ball - Good hop/Bad hop Pride Drill The Weave Ball Suicides Running Catches Line Relay Drills 5-1 , 5-2, 5-3, 5-4
