2017 SAINT IGNATIUS GAME NOTES #58MILESTOCANTON 3

Wildcats Storylines ...“NO-NAME” DEFENSIVE LINE: Entering the 2017 season, many called the Saint Ignatius defensive line “inexperienced” and a signficant point of weakness after graduation. Week One proved otherwise, as the Wildcats’ defensive line played a big role in the Football Cats only allowing 3 points to Arch-bishop Hoban. The Knights managed just 137 on 46 plays – 33 yards on the ground and 104 through the air. Aidan Gill, Zach McMahan, Brad Andrich, and Aidan Wells combined for 5.5 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2.5 tackles for loss in their first starts on the varsity level. The trio, plus rotating linemen Jack Jamie-son, Darian Kinnard, and Grant Abbott could form an under-rated group this season.

NOT A BAD DEBUT: Junior Tommy Eichenberg was as adver-tised in his first varsity contest. The outside linebacker racked up 7.5 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and a sack in the opening contest. Eichenberg showed off crisp tackling form, wrapping up defenders and stopping Hoban ballcarriers in their tracks. Eichenberg seems to combine well with middle backer Andrew Keirn and Logan Joyce in Chuck Kyle’s 3-3-5 scheme.

FINDING SNYDER: Senior quarterback Kyle Hall played well in his first start at QB, in part because of sure-handed Sammy Snyder. The senior wideout hauled in six of Hall’s 15 comple-tions in Week One, recording 112 receiving yards, including a 57-yard catch and run. Maxwell Pike also caught a perfect 34-yard touchdown catch for the first touchdown of the season. Senior Michael Drobnick also caught 3 passes for 40 yards, showing off his skills as a physical pass catcher who plays well in space. CAN YOU TOP HIM?: Cameron Toppin began his senior sea-son with a great game for the Saint Ignatius secondary. The team’s top corner intercepted Hoban’s freshman signalcaller twice, stopping the Knights’ offensive momentum in the opener. One of the interceptions came on a critical pass to the end zone, thwarting a potential touchdown. Toppin came up in the clutch again later on, catching a Knight from behind to prevent a potential lengthy touchdown.

KICK IT, TRICKETT!: Senior Matthew Trickett started off the season well, connecting on a 48-yard field goal, two extra points, and three touchbacks. In his spare time this year, Trickett, along with his fellow special teamers, will be raising money for cancer research through Kick-It for Cancer.

STUD SOPHOMORE: Sophomore Connor Cmiel enjoyed quite the game in the JV Cats’ 34-15 win over Hoban on Saturday. Cmiel turned a pick into six, with a 61-yard interception return. Cmiel then returned a kickoff 87 yards for a score before hauling in a touchdown pass to seal the win.

Learning about the Cardinals ...PASS FIRST, ASK QUESTIONS LATER: Dating back to the days of Mitch Trubisky (and beyond), the Mentor Cardinals have utilized a spread offense designed to stretch oppos-ing defenses with the pass. With senior quarterback Tadas Tadarunas at the helm, the Cardinals will not stray from the strategy this season. Tadarunas notched 188 passing yards and 2 touchdowns in the opener, a 49-14 win over Massillon. Tadarunas has plenty of weapons, plus a 6’4” frame and an arm to get the job done. In addition, Tadarunas boasts a 3.9 GPA, so he has the smarts to be a commanding field general.

SHOOT TO THRILL: Tadarunas and the Cardinals will have plenty of weapons in the passing game. Logan Shea, Ste-ven Baird, and Derek Kleinhenz all return for their senior campaigns, giving Tadas options in the passing game. Shea and Kleinhenz caught touchdown passes of 11 and 35 yards, respectively, in last week’s win. Braeden Gefert Jr. will com-plete the Cardinals’ quartet of starters at wideout. Kleinhenz could be the most dangerous wideout to watch on Friday, standing at 6’3”, 190 pounds, 3 inches taller than Jett Elad and 4 inches taller than corner Cam Toppin.

MIXING IT UP: While the Cardinals rely heavily on the pass-ing game, Mentor has used the ground game to surprise opponents. The Cardinals have a solid rushing attack this season, headed by running back Chris Edmond. While Ed-mond did not start last season, the 5’9”, 175 pound back has plenty of potential. The senior scored the first touchdown of Mentor’s season with a 3-yard rushing touchdown, later add-ing a 56-yard scamper for a score. Edmond finished with 112 rushing yards in the opener.

GET UGLY: To stop the Wildcats’ offense, the Mentor de-fense will have to get help from its “big uglies.” The Cardi-nals will employ a 3-4 scheme, with end Noah Potter, nose tackle Dan Garcar, and end Dominic DiFranco likely starting. Potter will be the player to watch, as the junior has an im-posing size at end. Potter stands at 6’6”, 250 pounds, posing a challenge for the 6’7”, 330 pound Darian Kinnard at left tackle. Last season, the Wildcats rushed 48 times for 278 yards, wearing down the Cardinals. To prevent the same fate, a 49-7 loss, the Cardinals will need to stop the run.

YOUNG CARDS: The secondary might be one of the Car-dinals’ most inexperienced units, with a sophomore and a junior occupying two of the starting spots. Senior Will Lag-anke (5’7”, 180 pounds) and junior Billy Gorka (5’9”, 165) will likely start at corner, with senior Mike Warren (5’7”, 170) and sophomore Jackson Paglio (5’10”, 165) getting the nod at safety. Gorka notched an intereception last week.

WR/CB CONNOR KENNEDY ‘18

S JUSTIN SANDS ‘18While corner Cam Toppin stole the head-lines last week, safety Justin Sands recorded 2 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, and a crucial late interception. Sands will be critical to the Wildcats’ success on Friday, as the senior will play a large role in attempting to slow down Mentor’s high flying passing attack led by Mentor’s vet-eran quarterback Tadas Tadarunas.

BY THE NUMBERS/WILDCAT WATCH

After sitting out the first week of the sea-son due to injury, Con-nor Kennedy is set to return on Friday. The wideout/cornerback will look to make a big difference on both sides of the ball. The multi-dimensional athlete can swing a game with big plays on both sides of the ball with his speed and agility.

2017 SAINT IGNATIUS GAME NOTES 10

EDDIE DWYER’S PREVIEW

OHIO CITY - Saint Ignatius’ nationally acclaimed Head Coach Chuck Kyle ‘69 and Mentor’s highly successful and celebrated Head Coach Steve Trivisonno have a mutual respect that is evident every time the Wildcats and the Cardinals meet on the gridiron.

The love and respect both of these men have for the game of football is a major reason that Saint Ignatius versus Mentor has become one of the most anticipated encounters in Ohio every year, whether it’s the regular season, the postseason or both.

As the saying goes, the Wildcats and the Cardinals do it the right way.

“Steve and I have a very good relationship,” said Coach Kyle, whose ‘Cats lead their all-time series with Mentor, 12-8. “I spent a lot of my summer actually out in Mentor and various cities on the East Side helping develop a Rookie Tackle Pilot Program, one of the few in the country.

“Steve and I certainly enjoy good football and you know there is going to be a capacity crowd for this game,” Coach Kyle contin-ued, in reference to Friday’s 7 PM kickoff from Mentor’s tradition-rich Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium. “Early in the season to have kids experience that type of environment in a playoff caliber game is very valuable. We’ve won, they’ve won and I think both teams walk away knowing okay, that is what happens in a playoff caliber game. The intensity of it, that is what is so valuable, to have that on your schedule.”

Coach Kyle was quick to point out the mutual respect between the players every year that stems from them knowing that when Saint Ignatius and Mentor get together, there is “great football going on.”

The Wildcats and the Cardinals opened their new seasons in style, as Saint Ignatius traveled to Archbishop Hoban’s Dowed Field last Thursday night and, behind an outstanding performance by the defense, defeated the highly touted Knights, 17-3. Coach Kyle’s ‘Cats will enter the Mentor game ranked No. 1 in the area and No. 1 in USA Today’s Super 25 Midwest Regional Rankings.

Coach Trivisonno’s Cardinals, the area’s fifth-ranked program by Cleveland.com, traveled to Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium last Friday night and tamed the Tigers, 49-14.

A SAINT IGNATIUS AND MENTOR NFL BOND: Former Wildcats football (quarterback) and basketball (guard) standout Dave Ra-gone ‘98 is currently coaching former Cardinals Ohio Mr. Football quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who was the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears out of North Carolina. Dave is the Bears’ Quarterback Coach.

“See, even in the generations that go by,” said Coach Kyle of the Cardinals-Wildcats football connection. “That’s a fun little relationship (Ragone and Trubisky) to watch, isn’t it?”

A WILDCATS-CARDINALS NEIGHBORHOOD TIE: Saint Igna-tius’ outstanding senior tailback/captain Mark Bobinski, the pride of St. Mary’s of Mentor, knows almost all of the Cardinals. Mark lives about 10 minutes from Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium.

COACH KYLE ON MENTOR’S OFFENSE FOR 2017: “Mentor is running the ball pretty well from what I’ve seen,” said Coach Kyle of the Cardinals’ 1-2 ground game leaders Chris Edmond and Nick Saginario. Edmond rushed for 111 yards on 16 carries at Massillon.

“They give you all of those spread-out formations and you have to cover it because he (Cardinals three-year mainstay at quarter-back Tadas Tatarunas) can get the ball there,” Coach Kyle said. “Edmond has been finding some seams, he did a nice job against Massillon. When the smoke cleared, he (Edmond) had a great game.”

By Eddie Dwyer

Tatarunas is no stranger to the Wildcats’ football faithful. In 2015 as just a sophomore, Tadas emerged on the area high school gridiron scene by helping engineer an offense that produced 823 yards in a 63-56 shootout victory over Saint Ignatius at Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium. Those 823 yards included 531 yards and four touchdowns through the air by Tatarunas.

Last season was a completely different story, however, as the Wildcats’ defensive front pressured Tatarunas all night and the ‘Cats’ secondary locked up the Cardinals’ receivers in what was a dominant 49-7 victory by Saint Ignatius on Byers Field in Parma’s Robert M. Boulton Stadium. Tadas was 7-for-16 that Sept. 3, 2016 night, totaling just 97 passing yards.

That said, Tatarunas had a solid preseason leading up to the Massillon game, as he directed scrimmage victories over Pennsyl-vania’s defending AAAA State Champion Erie Cathedral Prep and Massillon Jackson, a program Saint Ignatius defeated in the first round of the playoffs last season.

Tadas was 17-of-25 for 188 yards and two touchdowns in the Massillon opener and he also ran for a 12-yard touchdown that saw him overpower a Tiger at the goal line. Mentor entered this season with 24 returning lettermen.

COACH KYLE ON THE CARDINALS’ 2017 DEFENSIVE UNIT: “From what we’ve seen, they have blended in the 3-4,” Coach Kyle said. “They have been a 4-front for a long time, but they’ve gone to a 3-4 and that looks like their base. So we’re expecting more blitzing from them. They also jump into a bear defense, which has made a comeback. That gives them a little more strength up front.

“So they give you different fronts and our quarterback (senior Kyle Hall) and linemen have to get a read on what front we’re getting and what adjustments we have to make on the blocking schemes.”

Among Coach Trivisonno’s leaders on defense are senior linebacker Mike Brey and 6-foot-6, 250-pound junior end Noah Potter.

SOME NUMBERS TO CHEW ON: Mentor is 26-16 in 16 OHSAA playoff appearances, which includes Division 1 state runner-up finishes in 2006, 2007 and 2013.

Coach Kyle has led his Wildcats to 27 playoff appearances, 11 Division I State Championships, including a remarkable five in a row (from 1991 to 1995), two state runner-up finishes (1996 and 2016), three national titles (1989, 1993 and 1995) and a national runner-up in 2008. Under Coach Kyle, Saint Ignatius has an OHSAA postseason record of 70-16.

THE AIR WAVES: If you can’t make it out to Mentor on Friday night, the savvy football duo of senior Matt MacKenzie and junior Zack Strom will bring you the action live over the Saint Ignatius Broadcasting Network.

Have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend and we will see you at Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium on Friday night and at Wasmer Field on Saturday for the 10 AM Junior Varsity Football encounter with Mentor’s Jayvees.

HOBAN RECAP

AKRON - Saint Ignatius Head Football Coach Chuck Kyle ‘69 has helped guide several outstanding defenses during his Hall of Fame career at his alma mater.

That said, the man who has led the Wildcats to a record 11 OHSAA Division I State Championships and three national titles, couldn’t say enough about the effort his 2017 defense put forth on Thursday night during the season opener at Archbishop Ho-ban.

The game, which matched the No. 1 and No. 3 teams in the area’s Top 25 rankings by Cleveland.com, saw Coach Kyle’s top-ranked ‘Cats come up with big plays on defense and timely efforts on offense in wearing down Archbishop Hoban, 17-3. The Knights’ offensive prowess led them to consecutive Division III State Football Championships in 2015 and 2016, and Archbishop Hoban has moved up to Division II this season under the OHSAA’s new competitive balance system.

“Honestly, we owe this win to the defense,” said Coach Kyle after he picked up his 335th career victory in starting what is his 35th season as the head of the football program at Cleveland’s Jesuit Preparatory School. “The offense did some great things, but defensively, wow. They (the Knights) had a chance to take the lead and we get a pick in the end zone, a beautiful play by Cameron Toppin. Cam had a great night. He took their passing attack away.

“In keeping field position, the defense was so good,” Coach Kyle continued. “We were getting the ball on our 40-yard line and the 50-yard line. With that situation in mind we got a chance to get some scores and we also buried a long field goal, which is always good.”

Along with his 48-yard field goal, which accounted for the game’s final points with just under three minutes left, and two extra-point kicks, Saint Ignatius’ outstanding senior kicker/punter Matthew Trickett was doing his part in the battle of field position with his steady punting.

“Credit to the defense,” Coach Kyle said. “They (the Knights’ offense) were giving us all kinds of unbalanced lines, motions and stuff like that. The first game of the year, you hope you just line up right But our kids had their heads into it and adjusted really well there. That’s why it’s 17-3.”

Coach Kyle emphasized that Thursday night’s game had a play-off atmosphere and that he was quite pleased with the perfor-mance of senior quarterback Kyle Hall, who was making his first start on the Varsity level.

“Kyle had to come out here and play against an excellent defen-sive football team,” said Coach Kyle. “By the time we got to the second quarter, the game was slowing down a bit for him. They were putting five and six players in the box, and sometimes as many as eight, and daring us to throw. And Kyle responded.”

Hall stood tall under heavy pressure and, after Archbishop Ho-ban took a 3-0 lead on a 37-yard field goal by Jack Branham with 6 minutes and 16 seconds remaining in the second quarter, di-rected a drive that saw him combine with underrated senior wide receiver Max Pike on a 34-yard touchdown strike. Trickett’s PAT extended the Wildcats’ lead to 7-3 with 3:39 left in the first half.

For the night, Hall completed 15 of 25 passes for 213 yards. ‘Cats’ gritty and gifted senior wide receiver Sammy Snyder had 6 receptions for 112 yards, including a 57-yard catch and run that gave Saint Ignatius a first-and goal at the 8-yard line on the first possession of the second half. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they would fumble the ball away at the Knights’ 6-yard line two plays later.

Not protecting the football inside the opponent’s 10-yard line almost became a major issue again for Saint Ignatius, when the

By Eddie Dwyer ball squirted loose off a running play from the Archbishop Hoban 2-yard line.

However, Wildcats senior tackle Billy Corte pulled off a tre-mendous effort by diving after the ball and, outmuscling and out-willing three Knights, recovering the pigskin in the scoreboard end zone of Dowed Field for a touchdown. Trickett’s extra-point kick was high and true, and the ‘Cats led, 14-3, with 3:02 left in the third quarter.

It was a moment Billy, a first class young man and a tireless worker, will never forget as his teammates, who couldn’t be any happier if it was one of them, celebrated with Billy on the sideline. The smile on the face of Saint Ignatius’ veteran Offensive Line Coach Adam Rini ‘99 was priceless.

Saint Ignatius’ defense, which is under the direction of out-standing Coordinator/Linebackers Coach Ryan Franzinger ‘02, continued to make the going tough for Archbishop Hoban’s promising freshman quarterback Shane Hamm and Co.

Another highlight reel interception by Toppin saw Cam pick the ball off on the home sideline and return it nearly 40 yards to the Knights’ 27-yard line. Then it was the relentless pressure down the stretch from senior defensive linemen Jack Jamieson, Aidan Gill and Bradley Andrich, junior linemen Aidan Wells and Zach McMahan, the tough and talented linebacker trio of junior Tommy Eichenberg, senior Andrew Keirn and senior Logan Joyce, along with the passionate pursuit of senior safety Matt Viancourt. Sim-ply put, the Wildcats’ new front line on defense is creating its own identity. Jamieson also doubles as a mainstay on the offensive line and Gill contributes to Coach Terry Fergus’ running attack.

Also complementing Toppin in the secondary were senior safety Justin Sands, who will be furthering his education and foot-ball career at Penn, and savvy junior corners Jett Elad and Danny Scelza.

Sands, who also had an interception that left no doubt on Thursday night, joins talented and tough as nails senior tailback Mark Bobinski, Jamieson and senior wide receiver/defensive back Connor Kennedy, a Holy Cross recruit, as Coach Kyle’s Captains.

FROM COACH FRANZINGER ON HIS DEFENSE: “They (the Knights) kept it pretty vanilla in their scrimmages, so I told the kids that they were going to see new formations and things they hadn’t practiced against, that they just had to play fast. I think we did that pretty well.

“At the same time, I told our guys that we were going to do things that they hadn’t seen either. We had some (Varsity) rook-ies that really stepped up and played well and I thought we did a great job against their running game. Cam (Toppin), Justin (Sands) and Matt (Vinacourt) provided the leadership and really helped solidify things.

“They’re (Hoban) going to win a lot of games, I hope, and they have a lot of good players. They have a big and experienced of-fensive line and again, I thought our new (defensive) line played very well. I’m very pleased. They (the Knights) came right out in unbalanced formations and our kids stuck with it.

“We were in some tough situations because of turnovers, but we responded very well, kept it together and continued to play hard. This was definitely a big win.”

Note: Coach Franzinger’s comment on hoping the Knights win a lot of games applies to the OHSAA’s Harbin playoff qualifying system, in which teams are awarded points for each game they win and each game a defeated opponent wins.

FROM TOMMY EICHENBERG, WHOSE DRIVE AND DETERMI-NATION ARE EVIDENT FROM THE OPENING KICKOFF UNTIL THE FINAL SECOND TICKS OFF THE CLOCK: “It’s Mentor Week,” Tommy said, referring to the ‘Cats’ next challenge, which comes on Friday night, September 1, versus the Mentor Cardinals.

The kickoff from Mentor’s Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium will be 7 PM.

Wildcats dominate Mentor on both sides of the ball in huge win

Parma, Ohio - As Saint Ignatius’ outstanding senior linebacker and captain Adam Shibley said more than once late Saturday night, This is a different Saint Ignatius defense.

And unlike last season, when the Mentor Cardinals racked up 823 yards of offense in a 63-56 shootout victory over the Wildcats in Mentor, that different defense was more than Coach Steve Trivisonno’s Cardinals could deal with.

Saint Ignatius, with its Hall of Fame Head Football Coach Chuck Kyle ‘69 describing his team’s performance as a true team victory, with the highest mark going to the defense, dominated Mentor in the second half and went on to a resounding 49-7 victory on Byers Field in Parma’s Robert M. Boulton Stadium.

In outscoring Mentor, 35-0, in the second half, the Wildcats snapped a three-game losing streak to the Cardinals and improved to 2-0 on the young season.

Mentor, which was coming off a 57-point performance in a one-sided vic-tory over the Massillon Tigers, now stands 1-1.

Coach Trivisonno’s Cardinals entered Saturday night’s headliner as the ninth-ranked team in cleveland. com’s Super 25 state poll, 11 spots higher than Saint Ignatius. What is it they say about polls?

This has been the goal since freshman year, to come out here and beat these guys, said Shibley, referring to the three-game losing streak to Men-tor. All offseason this was in our minds, this is the one we had to win. Our defense brought it, just like we always do. Last year, wasn’t us. Look out for a new defense, we’re here.

That new defense, combined with an offense that featured the leadership and athleticism of senior quarterback Patrick Ryan, an authoritative ground game led by the 1-2 punch of junior tailback Mark Bobinski and senior tail-back Jimmy Andrews, a deep receiving corps, and one of the top offensive lines in all of Ohio, sent a large chunk of the Mentor faithful heading for the highway after the third quarter.

Just hard work in the offseason, getting stronger, said Shibley of a 2016 front seven on defense that made things miserable for Mentor’s talented junior quarterback Tadas Tatarunas for almost the entire game. Yes, the same young man who passed for 531 yards and four touchdowns versus Saint Ignatius last season.

Tatarunas was 7-for-16 for just 97 yards on Saturday night. We play with pride and passion, I just love these guys, added Shibley. After Saint Ignatius moved to a 14-0 lead on a pair of 2-yard touchdown

runs by Bobinski and two extra-point kick by multi-skilled junior Matthew Trickett, who also excels for the Wildcats’ state and nationally acclaimed soccer program, Mentor got back in the game on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Tatarunas to junior wide receiver Derek Kleinhenz with 52 seconds left in the first half.

Following a fumble recovery at the Wildcats’ 29-yard line with 35.7 sec-onds on the first-half clock, the Cardinals were threatening again.

But up stepped ‘Cats’ senior defensive back Matt Wiegandt, who inter-cepted a pass in the left corner of the jumbo screen scoreboard end zone. Matt’s clutch effort came after Tatarunas was flushed from the pocket and had to throw on the run. Matt is a rare two-sport captain for this school year - football and hockey.

Coach Kyle was very pleased not only with his defense, but the balance the Wildcats displayed on offense in the second half.

Clinging to that seven-point halftime lead, Saint Ignatius came out for the third quarter and began to play as flawless as the perfect thumbnail moon that made itself comfortable over the visiting side of Byers Field.

With Andrews picking up tough, second-effort yards and Ryan, a first-year starter, running the offense like a savvy veteran, the Wildcats outscored the Cardinals, 21-0, in the third quarter. Saint Ignatius’ take-charge attitude in the third quarter featured touchdown runs of 2 and 30 yards by Andrews and sandwiched in between Andrews’ TDs was a 21-yard touchdown sweep over the left side by Ryan off a keeper that displayed Patrick’s speed and vision.

It was Katy Bar the Door after Bobinski powered his way into the jumbo scoreboard end zone from 7 yards out and, following the PAT by Trickett, the OHSAA deficit rule of a running clock came into play with 6 minutes and 23 seconds remaining in the game.

On September 17, 1920, seven men, including the legendary Jim Thorpe met in Canton, Ohio to form the American Professional Football Association (APFA), a precursor to today’s National Football League. An early hotbed of football, Canton was selected

as the site of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which opened its doors on September 7, 1963. Before the Hall of Fame came into existence, Faw-

cett Stadium was erected in 1938. The facility housed the successful McKinley Bulldogs. After the Hall of Fame was built in Fawcett’s back-

yard, the stadium hosted the Hall of Fame Game be-ginning in 1962. The first two Hall of Fame enshrine-ments took place in Fawcett Stadium, too.For a period of time in the 1990’s and 2000’s, Faw-

cett Stadium hosted the OHSAA’s Division I State Championship games. Saint Ignatius football fans be-came well-acquainted during this time, as the Wild-cats played six state title games at Fawcett Stadium. The Wildcats’ third state title in 1991 was played at

Fawcett, as the Football Cats defeated Centerville,

24-21. The Wildcats also won titles in 1992, 1999, 2001, 2008, and 2011 in front of adoring Wildcats fans in the historical stadium.During years in which the Wildcats played at

Fawcett, the football program adopted the phrase 58 Miles to Fawcett. The team’s 2017 hashtag plays off that theme. The stadium was renamed Tom Benson Hall of

Fame Stadium after its most recent renovation, completed in August 2017. So, the Wildcats retired the phrase 58 Miles to Fawcett. With the return of the OHSAA State Champion-

ship to Canton, the theme #58MilesToCanton has been adopted. The theme will be used on social media, apparel, and other items. After falling short of a state title in 2016, the Wildcats will look to retun to Canton in 2017 and claim the program’s state record 12th state title.
