EXPLORE...ON THE WATERSwimming Berta Vaughn

Six levels of classes are offered this year. Carefully select the level that best describes your child’s skills. Any exceptions require instructor approval. Classes for ages 7-12 include 15 minutes free time at end of class. Parents are encouraged to sign their children up for multiple swim sessions.

Classes meet at the Lopez Islander Pool.

Half hour classes: $35 Resident, $45 Nonresident* Max. 6/session - except toddlers.Hour classes: $55 Resident, $65 Nonresident* Max. 8/session*Add $5 if registering less than 10 days before class.

Toddler and Me: Adults, with instructor, join their child in the pool. Learn water safety skills to be comfortable in the water. Ages: 6 mos.-3 (with adult) Max. 12 Session 1: June 12-15 1:45-2:15

Session 2: June 26-29 1:00-1:30Swimming Introduction: For kids new to swimming or not comfortable in water. Learn basics of breath control, floating and beginning kicks and strokes. Ages: 4-6

Swimming Advanced: For kids able to swim pool length with front crawl stroke using rhythmic breathing and totally comfortable in deep water. Refine alternate strokes (back, side, and breast) and learn safety survival skills. Ages: 10-12

SailingWe will sail Lidos and Splashes. Participants must wear PFDs (provided) and know how to swim. Check our website for more details on clothing and what to bring. Youth Sailing Ages 9-18 unless otherwise noted Beginner Sailing with Mike Kaminskis: The first day we will be spending time learning the basics of water safety. Each participant will need to demonstrate they are capable of swimming a short distance. Session 1: July 10-14 9:30-12:30

Adult Sailing with Corky Searls (Session 1) and Mike Ka-minskis (Session 2 and Intermediate class) Ages: 16-AdultAdult Beginner Sailing: If you would like to learn to sail or want a comprehensive refresher class, this is for you. In five lessons, we will cover terminology and points of sail, rig and de-rig the boats, and learn to sail the boats around a simple course and return for a safe, gentle docking. You will learn about capsize recovery and basic water safety. Session 1: NEW weeklong July 31-August 4 9:30-12:30Session 2: July 11, 18, 25, Aug. 1 & 8 5:00-8:00

PaddlingKids in Kayaks - Two levels! Colin Doherty, Cascadia KayakOur classes are a fun way to help kids develop kayaking skills in a safe, supportive learning environment based on individual comfort level, fitness and abilities. Kayaks and all paddling and safety gear provided. Bring a snack, sunscreen, water bottle, towel, dry clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting wet. Instructor is experienced guide from locally owned Cascadia Kayak Tours. All classes meet at Odlin Park. Max. 8/sessionFee: $70 Resident, $85 Nonresident expires 1 week before class start (addl. $15 thereafter) Kids in Kayaks - Beginning: For kids just beginning to feel comfortable in a kayak or brand new to kayaking. Kids in Kayaks - Intermediate: For kids already comfortable in a kayak who want to take their skills to the next level. We’ll explore paddle strokes, boat control, navigation and safety, and rescue techniques. Bring a wetsuit if you have one, but it is not mandatory. Ages: 10-14

Sea Kayaking Fundamental SkillsWith Doug Benoliel, Tamara Buchanan, and Colin Doherty. Gain or refresh the skills needed to paddle safely and confidently in the waters of the Salish Sea. This popular, fun course is open to paddlers of all levels. We’ll practice launches, landings, wet exits, a variety of stroke techniques, as well as assisted and unassisted capsize recoveries for both single and double kayaks. Included in the course is a NOLS sea kayaking handbook. Bring your own boat, paddle, paddle float and bilge pump and plan on getting wet. Wetsuit recommended. Limited numbers of kayaks and wetsuits available to borrow – let us know at time of registration. Instructors have years of experience & are highly certified kayaking instructors & enthusiasts. (13 & 14 year olds possible with instructor approval.) Sea Kayaking High Seas Adventure & Skills Development With Colin Doherty. Further develop your sea kayaking skills. We’ll venture out on an educational day trip learning appropriate paddle strokes in dynamic water situations, applicable navigation, pod travel, rafting-up, open water kayak switch, towing and more to increase your on-the-water safety preparedness. Destination TBD by instructor with participant input. Bring lunch and your own boat, paddle, paddle float & bilge pump. Wetsuit recommended. Limited number of kayaks available to borrow - let us know at time of registration. Kayak Navigation: Land Instruction Cascadia Kayak Get the knowledge you need to safely negotiate the local waters with Colin, owner of Cascadia Kayak Tours and experienced kayak guide. Seafaring, Voyaging and Camping TripsWith Nahja Chimenti and Brian Goff. Lopez Seafaring and Voyaging Program leads this rowing/sailing adventure to several marine parks in the San Juan Islands. You’ll spend 5 days on the water aboard the Tern and 4 nights camping on the beach. Learn the basics of sailing and rowing small vessels, as well as seafaring skills such as the use of compass and charts. Details upon registration. Ages: Entering 7th-10th grades Max: 6/tripDate: July 25-29 Pre-trip meeting: 7/23 Fee: $300 Resident, $350 Nonresident (addl. $50 after 7/13)

Beginning SUP: We will begin instruction on land to become familiar with safety, the board, paddle and basics of paddling. Once we enter the water, we will learn how to paddle seated, kneeling, and standing. Session 1: August 9 9:30-11:00Session 2: August 11 10:00-11:30Intermediate SUP: Intermediate instruction will include refining and improving efficiency of paddling strokes. We will learn turning, moving forward and back on the board, the cross bow turn and the pivot turn. Date: August 9 12:00-1:30

Seaweed Ramble TWO Sessions! Dr. Ryan DrumJoin phycologist, medical herbalist, and 35-year Waldron Island homesteader for an enjoyable expedition as we carpool to a private beach. Dr. Drum will identify seaweeds, describing their food, medicinal & ethnobotanical uses as well as harvesting, preservation and safe storage tips. Shellfish license required if harvesting seaweed. No dogs allowed! Lavender Harvest Celebration Susie Teague Celebrate one of the special herbs of the season: lavender! A Faerie Went A Frolicking Alaya BattaliaThe forest is a place filled with magic. Introduction to Outdoor Living Skills Nathan DonnellyThis class is a foundation for further adventures. We will cover the basics of shelter & knots; safe and effective use of fire and bushcraft tools; water, food & hygiene; navigation & getting found; and Nature Awareness & attitude. Junior Ranger Awareness Days BLM StaffJoin our local BLM Ranger for a fun, interactive, experiential, and interpretive Lopez hike. We’ll explore the beauty of special species inhabiting the island and waters. The Flow of Nature Nathan DonnellyKids are taught to do, think, or be entertained, but seldom feel. Nature is far too intricate to be connected to like that. We will learn to directly experience Nature with all the senses & a quiet, curious mind. We will explore the patterns through which Nature flows & learn ways to see it in its entirety. Marine Mammal Adventure Day BLM StaffExplore the wonders of marine mammals with keen observation skills and techniques. Participants will use spotting scopes/binoculars to document behaviors of these animals and learn about Leave No Trace and the San Juan Island 7 Principles to help “Keep Wildlife Wild”. Art, poetry and storytelling will all be woven into this experiential day of wonder and learning. At this new weeklong camp led by Library Staff, elementary school children have the opportunity to make friends and have fun through exciting hands-on activities, noncompetitive games, summer reading, outdoor exploration, and arts and crafts. There will even be guest instructors who will offer some creative activities, both inside and out!Please note: Priority given to Lopez residents through July 11th.

Missoula Children’s Theater presents:

Peter and Wendy! After five years away, the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT)

will be returning to Lopez! MCT is the largest touring children’s theatre program in the U.S. They will delight you with the enthusiasm, cre-ativity, and professionalism of their production. How does it work? Two tour actors/directors travel to Lo-pez with the set, lights, cos-tumes, props, and make-up – everything that’s needed to put on a full scale musical,

except for the actors! The team will then hold an open audition to 1st-12th graders on Monday, June 26th at 10 am and the week’s schedule will be based on the role your child receives. Rehears-als take place Monday-Friday, with Wendy and Peter brought to life right on the Lopez Center for Community and the Arts’ stage on Saturday! With your child’s registration in this workshop, you will receive two free tickets to the final performance. Learn to Improv 3rd-12th GradeParticipation and teamwork are emphasized as students learn to act without a script. This workshop can be geared to all skill lev-els from beginners to more experienced performers. Date: 6/27

Acting 1st-3rd GradeThe basic tools of an actor’s trade - observation, memorization, concentration, and imagination are presented and explored in an entertaining manner. The students participate in a variety of fun exercises, learning to apply the actor’s tools to both performing and everyday life. Date: 6/28

Let’s Makeup! 1st-12th GradeMakeup is the most basic visual image for all performers. This workshop teaches students of all ages by demonstrating (on a few participants) corrective, character and special effects make-up. Please note this workshop is specific to theatre makeup tech-niques and not a “face painting” experience. Date: 6/29

Make a Jigging Puppet Dmitri Carter Create your own little dancing character with Dmitri Carter of Northwest Puppet Center. Jigging puppets (aka limberjacks) are known for the way they dance wildly to folk tunes. Build and paint your own character, as well as play around with making your character dance upon a little bouncing plank. Girl’s Circus Camp Darcy DuRuzGirl Circus ventures to Lopez from Oregon to present an excit-ing and highly energetic camp for girls which promotes strong body image, creativity, and team work through skills in the circus arts including: acro, dance, poi spinning, hooping, juggling, singing, stage craft, charac-ter development and more. A fun and safe learning commu-nity where girls can make new friends, develop increased self-confidence through mastery of skills and be part of an incredi-bly creative team. Bring a lunch. Children’s Summer Music Camp Rachel BuchmanRachel is the Head of the Young Children’s Division at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and Artist in Residence for the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival. If the weather is good, all are invited to join Rachel for a Barn Dance at Sunnyfield Farm on Thursday evening! For ages 3-7: Hands-on, bodies-on, voices-on imaginative musi-cal exploration that includes singing, rhythm games, percussion instruments, and creativity. This camp encourages children to make and understand music through joyful experience while de-veloping musical pre-literacy skills needed to play instruments. Dates: July 31-August 3 Ages 3-4 meet at Lopez Children’s Center from 10:00-11:00.

Wet-On-Wet Watercolor Painting Ellen PetersonThis way of painting is particularly suited to very young children, although it is used by all ages. Quality watercolor paper is soaked in water, placed on a board, and the excess water sponged off. Liquid watercolor paints are then used. Children start with a single primary color, then do paintings combining two primary colors, and they discover a wonderful, mesmerizing experience of resulting secondary colors!Dates: July 11-13 9:15-10:15 Ages: 3-4Fee: $25 Resident, $30 Nonresident (addl. $5 after 7/1) Meet: Sunnyfield Farm Yurt Max. 8

Write Away! Margot Kahn CaseWriting is a way of having a conversation between the different selves inside you: the self that depends on friends but needs to be alone, the self that loves islands and is terrified of the sea. We’ll play with words in fun ways to tap into our complexities. We’ll try some different forms—micro-fiction, collage poems (poems constructed of words from magazines, conversations, songs, etc.), and 4-panel comics—and see what worlds we can create. A Pirate’s Life for Me! Sally MooreAhoy, Mateys! Ye be learnin’ to read treasure maps, and goin’ for a treasure hunt on the beach. Aspiring pirates will decorate a box for their booty and have an opportunity to practice their pirate talk and walk!

Environmental Sculpture Polly HamUsing the incredible environmental sculpture of Andy Goldsworthy as our inspiration, we will create with whatever natural materials draw our attention. Creative Dance and Art Kimberly TaylorJoin us for an exciting workshop exploring the arts. Each day will blend creative experiences in the visual arts, poetry and creative dance. Families are invited to come on Wednesday from 4:30-5:00 pm for an informal sharing of art and movement. Children’s Baking Classes Demetria ProvatasCinnamon Rolls for Ages 5-7: Create a whole-grain dough with maple syrup sweetened cinnamon filling, topped with cream cheese icing! Children will learn the basics of measuring and mixing and the process of how cinnamon rolls are rolled, sliced, and baked. Go to www.lifrc.org and follow the ‘Register for Classes’ link. Credit or debit card required. Once registered, log in any time to access more information about your registered classes.

2. Mail: Send registration form and payment to LIFRC, PO Box 732, Lopez Island, WA 98261. Your registration will be processed within 48 hours of receipt. Please print clearly.

3. Stop by our office: 160 Village Road (above Lopez Children’s Center).

Submit Registration & Fees Early! Some classes have limited space and fill quickly. Every class must meet minimum enrollment 10 days in advance of workshop, or may be cancelled. Be kind to each other and your instructors and register as early as possible! Donations: Our goal is to make it possible for every Lopez child to attend workshops by offering scholarships and keeping workshop fees low and affordable. Grants and annual fundraising support the costs of running the workshops.
