NEW TEACHERS AND LONGER CLASSES! Five levels of classes are offered this year. Abby Webster (teaching June 18-22) is a Water Safety Instructor and has 7 years of experience teaching young swimmers. Susie Frank (teaching June 25-29) is Red Cross certified in Lifesaving/Lifeguarding/CPR and has 25 years of experience teaching swimming. Age exceptions require instructor approval. Classes meet at Lopez Islander Pool.

Half hour classes: $45 Resident, $55 Nonresident*Forty-five & sixty min. classes: $60 Resident, $70 Nonresident* *Add $5 if registering less than 10 days before class.Parent & Me (Ages 6 mo.-3): Adults, with instructor, join their child in the pool. Adv. Beginners (Ages 5-7; Max. 6): Learn basics of swimming, floating & arm movements. Child should be comfortable in the water. SailingWe will sail Lidos and Splashes. Participants must wear PFDs (provided) and know how to swim. Check our website for more details on clothing and what to bring. Youth Sailing Ages 9-18 unless otherwise noted Beginner Sailing with Mike Kaminskis and Rowena Wilson-Olivo: The first day will be spent learning the basics of water safety. Each participant will need to demonstrate they are capable of swimming a short distance. Session 1: July 9-13 9:30-12:30

We will cover terminology and points of sail, rig and de-rig the boats, discuss capsize recovery and basic water safety, and sail the boats around a simple course and return for a safe, gentle docking. Paddling

Sea Kayaking Fundamental Skills Colin DohertyGain or refresh the skills needed to paddle safely and confidently in the waters of the Salish Sea. This popular, fun class is open to all levels. We’ll practice launches, landings, wet exits, a variety of stroke techniques, as well as assisted and unassisted capsize recoveries for single and double kayaks. Included is a NOLS sea kayaking handbook. Bring your own boat, paddle, paddle float and bilge pump and plan on getting wet. Wetsuit recommended. Instructor is a highly certified and experienced kayak guide. Date: July 13-15 Max. 6 Ages: 15-Adult (Ages 13-14 possible with instructor approval.) Kayak Navigation: Land Instruction Colin DohertyGet the knowledge you need to safely negotiate the local waters with an experienced kayak guide. Sea Kayaking High Seas Adventure & Skills Development With Colin Doherty. Venture out on an educational day trip! Learn appropriate paddle strokes in dynamic water situations, applicable navigation, pod travel, rafting-up, open water kayak switch, towing and more to increase your on-the-water safety preparedness. Destination TBD by instructor with participant input. Bring lunch, your boat, paddle, paddle float & bilge pump. Wetsuit recommended. Seafaring, Voyaging and Camping TripsLopez Seafaring and Voyaging Program leads this rowing/sailing adventure to several marine parks in the San Juan Islands. You’ll spend 5 days on the water aboard the Tern and 4 nights camping on the beach. Learn the basics of sailing and rowing small vessels, as well as seafaring skills such as the use of compass and charts. Details upon registration. Beginning SUP: We will begin instruction on land to become familiar with safety, the board, paddle and basics of paddling. Once we enter the water, we will learn how to paddle seated, kneeling, and standing. Session 1: August 1 10:00-12:00Session 2: August 2 10:00-12:00Intermediate SUP: Intermediate instruction will include refining and improving efficiency of paddling strokes. We will learn turning, moving forward and back on the board, the cross bow turn and the pivot turn. Date: August 2 1:00-3:00

Have fun with friends, read, learn and enjoy the outdoors at Library Summer Camp! Fun summer literacy and enrichment activities will enhance academic skills. Students will participate in book clubs, science and art projects, outdoor games, and other educational activities. Students will also learn life skills by preparing healthy snacks, cooking, and cleaning up daily. Read, invent, create, and discover! Weekly projects will allow kids to build on learning throughout the week. Ample outdoor time will be incorporated. Missoula Children’s Theater presents:

King Arthur’s Quest! The Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) is returning to Lopez

this summer! MCT is the largest touring children’s theatre program in the U.S. They will delight you with the enthusiasm, cre-ativity, and professional-ism of their production. How does it work? Two tour actors/directors trav-el to Lopez with the set, lights, costumes, props, and make-up – everything that’s needed to put on a

full scale musical, except for the actors! The team will then hold an open audition to entering 1st-12th graders on Monday, June 25th at 10 am and the week’s schedule will be based on the role your child receives. Rehearsals take place Monday-Friday, with King Arthur’s Quest brought to life right on the Lopez Center for Community and the Arts’ stage on Saturday! With your child’s registration in this workshop, you will receive two free tickets to the final performance. Learn to Improv 3rd-12th GradeParticipation and teamwork are emphasized as students learn to act without a script. This workshop can be geared to all skill lev-els from beginners to more experienced performers. Date: 6/26

Drama Quest 3rd-8th GradeA grand adventure through a jungle awaits! Using active and energetic role-playing in a dynamic group setting, students will develop problem-solving skills by engaging their communication and imagination skills in this fun-focused workshop. Date: 6/27

Let’s Makeup! 1st-12th GradeMakeup is the most basic visual image for all performers. This workshop teaches students of all ages by demonstrating (on a few participants) corrective, character and special effects make-up. Please note this workshop is specific to theatre makeup tech-niques and not a “face painting” experience. Date: 6/28

Make a Marionette Dmitri Carter Create a simple marionette with Dmitri Carter of Northwest Puppet Center. Dmitri has been a puppeteer for decades and has taught several puppet workshops on Lopez. What’s Mime Is Yours! Pam PulverExplore Mime and Clown Theatre with inter-national performer and educator, Pam Pulver! Did you know that the robot, moonwalk, and silent film are mime? And physical story-telling is fun? Class includes mime technique, clown walks and routines, physical improvi-sation, scenework and a final presentation. Orchestra Camp Naomi VlietThis camp is for beginning to intermediate violinists, violists, cellists, and double bassists. Girl’s Circus Camp Darcy DuRuzGirl Circus ventures to Lopez from Oregon to present an exciting and highly energetic camp for girls which promotes strong body image, creativity, and team work through skills in the circus arts including: acro, dance, poi spinning, hooping, juggling, sing-ing, stage craft, character development and more. A fun and safe learning community where girls can make new friends, develop increased self-confidence through mastery of skills, and be part of an incredibly creative team. Bring a lunch. Northwest Foraging Doug Benoliel and Tamara BuchananWelcome to eating from the wilds! Learn to identify and prepare edible wild plants of the San Juans. The class will include an intro meeting on foraging and a presentation for the Saturday field trip. Learning (and Re-learning) Bridge With Scott Case, Mary Wondra, and Ken Booth. If you’ve never played bridge but enjoy other trick-taking card games, here’s your chance to learn another great game! European Woodcarving Chuck Schietinger This class uses tools and techniques that have not changed in over 600 years. Students learn mostly by carving in hard and soft woods, studying the work of other carvers, and watching the teacher carve. You will learn safe ways to use classic European woodcarving tools. Wet-On-Wet Watercolor Painting Ellen PetersonThis way of painting is particularly suited to young children, although it is used by all ages. Quality watercolor paper is soaked in water, placed on a board, and the excess water sponged off. Liquid watercolor paints are then used. Children start with one primary color, then do paintings combining two. Go to www.lifrc.org and follow the ‘Register for Classes’ link. Credit or debit card required. Once registered, log in any time to access more information about your registered classes.

2. Mail: Send registration form and payment to LIFRC, PO Box 732, Lopez Island, WA 98261. Your registration will be processed within 48 hours of receipt. Please print clearly.

Submit Registration & Fees Early! Some classes have limited space and fill quickly. Every class must meet minimum enrollment 10 days in advance of workshop, or may be cancelled. Be kind to each other and your instructors and register as early as possible! Donations: Our goal is to make it possible for every Lopez child to attend workshops by offering scholarships and keeping workshop fees low and affordable. Grants and annual fundraising support the costs of running the workshops. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Summer Workshops Fund with your registration or online at www.lifrc.org. Lopez Island Conservation Corps (LICC) Summer Crew: Spend 8 weeks conserving island land-scapes & exploring the environment with LICC.
