Pork Festival set, Sept. 16-17By Eddie Mowen [email protected]
EATON — The Pork Festival Board of Directors has been hard at work planning and preparing for the 47th Annual Pork Fes-tival, to be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16-17.
As always, the festival will be located at the Preble County Fairgrounds in Eaton, but will be without the traditional smorgasbord meal option.
According to a press release issued by the directors, this year’s event has some exciting changes for festival-goers to take part in and make the event even more family-friendly. Festival-goers can watch the famous racing pigs, and also ride a camel or pony, and pet animals in the petting zoo.
The board of directors also said the education portion of the festival has expanded into three barns. The display will feature 11 different live breeds of pigs. There will also be hands-on activi-ties for both kids and adults to participate
in cooperation with the Ohio Pork Coun-cil and National Trail MVCTC FFA Chap-ter. There will be agriculture community groups with displays from around Preble County, as well as colleges and institu-tions with exhibits displaying what they have to offer.
Individuals who participate in these activities will have the opportunity to win a free goody basket compliments of the Pork Festival.
There will also be a new featured food venue called the “Chop Stop” in lieu of the smorgasbord. The Chop Stop will include a meal which can be enjoyed at the festival or taken home. The meal will consist of one pork chop, potato wedges, applesauce, roll, pie and a drink for $8 or for $10, two pork chops, potato wedges, applesauce, roll, pie and a drink.
“The Chop Stop is more feasible, family-friendly option for festival-goers to partake in,” the release noted.
Love the festival sausage? According to festival directors, shoppers can still get fried
sausage a la carte at the Chop Stop or at the Pop-N-Chop.
The festival will once again be featuring Short Order for a la carte dining, with the addition of cheesecake to the famous pie families love to eat.
The release continued: “Make sure you have some of the famous pulled pork nachos with all the fixings. Don’t forget to come for the All You Can Eat pancake & sausage breakfast served from 6:30- 10 a.m. each day. The Country Store will have fresh bacon, ham, ribs, loin, roast, sausage, chops, crack-lings, jerky and pork snack sticks.”
The Souvenir Shop will be located in the new rabbit pavilion, according to organiz-ers. New items such as concrete lawn orna-ments, piggy banks, piggy key chains and this year’s festival t-shirts have been added.
The Pork Festival has free admission, free parking and free entertainment. Visit the website porkfestival.org for the full schedule.

Since 1971, the Preble Co. Pork Festival has been held on the third full weekend in September. As a non-profit organization, all profits have been returned to Preble County, including over $1,740,000 in fairground improve-ments and $89,500.00 in educational scholarships (Tim H. Miller Memorial College; Paul E. Ray Memorial College; and Preble County high schools).
• The Preble County Pork Festival was named Ohio’s 2011 Pork Promoter of the Year!
• Past exhibitors came from Ohio along with Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Penn-sylvania, New York, Tennessee, Alabama and Iowa.
• The third full weekend in Septem-ber was chosen as our festival weekend based on 100 years of weather statistics; it’s statistically the driest weekend in Eaton!
• 47,000 pounds of pork was served during the 2015 festival alone!

2017 PREBLE COUNTY PORK FESTIVAL The Register-Herald10 Wednesday, September 13, 2017
• The United States pork industry represents a significant value-added activity in the agricultural economy and a major contributor to the overall United States economy. Nationwide, more than 67,000 pork producers marketed more than 112 million hogs in 2013, and those animals provided total gross receipts of $23.4 billion. Although the hog industry in the Unit-ed States has undergone rapid struc-tural changes in recent years, total hog numbers have increased from a decade ago.
• About 547,800 U.S. jobs are involved in various aspects of the pork industry, ranging from input suppliers to produc-ers to processors and handlers as well as Main Street businesses that benefit from purchases by people in those industries. Overall, an estimated $22.3 billion of personal income and $39 billion of gross national product are supported by the hog industry.
• The estimated $23.4 billion of gross output, or sales, from pork production activity is linked directly to the states’ hog slaughtering and processing sectors. The total sales from the pork produc-tion and processing sectors support additional input purchases, spending on transportation and other services, as well as consumer-related purchases worth nearly $122 billion of direct and indirect sales throughout the U.S. economy.
• Exports add significantly to the bot-tom line of each U.S. pork producer. U.S. exports of pork and pork products totaled 2.2 million metric tons in 2014, represent-ing more than 26 percent of U.S. produc-tion, and those exports add more than $62 to the value of each hog marketed. Exports supported about 110,000 jobs in the U.S. pork and allied industries.
• The U.S. pork industry today pro-vides 23 billion pounds of safe, whole-some and nutritious meat protein to consumers worldwide.

• Many farmers raise pigs based off of the animal’s life cycle and may not necessarily raise a pig from birth until market all in one barn or on one farm. Today, they are five common types of pig farms in the United States.• Farrow-to-finish farms man-
age all stages of pig growth and development, from breed-ing through finishing, to market weight of about 285 pounds.• Farrow-to-nursery farms
specialize in the breeding of sows and raising of 40- to 50-pound feeder pigs, which are then sold to farms that spe-
cialize in feeding pigs until they reach market weight.• Farrow-to-wean farms over-
see breeding herds and raise pigs until they are weaned at approximately 10 to 15 pounds, at which time they are sold to wean-to-finish farms.• Wean-to-finish farms pur-
chase weaned pigs from far-row-to-wean farms and grow them until they reach market weights.• Finishing farms buy 40 to
50-pound feeder pigs from far-row-to-nursery farms and raise them until they reach market weight.
