INTRODUCTION:

A partial denture will not succeed unless it is designed and constructed in

harmony with all the physiologic and mechanical problems present in the

patient’s mouth. Surveying and designing are important steps towards achieving

a successful restoration. A well-executed design serves as a blueprint for

fabrication of the removable partial dentures. Lack of plan, haphazard

preparation and lack of abutment preparation are a few factors of partial denture

failure.

• SURVEY: "The procedure of locating or delineating the contour and

position of the abutment teeth and associated structures before designing a

partial denture". GPT 8

• SURVEYING: "An analysis and comparison of the prominence of intraoral

contours associated with the fabrication of a prosthesis". GPT

• SURVEYOR: "An instrument used in the construction of a removable

partial denture to locate and delineate the contours and relative positions

of abutment teeth and associated structures". GPT 8

• SURVEY LINE: "A line drawn on a tooth or teeth of a cast by means of a

surveyor for determining the positions of the various parts of a retainer"

A line produced on a cast by a surveyor marking the greatest prominence of Height of Contour in relation to the selected & planned path of insertion of a restoration

• GUIDING PLANE: Two or more vertically parallel surfaces of abutment

teeth so oriented as to direct the path of placement/removal of a removable

partial denture.

• PATH OF INSERTION: The direction in which a prosthesis is placed upon

and removed from the abutment teeth. OR The path followed by the

prosthesis from its first contact with the teeth until it is fully seated. This

path coincides with the path of withdrawal

• HEIGHT OF CONTOUR: A line encircling a tooth designating its greatest

circumference at a selected position.

! !

The survey line divides the tooth to suprabuldge occlusaly and infrabuldge

cervically. The infrabulge is the undercut.

These undercuts are where the retentive tip of the retainer is placed to retain the

prostheses from displacement.

!

The term Undercut when used in reference to an abutment tooth is that portion

of a tooth that lies between the height of contour and the gingiva.

When used in reference to other oral structures, it means the contour or cross-

section of a residual ridge or dental arch that would prevent the placement of a

denture.

!

PURPOSES OF SURVEYING:

Determines the most advantageous path of insertion.

Locates proximal tooth surfaces - guiding surfaces.

Locates and measures undercuts.

Identifying hard or soft tissue interferences.

Determining a path of insertion consistent with esthetic requirements.

Delineating the height of contour of the abutment teeth and identifying areas of

undercut.

Planning restorative procedures.

Recording the most ideal cast position for future reference.

Planning for the RPD design and the required mouth preparation.

Surveyors vary in design, but most have the following parts:

1. A level platform that is parallel to the bench top and on which the cast holder is moved.

4. A surveying arm that extends vertically from the horizontal arm. The surveying arm is capable of movement in a vertical direction

5. A surveying table: designed to hold a dental cast. The surveying table includes a ball-and-socket joint, which permits spatial reorientation of the cast (ie, tipping or tilting).

6. Surveying tools that may be placed in the mandrel and used in various

surveying applications. These surveying tools include:

a) An analyzing rod, which is used to determine relative parallelism of

surfaces on a dental cast.

b) A carbon marker, which is used to mark the height of contour on one or

more surfaces of a dental cast.

c) Undercut gauges, which are used to identify the positions of desired

undercuts on dental casts.

d) A wax knife, which is used during blockout procedures and in the

construction of surveyed restorations.
