January 2018Our new introductions in 2018 number closer to ten, hopefully that is a sign of our breeding program maturing. With Allium x Millenium chosen as the PPA plant of the year I would like to focus you on our Allium Breeding. Our closest to Millenium is one called August Asteroids a late and heavy bloomer that has a similar size and stature with the color being on the lighter side. Windy City on the other hand has a similar color but blooms earlier in late June early July. It’s also shorter growing to 15” tall. We have many new Alliums under way including a purple form that resembles our Pink Planet and larger form of Summer Beauty. Some of these new Alliums reseeded into the gravel garden next to Eryngium yuccifolium Prairie Moon, their globe shaped flowers are a very nice compliment to each other especially in dry conditions. We continue to select for sterility too.

Amsonias continue to make slow and steady progress. The bases are being loaded with our Baseball series. This year is time for the Seventh Inning Stretch. This illustris hybrid has smaller glossy foliage on 3’ plus upright and fuller plants. Light blue flowers are more clustered too. Golden yellow fall color with red stems peaking through. Delosperma x Orange Crush PPAF is a creamy orange sport of Fire Spinner. This year we also found a yellow sport and a variegated leaf too. Some of our latest Geums are turning out to be our best. Cherry Bomb’s semi double flowers emerge red but quickly takes on cherry pink color. It has shorter stems growing 12-15” tall. Top Shelf Margarita has exceptional dark green foliage which makes a nice foil for the upright 15-18” red stems and buds opening to electric yellow, lightly doubled flowers. In July 2017, 40% of these rebloomed too.

Our newest seed strain is another Liatris. Liatris ligulistylus Butterfly Magnet is selected for the slightly shorter stems typically 4-5’ tall. They are just as attractive to the male Monarchs. Rudbeckia x American Gold Rush has had the most interest this year with a handful of new licensees including some of the biggest growers in the country. URC trials are underway too. Trials in Georgia, Illinois and Colorado all looked great in July 2017. This year we have Rudbeckia x Glitters like Gold PPAF that resembles Goldsturm. This Septoria resistant plant is an improvement over Goldsturm. It has large cheesy gold flowers on heavy blooming plants, held on 3’ stems.

We have 2 new groundcover sedums. Sedum album Big Rock is a robust large green form of album with white flowers in June. Sedum rupestre Making Progress PPAF has deep green needle like foliage then in in late fall through May the plant turns plum red. It makes a great companion to Angelina and Blue Spruce. We also have a new seedling that is the Hydrangea Limelight of the Sedum world. I look forward to sharing it as soon as possible.

While we have always looked at ornamental grasses as part of our business, it has become more and more of a focus as we continue breeding some of the best new grasses available, including Andropogon gerardii Blackhawks. This year we are bringing back our dwarf June grass called Tiny Tot. It has nice blue foliage and a dwarf habit under 1’ tall. On the larger size we have 5’ tall Molinia arundinacea Dutch Dreamer. It is just the right size when it comes to blending the tall and small. Golden yellow fall color on upright plants.

After 18 years of breeding Pennisetum we are getting some exciting color breaks including a golden form, extra deep green foliage, and heavy blooming short red flowered types all with nice fall color.

As our breeding program matures, we have begun to see things that we never even considered breeding for. We are currently breeding Andropogon, Bouteloua, Carex, Fescue, Miscanthus, Panicum, Pennisetum, Schizachyrium, Sesleria and Sporobolus.

We are even looking at some of the tender, yet perennial, grasses like Stipas and Pennisetums.

Brent Horvath- Breeder

p Our Breeding Philosophy POur plants are bred and selected in the tough conditions of the Midwest with hot humid summers and cold wet winters. We strive to breed plants not as a means,

but with an end in mind. Our goals are simple- improved, durable, ornamental garden plants for our own climate and the rest of the world! Our plants are bred to stand the test of time, if

they don’t survive or thrive in the garden why bother.
