The committee includes senior membersfrom leading cultural organisations like TheMusic Academy, Kalakshetra Foundation,Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan,Sruti magazine andAanmajothi. The concerts are held to promotethe diverse cultural heritage like Theru Koothu,Bommalattam, Oyilattam, Devarattam andmore. During concerts, local residents oftenhonour the performers with gifts.

A fortnight back during a concert at SivanPark (K. K. Nagar), a Bommalattam artistewas gifted a silk shawl by a resident.

Last week, a group of residents presentedRs.1,000 cash to a troupe that performedOyilattam in Jai Park (Arumbakkam).

The calendar of the events is listed on thewebsite www.chennaiuccn.org.

I appeal to the readers of Mambalam Timesto support this initiative and attend these freeconcerts to motivate the performers. KristuRatu, T. Nagar

use these pavements daily have to risk their lives by walking on theroad as even the road margins are blocked by parked vehicles. As noaction is taken by the authorities, the encroachments continueunabated and also proliferate.

Forced to walk on the roads, the pedestrians also become easytargets for chain snatchers. During peak hours, the pavements arealso misused as a freeway by 2-wheeler riders, thereby putting thelives of pedestrians in danger.

I wonder when the officials concerned will take stringent actionagainst these offenders instead of kneejerk action whenever there isa media outcry. JiJo Johny, Madley Road, West Mambalam

One-way rule on Thyagaraya Roadaffects motorists

Sir, Thyagaraya Road (T. Nagar) has beenmade one-way after the launch of PedestrianPlaza.

Though the Plaza project has been wellimplemented with lots of facilities forpedestrians, I have observed that it is notproperly monitored by civic officials.Oftenvehicles are parked on the pavement andbeggars can be seen sleeping on the pavement.

Though the one-way rule offers convenienceto shoppers, it has not been welcomed bymotorists and the residents of the by-lanes.Motorists have to take a detour via inner roadsand travel an additional 3 to 5 km. to reachAnna Salai. MTC buses are forced to plythrough narrow streets thereby posing a dangerto pedestrians.

I appeal to the officials concerned to maintainthe plaza, developed spending crores, properlyand rework the traffic rules to make itconvenient for motorists as well. N.Vijayaraghavan, 59/1, Muthalamman KoilStreet, West Mambalam, Ph: 99626 64766

Damaged surface, parking woes on Brindavan Street Extn.

Sir, After the heavy rains last month, the stretch of the BrindavanStreet Extension, West Mambalam up to the junction of Arya GowdaRoad has been severely damaged.

This arterial road connects Ashok Nagar and T. Nagar.Further, the carriageway on both sides of the road is blocked by

parked lorries which narrows the road width causing traffic jams. Withthe pavements too damaged, pedestrians, especially senior citizens, are forced to walk on the busy road, thereby risking their lives.

I request the traffic police to prevent parking of heavy vehicles onthe road, or at least allow parking only on one side. The same was agreedto by police officials during a public grievance meet last year, but hasstill not been implemented.

I request the authorities to take immediate action to repair thedamaged road. S. Krishnamoorthy, Mathangi Flats, 27/4,Brindavan Street Extension, West Mambalam, Ph: 96264 25754

MTC stops service on many routes from T. Nagar

Sir, It looks like T. Nagar bus terminus will soon become an exclusiveterminus for buses that ply only towards Tambaram which includeroutes 72 C, 2, 154 and 5A.

3 years back, MTC stopped services on routes 9 and 10 that pliedto Parrys Corner via Egmore. Recently, the service on route 12 fromT. Nagar to Ice House, which was in operation for 60 years, wasstopped abruptly.

I guess they may soon stop services on a few more routes including5B.

Can MTC authorities explain why? R. Krishnan, 25, KrishnaStreet, T. Nagar
