A man of much charm, wit and humour, MaharajapuramViswanatha Iyer faced the wrath of his orthodox, rigidly tradition-bound Brahmin community, especially in his hometown of temples,Kumbakonam, for acting in a movie, particularly with K. B.Sundarambal. But he was one who never batted an eyelid inbreaking rules and taboos and kicking at sacred cows and bulls!

(This writer had the pleasure and privilege of knowing the greatman well in spite of the vast difference in age between them, andenjoyed his love and affection. He had an inexhaustible fund of ‘blue’jokes, risqué anecdotes and tales about men and women of histimes and chimes. Sadly most of them are unprintable even in thispermissive age!)

Kalki described him as ‘ Maharagapuram’ (because he sang allragas so brilliantly) and ‘Sangeetha Bhoop-pathi’. (One of Iyer’stitles was ‘Sangeetha Bhoopathi’ and his penchant for mixing theHindustani raga ‘Bhoop’ with the Carnatic raga ‘Mohanam’ in-spired Kalki to give him the amended title!)

During the making of ‘Nandanar’, the director M. L. Tandon faceda delicate and embarrassing situation. In a scene, the Brahminlandowner Vedhiyar realizes that his low-born farmhand, Nandan(KBS), is indeed a Lord Nataraja-blessed soul. By way of makingamends for the past ill-treatment of his farmhand, he has to fall athis feet in obeisance and apology. Now Iyer was a Brahmin andKBS hailed from a lowborn obscure background. KBS felt upsetand did not want Iyer to fall at her feet. But it was necessary forthe story and there seemed no way out. Though he had never heardof Alfred Hitchcock at that time, Iyer felt like his famous line, ‘It’sonly a movie, Ingrid [Bergman]!’ And he agreed to do the scene. Helooked at KBS as a great fellow musician and the incarnation ofGoddess Saraswathi! Tandon was a happy man when the two fellat each other’s feet by turn!

Regretfully, ‘Nandanar’ failed at the box office. Kalki, in a famousreview in ‘Ananda Vikatan’, tore it to bits and pieces. He wrote thata buffalo which appeared in the movie acted better than everyoneelse!

For some uncomplimentary reasons, the film’s negative wasdestroyed in a mysterious fire. Today there is no trace of thishistoric film except a few stills, a few 78-rpm gramophone recordsof songs by Maharajapuram which are preserved by his descen-dents and some collectors. What remain still are fond but fast-fading memories of old-timers still around after seventy-plus longyears.

(His son Maharajapuram Santhanam told this writer that hisfather invested his income of Rs. 3000 from this movie in thepurchase of a house in Kumbakonam. Over the years, its valuegrew by leaps and bounds and more. “One of the few wise things myfather did in his life!”, Santhanam wisecracked with glee.)

The story of Nandanar, as immortalised by GopalakrishnaBharathi, was filmed thrice, each time with a few Carnatic musicgreats. Of all the silent and talking film versions of the GopalakrishnaBharathiar’s immortal musical ‘Nandan Charitram,’ the mostsuccessful one was the S. S. Vasan-Gemini Studios production of1943, ‘Nandanar’. The well-known classical Carnatic musicianand one of the pillars of the Thamizh Isai Movement, and sometimeTamil movie star, M. M. Dhandapani Desikar, played the lead roleof the ‘Lord Nataraja- devotee’. (All about the colourful DhandapaniDesikar, whom this writer knew well, later in a separate article!)

‘Murugadasa’ (Muthuswami Iyer), one of the pioneers of TamilCinema, directed ‘Nandanar’. He had begun his life as reporter inthe now defunct Madras city eveninger ‘ The Mail’, for which hewrote film reviews. Drawn to the medium of cinema, he gave up hisjob and promoted a short-lived monthly ‘Sound And Shadow’ in theearly 1930s. It was one of the early movie magazines in English inMadras and created much impact in those days.

With the oil marketing companies turning the heat on consumers having multiple domesticcooking gas connections, thousands of households in the city are discovering that refill cylinderscannot be booked unless they surrender the extra connections. “Refill supplies to all suchconnections have been stopped,” an Indane official said. This is the just one component of theexercise presumably aimed at equitable distribution of the 14.2 kg. cylinders, each of which carriesa subsidy of around Rs. 340. Multiple connections under the ‘same name, same address’ categoryhas been taken up now. If more than one connection exists in the name of an individual at thesame address, none are eligible for refills.

Customers who choose to retain a single cylinder connection will get to upgrade it to a doublebottle connection, the official explained.

Since the entire customer database is now online and can be accessed on a real time basis, thecompanies generated a list of such connections and blocked them. Letters have been sent askingthe customers to contact their distributors. The ‘one household, one LPG connection’ campaignof the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas says it is illegal for a household to hold more thanone connection.

“The oil marketing companies (IOC, BPC and HPC) are identifying consumers/householdsaddresses with multiple connections within and across companies. These connections will beblocked till all multiple connections are surrendered. The customers will have to approach thedistributor with his/her latest proof of identity and proof of address documents and any otherdocuments prescribed. They have to submit the Know Your Customer (KYC) form forreactivation of one domestic connection,” according to the campaign.

The next phase pertains to the ‘different name, same address’ category. “We have startedissuing letters for connections in the name of husband, wife or any other family member in thesame address,” said a Bharat Gas official.

This part is bound to pose problems. Many houses have several portions in which differentfamilies reside. As the address is the same in most of these connections, customers are bound tobe irritated when asked to explain their position. Agreeing that “there is some work to do andsome struggle too,” the BPC official said that the KYC details are similar to those sought by banks.

The companies are expected to shortly launch the next stage of the exercise to identify customerswho hold connections of more than one company. If any multiple connections are detected after

Even Cassandras would not say that Captain Lakshmi escaped betimes toavoid seeing the quinquennial change of tenancy at the Raisina Hill palaceresort when she called it a day before Pranab’s coronation.

At the age of 26, armed with a medical degree from our good old MMC,she took off to Singapore and then, (what the British government thought wastreason because Macaulay had, while drunk, included that Section in theI.P.C) joined the Indian National Army founded by Nethaji Subhas ChandraBose, to drive the whites into the Bay of Bengal or the Arabian Sea, the thirdchoice being the Indian Ocean.

Thanks to the ocean of love engulfing the globe through kindheartedPresident Truman, who presided over the liquidation of three hundredthousand citizens of Japan with the minimal use of two LITTLE BOYS (his petname for the inaugural atom bombs), the Second World War came to an endand the victors, including our British overlords, flexed their muscles, and ourgreat INA was erased. Bose allegedly died in a plane crash. Lakshmi dedicatedher life to her chosen line: medicine.

In 1946, when my mother decided that her sons should get better educationin Madras than the piffle that was available in Kannur, we became Madrasis.Captain Lakshmi seems to have divined my admiration for her as was provedwhen, one evening, a motorcade passed through Pycrofts Road and thisbeautiful lady, standing in an open truck, waved to all. But I chose to believethat she bestowed one special wave to me. She was so beautiful and brave andfresh from her own army and the war experience. Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, the heroine of Indian history, might have fought on the bloodied battle fieldswith swords, but this beautiful Doctor saved hundreds of lives from the war-front.

Violence was not the credo of the Swaminathan family. Lakshmi’s brotherGovind Swaminathan was one of the giants of the Madras Bar who, havingstudied law in England, spoke English better than Englishmen. He wasappointed Public Prosecutor even during the British rule, but he never soughtor got death sentence for the killers. He kept this record unblemished even inRepublic India when he was appointed Advocate General of Madras. To sucha family did Lakshmi belong and she led an innings of life full of service tohumanity and love for all.

After seeing her in the motorcade on Pycrofts Road in 1946, my youngerbrother Chandrakant (who art in heaven now) and I turned nationalistsand bought khadar kurtas, shorts and Gandhi caps and recorded it forposterity by getting a photo shoot at a Triplicane studio. It looks beautiful, thanks to Lakshmi, and still adorns the mantelpiece in my study room.
