Sharada Bezboruah’s Bezboruah’s passing away - Trib-ute by an old student

There are things in life which are inevitable but wefoolishly hope they will miss their dates with destiny, butdeath is notone of them, for the accountant is an infalliblebook keeper who looks for the best of the earthlings forheavenly duty.

That is how the killer, on a recruiting spree, fingered mybeautiful Professor of English and sent his grabbing minionsto Jorhat in Assam, from where she was shifted to Calcutta. The messenger of death acted as ordered.

When Prabhat phoned me, after the cremation, the sadnews of his mother’s passing away, the sense of loss hit mepersonally, for she was the lastlink with my student daysin Presidency College, Madras, where she was AssistantProfessor of English. It was my good fortune to be taught byher for 2 years from 1951. After I left college in 1953 andturned to the profession of law, in which English languageplays a prominent part, I used to silently thank her for mylove for English.

It was many years after I left Presidency College that Ilearnt that she had married a tea estate baron in Assamand settled there and was working as Professor in a Women’sCollege. An I.A.S. officer friend, K. J. M. Shetty, who knewherbrother, gave me her address in Jorhat, which is thegenesis of my promotion from studentdom to friendship ofthe entire Bezboruah family. My wife Lakshmi and I visitedthem in Calcutta where they have a homeand from therewe flew to their manorial home in Jorhat. We loved thesimple, good people we saw there. It was a trip full oflovewithout divisive forces or thoughts. Dr. Bezboruah, after abeautiful life, called it a dayand now my professor , whom welast met and dined with in Bangalore in June this year, hasquietly drifted away from us all with the message, “Watchout; this happens to all”

So be it!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, I am a resident of Jothi Ramalingam Street (WestMambalam) for the past 20 years. The road is in a very badcondition and gets slushy during rains. There are a number ofpotholes and the road has not been re-laid for many years. I havewritten several times to Chennai Corporation, but to no avail.

Also water has been overflowing from the hand pumps andstagnating on Pushpavathi Ammal Street near its junction withJothi Ramalingam Street for the past couple of weeks. I appealto the concerned authorities to take suitable action without anyfurther delay. – Arun Narayana Acharya, Jothi RamalingamStreet, West Mambalam; Ph: 72998 57656.

Jothi Ramalingam Street needs re-laying

Stray dog menaceSir, - It was about 5.30 p.m on Dec. 18. I was proceeding to Sai

Baba Temple on Jai Shankar Street, West Mambalam when astray dog pounced on me. Though I tried to ward it off it caughtmy hand in its mouth. I managed to escape but its teeth left amark on my hand. To play it safe, I rushed to a doctor and hadan anti-rabies shot which cost me Rs. 500.

The next day I tried to lodge a complaint with the ChennaiCorporation and was asked to contact phone 2667 0593. I wastold that action would be taken in 2 or 3 days. I wonder how manymore persons will be bitten before action is taken. R. Jagadeesan,13/41, Pushpavathi Ammal Street, West Mambalam

Link pedestrian crossing to stationSir, - There is an elevated pedestrian crossing

connecting Duraiswamy Road and Brindavan Street,West Mambalam. This may be linked to the northernend of Mambalam Railway Station by 4-ft steps orramps (one for entry & the other for exit). A railwaypersonnel may be posted to check tickets. (Enoughspace is available between the railway tracks).

These steps/ramps may be used by passengersalighting from south bound trains and commuters toreach Brindavan Street or Duraiswamy Road. Anumber of autos/share autos are available for pas-sengers. MTC buses also ply to Mylapore, Triplicaneand other areas. This arrangement will reduce over-crowding in Ranganathan Street and other streetsconnecting the railway station. S.R. Radha-krishnan.

Relaying sans milling causes problemsSir, - 61st Street branches off from 7th Avenue

which links West Mambalam and K. K. Nagar. 7th

Avenue is used by buses and other vehicles. It is relaidat regular intervals but without the top layer beingremoved first (milling) with the result all the sideroads/streets are now at a level lower than 7th Av-enue. As a consequence, even when there are lightshowers water from 7th Avenue flows into the sidestreets in the absence of stormwater drains or rainwater pits. Very narrow pavements on both sides arein a neglected state and have been converted intopublic toilets.

This years old problem was highlighted beforeCorporation authorities several times and wasbrought to the notice of the Mayor also when hevisited the area, but there has been no response sofar. While there are many other problems needingprompt action, street light posts which are in goodcondition are being replaced! I appeal to theCorporation to take action at least now. S.Krishnamoorthy
