Rules for 4-H Projects & Activities Listed below are the rules for project exhibits for the 2018-2019 school year. All projects displayed must have been made this school year and be the work of the 4-H member. (Parents are permitted to assist with the projects.) Be sure to put your name on each project. Please call (606) 432-2534 or 1-800-233-1390 if you have questions. You may also e-mail your 4-H Extension Agent, Novella Froman at [email protected]. *Denotes projects which are eligible for State Fair entry. 4-H members enrolled in the Art project may exhibit the following made during this school year. No paint by number paintings permitted. *Basket making Class 764—Make a basket using natural materials. This may be any size, shape or design; non-natural materials may be woven into the design. *Drawing Class 745—Exhibit 3 drawings using the contour drawing method. Class 746—Exhibit a drawing that shows a two point perspective. Class 747—Exhibit a drawing that fits in a circular shape. Class 748—Exhibit a drawing that with color pencils, the drawing needs to be blended. Class 749—Exhibit a pen and ink drawing of animals or other objects. Class 750—Rewrite the 4-H Pledge or a quote using Calligraphy. Class 751—Exhibit a cartoon drawing that shows motion. Drawings must consist of at least 3 blocks. *Fiber Art Class 752—Exhibit a 18” X 24” Applique mat using felted wool. Class 753—Use molds and shape Linter to form bowls. Enhance cotton w/ color pencils, threads, floss, or dried flowers. Class 754—Exhibit a natural fiber fabric using dyes and wax. Class 755—Exhibit a woven placemat that you have made using a lap loom. Class 756—Exhibit a loom basket out of several woven stitches made by stitching them into a circle. *Painting Class 727—Exhibit a painting using acrylic paint. Must be a still life that you have painted. Class 728—Exhibit a water color painting on water color paper. Use a variety of techniques. Class 729—Exhibit an acrylic painting in which you experiment with abstract design. Class 730—Exhibit a sand painting that you have completed using acrylic, sand and plywood or particle board; your painting should be 8” X 10” X 1/4” in size. Class 731—Exhibit a self portrait using acrylic or watercolor paints.

Class 732—Exhibit an acrylic or watercolor painting that captures human action. You can use vivid colors, lines, and texture when painting. Class 733– Exhibit an oil painting on canvas or canvas board . Class 734—Exhibit an oil color landscape. The painting should be on a 16” X 18” stretched and primed canvas board. These should show atmosphere and distance. PRINTING OR GRAPHICS *Class 735—Intaglio Collagraph–On 8 1/2’ x 11’’ paper. Create a collagraph block at least 6’’ wide and create any color print using intaglio printing method. Class 736—Blueprint paper print-Create a sun print at least 5 1/2” x 8’’using cyanotype or light/sun sensitive paper. Class 737—Etched Plexiglas-Create an original print using an etched Plexiglas plate. The print should be at least 5 1/2” x 8 1/2’’. Use the intaglio method of printing. Class 738—Wax Resist Print - Exhibit a detailed design using the wax resist method of printing. Class 739—Exhibit 2 inner tube tire prints that you have made. The inner tube can be glued to a wood block to make a stamp. Class 740—Exhibit 2 linoleum prints using linoleum block on paper. Class 741—Hand drawn photograph-Draw a negative on frosted acetate, then print onto photographic 8” x 10’’ paper as a positive, using photographic process. *Class 742—Heritage Crafts– Exhibit two homemade ornaments that you have made. Class 744—Computer Drawing: Explore the use of computer tools to doodle, draw and copy images. Print out each design showing the use of various tools. NATURE CRAFTS - Items made from natural materials. Examples are seed pictures, wreaths of natural material, hand carved native materials or decorative gourds. No kits allowed. POSTERS - 4-H members in the poster project should display posters as outlined be-low. Letters may be pre-cut or hand rendered. Graphics may be attached. Posters should be 16” x 22” in size. Posters I - Exhibit two posters that you have designed (according to the guidelines on page 6). One poster should be on 4-H, 4-H History or one of your own choice. PUPPETRY - 4-H members enrolled in the project should complete the following: Puppetry I - Exhibit three puppets as described in the project leaflet on pages 1, 2, & 3. Neatness and usefulness are important. Other types of puppets may be exhibited. Weaving – Exhibit one or more items that you have woven using yarn, or fabric scraps. You may use the looms described in the project book. This may include placemats, pot holders (2), small wall hangings, etc. *Sculpting Class 757—Exhibit a container you have made from clay. This may be self-hardening clay or require firing. Class 758—Exhibit a head with facial features you have sculpted out of clay. Class 759—Create a mask out of clay to portray feelings. Class 760—Exhibit a textured sculpture using corrugated cardboard stacked and glued together. Class 761—Exhibit a free standing sculpture using wire and nylon cloth. Class 762—Exhibit a form that you have carved out of plaster of Paris block. This should have curve in and curve out surfaces. Babysitting I– Make a babysitting kit discussed in the project book. Included in

this bag should be one completed recipe for play dough or finger paint, or a pup-pet. Also include games and stories you plan to use when babysitting. Complete and exhibit your babysitting book. Babysitting II– Exhibit a babysitting kit, two complete recipes, two different pup-pets described in project book, plus games and stories you plan to use while babysitting. Complete and exhibit your babysitting book. BICYCLE: 4-H members enrolled in bicycle projects should exhibit the following: Bicycle I - Complete the project book. Also, make a 14 x 22 inch chart with a drawing of your bicycle. Label the parts of your bike. Or you may make a poster on bike safety. Bicycle II - Write a story about your bicycle activities, telling the things you have done to maintain the bike. Make a poster showing the items serviced. Bicycle III - Write a story about your bicycle activities. On a 14 x 22 inch poster, draw a bike that you have personalized as discussed in the project book. (Include two photographs - one of your bicycle before it is personalized and one after it is personalized.) CAT PROJECT - Neatly fill out booklet and do a 14” x 22” poster on cat breeds or cat care. Include a photograph of your cat. CHICKEN PROJECT– 1. Exhibit a neatly completed project book. 2. Create a poster on different breeds of chickens. 3. Paste a picture of a chick you incubated. COAL SCIENCE - You may exhibit two of the following that has been made dur-ing the 2018-2019 school year. 1) Exhibit a poster on ways to use coal. 2) Ex-hibit a neatly completed project book. 3) Exhibit a coal-crystal garden. 4) Coal Art - Exhibit an item you have made using coal.

*COOKING: 4-H members enrolled in foods projects may bring exhibits to the rally to be judged and awarded ribbons. All exhibits should be placed on paper plates, covered with a storage bag or plastic wrap and labeled. You may enter one of the following exhibits, according to the unit in which you are enrolled. (Only items listed will be judged.) Be sure the food is cool before wrapping it.

*Unit I - You may exhibit one of the following: four pieces of coffee cake with topping, four oatmeal drop cookies, four oatmeal muffins or three granola bars.

*Unit 2 - You may exhibit one of the following: four rolled biscuits, four cheese muffins, oatmeal muffins, or four snickerdoodle cookies.

*Unit 3 - You may exhibit one of the following: four scones, (raisins may be sub-stituted for cranberries), one 8” or 9” rich chocolate cake (no icing), one 8” or 9” layer carrot or zucchini cake (no icing), four cinnamon twists (no icing) or four soft pretzels.

*Unit 4 - You may complete one of the following: basic chiffon cake, one whole dou-ble crusted apple pie, one loaf of oatmeal bread, one loaf honey whole wheat bread made in a bread machine, or eight pieces classic chocolate fudge. (no nuts please.) BAKE SHOP - Exhibit six cookies from the project book. You may exhibit the Hay-stacks, Magic Bars, Chocolate Oaties, Chocolate Chip or Pumpkin Cookies. DOG PROJECT: Exhibit the completed project book, (include a picture of your dog) and a poster on dogs. This poster should be no smaller than 20” x 30” and no larger than 24” x 30”; use matt board or foam core board, no poster board is allowed. Cop-yrighted characters are not permitted. This poster should promote a breed, showing/grooming/caring for your dog, dog health, nutrition, and breed characteristics. Post-ers should be simple and focus on one message to tell your story of your dog poster theme. No 3 dimensional posters are permitted. *ELECTRIC: 4-H members enrolled in electric project may bring one or more items they have made to the Community Fair and place them on exhibit, following the guidelines listed below. Please label each item. Unit I Magic of Electricity (All exhibits must be DC powered.) Class 645 Battery powered series and parallel circuits (Circuits must include both series and parallel, a simple switch and can be no more than 9 volts). 646 Homemade Galvanometer (Must be able to detect the presence of an electrical current). Class 647 Electromagnetic circuits (Must be a working electromagnet with a simple switch and can be no more than 9 volts). Class 648 Simple homemade DC motor (Rotor must turn under its own power). Unit II Investigating Electric (All exhibits must be DC powered.) Class 649 Battery powered series or parallel circuit (circuit may be either series or parallel, must contain either a momentary and /or three way switch, a circuit diagram with explanation and can be no more than 9 volts). Class 650 An original design soldered circuit project (Circuit must contain an on/off switch, a motion tilt activated switch, a light and sound producing device and must be powered by 9 volts. All connections in the circuit must be soldered and a circuit dia-gram with explanation must be included). Electricity III Wired for Power Class 651 Exhibit a display of wire sizes and types with description and example of usage (display must contain at least 12 different examples). Class 652 Simple household or farm use circuit according to the directions in the project book. Circuit must be mounted on a sturdy mounting surface and be free standing. It should also contain one single pole switch controlling one electrical load device. Wiring should be done with RomeX NM-B 12 gauge wire and clamped or stapled appropriately. Include an explanation.

Class 653 Exhibit a complex household or farm use circuit according to the directions in the project book. Circuit must contain at least 2 three way switches and may also contain a four way switch, controlling one electrical load device. Circuit should be mounted on a sturdy mounting surface, be free standing, and include a working duplex outlet. A circuit diagram with explanation must be included. Class 654 Table, desk, vanity or floor lamp (any purpose – original design only); pop can lamp kits will be disqualified. Class 655: Basic electronic circuits without solid state components from project book. Class 656: Basic electronic circuits with solid state components from a kit. Class 657— Basic electronic circuits with solid state components; original circuit design must include circuit diagram and explanation. Class 658— Wind or solar powered energy project from a kit. Class 659—Wind or solar powered energy project from an original design. ENERGY - 4-H members enrolled in energy projects are required to do the following in order to exhibit an energy project at the 4-H Fair. Make a poster on the theme of “Ways to Conserve Energy in My Home or Community”; this should be 14 x 22 inches (one half sheet standard poster board). Name, school and grade of 4-H members should be on back of poster. (*Poster is eligible for the Kentucky State Fair.) Energy I– Exhibit a poster on energy conservation and include a neatly completed project book in one color ink or pencil. Energy II– Exhibit a poster on energy conservation and include a neatly completed project book. Energy III– Exhibit a poster on energy conservation and include a neatly completed project book. *NATURAL RESOURCES/ECOLOGY: (Pins and boxes may be purchased from the Extension Office.) All 4-H members who are enrolled in the entomology project may exhibit their insect collections as follows: * Class 687A Exhibit one or two 9” x 13” cardboard collection boxes with at least 25 insects from at least four orders, mounted and labeled according to directions in the project book. All specimens must have date and place found. Identification beyond order not necessary. Maximum 50 insects. *CLASS 687 B Exhibit 25 insects photographs from at least four orders. All insects should be identified, identification beyond order not necessary. Images should be submitted using a USB memory device. *CLASS 688 - Exhibit two 9” x 13” cardboard collection boxes with at least 50 insects from eight orders. Half of the insects should be identified with a common name. Maximum 100 insects. *CLASS 689 - Exhibit two –three 9” x 13” cardboard collection boxes with 100 insects from at least 10 orders. Maximum 150 insects. HONEY CLASS 692– Exhibit two one pound glass Queenline or Classic jars of white extracted honey.

CLASS 693-Exhibit two one pound glass Queenline or Classic jars of amber extracted honey. FLOWER ARRANGING - Exhibit a silk or dried flower arrangement that you have made using the designs and information in the project book. FOOD PRESERVATION - 1) Dry 12 dried apple slices and put in a zipped bag. 2) One pint of dill pickles 3) One pint of zesty salsa 4) 1/2 pint of cooked strawberry jam or 5) One pint of green beans *-FORESTRY I Exhibit one of the following: Class 703- Collection of 10 leaves representing 10 forest trees found in Kentucky. Instructions in 4-H forestry project book Activity #1. Class 704 - Leaf Print Collection– Collect and print 10 leaves representing 10 forest trees found in Kentucky. Instructions in 4-H forestry project book Activity #3. FORESTRY II—Class 705 (second year) Exhibit a collection of 20 leaves representing 20 forest trees found in Kentucky. Activity #1 in forestry unit 1 project book. *GEOLOGY: 4-H members enrolled in the geology projects may exhibit a collection that they have arranged during the school year. Each specimen must be correctly identified and labeled. Labels are available through the Cooperative Extension Service Office (or the 4-H Office). (Fossils and rocks may be mixed.) Mount in a 16x20 box with Plexiglas cover that can be removed for judging. *Class 715 - Exhibit a collection of 15 fossils or 15 rocks and minerals. Up to 20 specimens will be accepted. Should be displayed in a box that is no less than 16” x 20”. *Class 716 - A collection consisting of 25 specimens of rocks and minerals and fossils that you have correctly identified and displayed. Twelve may be from previous years. (no more than two boxes) *Class 717 - A collection consisting of 35 specimens (no more than two boxes). Seventeen may be from previous years. GOAT PROJECT– Exhibit a neatly completed project book and a poster with pictures of goats on it. *HOME ENVIRONMENT: *Home Environment I - 4-H members enrolled in this project may exhibit one of the following items from the Exploring your Home project book: Class 887 Color Collage- This must be attached to a mat or foam core board. Collage can be made of a collection of objects such as paper, carpet, fabric or other materials. Class 888 Texture Collage or Rubbing- Textured items or rubbing of textured items artistically arranged and glued to a mat or foam core board.

Class 889—Exhibit a small wood object with a natural finish such as tung oil or penetrating seal applied to small wood object. Examples include bowl, tray, cutting board, game board, and small box. Judging will be on the finish not the construction. Do not paint or stain these items. Class 890— Simple, small cloth item for the home. Examples include knotted pillow, draped valance, decorative pillow, tablecloth, laundry bag, place mat, foot stool with a seat made of woven fabric, fabric applied to an item such a s a box, plate or lampshade, and placemats with accompanying photo showing end result. May or may not use a sewing machine. Purses, tote bags, backpacks and duffle bags are not accepted in this class. Class 891-Wastebasket that you have decorated to coordinate with your room. Class 892 -Bulletin board-If it is to be hung on a wall, it must be ready to hang with appropriate hardware attached. *Home Environment II - 4-H members enrolled in this project may exhibit one of the following items from Living with Others project book: Class 893-Decorative item for the home & photo-Create decorative item for the home and include a photo showing how the item fits into the home’s décor. Class 894-A refinished wood item with straight lines with little or no carving or turnings. This item might be a small footstool, a child’s furniture, a small box, picture frame, book shelves or a plant stand. Exhibit should include before and after pictures. Class 895- Simple, small cloth item using a sewing machine. *Home Environment III - Exhibit one of the following from Where I Live project book: Class 897-Accessory for the home with description, sketch, or photo to show how the accessory is used in the home and how the design and colors fit in with the other furnishings and color used in the home. Examples include stitchery or appliqué wall hanging, latch hook items, pillow with applied design (stitchery, appliqué or other media), rug, picture in appropriate frame and ready to hang. Class 898-Exhibit a table setting to include centerpiece, plate, glass, cup, saucer and table linen. It should be planned around a theme or event chosen by 4-H member. This exhibit will require two parts. Second, include a diagram or photo how it will be used in the home. No silverware, please Class 899-Restore or refinish a wood item or recycle a low cost item. Include a before picture with your exhibit, if possible to let other people know what the item looked like before you refinished or recycled it. (Examples: rocker, table, large chair or chest) Class 900- Exhibit a old or discarded item made useful in a new way as a home accessory. HORSE There are many ways that you can exhibit projects concerning horses. Listed below are these project. HORSE CRAFTS: 4-H members may exhibit their talent by exhibiting horse craft items. You may exhibit at least one neatly completed item in the following. Art Kit—exhibit a completed art kit that is related to horses; this should be neatly completed. Art Non-Kit– exhibit a piece of art that you have completed related to horses. Clothing– Exhibit a piece of clothing that you have made that is related to or displays horses. Horse Equipment– Exhibit a piece of equipment that you have made for your horse. Horse for the Non-horse Owner - Exhibit a neatly completed project book. All blanks should be completed. Horse Photography Single - Exhibit a 8”x10” photograph related to horses. Mount this on a poster board (10’’x16’’). Horse Photography Series - Exhibit a series of five photographs related to horses; these photographs should be 3½”x 5” and mounted on poster board 16”x20”. Horse Project - Exhibit the neatly completed project book on your horse. All blanks should be completed. Horse Speech - Present a speech on horses. This speech should be three to five minutes in length. LEADERSHIP/CITIZENSHIP- Complete all 12 activities in project book. Take part in two learning experiences. Become involved in at least two Leadership/Citizenship activities. Write a project summary. *Heritage Arts-

Class 764-Basket making-Exhibit a basket you have made. It must be made of natural materials. Other non-natural items may be woven into the basket.

Class 765-Exihibit one piece of jewelry you have made. No kits or pony beads allowed. Beads must be glass, clay or wooden. Examples: earrings and necklace, or bracelet and necklace, etc.

ROBOTICS II: Design and make a Clip mobile (p. 20), a Can-Can Robot (p. 40), a Robot Rover (p. 49), a Gear Train (p. 55), or an Es-Car-Go (p. 59), neatly complete the project book. ROCKETRY PROJECT Make a single stage model rocket, take a picture of the completed rocket and put it in the book, sign the safety code, complete the record sheet book, the quiz , the story and exhibit these items at the 4-H Fair. SEWING *Unit I Let’s Learn to Sew - Exhibit must be made of woven fabric and include straight machine stitching and a casing with a machine stitched hem. BE SURE TO FINISH THE SEAMS. Use a straight stitch or pinking shears to finish the seams. Class 790A-Clothing Option: Shorts, pants, or skirt with casing waistline (elastic and/or drawstring). Class 790B- Non-Clothing Option: Drawstring tote bag, laundry bag, backpack or tote bag with fabric handles. Ages 9-13 *Unit II – Let’s Get to the Bottom Exhibit must be made from woven fabric and must have enclosed seams, interfacing, and zipper. Class 791 Clothing Option: Skirt, shorts or pants with zipper and a waistband or facing. Class 792 Non Clothing Option: purse or garment bag, tote bag, gym bag with zipper (14” or longer) and self-fabric straps or handles.

WOODCRAFT: 674 Level 1, made from a kit. Simple items which have pre-cut and pre-drilled parts and youth demonstrate knowledge of assembly, selection and use of fasteners (nails, screws and/or glue), sanding techniques, and appropriate finishes (Example: small bird house, non-hopper bird feeder). No puzzles. 675 Level 1, NOT from a kit. Simple constructed wood item showing knowledge of hand tools, wood selection, cutting, drilling, use of fasteners (nails, screws and/or glue), sanding techniques, and appropriate finishes, (such as, but not limited to napkin holder, letter holder, simple picture frame, wire wiggly, towel holder, serving tray, jewelry box, small flag holder, 4-H book ends, airplane, hurricane lamp, trivet (pot holder), etc.) 676 Level 2, made from a kit, no puzzles. More elaborate items which require cutting, drilling and youth demonstrate knowledge of selection and skill in use of fasteners (nails, screws and/or glue), sanding techniques, and appropriate finishes (Example: but not limited to pine wood car, large bird house, jewelry box, tool tray). 677 Level 2, NOT from a kit. More elaborate items that demonstrate a mastered skill with hand tools, basic knowledge of power hand tools, fastening options, appropriate surface preparations, and finish applications, (such as puzzle, foot stool, revolving tie rack, 4-H key holder, cutting board, book rack, serving dish shelf, sawhorse, hopper type bird feeder, etc.) 678 Level 3, NOT from a kit. Items showing a more advanced knowledge of power tools, expertise in cutting, fitting, surface preparation, attention to fastening details, and finish application, (such as a multi-purpose box, corner shelf, book shelf or laminated wood projects, garden bench, planting box, nail and tool box, shop tool rack & shelf, etc.) This exhibit is to be made up of two parts: 1) the item and 2) a folder containing photographic documentation of the steps taken in order to complete this exhibit. 679 Level 4, NO kits. Exhibits with a "furniture" quality finish, showing an understanding of all woodworking techniques learned in previous levels. Items showing a mastery of joint construction and use of special woods, and finishes. (Examples, checker board room divider, coffee table, end table, chest of drawers, gun rack or cabinet, etc.). PUBLIC SPEAKING April 23rd @ the Pike County Extension Office

Any boy or girl age 9-19 (must have passed their 9th birthday but have not passed their 19th birthday as of January 1 of the current program year) may participate in the 4-H Public Speaking (Talk Program) on a county basis. SENIORS must have passed their 14th birthday but not their 19th birthday as of January 1 of the current year. Junior category is judged in the 9, 10, 11, 12 & 13 year old category; the age the 4-H member is as of January 1, of 2019 is the age 4-H members will be placed for competition. Senior young men and women will be judged in the 14, 15 and 16-19 year old category; the age the 4-H member is of January 1, 2019 is the age 4-H members will be placed for competition. 1. Junior speeches should be three to five minutes in length. 2. Senior speeches should be five to seven minutes in length.

3. A participant may secure assistance from anyone he or she chooses in writing and preparing a speech.

4. Note cards may be used.

Speakers should do the following: A. Use good sentence structure, pronounce words clearly and correctly. Exercise good voice control. B. Dress neatly, smile, stand quietly and have good posture. C. The speech should be logical. D. Learn the speech well enough to speak with confidence. E. Speak to the audience. F. Never say thank you at the end. G. No visual aids will be used in the Kentucky 4-H Public Speaking (Talk Meet). Costumes (special outfits) and/or electronic equipment are considered visual aids. H. The use of note cards is optional. Points will not be added or subtracted for the use of note cards unless the speaker uses them in a distracting manner. I. Dramatic readings, dramatic monologues and recitation of poems (as the entire speech) including web based information will not be accepted in the Public Speaking (4-H Talk Meet). Excessive or distracting body or hand gestures are unacceptable. These distractions will be counted against participant in the scoring section. J. The contestant will be introduced by name, and subject (title) by the room host when she/he will present their talk. Talk should not include the speaker's name or residence; however there will be no penalty if name, county, and subject (title) are used during the talk.

DEMONSTRATION

Junior Demonstrations: Any member age 9-13 may compete in Junior Demonstrations as per their age determined on January 1st of the year in which the state contest is held. Senior Demonstrations: Any member age 14-19 may participate in Senior Demonstration (must have passed their 14th birthday but have not passed their 19th birthday as of January1st of the year in which the state their event contest is held). 1) Time limit for project demonstrations will be 5-15 minutes. (INCLUDING BREADS) Demonstrations going under or over time will be assessed a 3 point penalty from their overall final score and be given a blue, red or white ribbon and WILL be eligible for Champion placement. 2) A participant may have help with practicing the demonstration or speech. Preparation may include practicing in front of peers, club leaders, etc. At the SENIOR LEVEL, the 4-H’er is expected to demonstrate original work – choosing a topic, researching it and writing their own speech or demonstration. The internet may be used as a reference source but NOT as a source for a non-original speech or demonstration. 3) Team demonstrations ARE permitted. They will follow the same rules and regulations of the single participant demonstrations. Two (2) 4-H members will comprise a team. Each person must have a significant speaking and presentation portion. 4) A 4-H’er need not be enrolled in a project to give a demonstration; however, they should be encouraged to use demonstrations as an educational tool in their project area. 5) Weapons of any sort cannot be brought into the building or on the grounds of school or university property. This includes firearms, bullets, bows and arrows. Mockups, models and charts must be used instead. Models cannot look like an actual gun, bow or other firearm. DEMONSTRATION CATEGORIES - Junior (9-13) and Senior (14-18) Category selection should be based on the primary purpose of the demonstration. It is suggested that demonstrations that do not clearly fit into one category be modified to include information and material relative to the selected category. ANIMAL SCIENCE – to include information on selection, care and feeding of animals,

financial records, operations and animal products for small or large animals. BREAD – to include preparation, skills and creativity in using yeast or quick breads (such as

cornmeal, biscuits or fruit/nut breads) as part of family meals or snacks. Any recipe labeled as a quick bread or yeast bread is permissible. Please submit a copy of the recipe on day of event.

CLOTHING/SEWING – to include construction, techniques, wardrobe selection and planning (color, design accessories, appropriate dress for various occasions) selection, use or care of clothing related equipment, care of clothing, posture as it relates to fit. Fibers, fabrics, and textile related topics.

CRAFTS & PHOTOGRAPHY --to include crewel, decoupage, needlepoint, candle making, macramé, scrap booking, embroidery, quilting, silk screen, batik, block print, corn-shuck flowers, ceramics, jewelry making and similar topics. This category also includes demonstrations related to photography such as picture taking, composition, framing or scrapbooking.

HEALTH – to include information on physical and mental fitness, prevention and control of disease and parasites, grooming, desirable health practices and attitudes for people, families and communities. Also posture as related to physical or mental health. (CPR demonstrations should be done in SAFETY)

HOME ENVIRONMENT AND MANAGEMENT – to include topics based on information in the 4-H Home Environment projects or Home Economics leaflets in home furnishings and skills in managing personal and family resources, care and use of household furnishings. May include topics related to babysitting if the topic is not substantively related to another category.

HORTICULTURE – management practices, selection and production of fruits, vegetables and flowers, landscaping and care of lawn including use of trees, shrubs, flowers, and house plants.

FOODS – to include preparation skills and creativity in using foods for meals and snacks (excluding breads). Please submit a copy of the recipe on day of event.

PERFORMING ARTS -all demonstrations related to the performing arts including theatre, dance, musical instruments and musical performance.

PRESENTATION SOFTWARE – all demonstrations using presentation software and projection equipment (i.e. PowerPoint) should be placed in this category regardless of topic. Please bring the presentation on media that can be transferred to another computer (i.e. CD or portable drive).

SAFETY – to include the use and care of any equipment to prevent accidents (including storage of fuels, chemicals and tools), removing hazards, safety inspections. All first aid and CPR demonstrations are in this category.

SCIENCE AND NATURAL RESOURCES – includes agronomy, entomology, and natural resources. Includes soils, seeds, conservation practices, geology, weather, and fish/wildlife. This includes topics related to the natural sciences. This category can include science-fair type experiments related to these topics.

SCIENCE, ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY – to include all topics relative to the physical sciences, engineering and technology. This includes, but is not limited to, demonstrations related to farm equipment, automobiles, electricity, construction, biotechnology, aerospace, rocketry, woodcraft and the care or construction of computers [may NOT use computer projection equipment in place of posters]. This category can include science-fair type experiments related to these topics.

SHOOTING SPORTS – includes proper care and cleaning of equipment, safety, sighting alignment and shooting techniques, selecting equipment and ammunition. Weapons of any sort can not be brought into the building or on the grounds of school or university property. This includes firearms, bullets, bows and arrows. Mockups, models and charts must be used instead. Models cannot look like an actual gun, bow or other firearm.

Team Demonstrations – any demonstration (regardless of topic) conducted by two (2) 4-H members of the same age category (i.e. either juniors or both seniors). Each participant must have a significant speaking AND presentation role in the demonstration. Youth may participate in either the individual demonstrations OR the team demonstration category. They may NOT do both.

MOCK JOB INTERVIEWS -Seniors (14-18) only. Resumes are not currently required, but are encouraged. Contestants will be applying for a sales associate position at a mall. The interview will be conducted in a private room with two judges and should last 8 – 10 minutes.

VARIETY SHOW RULES 1. Only one person other than 4-H participants, such as a pianist, may accompany the act. 2. Only 4-H participants may appear on the stage during the act. 3. Specialty acts shall consist of four 4-H participants or fewer and have a time limit of four minutes. 4. The time limit for the club act is eight minutes. 5.
