From the Principal Here we are, already in the last week of Term 3 - this year is flying by! Reading the reports in this newsletter from each grade showing what they’ve been doing proves that the old saying, time flies when you’re having fun, must be true. What a wide range of rich learning opportunities our students have enjoyed this term, including excursions, incursions, special science activities, environmental education, sport, technology and life education, alongside rigorous learning in English and Mathematics. The recent school community event, Poetry around the Campfire, was a huge success. Lots of people came along and enjoyed the roaring fire, hot soup and a wide variety of poetry. Thank you to Mrs Annette Murphy-Haste for organising the event and inspiring a love of poetry, and thanks also to the parents who brought along the delicious soup. Wishing you all a very happy holiday, see you back at school on Tuesday 23 July Sibling Enrolments If you have a child who will be starting school next year, please let the office know as soon as possible. This is the time of year when we need to have a good idea of projected numbers so that we can plan for the number of teachers needed, classroom space and furniture. Celebrating Public Education – Around the World in a Day! We are busy planning an exciting school community whole day event that will take place on Thursday 15 August. This will celebrate public education and the rich multicultural diversity that we value so highly in our school. Each classroom will represent a different country and children will be issued with ‘passports’ so that they can travel around the world throughout the day, enjoying games and activities related to the different countries. There will also be performances in the hall and a special lunch. Please put the date in your diary as we are hoping that many of you will be able to join us from lunchtime onwards. Staff Change This is Ms Gina Wright’s last week at Brookvale PS. Gina has been teaching 3T this term and has done a great job. We thank her for her time at Brookvale and wish her all the best in her future endeavours. Replacing Gina will be Miss Kelsey Britton. We are looking forward to welcoming Kelsey to our teaching team. Reports This week you will have received your child’s Semester 1 report. Those of you with children in Years 1-6 will notice that the format has changed to include reporting on attainment in specific syllabus outcomes and learning targets in English and Mathematics. Early next term we will survey all parents to get your feedback on the new format.

What a busy end of term we have had in Kindy. In Maths we have been learning about time on digital and analogue clocks. We have been practising our addition and subtraction skills by playing fun learning activities that really help us in our learning. This term we have been lucky enough to have the coaches from Flip Sport teach us. They have been teaching us all sorts of exciting activities and techniques from different sports such as how to hit a cricket ball, stopping a soccer ball with our foot, swinging a bat for t-ball and dribbling a basketball. We also had a very special visit from Healthy Harold to teach us about living a healthy lifestyle. This term during Science we have been looking at the topic ‘Weather in my World’ which looks at different types of weather. We have been doing lots of fun experiments to further our knowledge on this topic. We have made wind socks to test the wind and we have also conducted an experiment in which we made rain, which was very exciting! Mrs Richardson, Miss Goodearl, Mr Hurley and Mrs Dixon

This term in Year 1, we have been so engaged with our learning that it has spilled out into our local environment, the Ku-Ring-Gai Wildflower Garden! On Wednesday 19th June all Year 1 students (and some Kindy visitors), teachers and parent volunteers hopped on the bus from school to the Wildflower Garden. We learnt all about various animal and insect habitats, adaptations, features and characteristics, how we can and need to look after our environment and participated in many various activities. These included investigating the local wetlands for mini-beasts, learning about various wildlife and imagining what the environment might be like when dinosaurs roamed as we walked through a fern forest. The students were able to meet ducks, fish, lizards, turtles, and even a magical visit from a local wallaby! The students had an amazing time and learnt lots. What an adventure…on to the next one! See you in the playground! Ms Lohr, Mr Murray and Mrs Richardson

We are continuing to enjoy our interesting activities in our STEAM unit of work as well as in English and Maths. We are building upon our knowledge of water by looking at materials that float or sink and performing interesting experiments to prove our ideas. We have been lucky enough to have been involved in a Maths lesson study project with Mrs McCredie, who along with the teachers, helped us develop our mathematical language and how to work with our learning partners. Have a look at some of the things we have been doing in Year 2 this term

Sea Snake Shedding its skin Excellent at swimming Attacking people Super at killing people Nibbling people Amazing at scaring people Killing their prey Extraordinary at shedding their skin Zara Cleary

Year 3 has certainty been busy last few weeks. We participated in the All Systems Go, part of the Life Education program. We virtually travelled through the human body and discovered how magnificent the human body really is. We learnt about the functions of various body systems and how to keep these systems working well. The highlight was meeting Healthy Harold, who is a very cheeky giraffe!

In English, we are learning to write informative texts. We are using our research skills to acquire information in particular facts about Australia. We are so lucky to live in a wonderful country with spectacular attractions, unique native animals and such a small population compared to other countries around the world! We are using this information to form our structural information reports. In Maths, we further investigated our understanding in the data strand. Our data was represented by the graphs we created. We made interpretations and evaluated our graphs by determining the most popular and least popular car colour. You would not believe it, the most popular car colour is grey!

Year 4 and 5 students have been undertaking a number of interesting and exciting Science experiments this term. In one experiment they predicted when different types of salt (rock, Epsom or table) were dissolved in water which would cause crystals to grow. Some students added food colour and we are now awaiting the results of this experiment. In another experiment, students predicted whether various items (coin, foil, foam, pencil, paddle pop sticks) would float or sink and why. Using the results of this experiment, they built a boat and tested if it floated. When our resident scientist, David Morgan-Mar visited, the students were able to ask a number of interesting questions about these experiments as well as other Science questions.

Mr Gray, Miss Kovacs and Mrs Roberts

Year 6 has been working hard in all areas of their learning and have used real world examples to collect data. Using Microsoft Excel, our class has transferred the data into a spreadsheet and used formulae to calculate the decimal and percentage values. We then converted this data into a graph to provide a visual representation of our findings. In English, we have been researching information about Australia using reliable sources e.g. government websites. We have been collating facts and data to produce detailed information reports. In Week 8 we received our Year 6 jerseys. We are very proud to be wearing our new Year 6 jerseys at Brookvale Public School.

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition

In Week 8, our school hosted the local finals of the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition. Representing our school were Inari Duncan and Mya Williams in the Years 3 and 4 section and Aysha Hogan and Zahia Aili in the Years 5 and 6 section. The four students gave informative and interesting prepared speeches on a multicultural topic. They were then given five minutes to prepare a speech on a set topic and deliver the speech immediately. We are so proud of them all. They did a fantastic job of representing the school. Well done Zahia, Aysha, Inari and Mya! Mrs Roberts, Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition Coordinator

Library News – Poetry Around The Campfire Night

While the night was dark and cold, the soup was delicious, the fire was warm and the atmosphere was friendly (and dry). We heard about Jumblies, treats from Roald Dahl and J.K. Rowling, several Australian classics, some wonderful duos, a mournful dong, an ode to teachers, A.A. Milne, some Silverstein favourites and also original poems written by Brookvale children. Thank you to our soup makers, our poets and our Brookvale community for coming along. More photos are on display in the library.
