Principal’s NewsDear Parents and Friends of St
John’s,
Last week, I attended our Principal’s
Forum in Toowoomba. It was
four days of very extensive work,
collaboration and reflection. Our
Diocese under the leadership of Dr
Pat Coughlan is strategic, forward
thinking and in a positive way,
demanding. The two main pillars
that underpin all we do from a Diocesan and school level
are to have an expert teacher in every classroom to optimise
student learning and that all involved in Catholic Education
come to know Jesus in a personal way. As a community,
we need to work together for the best possible outcomes
for our students, to prepare them for a life where they can
contribute to society but also do this in a positive manner.
Hope is one of the most important attitudes that we need to

have to experience success in life. I could not help reflecting
on this, as I watched the lead up to the Cox Plate and
experienced the positive vibe as the wonderful mare Winx,
took her wins to 22 straight. The unity that we experience
when we share hope or a journey is what binds us together
as a community.
We will be in November and the countdown to Christmas by
the end of the week. Life begins to become a lot busier so
make sure your families keep to routines and your children
get enough sleep. Have a great week and God Bless.

Prep MathsThis term in Maths, the Prep
students are working on
consolidating the knowledge
and skills learnt throughout the
year. We have been counting
forwards and backwards from
given numbers to 100, reviewing
simple and complex patterns and
sequencing days of the week.
We have also used tally marks to
answer questions of the week and
Year Five HASSThis term, we have been learning
about the Gold Rush era and what
it meant to have ‘Gold Fever’. The
students participated in their own
classroom Gold Rush in which they
had to find the gold hidden around
the room; they had to be careful to
keep their gold as troopers could
take it if they didn’t have a licence.
They have been discovering how
the Gold Rush started, the people
involved in it and how it began to
change Australia. The students
then discussed the results.
Finally, the Preps have enjoyed
learning about addition and
subtraction using lots of hands on
objects and now know that when
you subtract with a pirate you’ll
find the difference!
Kaylene KeleherPrep Teacher
explored what it was like to live on
the goldfields and what it would
have been like for the people who
migrated here during the 1850s.
They will be starting to research
the Gold Rush further to create
their poster presentations for our
major assessment due later this
term.
Danielle KingYear Five Teacher
This term, students have been
exploring the idea of ‘true lies’ in film.
More specifically, they have been
examining the documentary genre,
looking at how documentaries are
constructed, how they represent
facts and opinions and how the
making of a documentary can
change the nature of the subject of
that documentary. As part of this
process, students have engaged
with several feature-length
documentaries and explored how
a seemingly objective text type
can be carefully constructed to
incorporate and perpetuate bias.
Throughout this unit, students
have been actively encouraged to
think critically and draw their own
conclusions.

St John’s School Youth Mass
On Saturday night, a number of our
students came along to the All Saints
Parish Youth Mass and contributed in
every aspect of the Mass. Parishioners
are always so pleased to see our youth
being involved – they delivered the
readings, the welcoming, the Offertory,
the Prayers of the Faithful, the music
and were Communion ministers. Our
special thanks go to Year ten students,
Daniel Padbury and Martin Kenna,
who did a fantastic job supporting our
singers with their amazing guitar skills.
The night ended with KFC (not pizzas!),
drinks and some socialising in the Justin
King Centre.
Thank you to everyone who helped
with the evening. You did yourselves
proud once again; your team work
and commitment in the lead up to
the Mass was commendable and
your enthusiasm on the night was
appreciated by all.
Year Six Science
Simple Science in our ‘Kitchen
Chemistry’ Unit
Do you ever wonder what
makes things change and what
affects how fast they
change? Or why some
things burn more
fiercely, rust more
quickly or smell more
strongly? Throughout
the past few weeks,
Year Six students have
been exploring how
substances change
and why they change. We have
explored melting, evaporating,
dissolving and reacting.
Through hands-on activities
and investigations, we have
developed an understanding of
the factors that influence the rate
of change. We have identified
physical and chemical changes
in everyday
materials. Some of
the activities have
included making
butter and ice-
cream, watching
detergent mix
with milk and food
colouring, the
effects of mixing
vinegar and bi-carbonate of soda
soda to blow up a balloon, and
examining how and why a nail
may go rusty.

MARIAN HOUSE REPORT
Hello Mighty Marians and congratulations on making it to the last term of the year! With a short and sharp term chock full of many different events, we wish you the best of luck and give you the courage of a lion to continue working hard. Firstly, we would like to extend a big thank you to all students, teachers, families and friends who attended the Trivia Night! We would also like to extend our appreciation to the Tech team and Miss Lyons! Without you all, this night wouldn’t have been possible. We had fantastic attendance with ten teams competing and three prize winners; The St John’s Secondary Teachers’ team capturing First Place, the 2017/18 Prefect Team plus moral support close behind in Second place and the amazing Roma Ventures Scout team winning Best Dressed. It was an amazing night with such a vibrant atmosphere, so thank you all for supporting our Marian fundraising event. In regards to the sporting and cultural update; over the holidays and during this term, we have had a number Mighty Marians represent the school in various sporting events, including All schools Touch, Basketball, Tennis, Pony Club (special mention to Teah Mayne- National Champion) and Opti-MINDS. Each representative team and individual produced an outstanding effort and reported back with fantastic results. We would like to congratulate all those participants and extend our acknowledgements to individuals, who advanced further with their sporting or cultural success to represent the region or state.
As the end of the school year is fast approaching, so is Christmas. We are sure that for many of you, Christmas is a time for giving and receiving, however, there are less fortunate people in our community who do not have the opportunity to receive gifts. This year, St John’s is working with St Vincent de Paul with their annual Christmas Hamper Appeal to help those less fortunate than ourselves. We ask that, if possible, people could donate to this year's Christmas hamper appeal. Primary students are able to make donations in the donation boxes in their classroom and secondary students are able to donate every Friday.
In addition to these generous donations, your money can be spent towards this term’s fundraiser; Icy Cups! It is summer now and the weather is well and truly heating up! What better way to cool down than to have a nice Icy Cup! $2 each from the tuckshop November 10th, which is Friday, Week 6! Remember to support Freddo Frog Fridays weekly. Until next time, Tischuss, Adios, C’ya and Goodbye!

Principal’s NewsDear Parents and Friends of St
John’s,
I now believe I am becoming
totally acclimatised to the south
west. If we can all live through
the heat of the last few days,
then we can do anything. Our
thoughts and prayers are with
those families in the central
coast and western parts of New South Wales who have lost
homes and properties to the terrible fires. We thank God
that so far no lives have been lost. Nature can be beautiful
and destructive as we are all aware, in the bush. On Friday
morning, we had a Prep Parent morning tea after drop off.
This was a wonderful opportunity for myself as well as Mrs
Mulligan, Mrs Beattie and Mrs Densley to meet with parents
and talk about what is happening in Prep. Parents shared
their ideas, experiences and concerns around the first three
weeks. What was discovered was that lots of feelings were

shared by most of the parents in Prep. The first year is very
important in establishing good routines, resilience strategies,
friendships and learning skills. I will be in Toowoomba at the
Principals’ meeting towards the end of the week.
Generosity of Staff
Last week, Mr Penrose put together the Extracurricular List
for the staff at St John’s. This is where teachers take on
activities beyond their normal teaching duties. There are
three categories and teachers are expected to choose one
from each. These can range from coaching football / netball
to chess, musical, community service and much much more.
I have never been in a school where teachers give so much
of their time for the overall development of their students.
This is voluntary unpaid work and, as a principal, I am firstly
very proud of them and I thank them for this great effort. It
is things like this that make our school so great and show the
real face of Jesus to others.
Coping Strategies
This week is Week Four leading into Week Five where
students begin to tire. This has been exacerbated by the
very hot weather, which tends to make students very tired.
Be proactive in your approach, speak positively, emphasise
that preplanning for the workload is important and that
approaching tasks with a plan can always help.
BusThere seems to be a little confusion around the bus and the
teacher duty. Teachers will be on duty as follows:
Morning Bus: There will be a teacher on duty at the bus
stop each morning for the next two weeks. As of Week Six,
students will be walking to the Prep room accompanied by
their bus buddy without a teacher on duty. Over the next
couple of weeks, the teacher on duty will ensure that all Prep
students have a buddy to accompany them to the classroom.
Afternoon Bus: Beginning this week, Prep students will
be picked up from the classroom and will walk to the bus
assembly area in small groups with an allocated Year Six
student. Students will then be buddied with either siblings
or bus buddies before going to the bus stop where the bus
teacher will be on duty.
Yours sincerely,
Donaugh Shirley
