Principal’s NewsDear Parents and Friends of St John’sPope John Paul 11 once said, “Artistic talent is a gift from God and whoever discovers it in himself has a certain obligation: to know that he must not waste this talent, but must develop it.”
At St John’s, we are so blessed to have students who can step up, demonstrate a multitude of talents and be proud to share them. The students themselves are also incredibly fortunate to have staff, parents and community members who can nurture these talents.
During Secondary Assembly this week, a letter of appreciation from the Toowoomba Catholic Schools Office, was shared with students and staff. It acknowledged the contribution of Year Eight student, Madison Thomas, to a musical performance at Laurel

Last week, saw the culmination of many hours of planning and preparation in readiness for the 2017 Roma and District Eisteddfod. The high standard of the St John’s performances, both in the Poetry Choir Groups and the Solo Sections was a credit to our students and staff. The adjudicator’s comment in relation to the performance by Mr and Mrs Brennan’s Year One Class, the Overall Champion Choir, acknowledges their excellent efforts. “This group delivered the most beautiful choral sound we have heard in the competition so far. The two-part canon was simply mystical and enchanting.”
Our five Opti-MINDS teams including students from Years Four to Ten acquitted themselves very ably at the State Finals held at the University of Queensland. Two St John’s teams went even further with their performances and were judged the ‘most creative’ in their Division and Category. Their First Place trophies were an acknowledgement of their creativity, lateral thinking and teamwork. Once again, these talents had been nurtured by St John’s staff members closely supported by parents.
We also congratulate Year Eleven student, Sophia Tilbury, who has been chosen to represent our district in the Queen’s Baton Relay as we in lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Year One ScienceThis week, the Year One students
will be starting their Science unit,
‘Spot the Difference’. We are
looking forward to studying this
unit as we will be investigating
how the heating and / or cooling of
a food can change its properties.
We will also be looking at whether
these changes can be reversed.
This week we will begin our
investigation by examining what
happens when we take a frozen
water ice block out of the freezer
and whether the changes we
observe can be reversed if we
refreeze it. We will be recording
information about the changes that
occur by using our sense of sight,
Year Four EnglishThis term, the Year Four students
will be exploring a range of poems,
looking at language features used
by the various poets.
We will be learning about similes,
metaphors, onomatopoeia,
alliteration, rhyming and more.
Students will learn how to identify
these features in poems and
explain their effectiveness.

also have the opportunity to build
a tower using uncooked spaghetti
and marshmallows.
The properties of the following
foods popcorn, chocolate, bread/

spaghetti and egg will be our focus
At the end of our unit, we will be
able to answer why it is important
to know about the handling of
foods, whether or not all foods
change when heated or cooled
and whether these changes can be
reversed.

QSS Track and Field Congratulations
Last week, the QSS 10-12 and 13-19 years Track and Field Carnivals were run.
We had a number of students compete and by all accounts they represented their school and families well, however, we had some tremendous results from two of our students in particular.
Thomas McDonald (Year Seven) finished 6th in the final of the Boys 12 Years 100m, running a time of 12.85 seconds.
Cameron Thompson (Year Ten) won Gold in the Multi Class 13-15 Years Boys Shot Put and Discus. With distances of 9.26m in Shot Put and 29.31m in Discus, Cameron’s Discus throw was 11m further than his nearest rival!
Congratulations to these two students along with all other students who represented South West at the QSS Titles. Their hard work has certainly paid off.

Five St John’s Opti-MINDS teams consisting of twenty-eight students and three teachers
participated in this year’s State/National Opti-MINDS Creative Sustainability Challenge held
at the University of Queensland on 14-15 October.
After leaving Roma early on Saturday morning, our teams arrived at the University of
Queensland ready to set up their displays for the first official event of the weekend, the Opti-
VISION Forum. During the afternoon, each team presented ‘an idea or change that they
believed would create a future that they would like to see’. Our teams showcased The
Importance of a Positive Self-Image, Kindness is Contagious, Solar Panels as an alternative
to present roofing materials, Gender Stereotypes and The Environmental Challenges of
Plastic Fruit Stickers.
On Saturday evening, students enjoyed a barbecue and ‘Shindig’ before heading back to their
accommodation at Oaks Charlotte Towers in the centre of Brisbane.
Sunday morning dawned and the teams returned to the university for a three hour preparation
session. During this time, they were given a new Long Term Challenge in their chosen
category: Language Literature, Social Sciences or Science Engineering and also faced a
Spontaneous Challenge. Following the lunch break, teams presented their creative solutions
in a dramatic presentation to judges and an audience. Each of our teams must be commended
for their entertaining performances.
Special congratulations go to the Language Literature and Science Engineering Open Division
Teams who achieved First Place in their respective divisions and received individual
medallions and a rather weighty perpetual trophy.
Many thanks to Cathy Perkins, Trent Sellars, Nathan Stone, Michael Aire, Anne Moloney and
Aleisha Restieaux for their support leading up to and during the event.

Years 7 -10 End of Semester Exams There will be a new system of education in Senior Secondary in Queensland from 2019 onwards. The current Year 10s will be the last students to complete the OP system in 2019. During that year, the current Year 9s will be the first group of students who will commence Year 11 under the new system.
The new QCE system will see students sitting for both internal assessment and external exams. The ATAR score will replace the current OP score. One of the main points of focus for our students will be the fact that they will have to sit an external examination in each ATAR subject in fourth term of Year 12. This is a major shift from the internal assessment that currently occurs under the OP system.
In order to prepare our students for the future, we are commencing semester exams for English, Mathematics and Science across Years 7 – 10. These exams will occur in Week 6 on Monday Nov 6 and Tuesday November 7. Students have been issued with the exam timetable and have been given an equipment list. It is important that all students collect their equipment prior to Week 6. The equipment should be kept in a clear plastic sleeve.

Principal’s NewsDear Parents and Friends of St
John’s,
I now believe I am becoming
totally acclimatised to the south
west. If we can all live through
the heat of the last few days,
then we can do anything. Our
thoughts and prayers are with
those families in the central
coast and western parts of New South Wales who have lost
homes and properties to the terrible fires. We thank God
that so far no lives have been lost. Nature can be beautiful
and destructive as we are all aware, in the bush. On Friday
morning, we had a Prep Parent morning tea after drop off.
This was a wonderful opportunity for myself as well as Mrs
Mulligan, Mrs Beattie and Mrs Densley to meet with parents
and talk about what is happening in Prep. Parents shared
their ideas, experiences and concerns around the first three
weeks. What was discovered was that lots of feelings were

shared by most of the parents in Prep. The first year is very
important in establishing good routines, resilience strategies,
friendships and learning skills. I will be in Toowoomba at the
Principals’ meeting towards the end of the week.
Generosity of Staff
Last week, Mr Penrose put together the Extracurricular List
for the staff at St John’s. This is where teachers take on
activities beyond their normal teaching duties. There are
three categories and teachers are expected to choose one
from each. These can range from coaching football / netball
to chess, musical, community service and much much more.
I have never been in a school where teachers give so much
of their time for the overall development of their students.
This is voluntary unpaid work and, as a principal, I am firstly
very proud of them and I thank them for this great effort. It
is things like this that make our school so great and show the
real face of Jesus to others.
Coping Strategies
This week is Week Four leading into Week Five where
students begin to tire. This has been exacerbated by the
very hot weather, which tends to make students very tired.
Be proactive in your approach, speak positively, emphasise
that preplanning for the workload is important and that
approaching tasks with a plan can always help.
BusThere seems to be a little confusion around the bus and the
teacher duty. Teachers will be on duty as follows:
Morning Bus: There will be a teacher on duty at the bus
stop each morning for the next two weeks. As of Week Six,
students will be walking to the Prep room accompanied by
their bus buddy without a teacher on duty. Over the next
couple of weeks, the teacher on duty will ensure that all Prep
students have a buddy to accompany them to the classroom.
Afternoon Bus: Beginning this week, Prep students will
be picked up from the classroom and will walk to the bus
assembly area in small groups with an allocated Year Six
student. Students will then be buddied with either siblings
or bus buddies before going to the bus stop where the bus
teacher will be on duty.
Yours sincerely,
Donaugh Shirley
