START UP AND SMALL BUSINESS FREE COUNSELING SERVICES

SBDC (Small Business Development Center)

SBDC utilizes the Chamber office as a meeting hub for new and existing business owners. They offer free business counseling and a number of education series focused on business needs.

SCORE (Senior Corp of Retired Executives)

For more than fifty years SCORE, a nonprofit association has been dedicated to helping small businesses get off the

ground, grow and achieve their goals through education and mentorship. They have a designated office at the Chamber to meet their clients.

Mission Statement

To develop, enhance and represent business; to serve as a source of community leadership;

and to promote trade among the members.

In 2019, the Knox County Chamber of Commerce partnered with the following organizations. Collectively, they offer group plans, discounts, and educational opportunities to our members.

With the assistance of these partners, we are better able to serve our investors.

About the Cover Photo - The Knox County Chamber of Commerce moved their office in July 2019. We are now located at 501 South Main Street in Mount Vernon in the historic Cleveland, Akron & Columbus (CA&C) Railroad Passenger Depot. The CA&C first transported passengers in the summer of 1905 (historicknoxohio.org). The last passengers departed June 1952. The depot was restored in May 2014 and named the William A. Stroud, Jr. Welcome Center. Located right on the Kokosing Gap Trail, the Cham-ber of Commerce is honored to be in this historic building serving the business community as well as guests to the CA&C Depot. The cover photo was taken by Chamber member, Mr. Terry Thurston, owner of Ohio Corporate Photographer.

More than 300 individuals have graduated from the 10-

month Leadership Knox program. The class meets more than 100 community leaders and participates in special tours covering a wide variety of county operations. The program has a concentration in volunteerism and board service. Alumni are encouraged to give back to the community and invited to become a Chamber Am-bassador. Many organizations look to alumni to fill board seats and serve on special projects.

Chamber Ambassadors, or sometimes called “Red Coats”, are the extended arm of the Chamber staff. Their duties are threaded in the Chamber’s work of welcoming new business,

mentoring, and are visible across the county attending Ribbon Cuttings, Ground Breakings and other Chamber events. Ambassadors and Board of Trustees also have the honor of selecting the final nominees from all of the nominations re-ceived for our Annual Awards Dinner in January. We thank them so much for their valuable service. In July of 2019, Ambassadors held their private dinner and meeting at Flapper’s Bar & Grille. This annual dinner is to show the Chamber’s appreciation for their service. Our thanks to the 2019 Chair of the Ambassadors, Ms. Vicki Sant!

Ambassadors

The goal of the Safety Council program is to increase safety awareness and promote interest in the prevention of occupational accidents. Participating business members may earn up to a 4% rebate of their workers’ compensation premiums.

Companies that participated in Safety Council programs earned rebates totaling several thousands dollars. The Safety Council Steering Committee plan and organize the monthly meetings. Annual safety awards are presented in April each year. Twenty-six Knox County businesses were recognized this year for safety in the workplace achievements.

In May, two $2500 scholarship were awarded. Matthew Dinnen of Mount Vernon High School received one scholar-ship. He will be attending Ohio Northern University majoring in mechanical engineering. Josh Gaddis of Frederick-town High School received the other scholarship. He will be attending University of Akron majoring in mechanical en-gineering. Each Knox County high school was sent the criteria and instructions for applying for the scholarships.

Your Chamber Working For Your Community

Every community has a chamber of commerce. Can you imagine a community without a chamber? What does a chamber do? Much of our work is behind the scenes. It may be confidential or efforts that protect the privacy of a business.

Some of our work is very visible like our ribbon cutting ceremonies, Chamber Ambassadors, events, trainings, and our community involve-ment. We strive to be many places and reach out to hundreds of people throughout the year.

In a word, we are resources. With a network of more than 425 mem-bers, that equates to many specialists. It makes Knox County strong and attractive and offers avenues that can help your business. We help build relationships, connect businesses, and work with many people to keep Knox County vibrant and a life-long destination for commerce and residents. It’s a wonderful place to do business and live.

The Knox County Chamber of Commerce is devoted to service and thank our members for supporting our mission and working together to achieve our community’s vision.

We are here to help and promote. Stay in touch and share your achievements and update your profile when needed.
