2 SUMMER SCHOOL

REGISTRATIONRegistration forms are included in this catalog and are

available online at www.apsva.us. APS students should register at the schools they are attending during the 2018-19 school year.

NEW THIS YEAR: Secondary welcome letters, schedules and bus route information will be available electronically in ParentVUE as of July 2, 2019. Unless specifically requested on the secondary registration form, these materials will not be mailed and will be available online only.

Registration for the elementary enrichment programs (except Fun with Coding and Outdoor Lab) may be done at your child’s school or online. See individual program descriptions for more information.

Late Registration for APS secondary students will be held at the Syphax Education Center on June 24 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Only current APS middle and high school students who need to repeat a course are able to register during this time.

Student welcome letters, bus stops and other information will be mailed no later than July 1.

PROCEDURES FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT CURRENTLY REGISTERED WITH APS

Non-APS students who live in Arlington must meet all applicable registration requirements and register in person at their neighborhood APS school. Non-Arlington-resident students must register in the Summer School Office and will be required to pay non-resident fees unless they are living with a parent or legal guardian in Arlington for the summer. Non-Arlington-resident students are not eligible to attend elementary strengthening programs.

All non-APS students (both those who reside in and out of Arlington County) must present the following items along with their completed registration forms and payment:

• Tuberculin skin test or evidence of a negative TB risk assessment done after June 2019

• Complete vaccination records• Physical examination report done after June 2019

(elementary students only)Non-APS students who reside in Arlington must also

provide proof of residency with a parent or legal guardian in order to qualify for resident fees. Residency is proven by providing a copy of a lease or mortgage, or by completing the APS forms A & B (available from the APS Welcome Center, 2110 Washington Blvd, 22204, or online at apsva.us/student-services/residency/). Proof of guardianship may also be required.

DEADLINES Registration deadlines are firm. Audits are not permitted.

New students who are pre-registered to attend APS K-12 programs in the fall have until June 7, 2019 to register for summer school (students who are pre-registered to attend Pre-K in fall 2019 are not eligible to attend summer school).

FEES AND REFUNDSPayment in full is due at the time of registration. Checks

or money orders should be made payable to Arlington Public Schools. Cash and credit cards are not accepted.

Fees for Pre-K through grade 12 strengthening courses are non-refundable. The only exception is for a secondary student who passes a credit-bearing class during the school year and no longer needs to take the class in summer school.

Refunds (less a cancellation fee) may be granted for elementary and middle school enrichment and high school New Work classes, but only until June 28, and only if:

• a student is ill (with a doctor’s note);• there is a death in the immediate family; or• there is a transfer of residence outside of Arlington.

The last day to request a refund is June 28, 2019. Requests should be submitted directly to the registrar who took the original application. Late requests will not be considered.

REDUCED FEES AND SCHOLARSHIPS Reduced fees are available only to students who

currently reside in Arlington and who receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year. Please indicate on the registration form that your student qualifies.

Scholarships are also available on a limited basis through each school’s principal. Please discuss your individual needs with your student’s principal prior to submitting your registration form so that he/she can provide more information.

ATTENDANCE REGULATIONSConsistent attendance in summer school is critical at all

grade levels. In the middle school and high school programs, neither grade nor credit is awarded for any class in which a student has more than three absences (two absences maximum are allowed in high school New Work for Credit classes). If the student is tardy three times, the tardies will count as one absence. Students who are more than 20 minutes late to class or who leave more than 20 minutes before class is over will be marked absent

In Summer School there are no excused absences, even in the case of a court appearance or death in the family.

Students who exceed three absences (two absences for high school New Work) will be unable to continue in the summer program and will be withdrawn.

TRANSPORTATION Elementary students who attend an out-of-boundary

school during the school year MUST register for their home attendance boundary school (if they are attending a strengthening program) in order to receive transportation. Buses for the middle and high school programs will only be provided at the beginning and end of the day. In order to qualify for transportation, elementary students must live at least one mile from the summer school site, and secondary students must live one and a half miles from the summer school site. Bus stops and additional transportation information will be sent to students by U.S. mail no later than July 1, 2019. Parents must arrange for younger children to be escorted to and from the bus stop. Questions about buses should be directed to the Transportation Office at 703-228-8670. The call center is open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROGRAMSThe APS elementary summer strengthening programs are

designed specifically for those students who need additional time and exposure to grade level standards. Only APS and Arlington resident students who are recommended by their principal are eligible to enroll in these courses.

Program locations, times and dates are listed below.Detailed information on these and the elementary enrichment programs are listed on the following pages.

Parents and students are encouraged to discuss possible areas of study and consult with their teachers and counselors in order to make appropriate course selections. Registration forms for strengthening classes must be signed by the

student’s teacher and a school administrator, and turned in to the summer school registrar by the appropriate deadline.

Fees for all strengthening programs are non-refundable.Partial refunds are available for enrichment programs

under limited circumstances (see page 2, Fees and Refunds). Students who are attending an out-of-boundary school

The elementary strengthening program is designed for students who need strengthening or remediation in reading and math as recommended by their teachers and administrators. Reading and math interventions are provided in a small group setting to strengthen literacy and numeracy skills. The intervention groups will reinforce grade-level content to complement what students learned during the school year.

Elementary School administrators and teachers will invite eligible students to register for this program.

At each elementary site, resource services will be available for students who receive special education support during the school year. Summer school resource teachers ensure that accommodations and modifications are in place and provide direct/group instruction as needed. APS students whose IEP specified a self-contained level of service during the 2018-19 school year will also be provided with required services at each site. Registration in the countywide Special Education Programs is limited to students who were enrolled in these programs during the 2018-19 school year. Although students with Extended School Year (ESY) services do not pay fees, they must submit a registration form by the May 3 deadline.

The highly qualified staff will safely guide campers through various activities that may include aquatic studies, natural history, and nature’s supermarket. This overnight program is conducted at the Phoebe Hall-Knipling Outdoor Laboratory near Warrenton, Virginia. Students are transported to the Outdoor Lab on Monday morning and returned to Arlington on Friday afternoon of the same week. Platform tents, meals and snacks are provided. Tent mates will be assigned by the Camp Director. For additional information call 703-228-6166. • Attendance at an orientation session for social studies virtual courses is required (times and locations TBA)

• For successful completion of a course, students will be expected to work at least 4-6 hours per weekday throughout the course.

• Students participating in a virtual course must have a valid email address that is accessed regularly.

• Students must have internet access or the ability to travel to a site where internet is available.

• Students who need assistance with a social studies virtual course have the option to attend open labs each Tuesday and Thursday at the summer school site.

• Assessments will be administered virtually except for the following:• Economics & Personal Finance – Students are strongly

encouraged to attend a proctored WISE Test for Financial Literacy. Varying test dates will be offered.
