Welcome from the President

Dr. Angie Su, President Florida Distance Learning Association & President Florida Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

Dear Friends of FDLA and FAMTE:

This year we have another robust program crafted for you. Collaborating with the Florida Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (FAMTE), the program is to inform participants of the latest developments in Distance Learning as well as academic content related topics in Florida in hopes to narrow the gap between K-12 and Higher Education. Each year, the committee brainstorms for ideas to further

enhance our contributions to distance education; hence we will be presenting the first Best Paper Award from conference 2018 published by FDLA journal. The papers that were selected for the FDLA journal publication and the Transformations Journal were carefully reviewed by a team of reviewers for the Best Paper Award. We are also pleased to learn that due to the increase citation to our journals, it has improved our journal ranking tremendously.

We offer deep appreciation to our generous sponsors. With the sponsorship, we were able to hold our conference at a prime location and provide attendees with the reception, refreshments, and luncheons. Most of all, a BIG “Thank you” goes to our presenters who diligently prepared highly informative presentations with the latest on educational tools, technologies, and services. Your dedication to distance learning while not surprising, is appreciated. We are also grateful to the many volunteers and conference committee members for their time and tireless efforts to help make this conference a success. On behalf of the entire FDLA/FAMTE team, we urge you to take advantage of everything that this conference has to offer so that you will return home excited and empowered to lead your school and students to greater learning experiences. We appreciate that faced with many options and limited resources; you have chosen to join us.

Thank you for your continued support, and enjoy the conference!

Hui Fang Huang “Angie” Su, Ed.D. President, FDLA, a state chapter of the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) President, FAMTE, a state chapter of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) and an affiliate of the Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics (FCTM)

Morning – Friday, February 1, 2019 8:00 - 8:55 am Refreshments 9:05 - 10:00 am Keynote: Bridging the Gap: How do K-12 and Higher Ed Online Programs Differ? Jodi Crum Marshall, President, Online Education Solutions (Former President and CEO of FVS; (Crystal Ballroom) Let's explore three areas which seem to be markedly different in online education at the K-12 level versus in higher education. Grading (and the requirements for student submission and teacher response), Asynchronous versus Synchronous teaching and learning opportunities, and Pace (or progression) throughout a course. This keynote is designed to provide information in each of these three areas, in order to promote deeper thinking by participants on what is best for online students. 10:15 - 11:15 am Legal Issues in Distance Learning Panel Presentation (Crystal Ballroom) Beyond Copyright: Understanding the Legal Implications for use of Online Technologies in Education Educational technologies seem more sophisticated each academic year. Online learning with the possible incorporation of social media, student engagement tracking, augmented and virtual reality, gamification, artificial intelligence, and collaborative environments, to name only a few, have the power to create powerful change the face of distance learning. As distance educators incorporate more of these tools, however, the legal landscape is also changing. Laws related to privacy, intellectual property ownership, Title IX compliance, employment law, and the overall legal and regulatory framework for the provision of online educational engagement are important for institutions and educators to understand. This panel session, led by three attorneys who also serve as legal educators and administrators, will help faculty and administrators comply with the university’s legal obligations, protect themselves, and enhance the learning environments for their students. Panel Members: Dean Jon M. Garon, J.D., NSU Shepard Broad College of Law; Tatjana L. Martinez, J.D.,NSU Abraham S. Fischler College of Education; Susan Hayes Stephan, J.D., NSU Shepard Broad College of Law Moderator: Vicenç Feliú, J.D.,LL.M., M.I.L.S., NSU Shepard Broad College of Law 10:15 - 10:45 am 2019 FAMTE Educator of the Year Award Recipient Presentation, Part 1: Robert Schoen, FSU; (Crystal Ballroom) From One to Infinity: A Framework for Early Counting and Numeracy There is a well-established body of research, mostly published by psychologists, that can provide a framework for professional knowledge of the fundamental principles about counting and early number that children need to learn before they can understand more advanced topics. In this presentation, these counting principles will be described and illustrated using videos of children discussing their thoughts about counting and number. After learning about them in professional-development sessions provided by the speaker, hundreds of Florida teachers have found these Counting principles to be useful in their teaching practice. A link to Web-based resources for disseminating information about the framework will be shared.

Designed to measure subject-matter knowledge, knowledge of curriculum, knowledge of how students at the elementary level think about mathematics, and professional vernacular that is useful for teaching mathematics, the Knowledge for Teaching Elementary Mathematics (K-TEM) tests have successfully detected treatment effects for multiple teacher professional-development programs and can predict student achievement on a standardized test in mathematics. We will describe the test(s) and provide information about how interested persons may use them for their own purposes. 11:30 am - 1:30 pm 2019 FDLA/FAMTE Awards Luncheon (Sponsored by NSU; Moderated by Jia Borror and Hui Fang “Angie” Su) (Crystal Ballroom) Panel Members (Note: This list does not encompass all award winners): FDLA Distance Educator of the Year: Elizabeth (Biz) Metzger (Broward College) Pioneer in Distance Learning: Evangeline Tsibris Cummings (UF) Visionary Award for Distinguished Leadership: Susan Stephan (NSU) Distinguished Service Award: Nancy Swenson and Amanda Major (UCF) Innovative Leader in Distance Learning: K-12: Charlene Montford (Legacy Academy) FAMTE K-12 Teaching Award: Terri Sebring (FLDOE) FAMTE Mathematics Educator of the Year Award: Rob Schoen (FSU)
