INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the Fullerton Rangers Youth Soccer Club (FRYSC) family! This handbook is intended to provide our parents, both current and new, with a handy resource to help them prepare for their child’s participation in our recreational soccer program. Our goal is to provide your child with a fun activity that will help instill sportsmanship and teamwork, while helping to learn and develop their soccer skills. Recreational soccer is a soccer program primarily devoted to the enjoyment and development of soccer players without the emphasis on travel or high-level competition.

Fullerton Rangers is a non-profit community soccer organization, built upon the efforts

of our volunteers from coaches to our board members to everyone in between. Our program’s success in fostering the game of soccer, and developing boys and girls of our community is directly related to the dedication of our volunteers.

We are looking forward to providing a quality program that your child will enjoy. For additional information, please visit our website at www.fullertonrangers.com.

HISTORY OF THE CLUB

The Fullerton Rangers Soccer Club began in September 1963 when a group of men who wanted to play soccer organized a team and entered the Pacific Soccer League. The team selected the name "Fullerton Rangers" because several members of the team were Scottish and were devoted fans of the Rangers team from Glasgow, Scotland who play in the Scottish Premier League.

In 1966, a youth team was added consisting of 8 to 14 year olds that played in the National Youth Soccer Association (NYSA) of Orange County. Our first youth team became the League Champions. A second youth team was added in 1967: Peewees (8 to 11 years old) and Intermediates (12 to 14 year olds). On January 20, 1968 the Club was incorporated in the state of California as a non-profit organization. In 1970, the youth teams started playing in the Pacific Soccer League Youth Group. The Club continued operating with two youth teams until 1972. In the period from 1972 to 1974, a slow growth began such that in 1974, seven youth teams and two adult teams were playing soccer.

In 1975, the 10th season with youth teams, the Fullerton Rangers Youth Soccer Club (FRYSC) was formed as a division of the Fullerton Rangers Soccer Club. The Youth Club was managed by 12 Board of Directors which were elected at the year-end parents' meeting (Annual General Meeting). In this season, the club was comprised of 20 teams; nine in a newly created league within the city of Fullerton called the Fullerton Soccer League (FSL); and the remainder of the youth teams competed in the newly formed Coast Soccer League (CSL). The CSL had 60 teams from 15 cities and FRYSC was the largest club in the CSL.

NEW PARENT ORIENTATION – FALL 2019

For the succeeding two years there was an explosion for the sport of soccer, both in the country and in the Club. In 1978, the Club joined the California Youth Soccer Association (CYSA). CYSA is the California branch of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) which is the governing body of all soccer in the United States. FRYSC had 120 teams and 1700 players. In 1982, the Fullerton Rangers introduced our first girl's CSL team (U16). The FRYSC hosted the first Friendship Tournament on Labor Day weekend in 1983. The men's team is no longer in existence.

Since 2004, FRYSC through its Board of Directors, Director of Coaching and professional Coaching Staff has seen the growth of our Competitive program. Not only have we garnered back to back National Championships (2011-2012), but also have won prestigious International tournaments such as the Dallas Cup in 2011 and 2012. The foundation of this success has been the quality of our professional coaching staff which includes the 2012 Nike Coach of the Year as well as Head Coaches from Division I Universities who bring their knowledge to our program. The Rangers are poised to continue this winning tradition for many more years to come.

MISSION STATEMENT

It shall be the object of the FRYSC to organize youth soccer teams to participate in league competition to foster, promote and advance the cause of youth soccer in and for the youth of the Fullerton area.

Goals/Philosophies:

● Develop skills and knowledge of the game of soccer for coaches, players, referees and parents.

● Open registration to every child who desires to play soccer regardless of residence, talent, race, religion or gender.

● Positive coaching by giving encouragement, displaying good sportsmanship, and setting a good example for all parents and players.

● Balance team drafts for keeping competition at a fair level of play.

● Encourage good sportsmanship by creating a positive environment based on mutual respect, rather than win-at-all costs attitude.

● Increase opportunities for players who wish to play at a higher level of competition over that of recreational play in a manner that works with, not against, the recreational soccer program.

● Encourage more referees to participate in FRYSC.

● Develop a greater awareness of FRYSC in Fullerton and Orange County.

● Increase the awareness of the soccer environment at every level within Southern California to the membership of FRYSC: Men’s and Woman’s U.S. National Team and World Cup, Major League Soccer (Galaxy), Professional Development League (Seahorses), Collegiate Soccer (CSUF Titans, Fullerton

PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide transportation for your child. Be on time or early. Notify Coach or Team Parent if you have a problem with getting your child to the game or practice. (It is up to you to arrange car-pooling, if necessary, with others on the team).

2. Place identification on all clothing and equipment.

3. Encourage your child to practice at home. If possible, supply children with a ball of their own. Keep ball in sight – remember, out of sight/out of mind.

4. Participate in Team Social Functions.

5. Present positive sports minded attitude.

6. Volunteer to help your Team Parent.

7. Look for sponsors and support the league fundraiser!

At The Games

1. Arrive at least 30 minutes early.

2. Exemplify good sportsmanship.

3. Make positive remarks to all players on the field.

4. Do not criticize a Referee’s decision (Learn the rules of soccer).

5. Stay behind the restraining line. 5 feet from touchline, behind coaches and players.

6. Profanity is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN.

7. Don’t distract the coach with unnecessary questions or advice.

8. Support the team and your child by attending ALL THE GAMES.

9. React positively to the team’s wins AND losses.

ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR BY PARENTS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!

Referee will ask the coach to have the parent leave the field. If abuse continues, the

game may be stopped and the team will forfeit the game!

CODE OF CONDUCT

COACH’S CODE

● Soccer is a game to be enjoyed.

● The laws of soccer should be regarded as mutual agreements, the spirit or letter of, which no one should try to evade or break.

● Visiting teams and spectators are honored guests.

● All players shall get 50% play time per game - no exceptions unless injury occurs.

● Officials and opponents should be treated and regarded as honest of intention.

● Official’s decisions should be accepted without looking angry no matter how unfair they may seem.

● Winning is desirable, but winning at any cost defeats the purpose of the game.

● Losing can be a triumph when the team has given its best.

● In soccer, as in life, treat others with respect.

PLAYER’S CODE

● Play the game for the game’s sake.

● Be generous when you win. Be graceful when you lose.

● Be fair always no matter what the cost.

● Obey the laws of the game. Work for the good of your team.

● Accept the decisions of the officials with good grace. Believe in the honesty of your opponents.

● Conduct yourself with honor and dignity.

● Honestly and wholehearted applaud the efforts of your teammates and your opponents.

PARENT’S CODE

● Children have more need of example than criticism.

● Make athletic participation for your child and others a positive experience.

● Attempt to relieve pressure of competition, not increase it. A child is easily affected by outside influences.

● Be kind to your child’s coach. The coach is a volunteer giving personal time to provide a recreational activity for your child. The coach is providing a valuable community service, often without reward other than the personal satisfaction of having served the community.

Page 10: 2019 NEW PARENT ORIENTATION · NEW PARENT ORIENTATION – FALL 2019 - 2 - For the succeeding two years there was an explosion for the sport of soccer, both in the country and in the

NEW PARENT ORIENTATION – FALL 2019

- 7 -

● The opponents are necessary friends. Without them your child could not participate.

● Applaud good plays by your team and by members of the opposing team.

● Accept the results of each game. Encourage the child to be gracious in victory, and defeat.

● Be respectful to the officials at all games. They are there to ensure the safety of all players and to enforce the rules of soccer. They are there because we need them. Please don’t abuse them.

FRYSC SOCCER PROGRAMS

RECREATIONAL

Our Recreational Soccer program is devoted to the enjoyment and development of soccer players in a balanced competitive setting, relying on volunteers to coach the players. This program serves children from age 4 to 19. A child requires no previous experience to play and there is no selection or tryout process. All players who register are assigned to a team as long as space is available on team rosters.

We believe that it’s important to stress that winning soccer games is not the goal of the Recreational program. Competition can be healthy, but a “win at all cost” attitude can prove problematic. We believe it is the collective responsibility of the parents, players and coaches to create an empowering culture where learning and having fun is the focus of our program, not winning. We offer more competitive programs if competition is important to you and your child.

SIGNATURE PROGRAM

The Signature League is for players, ages 8 through 14, who are interested in an advanced level of recreational play that provides a more competitive soccer experience and player development opportunity. The objective of the Signature League is to provide an intermediary playing level that better prepares players, parents and coaches for the transition from recreational play to competitive play, while retaining many of the benefits of a recreational schedule at a lower cost.

Signature leagues are “localized” playing circuits formed by eligible recreational leagues

coming together, that was created by Cal South. Each league is responsible for publishing their individual rules and guidelines, relative to coach and player selection. Promotion of player development is of paramount importance.

Our Signature Program is designed to promote skilled soccer, good sportsmanship, fair play and a safe environment. Players are selected though try-out sessions held every year in April. The season begins in July, and games start in September. The games will be played on one of the Signature League designated fields. For additional information

about our Signature Program, or if you are interested in coaching a Signature team, please contact Tim Winters at [email protected].

COMPETITIVE (“CLUB”)

Competitive soccer is for players ages 8 through 18, who have grown out of the Recreational program and are looking for that next level with more competition. FRYSC’s Competitive Soccer program enables our youth and families to compete in the highest level of league play. Each player is challenged in a dynamic, competitive, and fun environment and is encouraged to make decisions under the guidance of our professional coaching staff.

Our program emphasizes on the development of technical skills, tactical awareness,

confidence, determination, sportsmanship, team play, character development, and academic excellence. These aspirations are fostered by our qualified coaches, who are dedicated to the team and each player as they work together toward shared goals.

Competitive soccer is played year around, and includes at least 2 practices a week, with regular league play and travel out of town for tournaments. This year, our Competitive team tryouts TBD. If you are interested in trying out for our Competitive Program, please bring your player to the tryouts, or contact Tom Connor at [email protected].

JUNIOR RANGERS

Our Junior Rangers Program is designed to provide our youngest athletes, ages 4 through 8 years old, with progressive training in a professionally run training environment. Our exceptional coaches prepare players to learn by sparking imagination and creativity, emphasizing individual ball control, general coordination, agility and balance. This program is the stepping stone to joining our competitive younger program.

At Junior Rangers, you can expect your child to learn the game of soccer through fun, education and competition. Just like in any form of education, the earlier you begin this type of development in soccer will set the player up for greater success throughout their soccer journey. For additional information on our Junior Rangers Program, please contact Robin Garrity at [email protected].

PLAYER AGES & DIVISION

FRYSC follows US Soccer Federation Player Development Initiatives which specify age divisions, games play rules and coaching requirements. Players compete in birth year age divisions starting at U6. For the Fall 2019/Spring 2020 seasons, division, birth years and rules align as follows:

This year, the girls U8 will be a combination of birth years 2011 & 2012, and the girls

U10 will consist of birth years 2010 & 2009. Players are allowed to “play up”. For

example, a player whose birth year would place them in U8 is allowed to play in U10

provided they are competitively capable. Player are never allowed to “play down”

without a medical reason, which would require a doctor’s note.

Required Equipment

Fortunately, soccer is not one of those sports that require a lot of expensive equipment. All players will be required to wear and/or bring the following equipment to every practice and game:

● Shin Guards ● Soccer Cleats (Other types of cleats are NOT allowed) ● Soccer Ball (see size chart above)

● Socks – long enough to cover the Shin Guards ● Water Bottle

Uniforms will be distributed during the week of August 13th, to your coach or team parent and they include: Jersey, shorts, and socks. Your team parent will be required to allocate the uniforms to the players by size, and will often have names printed on the back of the jerseys before handing them out to players. Players will only be required to wear the uniforms at the games, not during practice.

Page 13: 2019 NEW PARENT ORIENTATION · NEW PARENT ORIENTATION – FALL 2019 - 2 - For the succeeding two years there was an explosion for the sport of soccer, both in the country and in the

NEW PARENT ORIENTATION – FALL 2019

Any personal items (especially soccer balls and water bottles) should be clearly marked with the player’s name and phone number.

Other Equipment/Safety Notes

● No jewelry is allowed to be worn during practices and games, including earrings, watches, rings, necklaces, bracelets, or hard hair clasps or barrettes.

● No hard casts are allowed to be worn during practices and games. Splints must be of a padded nature and wrapped.

● No brimmed hats or sunglasses are allowed to be worn at games by any player

● Sweatshirts or other garments are allowed at games, but should be worn UNDER the jersey.

COACHES & TEAMS

Although our recreational coaches undergo licensing and training, we ask that you please keep in mind that the coaches are still just volunteers who are generously donating their time and effort to the program. Please help them in any way you can, whether it is helping out at practices if needed, or even doing the small things like communicating to your coach ahead of time if your child will be missing your team’s game. In the past few years, it has become more and more difficult to find parents who are willing to volunteer their time to coach, mainly because other parents are not helping out with the team. Let’s help make the coach’s job just a little bit easier if we can!

Coaches are required to contact the players on their team no later than the first week of August, to let them know that you will be on his/her team and advise you of the practice time and location. Please do not worry if you have not been contacted by your child’s coach, even though your friends or neighbors had been contacted by their coaches. Many coaches are often on vacation during this time so you might not be contacted until he/she returns.

All of our coaches undergo risk management through a process called “Livescan” to screen for criminal background checks with the Department of Justice. It is a process that must be completed prior to assuming their team duties. In fact, all team parents

and assistant coaches are required to submit to Livescan before they are allowed to work with your children.

We are always in search of coaches. If you are interested in coaching a team, please contact [email protected] for additional information.

PRACTICES

Each team will practice for 1 – 1½ hour(s) twice a week (weather permitting), either Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays, at a location selected by the coaches. All practices will officially begin the week of August 1st, but some teams may not practice the week of August 13th since several of our fields are closed due to City maintenance and/or irrigation.

Please note that most practice fields do NOT have any public restrooms available. Please make sure that your child uses the restroom BEFORE he comes to practice.

After Daylight Savings Time ends, practices will be limited as lighted fields are limited to one (1) location at Pacific Drive Elementary School. For this reason, recreational teams

in U6-U9 generally do not practice after Daylight Savings Time ends.

GAMES

The first game of the season will take place on September 8th, which is usually the first Saturday after Labor Day. Games will be held on Saturdays and a few Sunday afternoon for the older teams in divisions U9 through U12. Games will last approximately 1 to 1.25 hours, depending on the age level. Players should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to their game in order to warm up with their team before the game.

All nets are the same size. Nets are stored in bags – one net in each bag, so you will need to pick up 2 bags. Please be considerate of the private residence. If nets & flags are missing, please contact your commissioner - do NOT knock on the door for any reason. Please be considerate of the time when picking up and dropping off the equipment.

SET-UP DUTIES:

(1) Pick up the nets/flags from 334 King Place, Fullerton. Best practice is to pick up on the Friday before the game. Make sure pick up 2 Nets and 4 flags.

(2) Team should arrive at least one (1) hour before game time, to set up the field.

(3) Unlock the goals (coach will have combo) and move them into position on the field.

(4) Attach nets to the goals using the Velcro that are inside the bags. Attach the empty bags to the back of the goals so that the team returning the nets will have the bags.

TAKE DOWN DUTIES:

(1) Remove the nets from the goals. Fold the nets as neatly as possible so that they do not get tangled when the next team has to set up the nets. Place the net and velcros back into the net bags. Net bags should be attached to the back of the goals.

(2) Move the goals back to the gate (coach should know where) and LOCK goals with the chain. Goals MUST be locked.

(3) Make sure to return 2 net bags and 4 flags to 334 King Place, Fullerton, and place on the south side of the house. Please do your best to keep it organized and neat.

GAME SCHEDULE

We anticipate “preliminary” game schedules to be released during the week of August 13th for divisions U6 though U12. However, since we do have a few coaches that coach both Signature and Recreational teams, we will need to make some schedule changes to our preliminary game schedules in order to accommodate any conflicts they may have. Unfortunately, the Signature program’s schedules are usually not published until the last week of August. Game schedules will be posted at the following website: http://www.teamsideline.com/sites/fullertonrangers/schedules.

Also be advised that teams in divisions U9 through U12, will have at least two Sunday afternoon games during our regular league play. This is necessary so that they can participate in the City Cup Tournament which takes place during the first two (2) weekends in November. Please make sure that your parents are made aware of the tournament dates (11/3-4 & 11/10-11), so that they do not make other plans during that weekend. Games will take place throughout the day - morning, noon, and late afternoon to accommodate coaching conflicts. Please always let your coaches know if your child will not be at a game or practice.

Divisions U14-U19 play in the Cal South Inter-City League, which consist of teams from other local recreational clubs, usually from Orange, Whittier, Anaheim, and more. Historically, Inter-City game schedules have not been released until the first week of September. Once they are published, you can find the game schedule here: http://www.calsouthsignature.com/en/fall-intercity/.

GAME/PRACTICE CANCELLATIONS

Access to all practice and game fields are provided to us FRYSC through licensing with the City of Fullerton (City). FRYSC is required to follow all of the City’s ordinances, rules and regulations pertaining to field usage, including closures.

In the event of inclement weather conditions, soccer games and practices will be cancelled. Games and practices will be canceled if excessive rain causes field

Page 18: 2019 NEW PARENT ORIENTATION · NEW PARENT ORIENTATION – FALL 2019 - 2 - For the succeeding two years there was an explosion for the sport of soccer, both in the country and in the

conditions to become poor or unsafe, or if continuing playing will cause damage to the field. The City’s definition of poor or unsafe field conditions includes:

Standing water on the field. Water surfacing or bubbling up when walking on the field. Field muddy to the point that footing becomes unstable. Presence of thunder and lightning.

When games or practices are cancelled by the City due to unsuitable field conditions, coaches will be responsible for notifying their teams. FRYSC is in the process of establishing a league-wide notification system where you can receive a text message if the fields are closed.

VOLUNTEERS

FRYSC is a non-profit organization, established in 1966, to teach the game of soccer and develop positive character traits in children through their participation in a quality sports program. Our recreational program is created strictly through the efforts of volunteers. Volunteers are themselves a kind of team, supporting the children as they learn and play soccer.

The more volunteers we have, the better the recreational program will become. Problems such as lack of organization and lack of communication occur when there is a shortfall of volunteers. With few volunteers covering too many duties, tasks fall through the crack. In order to provide the quality program our kids deserve, YOU should to be a part of this process! All volunteers will receive instructions and training for selected jobs. Remember, no previous experience is necessary; all that’s needed is willingness.

The following is a list of volunteering opportunities for you to consider:

Head Coach - Coaching soccer is one of the most rewarding opportunities FRYSC has to offer. First time coaches must attend an online coach’s clinic, and there are opportunities to continue self-paced training. We pay for all coaching license costs. No experience needed. We will train you.

Board Member – We can never have enough help, positions are frequently available. Board positions include: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Scheduler, Director of Team Parent/Ways & Means, Director of Recreation, Director of Publicity,

Director of Business Development, to name a few. See List of Board Members for entire list.

Commissioners — Division Commissioners support the League by organizing the assignment of players to teams and teams to coaches. After teams are fully rostered, Commissioners help communicate information to the coaches.

Club Volunteer - Help with various club functions as needed. Approx. 3 events per year, such as Picture Day, Opening Day, and Tournaments.

Page 19: 2019 NEW PARENT ORIENTATION · NEW PARENT ORIENTATION – FALL 2019 - 2 - For the succeeding two years there was an explosion for the sport of soccer, both in the country and in the

Fundraiser Representative – (1) Picks up and distribute fundraising items to team families; (2) Collect money from team families; and (3) Return team fundraiser money to

FRYSC on Collection date (October 13, 2017); and Pick-up team pictures when fundraiser funds are returned on Collection Date and distribute to team families.

Team Banner Keeper - Make or purchase (team to reimburse) a team banner and bring the banner and set it up at each game during the season.

Without the volunteer of the parents and guardians of our players, our recreational program would cease to exist. Parent-Guardian support is crucial to our organization.

COMMUNICATION

Please remember that all officers, coaches and commissioners are volunteers, and therefore conduct all communication in a professional and respectful manner. When dealing with problems and issues in the FRYSC, it is very important that a “Line of Contact” be followed. When faced with a problem, parents need to discuss the issue first with the TEAM COACH. If satisfactory resolution cannot be achieved, then the person should address the COMMISSIONER of the particular division. If the Commissioner, Coach and parent cannot resolve the matter, then the person should

address the DIR. OF RECREATION. The Director shall try to reach resolution. The final person to handle problems is the PRESIDENT of FRYSC. It is rare that a problem will have to follow the entire “Line of Contact”. If it is not followed, a person will be sent back to follow the line.

TROPHIES / MEDALS

All recreational players will receive participation trophies or medals for the regular season. Trophies/medals are distributed at the final Coaches Ratings Meeting (U8 and older) of the season, which takes place during the week of November 5th). To receive trophies/medals the coach MUST submit his player evaluations.

PLAYER SAFETY

FRYSC and your child’s coach, are committed to providing a safe environment for the children and preventing injuries. Not all injuries are preventable, but as a parent, you can help prevent certain sports related injuries to your child, by:

Use Proper Equipment: Making sure that your child has the proper equipment is a good start. Players must wear shin guards at all games and practices to protect lower legs. Soccer cleats must be rubber or molded plastic – not metal, and cannot have a cleat at the front tip of the shoe. Glasses or goggles should be made with polycarbonate or similar materials.

Sufficient Rest: Children should have plenty of rest before and after practice

and games. A good night’s sleep is an important recovery tool as are healthy meals.

Plenty of Fluids: Make sure that your child is properly hydrated. A general guideline is to drink 24 ounces of water 2 hours before exercise, an additional 8 ounces of water right before exercise, and 8 ounces of water every 20 minutes during exercise.

Play by the Rules: Violent behavior and aggressive play increase the risk of injury and should be strongly discouraged. Parents should encourage good sportsmanship and fair play.

Warm Up and Cool Down: It is always a good ideal that your child does warm-up and cool-down properly in order to maximize their performance and reduce the risk of injury. Prevention begins with conditioning.

When In Doubt – Sit Them Out: At least half of sports injuries in children are the result of overuse, and most overuse injuries begin with soreness after a tough practice session or game. While it isn’t severe enough to prevent a child from playing, the soreness is a sign of inflammation due to microscopic tears in muscles or ligaments after a tough training session. Rest allows the tears to heal. Without proper recovery time, the post-practice soreness will turn into during-game discomfort, and eventually all-the-time pain that prevents a child from participating.

INJURY & INSURANCE

If your child was injured during practice or a game, please contact Robin Garrity at [email protected], as soon as possible. Included in each child’s registration fee is payment for an excess coverage insurance policy for accidents/injuries. This policy is purchased through Cal South. Eligible covered expenses will be paid only if they are in excess of other valid and collectible insurance or medial payment plan. If the claimant is covered by any other health insurance or medical payment plan, they must

first submit a claim to the primary insurance carrier. In addition to the Cal South Insurance Claim Questionnaire and Cal South Incident Report, the insurance company claim form must be submitted for each individual claim. Go to www.calsouth.com for more information.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who can participate in Recreational League soccer? The league serves kids from ages 4 to 19, see the Division Ages Table for eligible ages. A child requires no previous experience to play. Does a player have to be a Fullerton resident to play in FRYSC? No. We accept all players, regardless of what City they reside in. When does the season start? There are two seasons; Fall and Spring.

● Fall Season: Teams can start practicing the first week of August, with the first game of the season starting the weekend after Labor Day. The season runs for approximately 10 games, ending 2 weekends before Thanksgiving. Post-Season: Divisions U9 through U14 all teams participate in our City Cup tournament starting after the last game of the season. Two teams per division are selected to play in the Cal South District 3 & 4 Commissioner's Cup, generally held the first two weekends of December. Divisions U8 and U9 All-Stars (by coach nomination) play the weekend following Thanksgiving weekend. Divisions U10 through U14 All-Stars play Internally the first weekend of January. One team is formed per division to compete in the Cal South District 3 & 4 All-Stars the second and third weekend of January. Champion and Finalist of District All-Stars competes in the Cal South Rec All-Star TOC the final weekend of January.

● Spring Season: The season runs for approximately 8 games starting in March and ending early May. Games are held on Sundays after 12noon. Team practices are replaced with approximately 4-6 professional run clinics held on Friday nights.

Where will my player practice and play? (Fall) It depends on the age and who the coach is. Generally, the teams practice at a school or park close to where the coach lives or works in Fullerton. The games are played at schools and parks within Fullerton. Check our Fields page for a list of locations. When will my player practice and play? (Fall) It depends on the age and who the coach is. Generally, the teams practice on Monday / Wednesday or Tuesday / Thursday close to where the coach lives or works in Fullerton.

The practice times are usually 4:00 to 5:30 for the younger divisions, 5:30 to 7:00, and 7:00 to 8:30 for the older divisions. The games are primarily held on Saturday and some games at night or on Sunday (after 12 noon), usually at the same location, and game start times are generally set between 8am and 3pm. What equipment do I need for my children to play soccer?

● Fall Season: Each player will receive a uniform (shorts, socks and jersey). You will need to supply your player with a pair of soccer shoes (with molded studs or

Page 26: 2019 NEW PARENT ORIENTATION · NEW PARENT ORIENTATION – FALL 2019 - 2 - For the succeeding two years there was an explosion for the sport of soccer, both in the country and in the

cleats – no toe cleat or metal is allowed), shin guards, and a ball. These can be purchased at most sporting goods stores, or soccer stores.

● Spring Season: Each player will receive a t-shirt. You will need to supply your player with a pair of soccer shoes (with molded studs or cleats – no toe cleat is allowed), shin guards, and a ball. These can be purchased at most sporting goods stores, or soccer stores.

● What size ball does my child need? Size 3 soccer ball for divisions U5-U8 (children born in 2014-2011) Size 4 soccer ball - U9-U12 (children born in 2010-2007) Size 5 soccer ball - U13-U19 (children born in 2006-2000)

Does my child have to try-out? No, every player registered during early-bird registration period is guaranteed a place on a team. When are the teams formed? Teams are formed in late-June. The coaches will notify you of your child’s placement between the last week of July and first week of August. How are teams formed? Most teams are formed by a “blind draft” procedure, utilizing a computer model. The exception is the older teams, (division 1, 2 & 3 – U14 through U19) which are selected in an “open draft” procedure, where coaches select players by name in rounds alternating order. How are coaches selected? All of our coaches are volunteers that express their desire to coach by notifying the Director of Recreation. They are required to fill out a “Request for Live-Scan Form” and get clearance by our State Association (CYSA-S: Cal South). Each coach must be fingerprinted by the State Association. Safety of our players is #1. Most coaches are parents like you that want to spend time with their children. What if I do not know a lot about soccer and want to coach a team? No problem, as we can provide you with the necessary information and training to make this season fun and rewarding for all. Can we switch teams after they are formed? The league policy is that no switches can be accommodated. Due to the large number of players and teams, it would be impossible to run the league with any success. We do however allow players to be removed from the team they were assigned and placed on the waiting list. If a team needs a player with a similar rating as your child, it may be possible for them to be placed on that team. However, there is no guarantee that this situation would be any better. Wait list players are not guaranteed a place on a team; they will only be placed if an opening arises.

Page 27: 2019 NEW PARENT ORIENTATION · NEW PARENT ORIENTATION – FALL 2019 - 2 - For the succeeding two years there was an explosion for the sport of soccer, both in the country and in the

NEW PARENT ORIENTATION – FALL 2019

- 24 -

What is the wait list? The wait list is where we put players that register after the cut off date for guaranteeing a player’s placement on a team. This list does not ensure that your child will play. We use this list to complete rosters with openings or to replace players that drop out of our league. What if I cannot make the times or days the coach chooses for practice? Historically, teams have worked together to provide transportation where needed. See "Can we switch teams after they are formed" above. If things don’t work out, can I get a refund?

Fall - 100% Refund deadline is June 15. 50% Refund deadline is August 15. All Refunds are subject to a $10 convenience fee. Spring - 100% Refund deadline is generally the second Friday of February. 50% Refund deadline is generally the fourth Friday of February (date changes - See Spring Registration section for specific dates). All Refunds are subject to a $10 convenience fee. What is Competitive League soccer? The Fullerton Rangers is a comprehensive soccer club that provides various levels of competition. Our club program provides some of the best coaching and skill development in Southern California. We support a team in each age bracket (U9-U19), both boys and girls, to compete with other teams from Southern California. These teams are selected through a try-out with each team. More information can be found under the Competitive section of our website, or by contacting the coach directly searching our website team listings. Our coaches strive to obtain the highest level of coaching licenses available, in some cases, National Licenses (USSF A, B, or C). What is Signature League soccer? This is a league developed by our state association, California Youth Soccer Association–South (CYSA-S) designed to be an intermediate level of play between competitive and recreational soccer. The Fullerton Rangers will be supporting teams in the under 9 to under 15 age brackets, both boys and girls. The teams are selected through a try-out session held in April/May. More information can be found under the Signature section of our website. Where can I find out all there is to know about the Fullerton Rangers? Always check the league’s website at www.fullertonrangers.com to find out what the current rules, news or events are. Keep in mind, the first place to go with a question during the season is your Coach, then the Commissioner of your Division. Please call them first! If all other sources fail to produce an answer, send an email to [email protected] or call the FRYSC Information line at (714) 519-3171.
