The Lucas County Extension Council has been

elected by the people of the county to guide local

educational programming by partnering with

extension staff. From needs assessment through

program implementation and evaluation of outcomes,

the council represents you and your issues. We are

always serving Iowans and we are here for you.

Now. Always.

Serving the People of Lucas County

ISU Extension and Outreach Lucas County began 2020

focused on the following efforts:

Expanding opportunities for youth with increased

participation in 4-H and Clover Sprouts, as well as

providing engaging STEAM education through Van Allen

and Columbus Elementary Schools

Expanding learning opportunities for Lucas County

residents through a variety of programs, including

Private and Commercial Pesticide Applicator Trainings,

Food Preservation 101, and Master Gardener education

Adjusting to the Pandemic

As the COVID-19 pandemic changed daily life, ISU

Extension and Outreach prioritized health and safety as we

developed new ways to bring research-based education to

the people of Lucas County. We remained open for

business and we continued to educate, engage, and serve

Iowans.

Staff locked the doors to the public on March 19th, then

started working remotely on April 10th.

The office reopened to the public on June

22nd. Social distancing measures and

extra sanitization continue to be in place

for staff and the public.

Summer of Gardening kits were delivered

to 17 local youth to provide education on

growing their own food. Each kit included

vegetable and herb seeds, soil, plant

containers, care instructions, and

recipes.

Lucas County hosted a virtual Master

Gardener training in collaboration with 11

other counties. Five new interns will

complete 40 hours of volunteer work in

2021 to become an official Iowa Master

Gardener.

A brand new family cooking program

called “Family Fixin’s” was offered in a

virtual setting. Three families participated

in six hours of education from the comfort

of their own home. Each week, families

prepared a meal with guidance from

Laura Liechty, Iowa 4-H Healthy Living

Specialist, and county 4-H staff while

learning about healthy nutrition and

wellness practices.

Providing a County Fair

Experience

Although the traditional fair was not possible

because of the pandemic, ISU Extension and

Outreach Lucas County worked with our

partners to provide an alternate experience

to demonstrate and showcase the work of

our 4-H youth.

Static Exhibit Day was through drop-off, nonconference

judging.

Clothing and Communications event were judged

virtually, with online interviews conducted via Zoom.

Animals were allowed to leave the fair at the end of the

day they were shown to reduce the amount of contact

4-H’ers had with the public.

Planning for Recovery

ISU Extension and Outreach Lucas County is determined

to help Iowans help each other. Looking ahead to 2021, we

will support Iowans in improving financial security. ISU

Extension and Outreach helps Iowans learn how to find

reliable financial information, make informed decisions,

and follow through to improve their financial health and

well-being.
