T H E C H A L L E N G ETo provide a solution to temperature control which will reliably and economically heat or cool a swimming pool, regardless of ambient air temperature and location.
Enjoyable swimming
Dependable swimming pool temperature control is a key feature to enjoyable swimming.
For a swim to be refreshing and invigorating the pool water must be the right temperature for the swimmer, regardless of the influence of seasonal weather.
Winter heating
During winter, swimming pools continually evaporate water and radiate heat. The combination of these factors causes heat loss which must be replaced through a heater if comfortable water temperatures are to be maintained.
Summer cooling
During summer, swimming pools are subjected to massive solar gain. Coupled with high ambient humidities which prevent pools from cooling through evaporation, swimming pool water will become uncomfortably hot unless dynamically cooled.

Our products
Calorex heat pumps are specifically designed for swimming pool heating and cooling.
This means that all components used in their construction are designed to give maximum efficiency and reliability at swimming pool conditions, even in the toughest climates.
Why heat pumps?
Heat pumps are recognised as the most sustainable way to dynamically heat or cool swimming pool water saving both energy and operating costs.
Unlike electric flow heaters and boilers that can only provide pool heating. Calorex heat pumps will automatically either heat or cool your pool without the need for additional equipment.
As an added bonus, a Calorex heat pump will produce up to five times the energy it consumes, dramatically reducing the energy consumption of your swimming pool.
Rapid installation, flexible operation
Fully self-contained units, Calorex heat pumps easy to install and when it comes to operation, units offer quiet, reliable and safe performance.
Year round operation
Calorex heat pumps have various operating temperatures and will suit different environments and climates.
T H E S O LU T I O NThe answer to this problem is the Calorex range of purpose built heat pumps, chillers and heat cool systems for use in any size pool and plant room.
Benefits
Up to 400% operating cost and carbon saving against direct electric heaters
Up to 47% operating cost saving against fossil fuel boilers
Up to 60% carbon saving against fossil fuel boilers
No flues or fuel storage tanks
Simple installation and long service life
Minimal maintenance
Easy to retrofit to existing swimming pool systems
9
Calorex heat pumps can be used for either heating a pool, cooling a pool or both making them the ultimate temperature control product.

Cold plunge pool water
Cold-water treatments have been used for thousands of years all over the world to maintain physical health. It improves circulation and the immune system, makes for healthy skin and hair and increases energy.
A Calorex water chiller can provide a plunge pool in your home or business with the temperature you need. The chemical resistant cupro-nickel material of the heat exchangers and the use of R134a refrigerant means that these chillers can be connected directly to the pool water circuit and chill the water to10°C. Also, due to the weatherproof construction of the chillers, you have a range of installation options for both plants rooms and outside areas.
When cool is not cold enough
Whether you are a professional footballer, athlete or keen sports person, cold-water immersion is a very popular treatment method for repairing muscles and speeding up recovery from injuries. In certain situations, where 10°C is not cold enough, the water for these treatments is required to be as low as 4°C. Water may also need to be as low as this in some commercial and industrial processes. In these cases, the chillers can be connected in line with a stainless steel plate heat exchanger, and connected to the water. This allows a glycol mix to be used in the chiller to get the temperatures required.
WAT E R C H I L L E R SCalorex water chillers are ideal for plunge pools in spas and water immersion pools for sports recovery.

T H E C H A L L E N G EPool hall air contains moisture which when left unresolved can lead to discomfort, mould or possible structural damage.
Why dehumidify?
An indoor swimming pool is a wonderful leisure and exercise environment but the evaporation from the water surface poses real problems for the building structure. Prolonged exposure to high humidity causes walls, decorative finishes and roofs to deteriorate rapidly.
Personal comfort is also of prime importance. High humidity causes personal discomfort and unless the environment is controlled, bathers will be prevented from enjoying the swimming pool. Bathers appreciate comfortable humidity in the range 55%-65%.
Evaporation
When a pool is uncovered, evaporation is inevitable leading to excess humidity in the air. The problems caused by this excess humidity include discomfort, condensation, misting, damp, mould, mildew, corrosion and building deterioration.
As water evaporates from the pool, it takes a significant amount of heat with it. The traditional approach came in the form of wasteful extraction that removes this energy from the pool hall.
Dehumidifier
A dehumidifier not only removes the humidity but also recovers the energy it contains to help with heating the building. The advanced range of Calorex dehumidifiers provide an efficient and economical solution.

How a Calorex dehumidifier works
The process of dehumidification involves moisture-laden air being drawn into a dehumidifier where the air passes across a refrigerated coil. The air is rapidly cooled below its dew point, condensing the water vapour and recovering its latent heat energy for re-use. The cooled air is then passed across the condenser where it is reheated and returned to the served area at the required lower relative humidity.

Our products
High-performance low-cost Calorex dehumidifiers minimise the need for costly air extraction. Operating on the heat pump principle, these high-performance units recirculate pool air – removing the moisture content and delivering warm, dry air back to the pool hall. By working in this way, they maintain a comfortable humidity, reduce condensation and keep heating costs at the lowest possible level.
Rapid installation, flexible operation
Fully self-contained units, Calorex dehumidifiers require minimal installation. When it comes to operation, units offer quiet, reliable and safe performance. Flexibility is built-in. DH 33 and DH 55 models come with a specially styled barrel type discharge that allows air to be directed in an 80° range between horizontal and vertical, thus allowing installation at high or low level.
Energy saving
Removing humidity from the air enables the Calorex dehumidifier to absorb latent energy and return it to the pool air as useful air heating. Its heat pump technology converts 2.5kW to air heating for every 1kW of electricity consumed – a real bonus for running costs!
So that the best choice can be made, a full range of units is available. Each is supplied with full installation kit, and sound insulation. The Calorex dehumidifier range includes wall mounted and floor standing units.
Low temperature operation
Your pool hall still needs protection when you aren’t using it, but economy dictates that you drop the air heating levels when you are away. The standard defrost function allows operation down to temperatures just above freezing to ensure moisture control even in cold conditions.

Each Calorex unit includes an adjustable humidistat controlling relative humidity (RH) in the ideal range of 55% – 65%. With RH under control, condensation can be minimised by selecting the most appropriate installation from the schematics shown below. Note: vulnerable areas such as windows, roof lights or other cold bridges may form condensation at low external air temperatures unless dry air is blown directly onto them.

T H E C H A L L E N G EProviding co-ordinated environmental control, moisture removal and fresh air provision without wasting energy or compromising operating conditions.
Why control the environment?
There are many important factors to consider when planning and designing an indoor swimming pool. These include optimising the internal environment to provide a comfortable, safe and enjoyable experience for swimmers, safeguarding the building structure from dangerous condensation and humidity related degradation. At the same time, minimising running costs and energy use are critical for commercial and environmental reasons.
Evaporation
Maintaining a comfortable pool environment requires the pool water and air to be heated and held at approximately 28°C and 30°C respectively. Commercial and leisure pools are uncovered for long periods so high rates of evaporation are inevitable leading to excess humidity in the air.
As water evaporates from the pool, it takes a significant amount of heat with it. As a result of this continuous evaporation, uncomfortable humid air containing vast amounts of valuable heat
in the form of latent energy must be removed from the pool hall. The traditional approach came in the form of wasteful extraction that removes this energy from the pool hall, and heat exchangers fed by fossil fuel boilers to continuously replace heat lost from the pool and to heat the fresh air used to replace the extracted warm humid air.
Heat pump heat recovery
In contrast to most indoor environments, swimming pool buildings contain substantially more energy in the air, so a conventional air handling unit is not designed to handle this challenge.
Calorex AHUs, with heat pump dehumidification, not only remove the excess humidity but also recover the energy it contains to recycle it back to the pool water and reheat the air. This creates a continuous heat cycle, which is typically sufficient to provide for all the evaporation heat losses from the pool, removing most of the need to supply new heat to the water. The potential energy savings are huge, helping to keep running costs to a minimum.

Our products
Calorex are a leading manufacturer of swimming pool environmental control systems that provide dehumidification, heat recovery and ventilation solutions based around heat pump technology.
A swimming pool environmental control unit must carry out its primary task of dehumidifying the pool hall air, be designed and constructed to withstand aggressive pool air, and provide a variable quantity of fresh air for occupants.
Calorex AHUs will provide the complete answer to humidity control, water/air temperature control and dynamic fresh air requirements.
By recovering the latent energy in the moisture laden air of a pool hall, a Calorex AHU will return this energy to heat the pool water or use it to assist with the air heating.
Furthermore, there is usually sufficient recovered energy to provide all the evaporation water heating requirements with the surplus used for air heating.
Energy efficiency and CO2 savings
Local authorities and leisure operators find themselves under more pressure than ever to demonstrate effective energy efficiency.
Typically for every unit of power that a Calorex heat pump AHU consumes, it will convert up to three times this amount into usable heat. Compared to traditional extract and ventilation solutions, cost savings of over 50% are achievable while associated CO2 emissions may be reduced by up to 70%.

Calorex water chillers are ideal for cooling water for cold-water showers, water immersion pools, therapy pools and water process cooling.
CO L D P LU N G E P O O L WAT E RCold-water treatments have been used for thousands of years all over the world to maintain physical health.

T H E C H A L L E N G EAtmospheric air contains moisture which is a problem to materials and manufacturing processes.
Protect your environment
Even when you cannot see it, moisture in the form of water vapour is all around us, held in suspension in the air. The relative humidity of the air in many cases determines the extent of corrosion of certain materials, the speed at which moulds develop and the rate of increase of bacteria that cause decay. Most materials and goods are best stored under cool dry conditions.
Corrosion speed of steel
Relative humidity
Relative humidity (RH) is the expression used to define how much water vapour can be held in the air at a given temperature as a percentage of what it could contain at saturation (100% RH). That is when the relative humidity reaches the level at which air can hold no more moisture. The maximum amount can vary according to its temperature – warmer air is capable of holding more moisture than colder air.
A false economy
Traditionally the problem was disguised by the use of heat or ventilation. This process is exceptionally energy inefficient and reliant on introducing outside air that is generally not suitable unless expensively heated. Drying by traditional heating involves continuously warming a stream of outside air on a constant ‘in and out’ cycle.

A better way
Dehumidification is much more sophisticated than heating. It recirculates the same air and physically removes moisture from it. This alleviates the need to continuously reheat incoming air. Not only that, a dehumidifier will cleverly convert energy taken out of the room as moisture (latent energy), to create ‘sensible energy’ that can be used to heat the room, accelerating the drying process.
Problem solved
Our wide range of units and operating temperatures ensure there is a system to fit every need. From high tech problems requiring sophisticated ‘total loss’ or ‘keep dry recirculation’ systems to a simple off the shelf mobile dehumidifier to plug in and go – our Calorex sales team are unique problem solvers in their field.
T H E S O LU T I O NThe answer to this problem is Calorex's wide range of dehumidifiers suitable for every environment from warehouses and sub-stations to data centres, museums and garages.

47
Take control of humidity and condensation with our leading range of dehumidifiers.
48
Refrigerant dehumidifier
The process of dehumidification involves moisture-laden air (return air) being drawn into a dehumidifier where the air passes across a refrigerated coil. The air is rapidly cooled below its dew point, condensing the water vapour and recovering its latent heat energy for re-use. The cooled air is then passed across the condenser where it is reheated and (supply air) returned to the served area at the required lower humidity.
Advantages:
Low energy consumption
Minimal maintenance required
High specific moisture extraction (kg/kWh)
Easy installation
Small diameter condensate drain
Disadvantages:
Low performance in cold conditions below 3°C
Smaller dehumidifiers less suitable for ducting
Where used:
Generally, in recirculation applications where the humidity requirement is above 40% RH.
Preservation during storage
Data centres
Substations and switch gear rooms
Clothes drying
Food drying
Swimming pools
Where not used:
Single pass (total loss) ventilations systems
Below 40% RH
Below 3°C
Explosive environments
Desiccant dehumidifier
The air to be dehumidified (process air), passes through a slowly rotating silica gel rotor. The desiccant material attracts the moisture to its surface, removing it from the air stream (dry air). A second, smaller air stream (reactivation air) usually heated to around 120°C, is required to remove the moisture from the rotor. This (wet) air must then be exhausted to atmosphere using a duct. Slowly rotating the rotor through both airstreams creates a continuous dehumidification process.
Advantages:
High moisture removal rate in a single air pass
Can achieve very low absolute humidity levels
Can work in low temperatures
Can work in very low humidity
Disadvantages:
High energy consumption
Low specific moisture extraction (kg/kWh)
Ducting from/to outside for reactivation air and wet air
High rotor replacement costs
Where used:
Generally, where a very low relative humidity or absolute humidity is required, and/or where the operating temp is below 3°C.
Pharmaceutical
Food
Confectionery
Specialist manufacturing that requires very low RH
Low temp storage and freezer rooms
Where not used:
Recirculation applications that require RH above 40%
Applications that are sensitive to high supply air temperature
Swimming pools
Sites with limited power supply (unless mains gas or steam reactivation is available)
Areas that have no access to outside walls
