City University of Seattle (CityU) was conceived of and developed for the purpose of providing educational opportunities to underserved populations

Our new strategic plan, CityU 2020, continues the construction upon that foundation and allows us to effectively align all we do to ensure student success in the rapidly changing higher education landscape We will execute our strategic plan as an institution focused primarily on the needs of students in the State of Washington, and as a proud affiliate of the National University System Working collaboratively with our partners in the National University System allows us to provide better programs and opportunities for our students, our faculty and staff, and the communities we serve

CityU was founded on the principles that learning is a lifelong process and should be accessible to everyone Accessibility, lifelong learning, and student success are achieved by providing an exceptional student experience, and we will do this with effective strategies that bring our mission and vision to life for all our students and partners:

• Align our programs and services with market needs, particularly in the Pacific Northwest and Canada

• Build on our already nationally renowned graduate programs, to further differentiate the impacts that we are making in students’ lives

• Collaborate with our National University System partners to enhance choice and customization for our students, faculty, and staff

• Capture the locational advantage that Seattle offers and provide more international students the opportunity to experience our city and our university

CityU has a proud history of serving underserved and non-traditional students, who are now growing at a faster rate than what we have typically referred to as the “traditional” student We will continue our history of service to the underserved and adult learner, but it will require continuous innovation that builds on the flexibility and creativity that is already a hallmark of our programs, delivery systems, and student services

As we move toward 2020, our strategic plan strives to ensure student access and success

EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL SCANS

• Environmental Scan - Examines the external landscape and identifies trends that present both opportunities and threats

• Organizational Scan - Assesses internal strengths and weaknesses; incorporates financial and organizational analysis; and includes critical feedback from faculty and staff

ENVIRONMENTAL SCAN FINDINGS

Unpredictable Public FundingOver the past decade, public funding for higher education in the State of Washington has been erratic, impacting public institutions and the number of options from which students may choose This creates opportunity for CityU to serve students who don’t have access.

Evolving Workforce NeedsSeattle is a dynamic marketplace that is the fifth fastest growing economy in the U S Labor market demands in Seattle and across the state are shifting rapidly, prompting the need for new programs and a 21st Century labor force

International StudentsU S -styled higher education is still attractive to international students whose numbers continue to increase. CityU’s service to international populations and its support for English language learners enrich our communities and the experience of our domestic students

Competition and TechnologyThe number of public and private higher education providers in the Pacific Northwest has grown with the region Internet and mobile technologies are but two examples of how today’s students learn and what they desire in their educational experience Innovative models that facilitate access, delivery and success are all ongoing necessities for a differentiated, CityU experience

ORGANIZATIONAL SCAN FINDINGS

An internal organizational examination allows CityU to align its programs and services with the students and community we serve

PartnershipsCityU has developed and continues to enjoy a number of key partnerships throughout the region, including with several of the state’s premier private employers and its largest military base The University continues to create innovative programs – including competency-based programs — to support its partners

RecognitionThe university has earned a number of high national rankings and enjoys recognition from top accreditation agencies in the fields of business, technology, counseling and education. CityU was named a Top-50 online university by US News and World Report for the third consecutive year in 2016 Such accolades help place CityU at the forefront of our competitive set

Serving our RegionExpansion will come through new programs and educational opportunities that align with the unique needs of our community. Over 57% of adult Seattle residents already hold bachelor’s degrees Many of the members of our community are more interested in study at the graduate level in specialized and rapidly expanding fields.

CompletionCityU’s completion rate is among the highest in the nation. This statistic is a powerful indicator of CityU’s drive to ensure that its students finish the programs in which they enroll.
