"An Information Technology degree is valuable simply because a lot of businesses need a lot of people with IT skills. The Australian Computer Society is projecting a shortfall of something like 1000 computer security and data mining specialists for the next few years. The industry is crying out for people. New technology can come along, and the software can be copied, but getting people to actually drive it cannot simply be replicated, it’s something that must be trained. Our IT degrees enable our students to fill these positions, and open their eyes to the potential of what’s possible in this sector. I highly value being able to give them insight to what’s actually happening behind the scenes. You pull aside the curtain, and maybe there’s just a small man saying “don’t look at the man behind the curtain!”; there’s a lot of that going on. It’s always good to point out “this is what the textbook said, but this is what actually happened”, and to encourage critical thinking.

Our students enjoy a campus where students are not just numbers in a crowd. Here students know who the lecturer is, and the lecturer can recognise every student's face. It is a much more personable experience that enhances their learning."

Leading to Work Program Preparing graduates for the dynamically changing job market

With employers continuing to express the need for closer links between industry and higher education, JCU Brisbane introduced the Leading to Work Program. This Program is offered exclusively to JCU Brisbane Bachelor of Business students, with a key focus on developing professional skills for employability within their field of study.

In class, students will have the opportunity to work as part of a team on industry projects and work with corporate leaders. Students also participate in industry visits and other professional business tours. Professional internships are a key component of the Leading to Work Program. This valuable opportunity sees top performing students gain hands-on training in an Australian business. Students will work as a member of the team and will be given the opportunity to develop professional skills by undertaking set tasks allocated by the employer.

To prepare and equip our students to be employer-preferred, work-ready graduates, JCU Brisbane encourages students to engage with industry professionals throughout their studies.

“JCU Brisbane is a smaller campus but it is very useful for you to find a job. Especially as it is leading the way in employer satisfaction, according to a national survey. I recommend studying in Australia, especially JCU Brisbane as it’s been an amazing experience for my life. Through my classes, I have been able to go on fieldtrips to places like Dreamworld at the Gold Coast and see firsthand the practical elements of the theory I had learnt in class.”Jingfei WuChinaBACHELOR OF BUSINESS (HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM MANAGEMENT)

“I love what I am studying so much, it’s completely new and exciting for me. The professors here are so knowledgeable, and always ready to help you if you have any questions. Their teaching methods are very different to that in Mongolia and I am really enjoying it so much.

I would recommend JCU Brisbane because of the amazing professors and also because class sizes are intimate, which gives you plenty of interaction and engagement with the teaching staff. This is something I haven't experienced at other universities and a reason why I believe JCU Brisbane will help me suceed.”

“Studying at JCU Brisbane has been the best decision I have made because the facilities here are great, and the support we get from the Joblinx department is amazing. Also, the great friendships I have fostered here has really made my time worthwhile.

My favourite part of my degree is the professors here! They are so helpful and supportive. Whatever questions we may have, they answer promptly and they also stay back after the lectures so that we can talk to them. I think that is really good.”

Important Information

Student VisasHow to obtain an Australian visa for study at JCU BrisbaneYou or your Agent (on your behalf) will apply for your visa directly with the Department of Home Affairs. All international students apply for a single student visa (subclass 500), regardless of their chosen course of study. What does this mean for you?• Mandatory online lodgement of student visa

applications• Student document checklist tool (this tool allows

you to provide evidence to ensure you meet financial and English language requirements)

• An immigration risk framework is used to guide the evidence of English language and financial capacity that a student needs to provide with their visa application

Key requirements for student visa (subclass 500):• Genuine temporary entrant (GTE) requirement• Enrolment in a registered course of study• Financial capacity and English language

proficiency• Health and character• Health insurance• No debt to the Australian GovernmentFor more information, please refer to The Department of Home Affairs www.homeaffairs.gov.au Working as a StudentUnder Australian immigration regulations, students on a student visa may work up to 40 hours per fortnight during university teaching periods and without restriction during university vacations.Permission to work in Australia will be automatically included when the student is granted a student visa.

For further information regarding your working rights please refer to www.fairwork.gov.au

Working Rights for PartnersIf a student’s spouse is joining them, they will also be able to work whilst the student is studying in Australia and can apply for a permission to work visa. The work conditions for the spouse will vary depending on the degree that is being studied. Bringing FamilySpouses and children can join the student in Australia but each family member must be added to the student visa application, and certain conditions will apply depending on the age of each family member. If the children will be attending school while in Australia, school fees will need to be paid for them. For more information, visit: www.eqi.com.au

ESOS Act and Tuition Protection ServiceAs a provider of education services to international students in Australia, James Cook University is required to comply with the Education Services for Overseas Students Act (ESOS Act) and the National Code of Practice for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students (The National Code). The ESOS legislation and National Code, specify minimum standards for the delivery of courses to students in Australia studying on a student visa and regulate what information must be given to existing and prospective international students, what support must be provided to existing students, what records are kept and what information is to be given to government agencies about international students. For more information visit the ESOS Act webpage.JCU’s Tuition Fee Policy for International Students applies to overseas students who do not commence their studies with JCU, or withdraw before their course is completed. The policy sets out the circumstances in which a student is entitled to a refund as required under the ESOS Act, and can be found at: www.jcu.edu.au/policy/student-services

Important InformationThe Tuition Protection Service (TPS) is a placement and refund service for international students studying on a student visa which also operates under the ESOS Act. On the rare occasions that a provider is unable to deliver a course an international student has paid for and does not

meet its legal obligations to make alternative course replacements or provide a refund, the TPS will assist students to find an alternative place or, if this is not possible, provide a refund of any unspent tuition fees. For further information see: www.tps.gov.au

Deferral, Temporary Suspension or Cancellation of EnrolmentThe ESOS National Code and student visa conditions contain restrictions on when students, or JCU, can defer, suspend or cancel a student enrolment. Deferring commencement of study, or taking a leave of absence once studies have commenced can only take place when there are compassionate or compelling reasons for doing so. A “compassionate or compelling reason” is something which is beyond the student’s control and which has, or will have, an impact on academic progress or wellbeing. The university may suspend a student temporarily, enforcing a break from study, in certain circumstances. For more information on deferral, suspension and cancellation of study see our website.
