2 JUNE 2020 Grand Knight’s Message
Dear Brother Knights, Here is some news we’ve been awaiting! https://www.rcbo.org/diocese-of-orange-announces-limited-public-masses-can-begin-on-sunday-june-14-in-phased-approach/ The Diocese of Orange announced today that public Masses can begin in Or-ange County on the solemnity of Corpus Christi, Sunday, June 14 (including Saturday June 13 Vigil Masses) in a phased-in approach with measures in
place to safeguard public health. In addition, the Bishop of Orange, Kevin W. Vann, ex-tends a dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday and Holy Days of Obli-gation until such time as it is deemed safe to have large gatherings at Mass. The month of June concludes our Columbian Year 2019/2020. Despite the disruption to operations due to the prohibition on mass gatherings, we have adapted to virtual “ZOOM” meetings as a means to overcome the barriers to in-person meetings. We have persevered in our charitable efforts: the donations you approved May 26th are being issued from our checking account by Treasurer Terry Nieuwlandt and Financial Secretary Felix Piro. Be-fore the COVID-19 pandemic we gathered at Mater Dolorosa for spiritual reflection under the leadership of Tom Woore and his team of co-captains. Our charitable donations are possible in large part due to the efforts of Rodd Kliner and Walt Hill who organize and lead our Pancake Breakfast and Lenten Fish Dinners. Thanks to Deacon Ken Kleckner for leading our Corpus Christi celebration and the Monthly Adoration of the Blessed Sacra-ment. Thanks to Naz LeBlanc for spearheading the Family of the Month program here at St Josephs church. As Council 10287 brothers we can take pride in the charitable efforts in support of the Inter Faith Soup Kitchen lead by Larry Schmidt and Deacon Ken Kleckner. Our efforts in sup-port of Life Programs are led by Walter Hill and include monthly Rosary Prayer vigils and the “Pennies from Heaven” fund drive. A Quality of Life program recognized at the Cali-fornia State Knights convention is the Special Needs drive which raised over $600,000 in California. Don Palmer lead our parish drive and supported the training of Orange County Knights conducted at St Josephs last August. Reflecting on our accomplishments of the 2019/2020 Columbian Year, I want to mention that we are well positioned to achieve the Star Council Award for this year. The Star Award rests on achievement in three areas, insurance, programs and membership. Thanks to our Field Agent Kevin Garza we have met our goal of insurance to earn the Founders Award for insurance growth. Thanks to the brother Knights mentioned above we have con-ducted many programs to satisfy the requirements for the Columbian Award. Thanks and congratulations to Darryl Jenkins for leading our council to achieve the membership goal needed to qualify for the Father McGivney award for membership growth. I look forward to renewed fraternal activities as we open St Joseph’s parish under the lead-ership of our Pastor Father Miguel Hernandez and in following the guidelines as described in the opening paragraph above. Serving Christ together, Hugh Lynch, Grand knight St Joseph’s Council 10287

June 16th ZOOM Presentation.. 7PM
According to our Deacon Ken Kleckner, several Deacons have
been involved in bringing the issue of human trafficking to the
attention of our Orange County Community. Deacon Joe Sul-
livan has a slide show presentation prepared. Deacon Joe rep-
resents the Diocese of Orange on the Faith-Based Action Com-
mittee of the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force,
which is a partnership of law enforcement and social services
agencies in Orange County. The State Council of the Knights
has given their support to this effort, too. The event will last
about 90 minutes which includes the presentation and time
for Q & A. Deacon Joe plans to email the INVITATION to
our Grand Knight who will arrange the distribution to our
council.
9 The Patron Field Agent’s Message
“But let’s be fair…”
Hi My brothers and Lady Knights,
NEVER INVEST IN AN ANNUITY!! You’ve no doubt seen this kind of headline in the financial pages or you’ve seen pop-up ads on your computer or you’ve heard some friend repeat what he’s heard from his buddy’s uncle. Are they serious?
Let’s start with the basics: An annuity is a tax-favored savings instrument. The government gives it spe-cial tax treatment because it’s designed for retirement income. An annuity can be qualified or in other words, funded with money that you have not yet paid taxes on, like an IRA or an RRSP in Canada. Or non-qualified, that is, funded with money you’ve already paid the tax on. Like money you take from your paycheck or out of your savings account. Either way, the tax on the growth in your Knights of Columbus annuity each year is deferred…you pay no current tax on it and pay only when you withdraw money.
I’ll tell you that I think an annuity is a is a great product in the right situation. Especially a Knights of Co-lumbus annuity. In addition to tax deferred growth, here are a few more reasons why I think that way:
1. Your minimum interest rate is guaranteed…for life! There is a floor that the interest
rate will never drop below. The good news is that we’ve always paid a higher current in-
terest rate than the guarantee. This feature means nobody has ever lost a dime in a
Knights of Columbus annuity…and never will!
2. Your principal is guaranteed by the Knights. Now that kind of guarantee is only as
good as the company backing it…and we’ve had 40+ years of Superior ra)ngs from A. M.
Best for financial strength. (As of January 2019, rated A+ Superior by A. M. Best)
3. You are charged no administra)ve fees each year…100% of your money goes to work
for you earning interest from day one.
4. Even though annui)es are designed for long-term growth, a6er one year you can ac-
cess 10% of the value without any KofC penalty.
5. Owners of annui)es name a beneficiary; this means that at death, the proceeds by-
pass probate. This saves )me and usually money, too.
6. You can enjoy an income that you (and if you wish, your wife) can never outlive!
But let’s be fair; an annuity is not the answer every time. It’s not a short-term product. It’s not designed to be a “put and take” account where you stick some money in and then take it out a short time later. There is a reducing early withdrawal penalty over the first seven years if you take out more than the 10% free withdrawal. That feature, in all annuities, not just the KofC, is to encourage people to leave the mon-ey alone until retirement age. So, although there are situations where an annuity is not the proper prod-uct, there are many where it is…And we haven’t even talked about triple compounding, protection from creditors and other features. How do you know if an annuity is right for you? Meet with me and let’s look at your goals. It might be the perfect fit.
Where do you keep your safe money?
May Gods Love and Grace be with all of you always!
Vivat Jesus!
