BUC NOTES

WE ARE “ETSU”The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics would like to ask both the print and broadcast media to honor our request to be called “ETSU” throughout the 2018 season. East Tennessee State in first reference is acceptable, but subsequent references should be ETSU. On TV graphics, please use ETSU. Our full nickname is the Buccaneers, but “Bucs” is also encouraged.

NEW LOOK BUCSThe Bucs enter 2021 after a 12-3 record in 2020. The Bucs are led by head coach Joe Pennucci who is in his fourth season at the helm of Buccaneer baseball. The 43-man roster consists of 20 newcomers and 12 true freshmen. The Bucs will open their campaign at home for the 11th straight season and hold a 7-3 record in that span.

RENEWING THE RIVALRY The Bucs have played more games against Appalachian State than any other team in program history. App State has won 20 more contests in the series (78-58), while the two teams have tied once. The Bucs won the first matchup 8-7 in 1955 and the last, 4-0 in 2019. The win two years ago is the only time the Bucs and the Mountaineers have faced in the Pennucci era.

THREE WINNING SEASONS?After recording winning seasons each in 2017, ‘18 and ‘19, the Bucs secured three winning seasons in a row for the first time since the 1981-83 seasons. In those years, ETSU went 44-17, 34-19 and 20-18, respectively. In 2017, ETSU finished 30-29 and in 2018 began the Joe Pennucci era with a 28-25 mark.

ABOUT APP STATEThe Mountaineers are 2-1 after opening weekend. App State faced Winthrop on the road and fell in the final game of the series, 10-9 after sweeping the season-opening doubleheader on day one. Phillip Cole leads App with a .500 batting average and a .615 on-base percentage. Alex Leshock and Andrew Greckel are the two other Mountaineers with above a .300 average. Quinton Marintez and Noah Hall are the two pitchers for App with a 0.00 ERA and more than three innings on the mound.

SOCON PRESEASON POLLThe Bucs were slated fifth along with UNCG in the Southern Conference preseason coaches poll. The Bucs tallied three preseason All-SoCon selections in Jake Lyle (Spring Hill, Tenn.), Jake Madole (Hampstead, N.C.) and Matthew Mercer (Chattanooga, Tenn.). The media also picked the Bucs to finish fifth.

MIDWEEK MATCHUP ON THE MOUNDNathanial Tate will make his first career start in blue and gold for ETSU on Tuesday. The 2020 SoCon All-Preseason Selection led all ETSU relievers with a 1.29 ERA last season. Tate tossed seven innings and allowed six hits, one run and struck out nine. Appalachian State’s probable starter, Cam Roberts, started one game last season and made five appearances out of the ‘pen. He held a 6.11 ERA, a 2-1 record through 17.2 IP. The redshirt-sophomore had eight strikeouts and eight walks.

ALL ABOUT THE BEAMJunior outfielder David Beam is poised for a solid spring, as he was named first team all-confer-ence by the coaches in 2019. As a freshman, Beam batted .283 in 38 appearances and was one of three Bucs to have an on-base percentage above .400 — finishing at .401. Beam batted .292 in 19 conference appearances two seasons ago. Last season, Beam had his best start to a season with a .314 batting average and seven extra-base hits. J. Acosta Vineland, NJ 552.5 miles 8 hrs 40 minLYLE’S COMEBACK All-SoCon Preseason First-Team selection, Jake Lyle took advantage of an extra year and will be the starting third baseman for the Blue and Gold this season. He holds a .287 career batting average at ETSU and has started all 70 games since he got to Johnson City two years ago. The Spring Hill, Tenn. native had five games with two or more stolen bases and logged a team-high seven multi-hit games. He scored 13 runs and recorded 13 RBI. The starting third basemen was ranked fifth in the nation with 12 stolen bases. This season, Lyle is 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts.

QUICK FACTS AND NOTES

MERCER IN RELIEF Mercer, ETSU’s lone All-SoCon Preseason Second-Team selection, was a strong arm out of the bullpen for the Bucs last year. In his four appearances, he held a 2-0 record and struck out 12 batters in 8.2 innings of work. The Chattanooga native concluded the shortened season with a 4.15 ERA allowing four earned runs and recorded at least one strikeout in all four appearances. In his one appearance this season, Mercer was perfect in one inning and set down the NKU Norse in order.

KING’S STRONG SOPHOMORE DEBUTSophomore shortstop, Ashton King was one of two Buccaneers to record a hit in all three games against the Norse. King went 4-for-10 with two home runs and two doubles. His home runs in consecutive games are the first time he’s accomplished that feat and is the second time in his career he tallied 4+ RBI in a game.

CADY’S CONSISTENCY Ethan Cady matched King’s batting average going 4-for-10 at the dish. Cady recorded a double and a triple in the season opener and reached base in half of his plate appearances. ETSU’s start-ing right fielder has a .700 slugging percentage and a stolen base on the season.

HODGE’S BUCCANEER DEBUTIncoming junior transfer, Bryce Hodge is riding a three-game hit streak into the game vs App State. Hodge hit .364 in against the Norse and scored two runs on four hits.

SIX PLAYERS LOOKING TO CONTINUE THEIR STREAK Kyle Richardson, Ethan Cady, Jake Lyle, David Beam, Bryce Hodge and Ashton King all reached base in each of the three games in ETSU’s opening weekend. Additionally, Drew Haynie reached base in both of his starts and is riding that two-game streak into Tuesday.

LATE INNING PRODUCTIONThe Bucs outscored the Norse 8-0 in the final four innings of the game throughout the weekend. Additionally, ETSU outscored NKU 8-3 in the opening third of the game. The only two innings the Bucs didn’t see any run production in the opening series was in the fourth and fifth innings when NKU outscored them, 6-0.

COVERING THE MAPETSU Head Coach Joe Pennucci jokingly told the media that he would “travel to Pluto” to get the right player for his team. Staying in North America, Pennucci added players from 11 states/districts/provinces for this season’s roster.

ETSU roster breakdown by state:TN - 21 AZ - 1GA - 7 NC - 7NJ -3 AL - 1CA - 1 IN - 1FL - 1

NOT SO CLOSE TO HOMEA number of players calling Johnson City home this spring come from all across the nation, including two from over 2,000 miles away and seven others from at least 500 miles.

HEAD COACH JOE PENNUCCI

On July 10, 2017, the ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced that former Stony Brook associate head coach Joe Pennucci has been named the new head coach of the Buccaneers’ baseball program.

Through two seasons at the helm, Pennucci owns a 62-46 record. In 2019, Pennucci’s squad finished with a 34-21 record, marking the best record for the program since 2011. Furthermore, the 2019 team set new a Thomas Stadium record with a 22-9 home record — among the best home records in the nation.

Pennucci previously served as recruiting coordinator at Stony Brook in 2017 and helped guide the program to multiple NCAA Regionals over the last 12 seasons – including a trip to the College World Series in 2012.

Following a 28-25 record in his first season, the skipper brought national prominence to the Bucs in year two. On March 25, ETSU received six votes for the USA Today Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and remained among the voted teams for two weeks after jumping to a 22-6 record halfway through the campaign.

Furthermore, Pennucci helped ETSU cap its third straight winning season in 2019 for the first time since ETSU completed winning seasons 1981-83.

Under Pennucci’s watch, the ETSU pitching staff had the 11th lowest ERA in the nation at 3.48 — led by senior ace Micah Kaczor at 2.13 to rank second in the Southern Conference. Kaczor ranks second in ETSU history for single season ERA and third in career ERA (3.42). The current career ERA is upcoming senior Landon Knack at 2.60, who Pennucci signed for 2019 out of Walters State Community College.

In that 2019 season, Pennucci swept three straight opponents for the first time in ETSU history, opening the season with three-game sweeps over Iona, Wagner and LIU-Brooklyn. ETSU also won its first seven series with a 19-2 record in that span, taking two of three from Georgia State in Atlanta and George-town in Johnson City while sweeping both NJIT and SoCon rival Western Carolina at home.

Among his marquee wins that season, Pennucci and the Bucs defeated No. 23 Tennessee at Knoxville in a 6-5 thriller. The win marked ETSU’s first victory over a ranked opponent since 2014 while also giving the Bucs their third straight victory over Tennessee when playing in Knoxville.

ETSU turned in a winning record in Pennucci’s debut year, finishing 28-25 overall with an 11-13 mark in conference play. Pennucci’s squad racked up over half its wins away from home, going 14-12 in true road contest coupled with two neutral site wins.

The first-year skipper added signature victories to his resume last season, knocking off the Tennessee Volunteers twice in Knoxville and defeating teams such as Tulane, Memphis, Marshall, UNCG, Samford and Florida Gulf Coast. The team also swept a key non-conference series against Winthrop, who won the Big South regular season championship the previous season.

Under Pennucci’s watch, a plethora of individual records, milestone and league-leading marks were set last season. Among those accolades, senior Chris Cook finished among the conference leaders with a .364 batting average and broke the ETSU all-time hits record in his second to last career game. Cook finished the season on a 12-game hitting streak, passing the record of 307 set by Paul Hoilman in 2011 to finish with 310...79 of which came this past season.

In his two seasons, ETSU has had five first team all-conference selections, two second team selections, one all-tournament selection and four all-freshmen.
