THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER - MAY 10, 2020

Stones That Live

A good artist can take something other people overlook and make it beautiful—a leaf, a pebble, or even a scuff or a scratch. An artist knows how to set something simple in an environment where its inner beauty shines. God is the ultimate artist. God can take each of us, no matter how beautiful or ugly we are outside or inside and turn us into a vision of glory.

The First Letter of Peter calls us stones, material that can be overlooked or used for building. Jesus was a living stone that many people rejected. But God the artist found what was precious in Jesus the stone. The letter says, “like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices.” If we come to Christ, the living stone, he will fashion us into something remarkable.

Other people may not appreciate our inner beauty. They may not notice the gifts we have. They may not know how we can grace their lives. They may even make us feel useless. But God finds us most useful. We are living stones, pleasing to God through Jesus Christ. Some people overlook what good Christians think and do. They build arsenals rather than feed the hungry. They sever relationships rather than grant forgiveness. They squander time rather than use it for the good. But God appreciates the good we do and builds us up as living stones.

THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER - MAY 10, 2020

Are You Thirsting For God?

Are you someone who would like to learn more about your Catholic Faith? Do you know someone not baptized or baptized in a non-Catholic Christian tradition, who is thirsting for what it means to become Catholic?

Do you know someone already Catholic but has not yet re-ceived Confirmation & Communion?

Others may be thirsting too…

For each of us faith is a journey marked with moments of conversion along the way…we move from unbelief to initial faith, from sin to repentance, from painful isolation to the joyful experience of a loving community, from fear to love.

Faith, conversion, repentance, celebration and community ---five basic elements that are present in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). The RCIA provides a setting where the journey of faith and moments of conversion can be cele-brated within the local Church community.

RCIA is a place to ask questions and seek understanding. Come and See! Invite a friend! All are Welcome! RCIA meets Sunday’s at Little Flower School from 10:15 A.M. to 11:15 A.M. For more information, contact the Parish Office at (301)994-0525.

Like Mary and Joseph, families have a

mission to welcome Jesus into their

homes and lives, to “listen to him, speak

with him, take care of him, protect him

and grow with him, and in this way

improve the world.” -Pope Francis

Sunday Faith Formation serves all parish children.

Weekly sessions for Pre-K through 8th Grade meet

on Sundays from 10:15am to 11:20am. Two years

of faith formation are usually required prior to

reception of the Sacraments of First Reconciliation,

Eucharist and Confirmation. We always welcome

new team members as catechists, substitutes, hall

monitors and teen assistants.

THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER - MAY 10, 2020

Knights of Columbus

Grand Knight Charles Shilling

301-535-8339 [email protected]

Five ways to lead your family in faith

More than ever Knights are called to build their domestic church. While public masses are suspended, activities that are normally part of our local parish are gone. But Jesus’ call for us as Christian families — to serve as domestic churches in teaching the faith, growing in virtue, and evangelization — still exists. By following the five steps below, Knights can become true leaders of their domestic churches, not just during this time but for their entire lives. 1. Start and end the day in prayer. Every good thing starts and ends in prayer - Knights should start every morning leading his family in prayer and end every night the same way. Knights should also regularly lead families in praying the rosary together. 2. Schedule time together, as a family. Quality time spent together as a family is essential to a strong domestic church. That’s why it’s important to plan time together as a family — a family dinner, family movie night or a family prayer night! Just as important is quality time with your spouse. Carve out time every day, even if just five minutes, for praying together as a couple. 3. Keep holy reminders. There are a lot of mundane tasks that occur in our homes — but even during school work or working from home, we are called to bring our faith into everything we do. Whether a prayer card or a cross, these serve as a reminder to refocus on our Lord and keep a spirit of prayer throughout the day. 4. Make an act of charity. There’s a lot that families are sacrificing right now, but these sacrifices have the power to help those in need. If you have the means, consider using funds you would otherwise use on events restricted by social distancing to support your local parish, contribute to the Leave No Neighbor Behind Fund or another charity. 5. Lead in hope. Faith without hope is sure to be short-lived, and in this time of uncertainty and loss it can be easy to fall into hopelessness. As Knights, we are called to remember the hope offered us by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As heads of the domestic church, Share this hope of faith your family.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

by St. Alphonsus Liguori

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in

the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to

receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You

sacramentally, come at least spiritually in-

to my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already

there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from

You.

Amen.
