The Local Studies Service holds an extensive range of sources for learningabout the Bradford District over the past one hundred years, a century thathas seen more changes than any other period of our history.Our collection represents the progress of the years, with a gradual narration

of the times beginning in the dusty tomes of the Edwardian era and carrying through onto the modern day website and CD-ROM.This booklet offers a small selection of the many resources available, from books and maps, to original items such as oral history tapes and transcripts, university theses, and local authority documents.

BLIGH, Margaret B 920 EURDr Eurlich of Bradford1960A personal and professional history ofDr. Frederick William Eurich, written byhis daughter. Eurich was a Germanimmigrant who was raised in Bradfordand later lived in Ilkley. He risked his life to discover the source of the

Topics includeindustry, famous people, buildings(mainly hospitals), geology, plant life,etc. Also contains two articles by pastBradford librarians Butler Wood andW.H. Barraclough. Report of the Work of the FemaleSanitary Inspectors 1902-11B 614 FEMEmployed by the Bradford Corporation,the Female Sanitary Inspectorsrecorded the progress of women withyoung families who lived in the poorer,back-to-back housing areas of Bradford. Reports on Bradford’s two main hospitals, plus developments in local health care.An Experiment in Municipalisation: St. Luke’s Hospital Bradford, 1918-1921, an unpublished research paper by Paul Etherington from 1985. Handing control of hospitals to local

government was the concept of Dr. John Buchan, Medical Officer of Health for Bradford from 1913. The Ministry of Health, then only recently established, was influenced by Buchan’s vision after a report on Bradford’s progress. From 1876 to nearly one hundred yearslater, Medical Officer of Health Re-ports were produced, documenting the standard of the city’s health care. In1972, these became the Annual Reports of the Director of Public Health. The Local Studies Library holdsa full compliment of these documents,as well as Area Health AuthorityReports, minutes and agendas.Bradford Infirmary Reports – Mainlyfinancial, documenting subscribers anddonations made to the voluntaryhospital, these reports also featuretallies of patients and details ofoperations for each year. The LocalStudies Library holds volumes from themid-nineteenth century to theintroduction of the NHS in the 1940s.We also hold contemporary reports onthe smallpox epidemic in the 1960s.

Feather wasn born and raised in Bradford, which is also the birthplace of the Independent Labour Party. Such historicalarticles chart the development of theindustry, and provide an overview of the progress of cities like Bradford.When the mills were no longer beingused for their primary purpose, towardsthe end of the twentieth century,Bradford hoped to recycle the buildingsas alternative resources.
