PresenterPresentation NotesThe book that you have selected this year, Cell Phones in Classrooms is a great collection of practical case studies that show various tools and their uses in classrooms today

The focus on devices and applications is a starting point in 21st Century Learning and Teaching but it is really just the tip of the iceberg

  • Move beyond the tools to focus on skills and then creating and networked learning

    Tools

    Skills

    Creating and

    Networking

PresenterPresentation NotesIf we break down the layers of the ice berg there are 3 areas that we should look at

The small ice cap above the water that is easy to see is the tools this includes the devices and the applications

Just below the ice berg cap is where the ice begins to expand and this is reflective of the skills that we want students to learn

The greatest component of the iceberg lies well beyond our typical reach and this is where we want to get to, where students create new knowledge and participate in networked learning

  • Whats the missing piece? Moving from lower order skills to

    higher order thinking skills

PresenterPresentation NotesIf we look at Blooms revised taxonomy we see that we are moving from remembering to creating but in H.S. in Ontario we are often stuck at the lower level where we continue to teach facts and we rarely get to the higher order levels

The missing piece to allow us to move to higher order thinking skills may be the tools that did not exist until now

PresenterPresentation NotesKathy Schrock outlines how through free tools from Google we can now cover all areas of Blooms Taxonomy it goes well beyond Google Search at the lowest level

PresenterPresentation NotesSimilarly there are apps, many of them fee, that can now be accessed on iPads for those that have iPads or iPods- It should be noted that on any given day in our Board we have over 14,000 devices connecting to our wireless network, and over 4000 of these are iPod touches brilliant devices for $200 that include camera, video camera, and access to digital resources

PresenterPresentation NotesA movement away from desktop computers and expensive software like Microsoft Office, we can now access many free web 2.0 tools from any web browser

    http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/

  • Tool selection is a starting point What skills should we focus on?

PresenterPresentation NotesWe need to spend time learning and experimenting with tools and finding tools that work for us the tool is not important, it will change, but we do have to acknowledge that it takes time to learn tools before we can go deeper into the appropriate use of tools

  • The 4 Cs Partnership for 21st Century Skills

    Critical Thinking / Problem Solving

    Communication Collaboration Creativity

PresenterPresentation NotesHere is a great starting point the partnership for 21st Century Learning4 key skills to complement the traditional 3 RsCommunication not just written, but oral, and digital new definitions of literacyCollaboration key skills to be able to work with and connect with others this is not achieved by having students sit in rows of desks and working individuallyCritical Thinking and problem solving as information becomes readily available, the key skill is problem solving and critical thinking these skills do not necessarily need technologyCreativity
