My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!
In two weeks’ time, on September 4th, Pope Francis will declare at the Vatican Blessed Teresa of Kolkata a saint. The date chosen for her canonization is the eve of the 19th anniversary of her death and the date previously established at the Vatican for the conclusion of the Year of Mercy pilgrimage of people like her who are engaged in works of mercy. When she served God and His people on earth, she was such an inspiration to all of us of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy — and now from heaven, she continues inspiring and setting an example for all of us in living out our own works of mercy to which God calls us. So what makes Mother Teresa a saint? Well, of the many facets to the life and brilliance of a saintly life, Mother Teresa exhibited a profound respect for and uncompromising proclamation of the dignity of all human life, from the unborn child to the most sick and helpless elderly person she encountered on the streets of Calcutta. Listen to her powerful words full of TRUTH and LOVE for every person and child of God: “America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. It has shown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships. It has aggravated the derogation of the father’s role in an increasingly fatherless society. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts ~ a child ~ as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience. It has nominally accorded mothers unfettered dominion over the independent lives of their physically dependent sons and daughters. And in granting this unconscionable power, it has exposed many women to unjust and selfish demands from their husbands or other sexual partners. Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being’s entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign.” (as quoted in the Wall Street Journal, 2/25/94). She went on to proclaim that “abortion kills twice. It kills the body of the baby and it kills the conscience of the mother. Abortion is profoundly anti-women. Three quarters of its victims are women: Half the babies and all the mothers.” She went on to say, “We must not be surprised when we hear of murders, of killings, of wars, of hatred. If a mother can kill her own child, what is left but for us to kill each other…. The greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion, which is war against the child. The mother doesn’t learn to love, but kills to solve her own problems. Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want.” In a letter to the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing, China, 1995, Mother Teresa wrote: “That special power of loving that belongs to a woman is seen most clearly when she becomes a mother. Motherhood is the gift of God to women. How grateful we must be to God for this wonderful gift that brings such joy to the whole world, women and men alike! Yet we can destroy this gift of motherhood, especially by the evil of abortion, but also by thinking that other things like jobs or positions are more important than loving, than giving oneself to others. No job, no plans, no possessions, no idea of ‘freedom’ can take the place of love. So anything that destroys God's gift of motherhood destroys His most precious gift to women-- the ability to love as a woman.” Mary brought forth Jesus from her lively faith and her offering of her body to be the way God would enter the world. It is no exaggeration to say that Mother Teresa’s active life of charity, of living the works of mercy, of helping “the poorest of the poor,” came from her love for Jesus — and here on earth, that love for Jesus is most concentrated in the celebration and adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament, the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Mother Teresa encouraged all of us in these beautiful words: “Like Mary, let us be full of zeal to go in haste to give Jesus to others. She was full of grace when, at the annunciation, she received Jesus. Like her, we too become full of grace every time we receive Holy Communion. It is the same Jesus whom she received and whom we receive at Mass. As soon as she received Him she went with haste to give Him to John. For us also, as soon as we receive Jesus in Holy Communion, let us go in haste to give Him to our sisters, to our poor, to the sick, to the dying, to the lepers, to the unwanted, and the unloved. By this we make Jesus present in the world today.” Mother Teresa’s simple service touched the hearts of millions of people of all faiths. In the darkness of her struggles, the soon-to-be-Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta was a shining light of love and generosity and care for the poor! May we love Jesus as deeply and with the same confidence and commitment, and share that love in works of mercy, as she did, with all God’s children, born and preborn. Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us!

St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) HOME VISITS A family/person in need calls St. Andrew's (815-886-4165, Ext. 304) for help. They outline their needs and our Helpline Coordinator returns their call within 24 hrs. After conducting a brief telephone interview to ascertain if we might be able to help, a two-member team arranges a home visit. During this visit the team gathers all necessary in-formation to determine if we can give assistance. Our board reviews the information and the visiting team relays the recommendation to the client. No cash or checks are ever given to persons we help. We make all payments. We keep all information gathered kept confidential.

Resurrection Choir
Our Funeral Choir can always use additional voices. This group ministers at funerals held here at St. Andrew. The funerals are normally at 10:00 AM. This is an ideal ministry for those who love to sing, but cannot make a commitment to a regular weekly choir rehearsal. Most of the hymns are from the blue Gather books and are songs that we know well. Members are notified a few days in advance by phone. You can participate as often or as little as your schedule permits. NECESITAMOS UNA PEQUEÑA EPIFANÍA La primera lectura de hoy, tomada del profeta Isaías, nos recuerda las lecturas de ese mismo profeta
que escuchamos cuando ya el tiempo de Navidad llegaba a su término con la celebración de la Epifanía del Señor. En ese momento del año cristiano, el mensaje de las lecturas es básicamente el mismo de hoy: la gracia redentora de Dios no conoce fronteras. Esta gracia es tan maravillosa, que nuestras regiones geográficas e ins-tituciones humanas no la pueden contener. Cuando Dios revela esa gracia, su maravillosa grandeza atrae a per-
sonas de todas partes y de donde menos uno se espera; de lugares que a veces parecen indeseables a los ojos de los que quisieran contener o controlar el poder salvador de Dios. Y entonces, en un flujo y reflujo de la gloria divina, la buena nueva de la cons-tancia, la misericordia, el amor y la fidelidad de Dios, que han atraído a una miríada de personas hacia Dios, llegará con su mensaje a todas las naciones y a todas las personas, tal como se canta en el Salmo de hoy.
PERO . . . ¿AHORA MISMO? El fin de los tiempos, tal como nos dice Jesús hoy, va a estar lleno de sorpresas. La sorpresa subyacen-
te es que no hay manera de saber la hora precisa en que el ungido de Dios volverá en su gloria. A los que se preguntaban ansiosamente el número de los que se han de salvar, Jesús les contesta, no con una cifra, sino con una descripción de los que serán salvos: todos los que se hayan disciplinado en el Señor para poder entrar al cielo por la puerta estrecha. Hay quienes presumen de “conocer a alguien” dentro del cielo, y por eso se pue-den permitir una vida de maldad. Pero Jesús les dice que sus influencias no les valdrán de nada. El amo que está a la puerta no les podrá conocer por el velo de pecados con que vienen cubiertos. Los que presumían de que su “buena sangre” y la alianza que Dios había hecho con sus antepasados les garantizaría la entrada para unirse a los patriarcas y profetas, sentirán que sus dientes rechinan y no se sentarán al banquete del reino. Según Jesús, todos los que levantaron murallas y perpetuaron posiciones o rangos, verán destruidas las fronte-ras celestiales que imaginaron, y verán también que los mejores y más altos lugares se ofrecen a otros. ¿Quieres tener un puesto en la mesa del banquete? ¡Empieza a vivir de manera que los otros invitados te quie-ran tener a su lado!

- Pope Francis Check out a Catechist testimony: After 8 years of being in hiatus from teaching religious education classes, I finally decided to come back now that my two children are older. I took on the role of teaching 7th and 8th graders in the fall of 2016 and I am amazed at how quickly the year has gone by. On my last day of class I was presented a letter from a student who would come to my class every Thursday. The letter touched my heart so much so that I have decided to continue to teach the following school year. Although this student has told me that I have made a difference in their life, this student too has made a difference in mine. Not only am I teaching these young minds about what it means to be a practicing Christian I too, am learning with them. Returning to religious education has always been something I have desired and as I continue to teach I continue to learn and grow with my students. I love that I have the ability to give back to my church community who is like a second family to me. There is no doubt in my mind that each one of us has a special gift or talent that can be shared. If learning more about God is something you desire you should consider becoming a catechist too. I promise you will not regret getting to know Jesus and our students who attend. He lives through all of us!

We are not alone. In this great mercy work, we are not alone. The Letter to the Hebrews (12:1-4) declares we can run the race, we can live the Christian life, we can keep our eyes fixed on Jesus because we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses. We are not alone. We who eat and drink Christ’s Blood and Body are
“conformed to his image on earth” in order to not only look like him but also be like him.
Who is lonely, cut off, alone, and needs my visit?
Who can I surround with my witness and comfort?

Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, ext. 301. Thank you. SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION CATECHUMENATE
The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.
BAPTISM OF CHILDREN We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.
SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT MARRIAGE
Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.
ORDERS Those seeking assistance in discerning a call to ordained ministry are encouraged to call the parish offices.
SACRAMENTS OF HEALING RECONCILIATION
Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, 3:00pm, Wednesday evening, 5:45-6:45pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.
ANOINTING Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain.

St. Andrew the Apostle We Care Food Pantry
The St. Andrew We Care Food Pantry is open every Wednesday from 10:00 am. until 12:30 p.m. for any eligible family in Romeoville in need of food assistance.
The requirements to receive food commodities from the Pantry is that a valid State of Illinois Driver's License or State of Illinois ID and a current utility bill with your Romeoville address must be presented at the time of sign-in. Due to the poor economy, loss of employment or housing, and if you are currently residing with a Romeoville family, you may bring your valid Illinois Driver’s License or State ID AND a current utility bill from the Romeoville residents you are living with. Some proof of residency must be established. This must be brought to the Pantry each time you come for food assistance.
