T here’s a very important

Tuesday coming this month,

and I’m not talking about Nov. 8.

Tuesday, Nov. 1 is the Solemnity of All Saints. The election this feast cele-brates will last eons longer than any vote cast on the following Tuesday. All Saints celebrates God’s election of all the holy men and women of every time and place who have preceded us. This feast is so important in our calendar that it’s a Holy Day of Obligation. You have been chosen by Christ to join the company of saints in heaven. Please choose to participate in that same heavenly liturgy here on earth with Masses at noon and 7pm. The cover of the bulletin lists Mass times at neighboring parishes. All Saints launches our annual

monthlong commemoration of the

Faithful Departed. Older Catholics

know these days before the bustle of the holidays are a good time to visit the cemetery to pray for our departed loved ones and make sure the grave and headstone are tidy for the winter. At church, an “All Souls” shrine area will be created near the St. Joseph statue. This area will feature the November banner, listing the names of the people who have been buried from St. Pius X in the past year. Feel free to bring in a framed photograph of your beloved departed for placement in this area. A Special Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated at 11am next Saturday. Everyone is welcome to attend this Mass, but we have mailed special invitations to the families whose names are on the banner. If you’ve lost a loved one in the past year, we urge you to join us at this Mass with a photograph of your loved one(s). You are also welcome to join us for lunch afterward. Please RSVP by contacting the parish office before tomorrow, Oct. 31 at [email protected].

SOME WILL RECALL 4 YEARS AGO

WHEN A MAN CAME TO MASS

SEEKING GOD’S CONSOLATION —

and then found an angry note on his windshield because of the election bumper sticker on his car. I remembered this recently while reading a column from America Maga-zine editor Father Matthew Malone. “I can virtually guarantee you that if you

attend Mass on Sunday morning in any

parish in the United States, you will find

yourself sitting in a pew near someone who

disagrees with you about what the public

policy should be on abortion. Or same-sex

marriage. Or the death penalty,” he wrote in

the Sept. 12 issue.

“While the teaching of the church on the

moral dimensions of these issues is clear

and consistent, there is today, as there has

always been, a spirited debate about how

to apply those moral principles in the public

realm, one that is democratic, diverse and

nonsectarian. As John Courtney Murray, S.J.

once wrote, in a pluralistic society ‘there are

circumstances in which human authority

has neither mandate nor duty nor right to

use its coercive power against error and

evil.’”

Father Malone goes on to explain that it is wrong to use an individual’s position on a public policy question— even a life-and-death issue like abortion or the death-penalty—as the only basis for determining whether they have a right to sit next to us in church. (Or for that matter, how we treat them anywhere our paths cross.) “Our fundamental identity and unity as

Catholic Christians does not reside in our

allegiance to a set of ideas, much less to

some political manifesto. Our unity resides

in the person of Jesus Christ. For us, as I

have often said, truth is ultimately a

person—a “someone” we encounter rather

than a “something” with which we beat

each other over the head.”

Lets hope that the climate of hospitality we seek to foster at St. Pius X will help spread Christ’s grace and compassion. I encourage you to read the rest of Father Malone’s column. WWW.AMERICAMAGAZINE.ORG/ISSUE/MANY-THINGS-139

Babette’s Feast

Movie & Discussion

In a remote 19th-century Danish village, two sisters lead a rigid life centered around their father, the local minister, and their church. Both had opportunities to leave the village: one could have married a young army officer and the other, a French opera singer. Their father objected in each case, and they spent their lives caring for him. Many years later - their father is now deceased - they take in French refugee, Babette Hersant, who agrees to work as their servant. After winning the lottery, Babette wants to repay the sisters for their kindness and offers to cook a French meal for them and their friends on the 100th anniversary of their father's birth. It proves to be an eye-opening experience for everyone.

Treasure COLLECTION FOR THE ARCHDIOCESE FOR THE MILITARY SERVICES will be taken up next weekend. The AMS

relies solely on private donors in support of its mission, “Serving those

who serve” and its ministry to provide the same pastoral care and

services to Catholics serving in the United States Armed Forces,

enrolled in U. S. Military Academies, undergoing treat-

ment at any of the 153 Department of Veterans

Affairs’ Medical Centers, working in civilian jobs for

the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and the

families of these populations. While the salaries and

retirement of Catholic military chaplains are paid for by the U.S.

Government, the AMS receives no funding from government or the

military for its programs and services. To learn more about the AMS go

PARISH APP ROLLOUT TEAM NEEDED: St. Pius X will be

rolling out a parish app through MyParish App in the coming months, and we’re looking for a few enthusiastic parishioners willing to be a part of the team. It would be two meetings leading up to the roll out and then help with the roll out weekend. All ages are welcome and no technical experience is needed, just enthusiasm, a smart phone, and a willingness to help promote. If interested, email me or call 532-9344 by Nov. 3.

EVERYDAY STEWARD CHARACTERISTIC

Accountable It surprised me that one of the aspects our

TMIY participants found most beneficial was

accountability. Having a group of fellow men

where they could share their hopes,

struggles, and faith gets almost 40 men out of bed to

voluntarily participate in our men’s group that meets Saturday

mornings. Accountability is essential to our lives, because it

can be so easy to stray from the higher calling of our faith and

God. In Sunday’s Gospel, we hear of Zaccheaus, after his

encounter with Jesus, going above and beyond to make

amends. As everyday stewards, we choose to be accountable

for the gifts God’s given us, seeking ways to give back. Where

is accountability strongest in your life? Weakest? How is your

faith calling you to more accountability? Andy Rebollar,

Pastoral Associate for Parish Life.

Visit spxcatholic.org to read about everyday steward, Diane

Remenak’s story about where her accountability to God has

led her.

SPECIAL MASS OF REMEMBRANCE 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5

November is a month of special commemoration of the faithful departed. A special memorial area will be placed in church, and the families of people who have had a fu-neral at St. Pius X since last October have been invited to a special Mass and lunch on Saturday, Nov. 5.

While everyone is welcome to attend this Mass, we espe-cially want to extend a special invitation to anyone who lost a loved one this past year. If that in-cludes you, please bring a framed photograph to Mass so that it can be placed in our memorial area. You are also welcome to join us for lunch. We just need you to RSVP by calling the office at 532-9344 by Monday, Oct. 31.

All are invited to bring in framed photographs of their departed loved ones for placement in this area, or to write the names of their beloved departed in the Book of Life.

Please include your contact information

so we can be sure the photo is returned.

ALL SAINTS PRAYER Father, All-Powerful and ever-living God,

today we rejoice in the holy men and women

of every time and place.

May their prayers bring us your forgiveness and love.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

ALL SOULS PRAYER (for all our departed brothers & sisters)

Merciful Father,

hear our prayer

and console us.

As we renew

HELP FOR THE HOLIDAYS: Are you struggling and wondering

how your family will get through the holidays? Will there be gifts under the tree for the children? We can help...call the Parish Office; information is kept confidential.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS will be hosting a “Fifth Sunday Rosary”

today (10/30) at 9:45am in the Chapel. Finger rosaries and booklets will be available, or you can bring your own along. As Catholics we are encouraged to pray unceasingly at all times—what better way than to join in solidarity to raise up our thanks and petitions to our God and King. All are welcome!

Poinsettia orders will be taken for the next three weekends. These beautiful plants are locally grown and proved to be hearty. By pur-chasing a plant, you are allowing the Knights to continue to give the widows and widowers of the past year one of the plants at no charge.
