20TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Mission Appeal by the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament
Living in Mercy
Hard but clear words today. Jesus tells his beloved “little flocks”—that includes us—to sell belongings and give alms. Do not be afraid. Sell. Give. Yet, we are sometimes afraid to let go, to give away. I really like this, we say. I might need it later, we say. Since we are numbered among his disciples, what Jesus said to Peter and to the rest of the followers, he says to us:
Do not fear!
Give alms!
Be ready to act for the benefit of others; be ready to do what is good!
So, this week, I will_____________!
Prepare for next week: Read and reflect on the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time (beginning on pg. 340) in the “Living Liturgy” missal.
REAL PEOPLE REAL PRESENCE

to grow our relationship with Jesus Christ and with one another

LOOKING AHEAD
A warm welcome to Ashley
Rottman, who begins Mon-
day as our new Coordinator
of Youth Ministry.
Sadly for us, Merry Hass
and her family intend to move to
Portland. I will miss Merry’s integrity,
prayerfulness and hard work in service
to our community through the years,
most recently as youth minister.
Indeed, our parish has been enhanced
by the talent and dedication of the
entire Brian & Merry Hass clan,
especially Courtney, Brandon and Lexi
who were integral to our youth
ministry. Blessings to you all during
this transition. Read Merry’s goodbye on page three.
Next weekend, worship-
pers at St. Pius X will hear
about the sacred work of
the Congregation of the
Blessed Sacrament.
Father Peter Dorairaj, SSS, will be
the main celebrant at the Lord’s Day
Masses and preach about his religious
order’s efforts to share the Eucharist
in 28 diverse countries, such as Sri
Lanka, Puerto Rico and Vietnam.
I hope you will give generously to the
work of these missionaries. An
envelope and flier are in this bulletin.
Father Peter’s visit is part of the
“Missionary Cooperative Plan”
through the diocesan Missions Office
and the Congregation for the Propaga-
tion of the Faith in Rome. Every two
years the parishes in our diocese host
an overseas missionary, so we who
are so rich can assist the poor.
I will be on summer vacation. No
daily Mass on Wednesday or Friday. Facility Improvement Plan Update:
Later this month, the Campus and
Facilities Planning Committee will
interview three construction
companies. This is so we can get a
construction manager (CM) on board
to partner with us in working with the
architects at Progressive AE. This is a
standard procedure for projects such as
this. Msgr. Bill Duncan at St. Sebastian
Parish in Byron Center said they
benefitted greatly from having a CM
assist with value engineering.
Based on feedback received from
parishioners last spring, plans are being
scaled back. The latest prototype
features a new Youth Area in the court-
yard between the Parish Center and
Religious Education Center. We
haven’t invested in sketches for you yet
because we need a construction
manager’s input to ensure we can
afford what the architects propose.

LOOKING BACK
OMG! And I mean it: Oh my God! Last
month, I was blessed with an extraordinarily
poignant experience at the parish where I
celebrated my first three sacraments:
St. Norbert’s in Munger (near Bay City).
As part of their “Camp Edge” pilgrimage,
our 7th and 8th graders and chaperones
prayed with me in the sanctuary of this cruci-
form building, which has changed little.
My godparents were there, along with my
mom. (My dad was home nursing his knee.)
Only God knew that when I was baptized
on June 2, 1963, 53 years later I would be on
that same land sharing my faith story with
adolescents from Grandville. We even re-
created the group photo from my First Holy
Communion! (The kids noticed I was the only boy in that picture who smiled.)
Unfortunately, St. Norbert’s is now an “occasional use” site, as part of the new
parish of St. Jude Thaddeus in Essexville. See page 5 for more photos of Camp Edge.

ELIZABETH POST
High School Youth Ministry MERRY HASS
A GOODBYE from MERRY HASS Life’s changes… For everything there is a season. I feel it is now
time to write my farewell letter to my home parish for the past 21 years. God has plans for our family that were just revealed to us in mid-June. See, God has always instructed me as to where he wanted me to go in life. At about age 24, I started listening more closely to his prompting. He has let me know when it is time to start something new and time to move on (not always revealing what is around the corner for me). I have always listened to his prompt-ing and acted without hesitation. That is until this past January. I felt him asking me to step down as Coordinator of Youth Ministry at St. Pius X. I argued with God this time! I admitted I was arguing and didn’t want to follow his call. I sought spiritual direction and just as I would get up the nerve to give my notice, I would see even just one of the high school teens that I love so much, and I couldn’t do it. I truly love the teens of this parish. I love planning events for them and watching them grow in their faith, serve their community and build relationships. After much prayer and time, I did trust God and I knew he had plans for me. Plans to prosper me and not harm me. Plans of hope and for a future. Well, I now see his plans unfolding quickly. Brian and I have sold our house and are moving to Portland, MI at the end of August. Lexi, Moriah and Naomi will all go to St. Patrick Catholic School there. We have an offer in on 3.5 acres with a barn and huge garage. Oh, and the land comes with a farm house. I am at peace with this transition in our lives. I am praying for Ashley Rottman, your new Youth Minister. I pray that she is completely loved, accepted and supported. I pray for these incredible teens that will forever and ever have a piece of my heart. Thanks for all you have given me. God Bless You. St. Pius X….PRAY FOR US. I would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to all the adults and young adults that make this Ministry what it is. I could not have done these past two years with you.
Note: Due to construction preparation at St. Sebastian,
today’s Volleyball Tournament (Aug. 7) has been cancelled.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT: In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus
concludes his teaching about those who are “faithful and prudent
stewards” with that classic stewardship teaching: “Much will be required
of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of
the person entrusted with more.” Christian stewards recognize that
God is the ultimate source of their gifts, talents, resources and
aptitudes, and that God wants them to use these varied gifts in his
service. This week might be a good time to reflect on our God-given
gifts. Are we using those gifts to service the Lord? If Christ came back
to us unexpectedly tomorrow would we be able to give a full accounting
of how we have exercised stewardship over these gifts? – August 2016

ST. PIUS X CHURCH: Thank you so very much for all you did to
help our group be able to enjoy the parade on the 4th of July. Bringing
a group of special needs individuals to a crowded public event can be
extremely challenging. Your assistance and hospitality has made the
4th of July parade a pleasure for the residents and staff of Harbor
House Ministries. The residents enjoy special events and because of
you, they were able to be front and center to fully enjoy it! The staff
raved about how amazing you were to us and are so thankful for your
kindness! You have blessed us greatly. Thank you for providing such a
welcoming ministry. Marcelle Walburg, Home Manager & the staff and
residents at Harbor House Ministries
BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES: It’s that time of year again. Take advantage of the sales! Supplies can be put in the food bin in the vestibule. We need items by Aug. 21 so they can be delivered before school starts. Thank you for helping those in need!

CONGREGATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Our Mission is Clear: Eucharist is Our Life...Blessed Sacrament Religious share a common mission: to allow the mystery of the Eucha-rist to take hold of their lives so completely that they will live this mystery fully and proclaim its meaning through many diverse aposto-lates and reach out to mission lands throughout the world. They are active in the ecumenical movement and focus on having the Eucharist be a sacrament of unity. Bringing communion to the sick and shut-ins, especially in the hospital ministry. They offer hospitality and minister to priests and religious. In all they do, Christ in the Eucharist is their inspiration and the center of their personal and community life. We
welcome the Blessed Sacrament Religious next weekend (Aug. 13 & 14). Your prayerful support of the Congrega-tion of the Blessed Sacrament will help continue to make Christ in the Eucharist better known and loved.
St. Pius X has 948 registered households. Last week, 280 contributed either by using an offertory envelope or electronically. Every gift is gratefully received as a sacrifice united with Christ’s own self-offering in the Eucharist to share God’s love.
