H APPY NEW YEAR!

I sure hope you’ve found

some respite in these hectic

holy days.

Isn't it ironic how this season

when Christians celebrate God

saving us from our sins is

when we most need to be

saved from ourselves!?

Over spending, overeating,

over drinking, over stress-

ing…. All that describes my

own Christmas thus far. Which

is why I began by saying I

hope you have found some

respite; some rest and blessed

relief from the unrealistic

demands our culture places on

you to perform, so that you can

savor Emmanuel — God with

us. God in you.

M aking Resolutions — It

would be wise for each

of us to recall a basic Catholic

teaching as we begin 2017:

Q. Why did God make you?

A. “God made me to Know

Him, to love Him, and to serve

Him in this world, and to be

happy with Him for ever in heaven.” (From the old Baltimore

Catechism which served as a text-

book of Catholic doctrine from 1885

to the late 1960s).

Knowing, loving and serving

God happens by being

engaged in a parish. Following

is an (incomplete) list of

opportunities that I urge you to

consider participating in. They

will benefit you as a disciple

of Jesus Christ, and benefit our

life as a parish community:

SPECIAL INFORMATION

MEETING Thursday, Jan. 19

Come learn about our plans to

enhance the ministries of our

parish with a attractive space

designed for youth activities,

an enlarged gathering area

outside the church and other

improvements. These projects

will be funded by a capital

campaign to be launched this

spring.

If you’d like to provide needed

“seed money” and still have it

reflected in your 2016 giving, make

an offering today at spxcatholic.org.

”That Man is You” -- Being

a man of integrity requires the

support and guidance of other

men on the journey. That’s

what this program is about.

The winter semester begins

Saturday, Jan. 21.

Faith: Prayed, Celebrated

and Lived is the title for a con-

ference at Holy Redeemer in

Jenison on Saturday, Jan. 21.

While this conference is aimed

at catechists who come from

throughout the diocese, all are

welcome. More information

elsewhere in this bulletin. Winter Party, Friday, Feb.

10: Sometimes, all you can do

is laugh! Save the date now for

a special evening of laughter

with the River City Improv.

Rescue Your Marriage: If

your marriage is in trouble,

sign up for the next “Marriage

Saving Weekend” offered by

Retrouvaille Grand Rapids, a

Catholic ministry. The next

weekend begins Feb. 24. For

more information, call

616-752-7004. Scholarships

available for those who need

one.

Speaking of resolutions,

this is from Bishop Robert

Barron from Word on Fire:

“Finally, the best way to carry

on your Advent progress is to

commit to one spiritual

practice during the Christmas

season: read through the

Gospel of John, one chapter

per day; once a week, spend

some time with the Blessed

Sacrament; decide to attend

one extra Mass each week;

pray one rosary each day,

maybe in your car. All of these

are simple, proven ways to

deepen your spiritual life.”

Blessings of rest and service in

2017,

Faith Formation Religious Education

MASS ATTENDANCE

Dec. 24 & 25: 5:30pm— 871 |10:30pm— 476 | 9:30am—371

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to Marv Steffes for donating his time, treasure, and woodworking

talent and expertise. The mission, and Marv chose

to accept it, was to create a parish giving tree—

bigger and better than last year’s. And we can all

agree, he accomplished the task beautifully! Thank

you Marv! Your contribution played a huge role in

providing Christmas gifts and necessities to many

individuals and families who were in need.

Please continue to pray for the following and all the sick in our Parish, their families

and friends, those hospitalized and home-bound, and those in care facilities. To be included on the Prayer Chain (separate from this bulletin list), call Jason George at (231) 736-7487.

Parish Life

PARISH APP ROLLOUT TEAM NEEDED: Interested in helping with the

rollout of our parish app at the end of January? Join us for an info meeting on Sunday, Jan. 8 in the McDuffee Room after the 10:30 Mass. You’ll get a sneak peek and find out how you’ll be needed. No tech experience is necessary, just a willingness to help promote it. Contact me via email or call 532-9344 if interested.

DON’T GET EUCHRE’D BY MISSING OUT: Join us on Saturday, Jan. 28

after the 5:30pm Mass for soup and Euchre in Danner Hall. We’ll have a movie for the kids and a Euchre tournament for the adults. There’ll be prizes, and even a few beginners’ tables. The Community Commission will supply the soups, and they invite anyone looking to bring something, to bring a snack food or dessert.

HAVE A FAVORITE CATHOLIC MYSTIC? People like Dorothy Day,

Thomas Merton, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Ignatius of Loyola, and many others spoke truths about our faith, so we’ll highlight a Catholic mystic every month through our Facebook page. We’ll include a few quotes, writ-ings, or prayers. If there’s someone you would like included, contact me via email or 532-9344 and share what you like about them and a quote or two.

SAVE THE DATE ~ Winter Party ~ Feb. 10 ~ 7-9pm (formerly Winter

Blast): It will be a night to laugh and enjoy each other’s company; more

details to follow.
