“Christians & Non-Christians have one thing in common. They both hate evangelism”

(Rebecca M Pippert) When was the last time you shared Jesus with a friend over a cup of coffee? Do you want to do it but feel that you don’t quite know how? Conversational Gospel is the sharing of the gospel in a conversation. It’s simple and effective. This workshop could change the way you see evangelism.

Date: 28 August 2021 Time: 9.30am – 12.30pm Venue: Bedok Methodist Church, Judah Hall (L2) Lead Facilitator: Alfred Tan was the former Vice Chairman of Bartley Christian Church. He was the Head of Business Development at DHL International and CEO of Singapore Children’s Society before he retired in 2020 to spend more time as an Evangelism Advocate for the Gospel.

SERMON NOTES

Date of Sermon: 15 August 2021 Sermon Title: Steps of Faith Bring An Abundance of Grace Scripture Text: Matthew 9:8-13 Speaker: Rev Dr Aaron Tay Introduction: Four groups came to Jesus to seek help because Jesus was known to be powerful (Matthew 9:26), and Jesus was known to be merciful to all who came to him. But why don’t non-Christians come to church to seek help for their issues? They’ve not heard the news of Jesus helping all who went to Him. 1. Our never-changing God still heals today like He did in biblical times • If Jesus is the Son of the Living God, Jesus should still be doing miracles like those seen in Matthew 9 today (through his Body, the Church). – There is no biblical evidence to show that miracles ended after the time of the apostles, even though some have taken this view. • We cannot subject God’s power and Word to our reasoning and experience. Instead, we need to elevate our faith in line with God’s Word. – Jehovah Rapha: the Lord who heals. – “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in His eyes, if you pay attention to His commands and keep all His decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought onto Egypt”. • It is God’s heart to heal because that’s who He is. – 1 Peter 2:24; Isaiah 53:5 – God desires to bring healing to His people. • Sickness and disease are a product of sin. Healing is therefore God’s grace to counteract sin and its effects. • God has given us five types of healing: – Healing by design (i.e. our bodies contain complex systems that allows it to repair itself) – Healing through discovery (i.e. modern medicine) – Inner healing (i.e. the healing of our soul and spirit) – Healing delivered solely by prayer and faith (i.e. miraculous healings) – Healing from death (i.e. eternal life)

2. Why aren’t sick people rushing to the Church to seek Jesus for healing? • The people of God in the church have not shown to a large extent that they could help like our Lord did: – Early apostles could do the same works as Jesus. – In John 14:12, Jesus told his disciples that those who believe in Him will do the same works as Him. • We must have the faith to believe that Jesus will answer our prayers: – Faith to believe in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, as our Creator, our Lord and Saviour, and the One who empowers us. – Faith to act on our belief that Jesus will answer our prayers: i) Many Christians are so self-sufficient that we live our lives without needing to exercise our faith. We’ve thus not trained our faith to trust God in all things. ii) When something major appears, our faith is too small to trust in Him. – We thus need to exercise faith in Jesus, trusting Him to answer our prayers, in all matters. • Exercising active faith in Christ is very important. God is sovereign, but not everything is fated. – God’s will is unchangeable. There are aspects of God’s will that are unchangeable (i.e. final judgment etc) – However, God’s will may not be completely fulfilled. He will allow his people, by their prayers, by their trust and acts of faith in Him to be a factor in deciding whether his will would be fulfilled: i) It was in response to their acts of faith that Jesus healed those in Matthew 9. – We must thus act in faith so that these promises will come to pass. We need to start with small steps of faith, and we will find that God will quickly meet us with His abundant faith. – The acts of faith need not be large. We simply need to go to him to ask for help. – Our steps of faith will be met with God’s abundant grace. – We need persistence in exercise faith: (Matthew 9:27-28) The two blind men followed Jesus calling out to him to have mercy on them. – We can exercise faith in Christ anywhere, including the home, the church, and the workplace. Application: Let us be challenged to act in faith in the following ways: • Pray for someone who is unwell for God to heal them. • Ask God to give you wisdom on how you can bless someone (i.e. family, DG mates, colleagues). • Ask the Lord to release favour to you.
