Fall is a great time to enjoy

the great outdoors. Beautifulfall foliage coupled with

    great weather compel many people

    to spend ample time outdoors

before the arrival of harsh winter

    weather drives them back

    indoors. The following are a

handful of activities that are tai-

    lor-made for fall.

    Raking leaves: While raking

leaves might not jump out at youas a great way to spend a nice fall

    afternoon, families often find rak-

ing leaves together soon turns into

a fun day in the yard. Build leaf

piles and let the kids jump in, and

    then do it again.

    When raking, encourage kids

to collect some colorful leaves and

set them aside. Once the raking is

done, you can then enjoy making

    some homemade crafts with the

leaves you and your youngsters justcollected.

    Apple picking: Perhaps no activ-

ity is more synonymous with fall

    than apple picking. Many apple

    orchards encourage customers to

come by and pick their own apples

in the fall. Once your family and

you have scoured the orchard for

the perfect apples, relax with a cup

of warm apple cider before return-

ing home to make some home-

made apple sauce and, of course, adelicious apple pie.

    Hayride: Hayrides are another

fall tradition, and many farms offer

    relaxing hayrides throughout fall.

Younger children who may tire if

asked to patrol an apple orchard

for apples might find a hayride is

What do these yearshave in common:

    1987, 1990, 1994,

    2000, 2001, 2002 and 2008?

Not sure? Let me ask the

    question a different way.

What did these years in the

    stock market do to your

    retirement portfolio? Were

    you still working when the

    markets crashed, corrected or

burned? Did you view this as

a momentary problem thattime would heal? Did you

view these years as buyingopportunities since the prices

were on sale by 10 percent

off or more? Did you take

    advantage of the opportunity

    and invest heavily, adding to

    your temporarily discounted

    retirement accounts? If not,

    dont you wish you did?

    For some investors,

    crashes, corrections and

    depressions are merely a

great time to buy and investmore for gains yet to come.

For others, these negativemarket events cause stress,

    tension, anxiety and high

    blood pressure. The deter-

    mining factors of either an

    opportunity or reason for

alarm boil down to just one

    word: liquidity!

    When we work, we gen-

    erate capital, creating liquid-

ity. When we are retired, liq-

    uidity is severely limited

    or non-existent becauseemployer based bi-weekly

paychecks no longer comein. In fact, crashes, correc-

    tions, recessions, depressions

    and inflation are devastating

to those on a fixed income

    or portfolio-based income

    stream. If you have surplus

    capital, you look forward to

dips in the markets that gen-erate buying opportunities. If

you have no surplus or are

living on the majority ofwhat your portfolio can safe-

    ly produce, very little good

    can come from falling mar-

    kets whether they are

    stocks, bonds, real estate,

    precious metals or commodi-

    ties because you cannot

afford to participate. To riskfurther decline or erosion

    could prove fatal!

    An analysis of the dates

    reveal the following: There

    are 26 years between 1987

    and 2013. The years chosen

    in my opening paragraph rep-

    resent the seven worst per-

forming years of the 26-yearspan. That means 27 percent

of the 26 years were overtly

    negative, and some people

    have never recovered!

    If you believe that the

    stock or bond markets will

    never experience a crash or

    correction again, please dis-

    right now and dont waste

    another minute of your time.

If you hold to the belief thatthe markets comprising the

    holdings in your retirement

    portfolio may go into nega-

    tive territory at any time,

    exacerbated by the monthly

    withdrawals that must con-

tinue to support you and your

spouse for the rest of your

life, please invest a few more

    moments of your time read-

ing to the end, for your own

    economic benefit.Is your retirement port-

    folio crash proof? In other

    words, will your income

    stream be uninterrupted if

the markets fell 40 percent in

a year? Would your level ofincome be free from decline?

Would you be able to access

your portfolio in the event of

an emergency to grab a large

sum of capital on demand? If

you or your spouse entered a

    nursing facility, would your

    income be satisfactory to

    handle the additional costs

    while still being able to

    maintain your household? Is

your portfolio designed topay you a stable income for

the rest of your life, even if

the IRS says your IRA must

be depleted as you age? What

about a legacy for your chil-

    dren? Will they receive any-

thing from your estate? Is it

    guaranteed?

    Though the federal

    estate tax bracket has been

    fixed at $5,250,000, NJ con-

tinues to hover at $675,000.This means if your estate,

    counting your home, exceeds

    that amount, taxes will have

to be paid! Are you prepared

to take care of this mandated

    reduction in your bequest to

    them?

Here are the nine points I

    am making:

    1. I insist on a guaranteed

rising income for the rest ofmy life, and my wifes, when

    we stop working.

    2. I demand long-term care

    portfolio protection to insure

the integrity of my assets and

    income.

    3. I require that my portfolio

    be designed with the least

    amount of governmental

    intrusion (taxes) as possible.

    4. I desire to leave the great-

est sum we possibly can to

    our favorite charities (our

four children) when my wifeand I are gone.

    5. I must have protection

    from stock and bond market

losses, so that my income and

    insurance programs put in

    place will not be compro-

    mised when the negative

    market years occur. (And

    occur they will).

    6. I mandate that during ris-

    ing markets my portfolio will

be able to capture the highvalues to reset my lifetime

    income stream, which will

    never retreat, upward.

    7. I need the flexibility and

    liquidity to make adjust-

    ments as necessary when sit-

    uations arise.

    8. As part of my retirement

    plan, I have documents in

    place that designate my

    executors, trustees, power of

attorney, health proxy andliving will advocate.

    9. My plan must include

    funds for entertainment

    value that are disposable and

    discretionary (e.g. Vegas,

    travel and gifting).

    This is how my personal

    retirement and estate plan is

    designed and how I practice

    the 7 Ps: Proper Prior

    Planning Prevents Poor

Performance Period! It isdesigned to Maximize my

    income today while protect-

    ing, preserving and perpetu-

    ating my wealth for tomor-

row. My 32 years of experi-

    ence in the retirement and

    estate-planning field have

    taught me that most people

    agree with these basic ten-

    ants for their own retirement

    and estate plan. Wouldnt

you agree? If so, and a self-

    analysis reveals that you are

not set-up properly toinclude each of the nine ben-

    efits listed above, perhaps a

    no-cost, non-obligatory con-

sultation with me would be a

    prudent move. There is no

    fee and no commitment nec-

    essary to get my professional

    opinion on your personal

    plan. Why not avail yourself

    Whitening is not

    permanent. People

    who expose their

teeth to a lot of foods and bev-

erages that cause staining maysee the whiteness start to fade

in as little as 1 month. Those

    who avoid foods and beverages

that stain may be able to wait

    one year or longer before

    another whitening treatment

    or touch-up is needed.

    Tips for maintaining your

    newly whitened teeth include:

    Avoiding the consumption of

    or exposure to products that

stain your teeth. If you dochoose to consume beverages

    that stain, consider using a

straw so that the liquid bypass-

    es your front teeth.

    Brush or rinse immediately

    after consuming stain-causing

    beverages or foods.

    Follow good oral hygiene

    practices. Brush your teeth at

least twice daily and floss at

    least once daily to remove

plaque. Use whitening tooth-paste (once or twice a week

    only) to remove surface stains

    and prevent yellowing. Use

    regular toothpaste the rest of

    the time.

    Consider touch-up treat-

    ments. Depending on the

whitening method used, youmay need a touch-up every 6

months or after a year or two.

If you smoke or drink lots of

    stain-causing beverages, you

may need a touch up more

    often.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does insurance cover the cost of

    whitening procedures?

    No. Dental insurance

does not typically pay for the

    cost of the tooth whitening

    procedure.

    Does teeth whiteners damagetooth enamel?

    Studies of whitening

    products using 10% carbamide

    peroxide showed little to no

effect on the hardness or min-

eral content of a tooths enam-

    el surface.

Do teeth whiteners damage exist-ing dental restorations?

    Over 10 years of clinical

    use of whitening products con-

    taining 10% carbamide perox-

ide have not shown any dam-

    age to existing fillings. The

issue is not damage to exist-

    ing restorations; rather, keep

    in mind that existing restora-

    tions such as tooth-colored

    fillings, crowns, bonding,

    veneers, and bridges do not

    lighten. This means that any

preexisting dental work mayneed to be replaced to match

    the new tooth shade achieved

in the natural teeth, should a

    bleaching process proceed.

    Do teeth whiteners damage a

    tooths nerve?

    Theres no evidence to

    date that the tooth whitening

process has a harmful effect on

the health of a tooths nerve.

    One study reported that at

    both a 4.5 and 7-year follow

up, no individual who used atooth whitening system need-

ed a root canal procedure on

    any teeth that had been

    whitened.

    While there are many

    ways to help an

    elderly loved one

do all they can to maintain

health, one of the best ways to

    improve both the physical and

mental health of a senior citi-

    zen is meditation. We know

    that meditation can reduce

stress and help us relax, but

    recent studies have shown that

    meditation can also relieve

    pain, reduce the probability of

    heart disease and

    improve creativity.

    Here are some other

    benefits of medita-

    tion:

    1. The deep breath-

    ing exercises central

    to any program of

    meditation encour-

    age oxygen enrich-

    ment to the blood.

    Senior citizens who

    suffer from digestion

    problems often see

    immediate relief because the

    oxygenation of their digestive

    functions is empowered

    through meditation. This extra

    oxygen boosts the immune sys-

    tem, heals the lungs and

    improves circulation.

    2. Meditation also causes

    increased alertness and the

    ability to interact with others

    and surroundings. The in-

    creased oxygen in the blood-

stream of the elderly user of

    meditation will cause brain

    functions to improve.

    3. Because both the mind and

    the body become more relaxed,

    the mental and physical health

    of the individual is improved

    drastically. Seniors who suffer

    from depression can benefit

    from meditation. During medi-

    tation, feelings of happiness are

    created in the mind, which

    increases daily happiness and

    satisfaction.

    4. Meditation improves physi-

    cal energy, making the senior

years just as rewarding as other

    life phases. Meditation is also

easy to learn and requires no

    certain religious affiliations.

    The fact that meditation is

flexible and easy to do makes it

    a great choice for everyone,

    quickly enriching the lives of

    seniors.

    5. A study, published in the

    Journal of Brain, Behavior &

    Immunity, shows that eight

    weeks of training in mindful-

    ness meditation is linked with

    decreased loneliness. Aside

    from alleviating loneliness,

    mindfulness meditation has

    also been shown in past

    research to have positive effects

    on the brain linked with

    brain changes that may even

    have effects against mental ill-

    ness.

    The break-even point

    in your business is

    where all direct and

    indirect costs have been met.

    You are neither making nor

    losing any money. The break-

even point can be measured in

    number of units sold, dollars

of total sales or possibly hours

    billed out.

    To calculate your

    breakeven point, you must

    first determine your direct

    (variable) and your indirect

    (fixed) costs. Direct costs vary

with the number of units sold.

For every unit you sell, you

must buy another set of the

    components. Your indirect

costs dont normally vary for a

    given volume of business.

    Your gross profit per unit

    (sales less direct costs, known

    as the contribution margin)

    goes toward paying for these

    indirect costs. Once the indi-

rect costs have been paid, you

    have reached the break-even

    point. The gross profit from

every unit sold over the break-

even point goes to the bottom

    line as profit.

    To simplify this example,

lets assume that you run a

    food stand that sells only

    hamburgers. For every burger

you sell, you need to buy meat,

a bun, trimmings, and a paper

    serving plate. Assume your

burger sells for $6 and the

total of the direct costs is $2

    per burger. This means that

    you have a contribution mar-

gin of $4 to go toward fixed

    costs.

    Your fixed costs include

    such things as rent, insurance,

    advertising, taxes and so on.

    Within limits, selling a few

    more burgers will not cause

    these expenses to increase. If

your total fixed costs are $100

a day, your breakeven point is

25 burgers or $150. Once you

pass 25 burgers, $4 from each

    additional sale goes to your

    bottom line as profit.

    For assistance in deter-

    mining your break-even point

and its effect on your prof-

    itability, give us a call.

    Ahealthy pet is a happy

    pet and responsible

    pet owners know that

    their beloved pets health rests

    largely on their shoulders.

Ensuring a pet is healthy over

the long haul can be quite sim-

    ple. While some pets may

    develop medical conditions

    that require more attention,

the following are a few simply

ways pet owners can keep their

    pets healthy.

    Dont skip visits to the

    veterinarian. Unlike humans,

    pets cant speak for themselves,

so its quite possible that a pet

    could be hurting or dealing

    with a medical condition while

its owner has no idea. Annual

    veterinary checkups can help

    avoid such situations, and the

    vet might notice a developing

    condition before it becomes

    anything serious. If a pets

    behavior suddenly changes,

    schedule a veterinarian visit as

soon as possible, as this behav-

    ioral change could be indica-

    tive of a medical issue.

    Prioritize vaccinations.

    Vaccinations can protect a pet

from a host of ailments, includ-

    ing rabies, distemper and Lyme

    disease. New pet owners who

adopted a pet from a rescue

    organization should get docu-

    mentation about the animals

    past vaccinations. (Certified

    kennels typically provide such

    documentation at the time of

adoption.) If there is no such

    documentation or if there are

    documents showing the pet

    received certain vaccinations

but not necessarily all of its

    vaccinations, take the pet to

    the veterinarian and have the

    animal receive those vaccina-

    tions that arent documented.

    Spay or neuter the pet.

    The ASPCA notes that spay-

ing or neutering a pet is a pre-

    ventive measure that can help

a pet in the long haul. Spaying,

    or removing the ovaries and

uterus of a female dog or cat,

    can prevent diseases, such as

    breast cancer and pyometra, as

well as infection and keep the

    animal from going into heat.

Neutering a male dog or cat

    before it reaches six months

    can reduce the likelihood that

    the animal will behave aggres-

    sively, while helping to prevent

    testicular cancer, diseases of

    the prostate and hernias.

    Help the pet fight heart-

    worm. Heartworm isnt easy to

    treat, but it is easily

    prevented. Cat ow-

    ners should speak to

    their veterinarian

    about heartworm

    and the best course

    of action, as cats are

    less likely to devel-

    op heartworm than

    dogs, who are natu-

    ral hosts for the

    infection. Dogs should be test-

    ed for heartworm annually in

the early spring, and the veteri-

    narian might prescribe a pre-

    ventive medication the dog

will take once per month. How

long the dog must take the

    medication depends on the

    dog and the veterinarian, but

    dog owners should heed the

    vets advice.

    Get your pet off the

    couch. Humans should not be

    couch potatoes and neither

    should their pets. Regular

    exercise burns calories while

    increasing muscle mass

    and improving cardiovascular

    strength. Dog owners should

    know that how much exercise

their dog needs depends on its

    breed, age, sex and physical

    condition, so discuss a proper

    exercise regimen with your

    veterinarian. Cats need exer-

    cise, too, and cat owners

    should also discuss the specifics

    with their vet.

    more their speed. Some farms

    may even allow customers to

walk the grounds and visit the

    animals on the premises.

    Hiking: Hiking is a fun

    activity that can be

    enjoyed nearly year-

    round, but its especially

    enjoyable in the fall.

    Thats because few things

    in nature are as captivat-

ing as a park or forest

when the fall foliage is in

    full bloom. Early fall also

    boasts ideal temperatures for

    hiking, as the mercury likely

wont rise enough or sink low

enough to produce the kind of

    extreme temperatures that

    can compromise a hikers

    afternoon. Instead, fall tem-

peratures tend to be mild and

    comfortable, allowing hikers

to fully enjoy their often beau-

    tiful surroundings.

    Corn maze: Visiting a corn

    maze is another activity that

    many people instantly associ-

    ate with fall. Some farmers

    transform their cornfields into

    corn mazes once the tempera-

tures dip, and such mazes can

be fun for adults and children

    alike. Though adolescents can

often be trusted to find their

    way through corn mazes,

    younger kids should be accom-

    panied by an adult.

    Pumpkin picking: Much like

apple picking is best in fall, so

    is pumpkin picking. Rather

    than buying your Halloween

    pumpkin from the grocery

    store, where your options may

be limited, go straight to the

    source and pick your future

    jack-o-lantern from a nearby

    pumpkin patch, which will

    provide a much wider selec-

    tion. Let your youngsters pick

    their own pumpkins and then

spend the rest of the day carv-

ing them at home. And dont

    forget to save those seeds,

which can be roasted over an

open flame to make a deli-

    cious snack.

    Do you have any strate-

    gic alliances with

    affiliated businesses?

    These are businesses that are

    complimentary to your busi-

    ness. Examples of complimen-

    tary businesses include plumb-

    ing, electrical, carpentry,

    HVAC, landscaping, win-

    dows, furniture, doors, paving

    and concrete. Each of these

    companies comes across two

    to five sales leads every

month. If not, they are not

    networking or asking the

    questions. You should have a

list of at least 25 other compa-

nies that you refer business to,

and that refer business back to

    you. And youd better be

    tracking both.

    By bringing other con-

    tractors to your customer, you

    are insulating yourself against

competition. If I were an elec-

    trician and brought a plumber

to my customer, the last words

out of my plumber to my cus-

    tomer better be, I know

    another electrician.

    What about competitive

    businesses? Have any alliances

    with them? Yes, your competi-

    tors. Some competitors are

really nice people! I have sev-

    eral electrical contractors that

    are friendly competitors. They

    have signed agreements not to

try to take each others cus-

    tomers. They share employees

when they can, which is bet-

ter than hiring and firing, and

    gives current employees more

    confidence that they have a

    job long-term.

    Do you have strategic

    alliances with your suppliers?

Have you received a sales lead

    from your suppliers? And not

    just the suppliers in your

    industry. Your insurance

    agents, bankers, lawyers,

    accountants, printers, clean-

    ers, maintenance and delivery

    service members, caterers,

    contractors have they

    brought you business? You

should have a chart in the

office and make it a competi-

tion. Send every supplier a let-

    ter once a quarter to

    announce the top suppliers

and who is on the bubble.

    Home may be where

    the heart is, but it

    also can be an unsafe

place if safety hazards are not

    recognized and addressed.

    The Consumer Product

    Safety Commission says that

    each year 33.1 million people

    are injured by consumer prod-

ucts and other dangers in the

home. Here is a collection of

    home hazards that can com-

    promise safety in and around

    the house.

    Flooding: Super storms have

    been wreaking havoc on many

    areas of the country. Flooding

is a common side effect of

    strong rains and high tides,

and the aftermath of a flood

can turn a home from a haven

    into a hazard. Microorganisms

    in flood waters may contami-

    nate drinking water, and wet

walls and floors can present a

    breeding ground for insects,

    pests and microorganisms like

    mold and mildew. The

    National Safety Council says

    microorganisms can penetrate

    into soaked, porous materials

and later be released into the

    air and inhaled. Flooding also

may lead to weakened or rot-

    ted floorboards.

    Magnets: Very small magnets

    are popular in jewelry, toys,

    building sets, and more. The

    number of products with

    strong magnets has increased,

    which may pose significant

safety threats to children. TheCPSC says that magnets have

    contributed to one death and

    86 injuries since 2005. Eight

    million magnetic toys have

    been recalled. Magnets that

    are swallowed may not pass

    easily through the digestive

    system. Oftentimes, they can

    get trapped in place when

attracted to one another or a

piece of metal and pinch or

    twist the intestines, poten-

    tially causing blockage or

    infection.Furniture tip-over: Large

    furniture and electronics that

    are not balanced well or

anchored to a wall can be

    pulled over by children and

    even adults. Small children

can be seriously injured by tip-

    over accidents. Tip-overs

    cause an estimated 22 deaths

    per year.

    Pools and spas: While drown-

ing in pools and spas is a lead-ing cause of death, there are

    other dangers lurking. Faulty

    underwater lighting, appli-

ances that fall into the water

and aging wiring can result in

    electrocution. The CPSC

notes that suction from a pool

or spa drain is also potentially

    hazardous. The majority of

    suction accidents involved

    children, but suction can hold

    an adult underwater. There

have even been cases of peo-

    ple being disemboweled from

pool drains. Installing a safetyvacuum release system that

turns off the pool pump when

a drain is blocked can prevent

    entrapment.

    Fire: Home fire injuries are

    highest among seniors and

children under the age of five.

In addition, home fires are a

    leading cause of emergency

    room visits. Smoke alarms on

every level of the house can

alert to danger, but ensuringcandles are extinguished and

electrical wiring is up to date

    and making sure space heaters

    and other appliances are not

    left unattended can help pre-

    vent fires.

    Garage doors: The CPSC says

    an average of 20,000 people

each year are treated in the

    hospital for injuries caused by

    garage doors. From fingers and

    toes getting trapped to heavy

    doors falling on children and

    adults, garage doors can cause

serious injury.Falls: Falls are a leading cause

of injury to people of all ages.

    Falls down stairs, from win-

dows and off of ladders are just

    some of the reasons people

    visit emergency rooms each

    and every day. Ensuring there

    are no tripping hazards around

    the house and also having

sturdy handles and guardrailspresent for use by the elderly

    can help prevent some falls.

    There are many dangers

    lurking around the house, and

    awareness of such hazards can

    help prevent serious injury.

    Clutter is a concern for

    many homeowners.Clutter can gradually

    accumulate, and over time a

home can turn from a welcom-ing respite to a claustrophobic

    place overwhelmed by items of

little or no value.Homeowners who have

battled clutter in the past often

find that it is most likely toaccumulate over the winter,

    when frigid temperatures out-

    side drive more people indoors.

    Spending more time indoors

    means more trash indoors.

    Newspapers and magazines

might be easy to discard when

the weather is warm, but a trip

    outside to discard such items

    takes less precedence when it

must be made in below freezing

    temperatures.The likelihood that even

    the cleanliest of homeowners

    might accumulate some clutter

    over the winter only highlights

    the importance of clearing a

house of clutter in the fall.

    While clearing clutter can

seem like an arduous task, thefollowing tips can make the

    project much easier.

Clean one room or area at a

    time. A disorganized approach

to getting organized is likely to

waste time and may even prove

    fruitless. Work your way

    through your home or apart-

ment one room at a time rather

    than jumping from room to

room. Have boxes or crates des-

ignated for items you find thatbelong in other rooms, and

    place items in the appropriate

boxes as you clean rather than

    returning items to the right

room as you find them. Once

    you have finished a room,

move on to the next one and

try to finish a room on the sameday you started.

    Invest in a paper shredder.

    Old bills, bank statements,

    receipts, and other once-impor-

tant papers have a way of accu-

    mulating on desks, in drawers

    and on counters. Such docu-

ments often do not need to be

held onto, but men and women

    are hesitant to discard them

    because they contain personal

information. A paper shredderis a great investment for home-

    owners and apartment dwellers

alike and can be the safest way

    to discard documents with

    potentially sensitive informa-

tion. Its also a friend to anyone

    attempting to clear clutter.

    Many shredders can shred mul-

tiple pages at a time, making

them a quick and safe way to

    discard documents that have

been littering a home long afterthey were useful.

    Decide to donate some items.

    Many unused items lying

around your house can likely be

    donated to a worthy cause,

    which can help motivate you

to clean out your closet of all

    those extra sweaters and other

    items you no longer wear.

    Encourage fellow members of

    the household to donate as

well, and set aside a few boxes

    clothes, as many goodwill

    organizations accept appliances

    Put seasonal items away.

    Storing seasonal items like

    patio furniture and swimsuits

    can help reduce the likelihood

that clutter will build up in the

    months ahead. Pack items from

your summer wardrobe togeth-er and store them in a suitcase

frees up room for your fall and

    winter clothing and helps you

    avoid overstuffed drawers. In

    addition to clothing, store sea-

    for YourDinnerParty

Over the last couple of years, dining out has become an even bigger luxury than itonce was. Thanks to the struggling economy, many people have decided to cutback on spending, and dining out has become casualty of such events.

While the economy is gradually rebounding, dining out is still largely reserved forspecial occasions among those whose memory of the recession is still fresh. However, dining out does remain a strong choice when hosting a special occasion such as a birthdayparty or anniversary celebration. When choosing a restaurant to have such a gathering, consider the following tips to ensure that rare restaurant night out goes off without a hitch.

    NEWwhats

    in dining?

Look for versatility in a menu. Whendining out, the emphasis is obviously on thefood. Couples might enjoy certainrestaurants they have previously patronized, but that does not necessarily make therestaurant ideal for a party. When shoppingfor a restaurant, look for one that boasts aversatile menu that can cater to a vast arrayof palates. Especially for larger parties, theversatility of the menu is very important.Restaurants that boast a large entreeselection that includes meat, poultry, seafood, and even vegetarian dishes ensures

    each guest has options.

Examine the elbow room. Because diningout has become such a luxury, comfortshould be another key consideration. Look

for a restaurant that provides ample elbowroom so everyone can relax and wont feelcrowded.

Be sure there are places to park. Chancesare, most guests will be driving to the party. While it seems like an afterthought, therestaurant should provide ample, and ideallyfree, parking. Avoid restaurants that chargefor valet service or inquire if such servicecan be included on the tab ahead of time.

Reserve well in advance. If its a trulyspecial occasion, be sure to begin the process

of finding a restaurant as early as possibleand make a reservation the moment adecision is made. Reservations can alwaysbe cancelled should things not work out.

    it gradually accumulates more

    and more random items. But

    hall closets can be valuable

    storage spaces when used

    appropriately. Designate a sig-

    nificant amount of time to

    tackle hallway closets in your

    home so you can thoroughly

    reduce the clutter within them

and get back to using the clos-

    ets as the valuable, organized

storage units theyre intendedto be. Discuss having different

purposes for each closet, such as

    one devoted to cleaning items,

another to coats, and so on.

Resolve to keep the floors in

each closet clear of items, as

clutter tends to be on the floor

and then work its way upward,

    eventually encompassing the

    entire closet. Once the hallway

    closets have been cleared, work

hard to keep them clean asautumn turns into winter.

    Of the 1,272 federal dis-

    aster declarationsissued in the last

    decade, more than half were

    classified as major disasters.

    These include calamities such

    as floods, hurricanes and tropi-

    cal storms, winter storms, and

others. In the last 10 years,

every state has had a least two

events designated as a majorfederal disaster.

    Most major disasters dis-

    placed hundreds or thousands

of people from home and work,

and nearly all involved a tem-

    porary or prolonged loss of

    major services and necessities,

    including power, communica-

tions, and running water, saidJonathan Bacon, director

    of marketing at Wilson

    Electronics, a maker of commu-

    nications equipment in St.

    George, Utah.

    We began thinking

    about what has changed in

    technology and society, and

how that would affect what wewould want to have in an emer-

    gency go-pack, Bacon said.

A lot of what we would take

    with us hasnt changed, but

some of what wed desire today

had not been invented 10 years

ago. We came up with 6 items

    that were either invented or

    radically improved in the last

10 years. We call it the 21st

    Century Survival Kit.

    1. Cell phone signal booster:Were all extremely depend-

    ent on smartphones for voice

    and data communications.

    Already widely used by first

    responders and news crews

    when initially entering disaster

zones, the Sleek 4G, a portable

    cell phone signal booster from

    Wilson Elec-tronics, helps to

    transmit and receive calls and

    data via cell towers unaffected

by a disaster. In a severe situa-tion like Hurricane Sandy
