Forrest Gump is without adoubt one of my favoritemovies. I must have seen it a hundred times and yet stillenjoy it. Forrest was a simpleman whose nave nature led

him to make wise observations. One of my favorite scenes iswhen Forrest and LieutenantDan are in the hospital. In a fitof anger Lt. Dan, whose legswere both amputated, pullsForrest down on the floor.Forrest had saved Lt. Dans lifewhen he was wounded, but Lt.Dan insisted he was supposedto die on the battlefield justlike the rest of the men in hisfamily had done in previouswars. Because Forrest savedhim he believed that he wasrobbed of his destiny. He ends

by telling Forrest, Look at me.I use to be Lt. Dan Taylor.Upon hearing this Forrest looksat Lt. Dan and makes a power-ful statement, stating the obvi-ous when he says, You still areLt. Dan.

We live in a periodwhere we, individually and asa nation, have lost touch withour identity, who we reallyare! We have gone from anation built on We to onefocused on self. Our enemieslaugh at us and encourage usto continue along these paths

for they know that it tender-izes us and prepares us to beconsumed. The majority of the ad campaigns focus on twothings: fear and greed. Thefear of not keeping up withthe Jones and the attitudeof greed that says I deservethis!

So whats the answer? How do we make sense of allthe noise coming our way? When your identity iswrapped up in what others tellyou who you are and what

W hile sunning onthe shore, I startedcounting all of themoney we were spending onour 2014 holiday vacationthinking about how are myfour kids going to replicate thisactivity with their kids in thefuture. Starting with airfare forsix and accommodations at amagnificent Riviera Beachoceanfront resort in SingerIsland, Florida for 10 days, renting 2 cars, as one wasntlarge enough for all of us withthe luggage, the cost of feedingour brood finalized the calcula-tion. The financial planner inme, immediately brought my

thoughts to cost and figureswhile my wife counted theblessings and memories beingmade.

How will our kids and their peers ever afford such alifestyle, one theyve come toknow, enjoy and anticipate?

Accumulating a down-payment for a home while pay-ing off student loans, coveringthe monthly rent, paying fordating then planning a wed-ding, the never-ending carlease payments, simultaneousto building a professionalwardrobe for the interviewsand first career job, our chil-dren will also need to furnishtheir new apartment or homewhile striving to participate in

their companys 401k programassuming they get that higherpaying job to afford to. Nextcome babies, where the word

budget has a whole new mean-ing. If our daughter or daugh-ter-in-law decides to be a stayat home mom with resultingloss of income, will they finan-cially make it without parentalhelp? The figures were con-stantly streaming through mymind and the conclusions arenot in their favor. Dad willneed to help, in almost everyexample I thought of and thisis under current conditionsbefore calculating the effects of any emergencies, health issuesor inflation?

In my 5 decades living in North Jersey, Ive seen a sliceof pizza rise from .25 to $2.50

and a house from $24,000 upto $350,000 then back downto $240,000. Our children willsee the same inflation increas-es over the next 5 decades oreven worse, in my opinion.Income taxes have risen pro-portionately over the sameperiod as well by eitherincreasing the tax rate or bylowering the brackets which, push more into higher pay-ments. North Jersey propertytaxes have fared much worse, rising substantially above theinflation rate of pizza andhousing.

What are the children of today to do when they pondertheir career and future? I dontknow about you, but Im grave-ly concerned. Ive written inthis column about multi-gen-

erational families living underone roof with one set of utilitybills, one mortgage paymentand one less family car. It was

the cycle of life, in the fiftiesand sixties; children were itch-ing to leave home and get outfrom under their parents tomake a life for themselves! Inthe 21st century, children arereturning home or arent leav-ing, for financial reasons. Youall should be aware that 52%of Americans dont payincome tax, which means the48% that do are supporting100% of the populations obli-gations. The Federal govern-ment is broken, NJ is broke, counties are broke and localmunicipalities are broke too.Government makes no money, doesnt produce anything to

make any money, yet, it doesspend a lot of money and evenmore money it doesnt have byborrowing from future revenuestreams, borrowing frominvestors, robbing the tax-pay-ers of tomorrow and increasingtaxes on the already overbur-dened 48% that pay today. Why cant government everoperate with a profit at the endof the quarter?

Should the Americanfamily emulate the federal gov-ernment and use the creditcard to pay for the vacation orshould government learn fromthe fiscally responsible tax-paying American families thatsay if we cant afford it, werenot going anywhere this year.Im not so nave, as to assumethat Americans dont use plas-

tic for a vacation, but, theres amajor difference between acharge card and a credit card.Virtually identical in appear-

ance, those who pay the bill infull upon its arrival used acharge card and those whopaid anything less, employed acredit card and will pay infi-nitely more than the actualcharges and expenses, dueto negatively compoundinginterest.

Yes, Im gravely con-cerned for not only my kidsbut, for all of todays children.Obviously, vacations and newcars can be abated duringtough economic times; but, mortgage payments, propertytaxes, homeowners insuranceand food cannot be! All of these financial and economic

thoughts ran through my mindwhen receiving a massage onthe beach hoping that one daymy kids will be able to afford tolive the way they live now. I doknow that they themselvesarent thinking about it, atleast not enough as theyshould be. My son Zacharyonce said to me, Dad, you hadto think that way when youwere 18 because you wereforced to. Your parents gotdivorced, sold the house andforced you to be on your own, renting your first house at just18! You had to buy your owntowels, dishes, pots and pans, you paid to buy and repair yourown car and bought your ownclothes. But Dad, I dont worryabout any of those things, because I have YOU!

Guess that makes me anenabler to a certain extentsince my 4 children do haveme as a back-up plan, always.

Alive or dead, healthy or oth-erwise, this Dad has preparedto always be the financialback-up plan for his wife andkids. It is hard for me to sepa-rate the titles of financial plan-ner and Dad, I thought tomyself. Please dont interpretmy column today to think mychildren are spoiled, far fromit! Privileged yes, spoiled no.The 2 older ones have theirown credit cards and resultingbills, pay for their own cars andinsurance and have their ownapartments, complete withrent and utilities. That is theirchoice, as to live home withmom and dad would cost them

nothing. As a result they stillvacation with their parentsand younger siblings; Terry andI hope that will continueindefinitely for more memory-making and eventually withtheir spouses and our grand-children. Every time we landat a different destinationaround the world, I still ponderabout the costs for my kids tobe raising a family and buildinga retirement portfolio forthemselves with the confi-dence that I have taught themwell and if they fall short orneed a helping hand I will betheir back-up plan, always. What a great feeling that Ihope my entire readership canand will enjoy, but, only if properly planned for. Anotheryear has passed folks, 2015 is

here. Please ask yourself thesefew questions: Are you pre-pared for your retirement? Isyour retirement plan prepared

for you to draw a monthlycheck to last for the rest of your life and spouses life? Willit continue to provide incomeand benefits for your childrenand grandchildren years afteryour departure? Would youlike it to? Would you like yourkids to steal a quote from myson Zachary, But Dad, I dontworry about any of thosethings, because I have YOU!Attend our workshops tolearn how by visitingwww.1APG.com. Happy New

Many men and women struggle to find time to exercise. Ifhectic schedules dominated by professional and personalcommitments have made it difficult to make exercise part of

your daily routine, you might want to consider skipping the snoozebutton so you can work out in the early morning hours.

Early morning workouts have their ups and downs. Glucoselevels in the body tend to be low in the morning, when many peo-ple wake up with a relatively empty stomach. Low blood glucoselevels can cause feelings of nausea and weakness and possiblymake you feel faint. In addition, since you likely arent moving

much while youre asleep, your joints and muscles are likelyless mobile early in the morningthan they are in the evening, which can make morning work-outs difficult and, if you dontallow yourself more time towarm up, put your body atgreater risk of injury. But morn-ing workouts also can energizeyou throughout the day, andmany people find it easier toconsistently exercise in theearly mornings than at night, when distractions or long days

at the office can affect your motivation to workout.Early morning exercise routines can be difficult to adjust to, but

there are some ways to make the adjustment to such regimens gomore smoothly.

Make sleep a priority. Prioritizing sleep makes it easier to get outof bed in the morning, when you will face the daily temptation to hitthe snooze button and roll over. But if you arent sleep deprived, youwill find it easier to skip the snooze phase of your morning routineand get right out of bed. Skip the late night talk shows and call it anight earlier, making sure you get between seven and eight hours of

    sleep each night. Once you

establish a new sleep schedule, you will find it easier and easierto get up and hit the gym in themorning.

Designate more time towarm up. Early morning workoutroutines require athletes towarm up more than they wouldwhen exercising at other timesof the day. As previously noted, your body is perhaps at its leastmobile right when you get out of

bed, so set aside more time towarm up when you workout inthe mornings. Five to 10 minutesof light cardiovascular exercisebefore you begin your workoutcan be enough to increase yourbody temperature and loosenyour body up so its ready forexercise.

Dont go it alone. Thebuddy system is effective formany people regardless of whenthey exercise, but it can beespecially beneficial for men andwomen who want to start work-P r o f e s s

The stuffy nose, aches and pains thatoften accompany the common coldcan leave sufferers feeling miserable

for a week or more. Cold season seems tokick into high gear when the temperaturesdrop, but this can be the year you dont comedown with a case of the sniffles. The follow-ing cold prevention tips can increase yourchances of making it to spring without losingany days or sleep to the common cold.Keep kids clean. School-aged kids tend tocarry home lots of germs, so when kids gethome after a long day at school, make surethey wash their hands thoroughly andchange into fresh outfits. Such precaution-ary measures can keep colds and other ill-nesses from running rampant through yourhouse.Go outdoors and get some fresh air. Its a myth that cold air willbring on a cold. In reality, being outside instead of congregatingindoors with other sick people may decrease your risk of getting acold. Dont be afraid to go outside when the temperatures drop forfear of getting sick. Fresh air and exercise can be good for you.Drink plenty of fluids. Keeping your body hydrated will help flushtoxins out of your body, strengthening your immune system and

making it more capable of fending off colds.Keep your distance. Did you know the coldvirus can be shot up to three feet away when

someone sneezes? The virus travels on thesmall droplets of saliva and mucus that getpropelled from the nose and mouth of a sickindividual. If you know someone is sick, stayas far away as possible and wash yourhands frequently, paying special attention toyour fingertips.Wipe down surfaces. The cold virus canlive on surfaces for up to 24 hours. Thatmeans a sick person can easily transfer avirus by touching a computer keyboard orremote control he or she shares with others.Use disinfecting wipes or warm, soapywater to clean off doorknobs, telephones, light switches, cabinet handles, and any-

thing that is frequently touched around a home or business.Let it out gently. Blowing your nose forcefully or pinching your noseto hold back sneezes can irritate nasal passageways and makethem more vulnerable to infection.Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. If you are well, keepyour hands away from your mouth, nose and eyes. Viruses are

ing out in the morning. If someone is waiting for you at the gym or if

your significant other is up and ready to go, youre far less likely toskip a morning workout than you would be if you are going it alone.

Eat at your own discretion. Some people simply cannot eatbefore a workout, while others find working out on an empty stom-ach makes them faint and weak. The problem many people whowork out in the early morning encounter with regard to eating beforetheir workouts is they simply dont have the time to eat and affordtheir body enough time to turn that meal or snack into fuel that willbenefit their workout. A study published in the Journal of AppliedPhysiology found that eating a meal 45 minutes before a moderate-intensity workout enhances exercise capability. But morning exer-cise enthusiasts typically find they do not have that spare 45 minutesto wait around while their bodies absorb a meal. Eating healthybefore exercise, and giving your body adequate time to absorb thatmeal, can definitely fuel your workout. But if that 45 minutes ulti-mately compromises your ability to workout, you may want to havea glass of orange juice or a drink that contains carbohydrates soyour body has some fuel as you exercise.

Many adults find that mornings are the onlytimes they can consistently exercise. Adjusting tosuch a routine can be difficult, but there are someways to make that adjustment easier.

Caring for a dog is nosmall task. Many dogsneed daily exercise and

interaction with their owners inorder to live long and healthylives. But as dogs age, theresponsibility of caring for themcan become even moredemanding.

When a dog begins toexhibit signs of aging, its easyfor dog owners to assume thatthe rigors of caring for the dogwill lessen. But while aging dogsmay not need or want to spendas much time playing fetch orwalking around the park as theyused to, they often grow moredependent on their owners asthey grow older. Recognizing a

dogs changing needs and howthose needs relate to caring forthe dog is a responsibility dogowners must take seriously.Consider altering the dogsdiet. Many aging dogs do notneed as much food to maintaina healthy weight as they didwhen they were puppies or inthe prime of their life. Much ofthat is because aging dogs dontexercise as much as they usedto, meaning they wont be burn-ing as many calories as theyonce did. So an aging dog thatsstill on the same diet it had as ayoungster might gain weight, which can lead to a host ofuncomfortable or even painfulailments. Owners concerned

about their dogs diets shouldconsult a veterinarian, who mayrecommend a geriatric diet thatwill provide all of the necessaryvitamins and nutrients dogsneed while reducing their risk ofobesity.Make sure water is accessibleand available throughout theday. Older dogs are at greaterrisk of dehydration, so ownersshould make sure water is read-ily available for the dog at alltimes. Aging dogs often strugglewith their mobility, so place sev-eral water bowls throughout thehouse so they do not have totravel far when they need a bev-erage. Keep a bowl in closeproximity to where the dog

sleeps as well.Prioritize grooming. Owners ofaging dogs must prioritizegrooming for a variety of rea-sons. Regular grooming is agreat way for owners to discov-er any abnormalities, such aslumps or tumors, on the dog thatmight be indicative of a medicalissue. Any such abnormalitiesshould immediately be broughtto the attention of a veterinarian.Routine grooming also helpsprevent drying out of the coatand skin, ensuring dogs arecomfortable.Dont overlook dental care.Dogs are known for bad breath,so while there may not be muchowners can do to make their

aging dogs breathe smell like arose garden that does not meanpet owners should overlookdental care. Dogs whose teethare clean and tartar-free areless likely to develop potentiallyserious medical problems, including heart disease, whichcan be a byproduct of toothdecay. Dogs may lose someteeth as they age, but ownersshould still emphasize dentalcare for their aging best friends.Lend a hand to dogs who arestruggling with their mobility.Aging dogs suffering from arthri-tis may struggle to get out ofbed or climb flights of stairs. When dogs start to struggle withtheir mobility, pick them up and

carry them up the stairs or helpthem out of bed in the morning.Veterinarians may prescribeanti-inflammatory medication toease soreness and pain, butowners can take additionalsteps to help dogs with mobilityissues, such as positioning bed-ding and food and water bowlsso that they are more accessi-ble to dogs.

Dog owners often find itheartbreaking when the agingprocess starts to take its toll onmans best friend. But there areseveral ways owners can makethe aging process more com-

Dietary and Lifestyle Changes Without Proper Hydration,Many Unhealthy Changes Occur in Our Cells

One solution can be as simple as dri nking more water. Butwhat kind of water should we be drinking?

TAP WATERTap water is a healthier option than soft drinks and other bever-ages, but according to the Environmental Working Group, therehave been 315 pollutants found in America's tap water since2004, and over half of these pollutants are completely unregu-lated and can legally exist in any amount.

At the current levels of contamination, the public is starting toquestion the quality of tap water and wonders if it is safe enoughto drink.

BOTTLED WATERBottled water is not necessarily healthier than tap water and yetit costs much more! Bottled water costs more per gallon thangasoline! Although, through marketing tactics, it is associatedwith healthy water, bottled water is not guaranteed to be anyhealthier than tap water. In fact, there are many carcinogenicchemicals that go into the making of plastic water bottles thatcan leach into the water. Why do you think they constantly tellus not to store bottled water in our cars? Because the plasticheats up, releasing chemicals into the water. Bottled water hasalready been heated many times in the 4 to 6 months it takesto reach market.

A four-year study by the Natural Resources Defense Councilshows that 1/3 of the bottled water tested contains levels of con-tamination which exceed allowable limits. Bottled water can alsobe slightly acidic, which may affect your body's pH balance. Fi-nally, the environmental impact caused by the production anddisposal of plastic bottles is harmful to our ecosystem.

REVERSE OSMOSIS AND DISTILLED WATERReverse Osmosis and Distilling are filtering processes, whichmay be effective in areas that do not receive municipallytreated water and are commonly used in bottled water facili-ties. Both reverse osmosis and distilling removes healthy, nat-urally occurring minerals in our water. These minerals not onlyprovide good taste, they also serve a vital function in thehealthy balance of our bodies. When stripped of these miner-als, this water becomes unnatural and an aggressive ab-sorber. This can be quite unhealthy. Also, 2 - 3 gallons of water are wasted for every gallon of purified water produced; again,a very negative impact on our environment and ecosystem.

THE SOLUTIONOne of the best ways to clean and remove toxins from your body is by drinking the right water so the body can heal itself. Everything in the body happens in water. Nutrients, Miner-als, Hormones and Insulin follow water into the cells.

Find out why tap water, bottled water, reverse osmosis anddistilled water are not the answer and could be actuallycausing more health problems. We have researched the best water to drink for detoxifyingyour body of these harmful pollutants, as well as removepesticides (toxins) from your fruits and vegetables.

ANTI-OXIDANT, ALKALINE, RESTRUCTUREDIONIZED WATERThis technology comes from Japan and has been used inJapanese homes for decades. It is now available in the USA.This water brilliantly addresses the Three Stresses that arecausing us to feel and look older, slowing us down, andcausing more aches and pains: Oxidative Stress, AcidicStress and Dehydration Stress.

Why are so many people getting acid reflux, diabetes, high blood pressure and highcholesterol? This destructive environment that w e are creating in our bodies of Oxidative Stress, Acidic Stress and Dehydration Stress leads to a downward spiral of inflammation, aches and pains, illness and disease. We then look older and feel older.

At the ACP Vein Centerin Wayne, NJ, weprovide patients withthe latest technologiesfor the treatment of Venous disease. One

of our latest offerings is EndoVenousRadio Frequency by EVRF.

Though Radio Frequency technology isnot new to the treatment of Venousdisease, prior to EVRF, its usage hasbeen primarily for the treatment of thegreat and small saphenous veins. EVRFtechnology allows for the expansion of treated areas.

With EVRF, blue/red spider veins up to1 mm, varicose veins from 1.15 to 5 mm(collateral, reticular and perforatingveins), as well as great and smallsaphenous veins (up to 20 mmdiameter) can be treated.

The treatment is based on the principleof thermocoagulation. Thermocoagula-

tion is the heating of the vein wallthrough radio frequency waves whichmakes the vein coagulate. Highfrequency impulses will be sent througha catheter to make the vein coagulate, shrink and disappear.

Prior to EVRF, primary treatments forsmaller diameter veins, such as varicoseand spider veins included ambulatoryphlebectomy and sclerotherapy. Ambu-latory phlebectomy is a minimally inva-sive procedure in which a largesurface of varicose vein is removedthrough a series of miniature incisions.Schlerotherapy involves injecting a smallvolume of liquid into the diseased vein. The sclerosing liquid acts upon the liningof the vein to cause it to seal shut.Temporary side effects of theseprocedures may include: bruising andswelling, inflammation, and hyperpig-mentation.

This innovative technique goes furtherthan existing techniques. Compared to

other techniques, thermocoagulation isapplicable on: all types of varicose veins;every type of skin; not seasonalcommitted; and does not have any sideeffects like hyperpigmentation, necrosisor skin burns. Patients experienceminimal discomfort, and normal dailyactivities can be resumed within one day.

How to cope with an athletic injury

As any professional athlete can attest, even the most ath-letic and physically fit individuals can suffer an injury.Professional athletes typically have highly trained med-

ical personnel at their disposal as they recover from injury, butmen and women who dont draw a paycheck for their athleticexploits have no such luxury, making it far more difficult to recov-

er from and cope with injury. Each individual body responds to injury in different ways. For

example, one person may heal from a hamstring injury in as lit-tle as a few weeks, while others must endure a healing processthat lasts several months. But no matter how different athletesbodies may be, there are coping mechanisms every athlete canemploy to help deal with the mental toll that injuries can take.Stay involved. Athletes who train heavily and devote much oftheir free time to pursuing their sport of choice may feel asthough their world has come crashing down when they suffer aninjury. But even if you cannot compete, you can still stayinvolved in your sport. If you are physically capable, offer to vol-

unteer at sanctioned events, which can help you maintain a con-nection with your sport and keep abreast of the happenings with-in that community. If your injury is so limiting that active volun-teering is nearly impossible, you can still attend events and thenblog about them afterward. The important thing is to recognizethat, while an injury may prevent you from competing, you canstill find other ways to stay involved.Set realistic recovery goals. Many athletes begin physicaltherapy or their rehabilitation processes with a gung-ho attitude, insisting they will return from injury stronger than they were

before. While thats a great attitude, its important that athletestemper their enthusiasm for recovery with a dose of reality.Recovery is not overnight, and even the most elite athletes, many of whom are accustomed to their bodies responding in theway they want them to respond, can be discouraged if they enterthe rehabilitation process with unrealistic expectations. Work

with your physical therapist, physician or trainer to establish real-istic recovery goals, using your enthusiasm to meet your short-and long-term recovery goals. Be flexible when setting yourrecovery goals, as you never know how your body will respondto treatment.Expect setbacks . Setbacks are an unfortunate reality of recov-ery for many athletes. Dont allow yourself to become discour-aged if a goal cant be met because your body is simply notready or needs to pause in its recovery process. A setback canbe frustrating, but you can cope with setbacks by writing aboutthem, be it on a blog or in a personal journal. Many athletes havefound that writing down their feelings is an effective way to deal

with the frustration of the recovery process. Keeping a journal orrecovery blog can also help you cope with any future setbacksdown the road, as you can look back and see what did or did nothelp you deal with past obstacles.

Athletic injuries can be thorns in the sides of committed ath-letes, who may or may not know what to do with themselveswhen sidelined with significant injuries. Butthere are various ways for athletes to cope withinjuries and make the recovery process lessfrustrating.

Working together with a trainer or physical therapist toset realistic recovery goals is one way for athletes tosuccessfully cope with injury.

Do-it-yourself, or DIY,projects around thehouse can give home-

owners a more personal stakein their properties. Gettingtheir own hands dirty whenrenovating a bathroom ratherthan paying a professional todo all that work gives manyhomeowners a strong sense of accomplishment while allow-ing them to learn a few things

and save some money alongthe way.

But whether homeown-ers have years of experiencewith regard to renovations orare about to embark on theirfirst DIY adventure, safetyshould be a top priority.Securing the right safetyequipment might not guaran-

tee a DIY project comes outlooking exactly as homeown-ers hope, but it can help pro-tect DIYers and their helpersfrom suffering injuries as theyrenovate their homes. Thefollowing is a list of some safe-ty equipment all homeownersshould have at the readybefore beginning homeimprovement projects.

    First-aid kit: All homes

should have a first-aid kit onhand, regardless of whetherany renovations are in theoffing. First-aid kits can helptreat minor cuts and scrapes, but such kits also can be usedto prevent more seriousinjuries from escalating in thetime it takes to see a physi-cian. When tackling a large

DIY project, secure a well-stocked first-aid kit thatincludes more than just band-aids and adhesives. In addi-tion to such items, a reliablefirst-aid kit should includeantiseptic ointment, a chemi-cal cold pack, cotton balls, eye drops, first-aid tape, nee-dles, sterile gauze bandages,

and tweezers. In addition, make sure the kit includes afirst-aid handbook that con-tains instructions regardingthe treatment of commoninjuries.

Eyewear: Protective eye-wear is essential when work-ing on renovation projects.Safety goggles may suffice on

smaller projects, but makesure the goggles fit well, asloose goggles will still allowdebris into your eyes, and thatdebris can compromise yourvision and result in injuries toyour eyes. If you will be weld-ing, be sure to wear properwelding goggles with ade-quate lens shading.

    Mask/respirator: Homerenovation projects, especial-

ly those that involve takingdown walls, can leave DIYerslungs susceptible to lung irri-tation and disease. But masksand respirators can protectthe lungs. Cloth masks maybe sufficient for smaller proj-ects, while more significantundertakings may require theuse of dual-cartridge respira-

tors that provide added pro-tection for sensitive lungs.Gloves: Hands also can

take a beating during homeimprovement projects, so itsimportant that DIYers findsturdy gloves to wearthroughout their renovationefforts. While this may con-tradict the idea of gettingyour hands dirty, splintered, blistered hands are painful

and susceptible to infection.Wear sturdy rubber gloveswhen using chemical cleanersor any products containingacid.

Joint suppor ts: Achyjoints can make it difficult toeffectively tackle DIY proj-ects, so its important that you

According toRemodeling maga-zines 2014 Cost vs.

Value Report, a majorkitchen remodeling projectshould enable homeowners torecoup 74.2 percent of theirinitial investments. Kitchenrenovations have long been asafe way to improve the func-tionality and value of a home. But not every kitchen project

is a guaranteed winner.Homeowners may inadver-tently make changes that endup sticking out like a sorethumb rather than improvingthe space. Take a look at thesekitchen remodeling dos anddonts to guide your nextundertaking.

    DO consider the way

your kitchen will look withthe rest of the home. Keeparchitectural integrity in mindwhen designing the space. Afarmhouse sink and countrycabinets can look out of placein an ultra-modern home.

DONT overlook theimportance of a seasoneddesigner or architect. Thesepros will know the tricks tomaximizing space and achiev-

ing the ideal layout of appli-ances and may be able to rec-ommend local contractors andvendors.

DO look beyond surfacedetails to the structuralintegrity of the design. Thekitchen should be functional,long-lasting and beautiful.DONT design just for today,

but look to the future as well.Unless you are willing tospend $50,000 every fiveyears, look for styles and mate-rials that will last for the longhaul. Older homeowners maywant to make adjustmentsnow that address potentialmobility issues down the road.

DO work with what youhave. A complete demolitionand renovation is not always

necessary to achieve thedesired results. Only invest inmajor changes if something isnot working (such as havingto walk across the entirekitchen to access the stove) oris unsafe. Otherwise, minorupgrades may do the trick.

DONT over-improvethe space. A fully equipped

commercial kitchen may behandy for a professional chef, but the average person maynot need an industrial hoodand indoor pizza oven. Whenyou make excessive improve-ments, you may not be able torecoup as much of the moneyspent because your home willnot be on par with the valuesof homes in the neighbor-hood.

DO make sure you canafford the project. Plan forsome unexpected purchasesand plan out the renovationaccording to your budget.Skimping on materials ordesign because of lack of money may leave you feelingdissatisfied afterward.

especially good at entering the body through the mucus membraneslocated in these areas of the body. A combination of frequent hand-washing and avoiding touching your face can keep colds at bay.Maintain your exercise routine. Regular exercise can boost thebodys immune system and help it to fend off foreign invaders, including the cold virus. A recent study found that taking vitamin C inaddition to daily exercise can reduce your risk of cold and cut the

duration of the cold should you get one. Before taking any supple-ments, speak with your doctor to make sure they wont interact neg-atively with other medications.Recognize that antibiotics are not the answer. Antibiotics areonly effective at treating bacterial infections, not viruses, whichmeans they are ineffective at fighting the cold virus. If you do get sick, play it smart. Should you succumb to a cold inspite of your best efforts, steer clear of others so you are not spread-

ing the virus. Rest and fuel yourbody with healthy foods andbeverages. Theres no need tovisit a doctor for a cold unlessyou have a fever after several

days of being sick. Colds nor-mally last between seven and 10days. If your symptoms do notimprove or if they seem to beworsening, visit your doctor.

Illnesses seem to peak duringthe winter months. A tapped-out immune system as well as

dry, cold air may encourage thespread of common viruses andbacterial infections more easily. As a result, its important thatmen, women and children take

every step possible to ward offsickness when the temperaturesdrop. Dietary changes can makea world of difference, and moreand more people are includingthese proven superfoods in theirwinter diets.Avocado: Avocado has highlevels of essential fatty acidsand vitamin B6, which is impor-tant in the biosynthesis of impor-tant neurotransmitters. Foodshigh in B vitamins may be ableto counteract some of the symp-toms of winter-related depres-sion.Pomegranate: This quirky fruithas vitamins C and K, folate andpotassium and is a good sourceof fiber. Pomegranate has anti-inflammatory properties, whichcan help in reducing joint painand preventing strokes.

Pomegranate may also help thebody fight viruses.Cinnamon: Cinnamon has highlevels of antioxidants, and somestudies point to cinnamon as anatural antibacterial agent.Cinnamon also can help regu-late blood-glucose levels, whichis beneficial for those withdiabetes.Prunes: Now widely referred toas dried plums, prunes are an

important source of boron, which could prevent osteoporo-sis. High in antioxidants, pruneshelp the body fight a variety of ill-

nesses.Cabbage: Cabbage may be akey element in the fight againstcancer. Cabbage has phyto-chemicals that can protect thebody against cancer-causingfree radicals. Its also a goodsource of dietary fiber, which

can stimulate a sluggishdigestive system.Butternut squash: This food ispacked with carotenoids, whichare stellar antioxidants. Thestarches in this squash alsohave been found to have anti-inflammatory properties.Chestnuts: Chestnuts are wor-thy of inclusion in anyones diet.

Unlike many nuts, chestnuts arerelatively low in fat but have highlevels of protein. Theyre alsopacked with vitamin C and Bvitamins.

Though laughter is often referred to as thebest medicine, no definitive study has beenconducted to determine the effects of laughteron overall human health, leaving open the pos-sibility that maintaining a good sense of humorand a positive attitude are just as important, ifnot more important, than finding time tolaugh each day. Buteven if laughter is notmedicinal, its benefits can

mimic those of exercise. When a person laughs, hisor her pulse and bloodpressure increase, andpeople tend to breathefaster when they laugh.Faster breathing sendsmore oxygen to the tis-sues, which can help theheart and lungs work moreefficiently. In addition, aVanderbilt University studyfound that between 10 and15 minutes of laughter canburn as many as 50 calo-ries. Finding time to laughmay also indirectly improvethe bodys immune systemresponse, as studies havesuggested that infection-fighting antibodies mightbe more abundant in peo-ple who can use humor to

    combat stress.

your destiny is to be it createsa slippery slope. Lt. Dan had alegacy of battlefield deathsthat he believed he had tolive up to. The reality is thatthe words of another man, avery simple man, were neces-sary for one legacy to be re-written.

    The name Fredric Wilson

II might not be a name thatyou quickly recognize, but Ibelieve it will be one you hearin years to come. Mr. Wilson isa young African-Americanman. Recently he posted avideo on YouTube speakingspecifically to, as he put it, myblack people. He addresses notonly the issues, and responses, going on in Ferguson but alsovariety of topics that affect the

African-American community. The synopsis of his 5 plusminute well-articulated mes-sage is that there will always be

disagreements and challengesbetween different groups of people. He goes on to say thateach person needs to takeresponsibility for his or her ownlife and not be defined by thepast, current struggles or byassociation with the wrongpeople. Mr. Wilson said whatneeded to be said, even if it wasunpopular in certain circles. Inother words know who you are!

Thank you Frederic! Now its our turn! Its timeto do some soul searching as towho we are individually and asa nation. And when we do weneed to stand up for what webelieve and fight for that belief whether in our schools, churches the workplace or athome.

But again, be careful thatyou are not fighting for what

someone else believes. Thetruth is that if you ask mostpeople what they believe theycan tell you but if you ask the

question why? most cantanswer. Hundreds of thousandsof citizens have given theirlives so that we can be a freepeople. That beautiful thingcalled freedom is in great jeop-ardy today because the reflec-tion in the mirror has becomeso distorted.

Once Lt. Dan strippedaway the non-sense that he wassold and began to live his life

with purpose everythingchanged. We as a country needto learn from this simple storyof identity.

You play a role. So whatare you going to do?Remember, you are still Lt.Dan.
