Getting to Know Plagiarism

AbstractPlagiarism is a worldwide issue that isharming the academic fraternity. Due tomore plagiarism cases being exposed(some being high-profile), it is hard todeny that plagiarism is now getting frombad to worse. This article hopes to intro-duce what plagiarism is, the types andwhy it happens, and how perhaps, thissickness could be eradicated.

Introduction Although the extent is relatively unknownlocally, plagiarism, being a global issue, isgetting more critical attention at top uni-versities around the world. For example,in 2006, the Guardian reported that pla-giarism is rife at Oxford, where the yearbefore, 10 cases of ‘intentional or reck-less’ plagiarism were detected, most werefound guilty [1]. Two years before that, in2004, three Harvard professors, namelyDershowitz, Ogletree and Tribe werecaught ‘misusing source’ for theirresearch work [2,3]. In 2008, the BBCreported that in a survey organized by theUniversity of Cambridge student’s paperfound out that 49% of the respondentsadmitted to a wide range of plagiarism, and only 20 students were caught [4].Further reading indicates that in each ofthe cases, early detection of plagiarismcame from individuals familiar with thesubject matter, and later confirmed usingelectronic detectors. Sadly, plagiarism isnot an academic-only ailment. In the year2000, Michael Bolton (yes, the singer)was slapped with a seven-figure finewhen one of his songs was proven to beplagiarized from another song [5]. In alatest furore, Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic Logowas controversially withdrawn due to alle-gations of plagiarism [6]. This indicatesthat plagiarism now is very much in thesociety; exists not only in the academicdomain, but in daily life as well. This doesnot bode well; plagiarism taints the learn-ing cycle, contaminates the evolution ofeducation, pollutes the intensification ofintelligence, defiles wisdom and infectsthe sanctity of knowledge.

Defining PlagiarismIn order to understand the problem, thesubject matter needs to be defined.Plagiarism has been extensively defined. For example, the Oxford Dictionarydefines plagiarism as “the practice of tak-ing someone else’s work or ideas andpassing them off as one’s own” [7].Merriam-Webster meanwhile not onlyagrees to the first definition but alsoadded “use (another’s production) with-out crediting the source”. It believed thatthe Latin word ‘plagiarius’ (meaning kid-napper), is the root to the current Englishword ‘plagiarize’ [8,9]. Thus, please bearin mind that plagiarism is not limited to aproduct to be made public (e.g., journalpublications, paintings to be displayed ina gallery, lecture notes on the world wideweb, a design of a device to be used by aproduction line in a factory, etc.). It con-stitutes everything that one may gainfrom. So literally, plagiarism can bedefined other’s work for one’s own profit.By doing so, one may stereotype plagia-rism to be largely related to somethingwritten. The fact that textual plagiarismcan be spotted much easier eases thespotlight on its equally serious counter-part, i.e., in drawings, music, painting etc.[5,6,10]. Many authors (on plagiarism)expressed that the boundaries of plagia-rism in research are unclear. Due to this,an increasingly substantial amount ofwork nowadays ‘contain elements of rep-etition’, where ‘the actual source is notproperly acknowledged’.

Plagiarism can be grouped into four majorcategories, as per Figure 1. The same fig-ure also displays the most probable andmore common causes in committing pla-giarism [11-14].

a. Accidental; this covers the minute

chance of what was being written or sub-mitted, have been reported elsewhere, ina similar way, unknowingly. ‘Accidental’here also covers the ‘ignorance of the law’circumstances, which include not under-standing what governs plagiarism andpoor understanding of citations and refer-encing systems [10]. Often, the repliesmay be ‘Somehow, we (the perpetratorand the original author) are in the samewavelength…’ or ‘It is just amazing howstrongly we agree on things…’ and mayeven be ‘I don’t know, by sheer piece ofluck, or a moment of genius, we just saythings similarly…’

This may be improved by training andunderstanding. If the act is purely acci-dental, then, it may not be repeated oncethe perpetrator is aware of what to do(and of course, what not to do!) [13].Perhaps, technical paraphrasing may alsobe a key here. Technical paraphrasing isdeemed as one of the basic skills in tech-nical writing, and should be known /understood by postgraduates in general. Please however, do bear in mind, thatrearranging words in different ways doesnot constitute the act of technical para-phrasing. Ideas still need to be acknowl-edged (it does not mean that if you pres-ent something in a different form, youcan do without citing the original!), buttechnical paraphrasing allows one todigest, expand, relate, rebut and con-clude. By doing so, some originality willsurface in terms of critical argument andstructured/logical opinions, making this worthwhile as an addition to the knowl-edge body. b. Non-intentional; this takes care ofhonest mistakes, e.g., failure to cite, missing citations, rearrangement ofadapted facts, and so on. It also covers

Buletin Enjinier, Jan 2016 7

Buletin Enjinier, Jan 2016 8

the point where the perpetrator’s thinkingand style are very much influenced byhis/her major references. Some samplereactions include ‘… I forgot, this pointdid come from somewhere…’ or ‘…thesentence/paragraph is so good that I cando nothing to make it mine…’.

In this case, technical paraphrasing maynot be the best alternative. The first sec-tion of (b) which highlighted failure tocite, missing citations and rearrangementof facts, may well be improved by onewith experience (on that subject matter),or in fact, in academic research, forexample, the supervisor [10,13].

c. Self plagiarism; using your own workin a different form/way without citing theoriginal piece of work. Some replies maybe in the form of ‘…well, I thought of this,so I can use it wherever and whenever.’ oreven, ‘… err… should I self cite? Come on,I am not going to stoop that low!’.Regardless. Please note: When you writesomething original, it does not remainoriginal. So, please cite.

In this case also as per (b), technical par-aphrasing may not be the best alterna-tive. Again, doing without self plagiarismwill need guidance and constant practice.Self-citing is not taboo, or even frownedupon, unless done out of proportion.Done proportionately, it brings muchmore good than harm!

d. Deliberate; the blatant act of copyingwithout permission, knowingly (that thisis against the law), and passing it as yourown. No further explanation needed here.

This is the most worrying of the lot. It hasbeen discussed by many writers in thefield of plagiarism that individuals com-mitting plagiarism this way are the mostdifficult to detect, and most difficult tocorrect/fix [10,14]. Some individualscommitting plagiarism in this category areobsessed in getting whatever they want,by hook or crook. Education and trainingon plagiarism may work, but it remains tobe seen whether there will be personalcharacter improvement (in this case, forplagiarism), without the element of fear.

Going against Plagiarism:Prevention is better than cure, plusthe element of fearWe are handling things which are hap-pening. Why don’t we stop them fromhappening? All other top universities arelooking at good individual practice, love inwork and pride of doing research. Itneeds to be reminded that software (suchas Turn It In, Viper, Plagiarism Checkeretc.) for detection is only one step [15].There is no guarantee that these softwaremay stop or eliminate plagiarism alto-gether (most unlikely, really). It is inter-esting to note that local universities

(either private or public) happen to takeplagiarism seriously; for example,Universiti Sains Malaysia has a transpar-ent Plagiarism Policy which is in placesince April 2013 [16], Universiti PutraMalaysia has a clear section on plagiarismon their book on thesis preparation [17]while Universiti Malaya published a bookentitled ‘How to Avoid Plagiarism AHandbook for Postgraduate Students[18].

Plagiarism happens when there is need,or pressure. It also happens when ‘igno-rance happens to be bliss’. For example, the dissertation is due next week. Onecan be thinking, ‘Why don’t I just copysome parts and change it a bit, that isgoing to save me some time!’ and ‘Once Icite them, it should be fine!’. Plagiarismcan also be rampant when it is condoned(i.e., no policy, legislation or tools to con-trol). ‘The examiners are not going toread my submitted article word by word!’Or even ‘The university has a software tocheck, but no one never uses it.’Sometimes, it may be ‘It is not a mustanyway to use such detection tools.’ Or ‘Ido not think they have a rule for this.’Knowing about poor enforcement alsoprompts plagiarism to be rampant. ‘Theydid nothing when a friend was caught.’ Itis even worse when even supervisorscannot guide or advise their students onpoor writing ethics and plagiarism.

It is interesting to note that this ‘supplyand demand’ chain (supply will be fromthe vast information available, anddemand can be time, i.e., deadlines, oreven the need to get good grades) needsto be broken. For intentional offenders, they should not only be reprimanded, butslapped with stiff penalties. Here comesthe element of fear. Good governance onplagiarism (e.g., with strict codes of con-duct and severe disciplinary actions, etc.)will definitely deter plagiarism. It comesto a point where an individual wanting tocommit plagiarism would think, ‘...it is notworth it, I am not going to take thechance to be rusticated or expelled, justbecause I copied someone else’s work...’or ‘...I’m definitely going to get caught ifI do it!’.

Conclusion: Isn’t this everyone’sresponsibility? This article introduced plagiarism byexplaining what it means. This article alsoexemplifies the types of plagiarism andwhat we think that allows plagiarism totranspire. It is also presented in brief, how plagiarism can be countered. Webelieve that prevention is better thancure. It is also noted that no single action, including the usage of a state of the artelectronic plagiarism detection tool, canwipe-out plagiarism. In fact, in the waragainst plagiarism, an integrated mecha-nism, which covers governance, usage of

various detection tools (including supervi-sion), education and awareness (on pla-giarism and good practise) at differentlevels need to be formulated. This is seenby many to be the first concrete step inmaking a difference on plagiarism. At thecellular level, as for us individuals, it isimperative to understand plagiarism, pro-mote it to our peers as a disease, and say‘No!’ to it. It is after all, everyone’sresponsibility.
